This local gem is redefining what it means to enjoy fresh, vibrant greens and herbs all year long. Les Verts started with a simple idea from founders Rachel Green and her father Kerry: to bring the highest-quality produce to their community. Winnipeg locals Rachel and Kerry, both passionate about agriculture, transformed their vision into a thriving staple that offers premium, living lettuce, herbs, and more. Today, Les Verts empowers Winnipeggers not just with produce but also with resources to make enjoying nutrient-rich food at home easier than ever. “After years of perfecting our equipment and techniques, we realized just how easy it was for anyone to use our system and grow beautiful produce. We want to share our knowledge so more people can access fresh, local food all year.” – Rachel Green Now, let’s look at what makes their growing systems truly stand out. Les Verts’ success lies in their unique indoor vertical gardening system. Picture rows of vibrant greens stacked vertically, thriving even as snow piles up outside. This setup maximizes space and creates ideal growing conditions for our Canadian climate — perfect for urban areas or limited outdoor spaces. Les Verts has fine-tuned their process to provide just the right amount of light, water, and care to each plant. Predictability, production, and quality are key advantages of their hydroponic system. Les Verts is one of the first in Canada to use special LED light spectrums, ensuring top-quality greens. And it’s not just about advanced technology — Les Verts prioritizes sustainability by using up to 90% less water and 75% less fertilizer than traditional farming, all without pesticides. This controlled environment results in cleaner produce, fresh from their garden to your table. I absolutely love using their basil for my bruschetta, and Les Verts’ dill is my go-to for warm potato salad or any salmon dish . Their lettuce is so flavorful that it’s hard to go back to using any other kind in my salads . It’s amazing how having these aromatic herbs and greens on hand can transform a meal and make cooking that much more enjoyable. But Les Verts doesn’t just stop at providing flavorful produce through their subscription program—they also offer ways for you to bring the experience home. If you’re thinking about growing your own greens, Les Verts offers indoor garden systems that cater to different needs, from personal use to schools and community spaces. These systems are designed to be user-friendly and low-maintenance. With automated lights and nutrient pumps, you could go on vacation for 2 weeks and come back to thriving plants. One of their popular options is the Les Verts Terrace indoor garden, a Canadian-made hydroponic system that makes it easy for anyone to grow their produce with just 10 minutes of care per week. It has space to grow enough for 16 heads of lettuce, 40 bunches of herbs, 8 large tomato plants, or even 4 flats of microgreens. If you’re looking for more growing power, their larger 3-tier system can handle up to 48 heads of lettuce, 120 bunches of herbs, 24 tomato plants, 36 pepper plants, or 12 flats of microgreens, giving you flexibility to grow everything your heart desires. Instead of buying greens that might spoil before you can use them, you can pick only what you need, reducing food waste and ensuring every bite is as fresh as possible. For summer gardeners, being able to harvest favourites like basil, dill, or juicy tomatoes year-round is a game changer. Les Verts makes it simple to keep vibrant flavours at your fingertips long after the outdoor growing season has ended. One of my favourite things about Les Verts is knowing exactly where your food comes from. With news of produce recalls and quality concerns, choosing local offers peace of mind. Most leafy greens in North America come from California, travelling long distances that impact their quality. By choosing Les Verts’ produce, you get fresher, cleaner greens while supporting a sustainable, local food system. Les Verts is also dedicated to helping schools and community groups — including those in indigenous and remote areas — secure grant funding for their systems across Canada. Their resources and community initiatives empower people with the tools and knowledge to grow their own food, fostering self-reliance and healthier lifestyles. Les Verts is more than just a provider of delicious greens; it’s a symbol of innovation and community spirit, bringing a taste of sustainability to Winnipeg’s kitchens year-round. You can find their products and indoor garden systems at T&T Seeds (7724 Roblin Blvd) or explore their full range online at lesverts.com . To book an appointment to visit their showroom in Oak Bluff email hello@lesverts.com. Supporting Les Verts means more than just delicious produce — it’s about bringing a little extra freshness and care to your table. Why not try it and see the difference for yourself? You might just discover that homegrown quality makes all the difference. This is our go-to appetizer year-round, and with Les Verts’ delicious basil, I can enjoy it with the freshest ingredients in any season. It makes our favourite dish even more special! 8 Roma tomatoes, diced 12 fresh Les Verts basil leaves, thinly sliced 8 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 baguette loaf, sliced into 1/2-inch thick slices Plain goat cheese Balsamic glaze Prepare the Garlic Oil: Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes, or until it just starts to turn golden (be careful not to brown it). Pour the garlic oil mixture into a large mixing bowl and let it cool. Prepare the Tomatoes: Core and dice the Roma tomatoes. Drain any excess juice by placing the diced tomatoes in a colander and then patting them dry with paper towels. Add the prepared tomatoes to the bowl with the cooled garlic oil. Chiffonade the Basil: Stack the basil leaves on a cutting board, roll them into a tube, and thinly slice them into ribbons. Transfer the basil to the bowl. Mix and Marinate: Add balsamic vinegar and salt to the tomato mixture. Gently stir to combine all the ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the flavours meld. Assemble and Serve: Lightly brush each baguette slice with extra-virgin olive oil and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Toast in the oven at 400°F for 5 minutes, then broil for 1–2 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning. Once toasted, spread goat cheese on each slice, top with the bruschetta mixture, drizzle with balsamic glaze, and serve. WASHINGTON (AP) — A machinists strike. Another safety problem involving its troubled top-selling airliner. A plunging stock price. 2024 was already a dispiriting year for Boeing, the American aviation giant. But when one of the company's jets crash-landed in South Korea on Sunday, killing all but two of the 181 people on board, it brought to a close an especially unfortunate year for Boeing. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and aviation experts were quick to distinguish Sunday's incident from the company’s earlier safety problems. Alan Price, a former chief pilot at Delta Air Lines who is now a consultant, said it would be inappropriate to link the incident Sunday to two fatal crashes involving Boeing’s troubled 737 Max jetliner in 2018 and 2019. In January this year, a door plug blew off a 737 Max while it was in flight, raising more questions about the plane. The Boeing 737-800 that crash-landed in Korea, Price noted, is “a very proven airplane. "It’s different from the Max ...It’s a very safe airplane.’’ For decades, Boeing has maintained a role as one of the giants of American manufacturing. But the the past year's repeated troubles have been damaging. The company's stock price is down more than 30% in 2024. The company's reputation for safety was especially tarnished by the 737 Max crashes, which occurred off the coast of Indonesia and in Ethiopia less than five months apart in 2018 and 2019 and left a combined 346 people dead. In the five years since then, Boeing has lost more than $23 billion. And it has fallen behind its European rival, Airbus, in selling and delivering new planes. Last fall, 33,000 Boeing machinists went on strike, crippling the production of the 737 Max, the company's bestseller, the 777 airliner and 767 cargo plane. The walkout lasted seven weeks, until members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers agreed to an offer that included 38% pay raises over four years. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight. Federal regulators responded by imposing limits on Boeing aircraft production that they said would remain in place until they felt confident about manufacturing safety at the company. In July, Boeing agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud for deceiving the Federal Aviation Administration regulators who approved the 737 Max. Acting on Boeing’s incomplete disclosures, the FAA approved minimal, computer-based training instead of more intensive training in flight simulators. Simulator training would have increased the cost for airlines to operate the Max and might have pushed some to buy planes from Airbus instead. (Prosecutors said they lacked evidence to argue that Boeing’s deception had played a role in the crashes.) But the plea deal was rejected this month by a federal judge in Texas, Reed O’Connor , who decided that diversity, inclusion and equity or DEI policies in the government and at Boeing could result in race being a factor in choosing an official to oversee Boeing’s compliance with the agreement. Boeing has sought to change its culture. Under intense pressure over safety issues, David Calhoun departed as CEO in August. Since January, 70,000 Boeing employees have participated in meetings to discuss ways to improve safety. All Progressives Congress (APC) Northwest Youth Leader, Abdulhamid Umar Muhammad, has commended Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, for donating 1,000 motorcycles to the Kano State Police. ATLANTA (AP) — Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died. He was 100 years old . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday afternoon, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. The center said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. As reaction poured in from around the world, President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s death, saying the world lost an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” and he lost a dear friend. Biden cited Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, his work to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless and advocacy for the disadvantaged as an example for others. “To all of the young people in this nation and for anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility,” Biden said in a statement. “He showed that we are a great nation because we are a good people – decent and honorable, courageous and compassionate, humble and strong.” Biden said he is ordering a state funeral for Carter in Washington. A moderate Democrat, Carter ran for president in 1976 as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded The Carter Center in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiate cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to eradicate guinea worm infections as one of many health initiatives. Swinging hammers into their 90s, the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians revisit his presidency and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief" and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America's dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. Emphasizing human rights , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise" speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter's diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. married fellow Plains native Rosalynn Smith in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and they soon turned their ambitions to politics . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. After rural white and Black voters elected him governor in 1970, he drew national attention by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Carter published more than 30 books and remained influential as his center turned its democracy advocacy onto U.S. politics, monitoring an audit of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. After a 2015 cancer diagnosis, Carter said he felt “perfectly at ease with whatever comes.” “I’ve had a wonderful life,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.” Sanz is a former Associated Press reporter.4 easy, comforting bean dishes for fallISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has questioned whether PTI’s protest is a political move or a well-thought-out conspiracy and game against the dignity and honor of the country. Dar criticised PTI’s recurring protest calls, questioning their timing to coincide with visits by important international dignitaries to Pakistan. In a statement on Sunday, Dar highlighted the timing of PTI protests, such as during the visit of the Chinese Prime Minister on October 14, the SCO Summit on October 15-16, and the arrival of the Belarusian President the following Monday. He appealed to PTI to “spare Pakistan from your petty politics.” Additionally, Federal Minister for Planning and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, addressed a news conference in Lahore, stating that the public has consistently rejected PTI’s calls for protests and sit-ins, and predicted failure for the party’s latest demonstrations. Iqbal emphasized the government’s responsibility to protect lives and property, noting that precautionary measures are in place. He underscored Pakistan’s ongoing economic progress under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is set to announce a five-year economic development plan soon. Iqbal accused PTI protesters of attempting to disrupt this progress for their personal agendas, warning that the government will not tolerate disruptions to normal life or the creation of law and order issues. He affirmed that no one is permitted to take the law into their own hands, and those causing unrest will face strict consequences. Additionally, Iqbal noted that the PTI founder, who has been legally sentenced, can only seek release through the courts and must clear his name through judicial processes. Labour MP for Cardiff West, Alex Barros-Curtis, said warnings should have been “amber or red”, as Mr Reed told MPs that more flooding is “likely”. Hundreds of homes were left under water, roads were turned into rivers and winds of more than 80mph were recorded across parts of the UK. More than 130 flood warnings and 160 alerts remained in place across the UK on Monday. In the Commons on Monday, Mr Barros-Curtis asked: “Can I ask that the Secretary of State speak to his Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) colleagues to carefully look into the role of the Met Office here? “It is clear that their response was slow and that there was a clear underestimation of the impact of Storm Bert. “They put it yellow rather than amber or red. Our constituents have been let down by this incompetence before, and it cannot keep happening.” Mr Reed said: “In most parts of the countries that were affected, warnings were given with adequate time for people to prepare and I would encourage people to sign up on the Defra website, or the Environment Agency website for warnings and alerts if they live in an area that could be affected by flooding. “I’m aware of the particular concern that he mentions regarding the Met Office, and I will indeed be speaking to colleagues in DSIT as they review the circumstances of that and look at how the situation can be improved for future events of this kind.” During his update to the House, the Environment Secretary said that more flooding this week is “likely” but its impact “should be less severe” than has been seen. He said: “Around 28,000 properties are being protected by Environment Agency flood defences. “Unfortunately, an estimated 107 properties have flooded across England, principally from river and surface water flooding.” He added: “The Environment Agency and local responders have also been busy protecting properties elsewhere in England, including flooding from the River Teme in Tenbury Wells where around 40 properties have flooded. “The river has now peaked and local responders will be focusing on the lower reaches of rivers over the next few days.” He further stated: “Further flooding is sadly likely over the next few days as water levels rise in slower flowing rivers such as the Severn and the Ouse. “The Environment Agency anticipates that any impacts should be less severe than we have seen in recent days.” Mr Reed also described the flood defences they inherited from the previous government as being “in the worst condition on record following years of underinvestment”. He added: “Over 3,000 of our key flood defences are below an acceptable standard. “That is why we are investing £2.4 billion over the next two years to build and maintain flood defences.” Elsewhere in the session, Labour MP for Coventry South, Zarah Sultana, was among the MPs to call for a legal duty on fire services to respond to flooding. She said: “I want to express my solidarity and thanks to all of our emergency services, including firefighters on the front line. “Extreme weather events are on the rise and becoming ever more frequent due to climate change, highlighting the urgent need for proper funding and resources. “England is the only part of the UK without a statutory duty for flooding, leaving fire services underfunded and under-resourced to respond effectively. This must change, as the FBU (Fire Brigades Union) has long called for.” “When will the Government finally provide a statutory duty for Fire and Rescue authorities to respond to flooding incidents in England?” Mr Reed replied: “The fire and rescue authorities have the powers to intervene, but she’s quite right to point out there’s not a duty, and officials in my department, working with the Home Office, will review that to see that that remains appropriate.” Conservative MP for Mid Buckinghamshire Greg Smith said some communities in his constituency are flooding “for the first time in decades” as he accused the Government of wanting to “concrete over the countryside”. He said: “That is a result of some of the big infrastructure we are seeing being built, particularly HS2 where they will concrete over a field completely, it seems, unaware that that will have a knock-on effect to farmland next door. “So will the Secretary of State commit to working with the Transport Secretary (Louise Haigh) and I also suggest the Deputy Prime Minister (Angela Rayner) given their plans to concrete over the countryside to ensure that where construction takes place proper, and I really mean proper, flood mitigation measures are put into place.” Mr Reed replied: “This needs to operate across Government, and we will have those conversations and ensure that measures are put in place to support communities as much as is possible from the more severe weather events that we’re seeing as a result of climate change.”
