At least 19 people are sick in Minnesota from ground beef tied to E. coli recall U.S. health officials say at least 19 people in Minnesota have been sickened by E. coli poisoning tied to a national recall of more than 167,000 pounds of potentially tainted ground beef. Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co. recalled the meat sent to restaurants nationwide. Minnesota state agriculture officials reported multiple illnesses and found that a sample of the product tested positive for E. coli, which can cause life-threatening infections. No illnesses have been reported outside of Minnesota. Symptoms of E. coli poisoning include fever, vomiting, diarrhea and signs of dehydration. Emperor penguin released at sea 20 days after waddling onto Australian beach MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The only emperor penguin known to have swum from Antarctica to Australia has been released at sea 20 days after he waddled ashore on a popular tourist beach. The adult male was found on Nov. 1 on sand dunes in temperate southwest Australia about 2,200 miles north of the Antarctic coast. He was released Wednesday from a boat that traveled several hours from Western Australia state's most southerly city of Albany. For his most recent leading role as Mr. Reed in Heretic , Grant traps two young Mormon missionaries in his basement game of faith and horror. Green-haired, dancing orange man aside, Mr. Reed is his most extreme role to date. Playing a man who traps women in cages is as large a departure as he can take, especially when his origins are largely rooted as charming leads in romantic comedies. And not just any romantic leads. Grant has starred in some of the most iconic romantic comedies: Edward Farris in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility , William Thacker in Richard Curtis ‘ Notting Hill , Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral (the first of his three films with the famed romance director), David the Prime Minister in Curtis’ Love Actually . Essential to each of these roles, Grant’s charming smile and self-effacing mumble made him a heartthrob of the ’90s and ’00s. But a heartthrob is not exempt from their red flags. Like a wolf in a beloved Englishman’s clothing, Grant’s characters have always been more villainous than they appear. The actor’s breakthrough role as Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral marked him as good-looking and disarmingly likable. Charles flipped a leading man’s role on his head, appearing as non-threatening and passive, his true motives often taking a backseat to politeness. However, for the friend who forgets rings, arrives late, pursues a woman in a relationship, and abandons his fiancée at the altar, suave and shy are not necessarily the first words that come to mind. Perhaps his most cardinal sin of all was committed in Notting Hill . How did he allow Julia Roberts walk out the door to be ambushed by the paparazzi?! Without her pants?! On multiple occasions, when given the opportunity to profess his feelings to his own heartthrob Anna (played by the real-life movie star Roberts), William chose silence and inaction. He even rejected Anna’s own proposal to pursue the relationship legitimately after he had spent an entire year forlorn about what could have been. Never establishing a backbone to communicate properly with the women he truly loves has perhaps been a throughline of Grant’s romantic career. Even his casting as Edward Farris in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility fits the bill, the price of his inactions and omissions being paid by the woman who loved him most. His most meaningful encounter in the film, in my opinion, came far too late. In the final act, Elinor Dashwood ( Emma Thompson ) realized that Farris had been engaged to and then married a woman of higher society. This was the engagement that Farris had failed to mention during the entirety of their courtship. The man was shelling out his monogrammed kerchiefs left and right. Unforgivable! Lastly, Curtis’ 2003 holiday rom-com Love Actually follows the love stories of 10 different individuals and those in their lives. “Love” is used liberally as Grant is one of the many male characters engaging in inappropriate romantic relationships with his own employees. Grant plays David, the Prime Minister, who initially resists the urge to act on his attraction to a junior member of staff, Natalie ( Martine McCutcheon ). While he presents himself as a moral politician, looking down on the U.S. President ( Billy Bob Thornton ) for making his own advances on Natalie, David acts on his attraction in the end nonetheless. While the pair ends up in a public, seemingly unproblematic relationship (for now) by the end of the film, we can’t overlook their checkered origins. Looking back, Grant has actually always played the villain. We just weren’t looking hard enough. More Headlines:

The future of Sydney coach John Longmire is uncertain ahead of a major club announcement on Tuesday afternoon. The Swans declined to comment amid speculation, put to them by this masthead, that Longmire would quit as coach. Longmire and his manager Liam Pickering were also contacted for comment. One of the most respected and highly regarded coaches in football, the 53-year-old coached the Swans to a premiership in 2012 before suffering grand final losses in 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2024. He was contracted for the upcoming season. People close to Longmire have said he had contemplated walking away from the game in recent years to live on his farm. The Swans have a history of succession planning for their new coaches. Longmire took over from Paul Roos under such a plan. Assistant coach Dean Cox has been part of Sydney’s coaching structure since 2017, and currently oversees game strategy and performance and would be considered highly likely to take over from Longmire. The 42-year-old had been a target of West Coast in their hunt for a senior coach, before the Eagles appointed Andrew McQualter, but Cox opted not to pursue the job . Though the Swans have repeatedly denied he is part of a contracted succession plan with Longmire, the six-time All-Australian ruckman has been seen as Longmire’s logical successor. Longmire has been a vocal critic of the AFL’s soft spending cap for football departments, arguing that coaches and staff were being stretched to the limit. “I think the real challenge for the industry is there’s a lot of really good people working but they’re working enormous hours and putting themselves and their families, in some cases, under some stress,” he said in 2021 . RENTON — There was no rest for the weary Seahawks on Monday. A day after a deflating 27-24 loss to the Vikings that boiled their playoff hopes down to hoping the Cardinals can beat the Rams on Saturday night, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and his staff got to work preparing for a game Thursday night in Chicago against the Bears. Because so much of the Seahawks' fate rests on tiebreakers associated with the Rams and needing them to lose to Arizona — and needing to beat L.A. the following week — the game with the Bears doesn’t have a lot of meaning by itself. While Macdonald acknowledged that the Seahawks losing control of their destiny “stings," he said it won’t affect the team’s approach to the game against the Bears (4-11), who have lost nine in a row. “It doesn’t change anything," Macdonald said during his weekly day-after-game news conference Monday afternoon. “It really doesn’t change your mentality, your approach. It won’t change with our guys. Not worried about that one bit.’’ The bigger issue, he said, is navigating the challenge of a short week and the Christmas holiday. Players had Monday off, other than for treatment of injuries, with the coaches using the day to prepare a game plan. The Seahawks will practice Tuesday and Wednesday before flying to Chicago. They usually travel two days before a game in the Central or Eastern time zones, but they are accommodating for the short week. Macdonald said that it might be the best for the team’s psyche and moving past a difficult defeat in which the Seahawks had the Vikings (13-2) on the ropes before letting a late lead slip away. “I guess the best gift you can get after a tough loss like that is an opportunity to move forward on a short week and get going,’’ he said. “So [we] altered the short week schedule a little bit." Macdonald also addressed a few other issues. Here’s a recap: Running back Kenneth Walker III left in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and didn’t return. He was listed as not being able to practice if the team had practiced Monday in the report the team had to release by NFL rules. “No updates right now on him,’’ Macdonald said. “But getting a test done. We’ll have a good idea of what it looks like over the next day or two.’’ Zach Charbonnet played 14 snaps backing up Walker after dealing with an oblique injury last week. He also was on the injury report Monday as limited with an elbow issue. Macdonald indicated Charbonnet will be OK for Thursday. “Seemed like he was limited during the game, but signs are positive with Zach right now,’’ Macdonald said. That means Charbonnet likely starts if Walker can’t go, backed up by Kenny McIntosh. While there was lots to lament in the wake of the loss, Macdonald said on his radio show on Seattle Sports 710 that a sack taken by Geno Smith when the Seahawks had a first-and-10 at Minnesota’s 37 with 3:04 left “was probably our worst play of the game as a whole offensive operation." Macdonald didn’t assess any specific blame other than to say, “That’s one where we have to be better in that moment, really for everybody involved.’’ The Seahawks, who trailed 27-24, gained only 1 yard on the ensuing two plays, which forced them into a decision facing fourth-and-15 at the 42 at the two-minute warning. The Seahawks had the time out to think about it before opting for a 60-yard field goal attempt by Jason Myers, which came up a few yards short. Macdonald said the next option would have been to punt and try to pin the Vikings back and use their two remaining time outs to get the ball back. “We would have had faith in our defense to go get a stop,’’ he said. Macdonald said he felt like the decision to let Myers kick is what would have “helped us win the game the most. ... That’s a tough ask of (Myers), but the guy’s a gamer, man, a competitor. He wanted a crack at it, so we gave it to him.’’ Macdonald said he wouldn’t go into detail to assess blame on specific plays, including the two interceptions thrown by Geno Smith. Smith’s picks included one thrown in the direction of DK Metcalf from their own 12-yard-line with 55 seconds left. The pass seemed like one made out of desperation as Smith was under pressure and with no timeouts, a sack would have been disastrous. Vikings safety Theo Jackson said he was “just as surprised as you all were’’ that Smith threw the ball his way. “We were in two-high. I saw him throw it and I was kind of confused myself as to why he threw it,’’ Jackson said. “I’m going to catch the ones he throws to me.’’ Smith threw for 314 yards, completing 31 of 43 passes and tied a season-high with three touchdown, and Macdonald praised his overall play. “He did some really great things,’’ Macdonald said. “You know, if we get a stop when we're up four in the end of the fourth quarter, we're having a different conversation right now. Everybody wants to talk about the interceptions and rightfully so, and those are things that we're working through, but I mean, one of the reasons that we're here with life, like I said last night, is I really felt that Geno's helped put us in this position. So, I thought he played a strong game."
