Perhaps his role in the opener was a touch generous, given it was Victor Palsson’s errant pass after Marcondes and Crnac combined that set up Sainz. But he already looks like a staple in Thorup’s starting line up. 4. Good to talk, Ante Thorup’s style of football is pleasing on the eye. But the way he carries himself and his words are just as a compelling a watch. The City chief speaks with a refreshing honesty and a common sense that clearly will chime with large swatches of his fan base. His pre-match dissection of Crnac’s struggles in those previous auditions for the injured Josh Sargent down the middle cut to the heart of the matter. Yes, the 20-year-old is a young man in a new country trying to adapt to a very different footballing culture in the English Championship. But he also carries a weight of expectancy fuelled by the scale of the price tag that, in fairness, was not of his making. Yet Thorup met that external debate head on, and admitted Crnac needs to deliver more than the one goal he had previously mustered so far at Stoke. The Dane spoke about his positioning, the need to work on his first time finishing and to develop an aerial threat in keeping with his impressive physique. All wrapped around the unflinching conviction Crnac will become a key striker for this football club. With the game long since decided all that was missing to complete the rout was a goal for the young Croatian. Especially after he had struck a post and headed at Daniel Grimshaw in that opening first half barrage. It duly arrived in the 82nd minute, when he skipped past the stumbling Pleguezuelo before calmly rifling the ball past the Argyle keeper at his near post. The broad smile and the acclaim of his team mates said it all. And Donald Trump is noticing. On Monday evening, the incoming U.S. president dropped a stink bomb on Canadian politicians and businesses when he vowed to slap a punishing 25-per-cent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico. His reason? “Thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote on . He said the tariffs would remain until drugs — in particular, fentanyl — and “all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Members of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet responded Tuesday by stating they share concerns about border security. At least one of them, however, noted that Mexico is a much larger source of Trump’s concerns than Canada. “It’s the equivalent, on a yearly basis, of a significant weekend at the Mexico border,” said Immigration Minister Marc Miller. How bad is the problem with drugs and illegal immigrants crossing over from Canada into the U.S., especially compared to the flow of each from Mexico? According to from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the enforcement agency responsible for American borders, hundreds of thousands of pounds in illegal drug imports have been seized in recent years. Drugs seized in the northern border region are a small slice of that, one that has dropped since the 2022 fiscal year, which the U.S. border agency counts from October to September. For 2022, the agency seized roughly 60,000 pounds of drugs in its northern border region, representing about nine per cent of the yearly total of 656,000 pounds of drugs. The following fiscal year, about 55,000 pounds of drugs were seized in the northern border region, or about 10 per cent of the annual total in the entire U.S. Then in the 2024 fiscal year, which ended in September, U.S. border agents seized about 11,600 pounds of drugs. That’s about two per cent of the year’s total. But Trump mentioned fentanyl specifically in his justification for the big tariff on everything. The potent opioid is so powerful that just a few grains can be fatal, according to , which blames the drug for “causing high rates of overdose and overdose deaths.” Most of the drugs seized in the northern border region in recent years, by weight, have been marijuana, cocaine, khat and other drugs like amphetamines, hashish and opium, the agency’s statistics show. At the same time, in this region was a fraction of the amount of the drug that the border agency has obtained each year, both in weight and by number of doses. In the 2023 fiscal year, the agency seized 1.2 billion doses of fentanyl; 239,000 of them, or 0.02 per cent, were found in the northern border region. The following fiscal year, which ended in September, the number of fentanyl doses seized at the northern border jumped to 839,000, a number that represented about 0.07 per cent of the annual total. Fentanyl seized in the southwest border region, meanwhile, was more than 91 per cent of the border agency’s haul of the drug in 2023, and more than 82 per cent in the 2024 fiscal year. On Parliament Hill, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters Tuesday that Canada is prepared to beef up resources at the border, but generally defended Canada’s efforts to ensure illegal goods don’t cross it. “We absolutely share the Americans’ concerns around security at the border,” he said, noting in particular that law enforcement agencies in both countries share intelligence on how to stop the flow of fentanyl. Bottom line: Fentanyl seizures in the U.S. northern border region spiked over the past year, but still represent a fraction of the total that the American border security agency has intercepted over the past two years. The same border agency that tracks drug seizures also on “encounters” with people who are apprehended, turned away and expelled after entering the U.S. — a number that jumped from about 109,000 at the northern land border in 2022 to almost 200,000 in the 2024 fiscal year. But to know the exact number of illegal immigrants entering the country from Canada is not easy, since the published statistics don’t reflect that exact category. The more precise statistics on the U.S. Border Patrol’s apprehensions at the northern border can give an idea. And this number, though it remains a small fraction of those at the border with Mexico, has also increased significantly in recent years. In , U.S. border agents apprehended 916 people in the northern border region under their “Title 8” authority, which means detaining someone who is not allowed in the U.S., compared to more than 1.65 million apprehensions at the southern border. Two years later, in the 2023 fiscal year, the number of Title 8 apprehensions at the northern border had jumped to 9,514, compared to more than 1.49 million at the U.S. border with Mexico, U.S. border agency . The number increased further during the 2024 fiscal year, to 23,721 U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions at the northern land border, while the southern border saw more than 1.53 million U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions. LeBlanc said Canada is prepared to add technology like drones to improve surveillance and add personnel to address illegal border crossing. MANCHESTER UNITED have made history after becoming the first Premier League club to offer male sanitary facilities. The Red Devils will provide designated bins and products such as pads for men at Old Trafford. It comes after a study found that 50 per cent of those with male bladder weakness attend fewer games due to a lack of facilities and anxiety about leaks. While one in seven (14 per cent) said they had stopped going to games altogether, according to Prostate Cancer UK. But United have now set the benchmark after becoming the first top-flight club to commit to Gold BOG STANDARD accreditation - the minimum requirements that charities are asking organisations to implement to support men with incontinence. That means Kindle customers and devotees aren't expecting cutting-edge technology in a new release. They just want a great device with important but minimal finishing touches that improve upon the previous generation. On one busy Saturday, I stashed the Kindle in my dress pocket to read on the subway in between errands. My friend and I had been walking around the city that day, and I had kept the e-reader in my pocket, where I barely noticed it throughout our journey. On a lazy Sunday morning, I lounged in bed, lying on my side, reading the Kindle with one hand, something I can never do with a physical novel because of how uncomfortable it is to hold ambidextrously. While I was reading, I noticed that the page-turning and book-loading speeds were significantly quicker than on my Kindle Oasis or Kindle Paperwhite from 2022. I tested my old Paperwhite and my new Kindle and found that the new Kindle turned pages a smidgen quicker than the Paperwhite. As far as battery life is concerned, I can't confirm that this e-reader lasts the advertised six weeks because I've only tested the Kindle for a week. Still, six weeks is a long time between charges, and I haven't had any dramatic dips in battery life so far. Also: Amazon just launched four new Kindles, including a full-color model As somebody who enjoys growing her physical book collection but also enjoys sampling various novels and nonfiction books from the library, a Kindle is a great device for reading and renting books you may never pick up and buy but are still interested in. I can fit this portable device into my pocket or work bag and read on the bus, before or after work, or while waiting at doctor appointments. Because reading is its only functionality, the Kindle offers a truly distraction-free interface that makes knocking out reading assignments for high school or college students less intrusive than a laptop or a tablet. I'm not using a Kindle to replace physical books. Instead, I use a Kindle to expand the types and genres of books I'd never plan on owning in the first place. An e-reader (with the help of a library card) allows you to widen the scope of literature that you read and sample different authors and stories that you'd never fit within your bookbag, suitcase, or bookcase. ZDNET's buying advice If you haven't purchased an e-reader before or are contemplating buying one for a loved one over the holidays, I'd without a doubt recommend this Kindle . It has all the features you'd need in a respectable e-reader, like a vivid display, reactive and quick speeds, great battery life, and a lovely color, all for a good price. Because a lot of the specs are unchanged, upgrading from the 2022 base model to the 2024 base model isn't the most reasonable thing to do, unless you aren't pleased with your 2022 Kindle's color, page-turn rate, or display brightness, and are willing to spend $110 to change that. If you want one more inch of display, different e-reader colors, an adjustable warm light for reading in different environments, and double the battery life, you may want to upgrade to the Paperwhite, which is $50 more , but I can read just fine with the base model, I love the pastel-y mint of the Matcha colorway and the compact display, and I can certainly charge my Kindle once every six weeks, so spending $50 more seems silly. Partsol Secures Technology-Enabled Service Subscription with the US ArmySANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chilean President Gabriel Boric is under investigation for sexual harassment, authorities confirmed Tuesday after his personal lawyer sought to portray the head of state as a victim of online stalking. The country’s attorney general, Cristián Crisosto, in a statement said prosecutors have opened “a criminal case related to" allegations filed by an unidentified woman in September. The complaint alleges sexual harassment as well as the leaking of private images. Crisosto did not provide details of the alleged events, or say when or where they took place. Boric, 38, has denied the accusations through his attorney, Jonatan Valenzuela, who in a statement described the president as “the victim of systematic harassment via email.” The alleged harassment occurred between July 2013 and July 2014, when Boric was an intern in the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas, near the Patagonia, and was already a well-known figure in national politics thanks to his role in student-led protests a couple of years earlier. Valenzuela said Boric “never had an emotional or friendly relationship” with the woman and both have not been in communication since July 2014 when she is alleged to have sent the last of dozens of emails, some with explicit images, to the now president. Valenzuela said his team handed authorities all communications between Boric and the woman after learning of her complaint, to “clarify the status of the president as a victim.”
Labor's election finance bill is expected to become law this week with the support of the Coalition. It is a substantial change to how political campaigns are funded, with limits on what can be donated and what can be spent. Labor says it will get "big money" out of politics, but minor parties and independents say it is a smokescreen to entrench major party dominance. They complain the caps of $20,000 per donor, $800,000 per seat and $90 million per party will only meaningfully restrict smaller players, allowing the Labor and Liberal parties to campaign much as they do now. Is that true? It's hard to say, not only because the bill is hundreds of pages long and was released a week ago, but also because we know little about how political parties raise and spend their money. That's because current laws allow one-third of donations to escape disclosure — something the bill would address — and parties do not provide a seat-by-seat breakdown. But from what we can see, there would be scope for the major parties, the Greens, most minor parties and some independents to replicate their 2022 campaigns. The 46-year-old former Victorian batsman finished unbeaten in 169 as the Hillmen racked up 9-302 off 80 overs.
