"We've made reality obsolete — interesting choice," said Maher. "Parents today, it's kind of the worst of both worlds. Too much hovering in real life, where there is any left, and then none with virtual. You go in your room, lock yourself in there with the portal of evil that is the phone. ... I feel like parents, in each generation, ceded more control to children." In response, Haidt — a self-avowed Jewish atheist — stressed that modern life continues to eat away at the traditions of the past. "As life gets easier, as people get wealthier, as we move away from the old days, authority tends to decay — there tends to be less respect for authority, less respect for the old ways," said Haidt. "Kids need structure, they need moral rules. ... When it seems as though anything is permissible, it doesn't make people happy. It makes them feel disoriented and lost." Maher has made it clear that he is "not a tech enthusiast," noted Emily Harrison, in her "Dear Christian Parent" Substack newsletter. But the shocker in that HBO exchange was his claim that smartphones serve as a "portal of evil" in daily life. "Wait. What? ... Yes, smartphones can do lots of great things but they also have made the proliferation of pornography mind boggling (sic.) large," wrote Harrison. We don't want to say that smartphones are dangerous to young people — even if the evidence clearly shows that is true," said Harrison, reached by telephone days before speaking at Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's Nov. 21 "Reclaiming Childhood" summit on mental health issues. "As believers, we don't want to say things that make people walk away feeling sad, and our pastors certainly don't want to make people mad," she added. "It's like we don't have enough faith to trust that telling them the truth could help them in the long run." In her newsletters, Harrison has pointed readers to the waves of statistics used by Haidt and other activists. For example, the U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health revealed that since 2010 — when smartphones entered public life — anxiety has risen 52% among people ages 35-49, 103% among those 26-34 and 139% among those 18-25. An American College Health Association survey found between 2010 and 2020 anxiety rose 134%, depression 106%, anorexia 100% and substance abuse 33%. Finally, she believes religious leaders should urge parents to stop giving smartphones to their children under the age of 18. The WikiLeaks documents revealed similar moves by Samir Geagea, the LFP chief, after the July 2006 war in which Hezbollah shattered the myth of Israel’s invincibility. Samir Geagea, who is notoriously famous for his cruelty during the Lebanese 1975-1990 civil war, has rushed to hold an extraordinary meeting in the presence of LFP’s parliamentary bloc and executive body to inform them about his upcoming conspiracy against Hezbollah, what the US-led Israeli aggression on Lebanon failed to achieve. Geagea has proposed a plan to dismantle Hezbollah’s structure north of the Litani River to eliminate it militarily and politically and undermine its social base. The LFP chief has “advised” Hezbollah to return its weapons to Iran, without the slightest condemnation of the Israeli violations of the “truce”. He claimed that Hezbollah was the side that committed a “major crime against the Lebanese.” Geagea has deliberately ignored all Lebanese ministerial statements that legitimized the resistance, claiming that Hezbollah’s weapons were not “legitimate”, demanding they be handed over to the Lebanese army. The LFP chief threatened: “Anyone thinking that it is possible to return to the stage before October 7, 2023, Beware!! It is impossible to return to what we were before. Tell us if you do not want a state so that we know how to act. Our choice is clear, which is to limit weapons to the Lebanese army. Let Hezbollah’s members work as municipal police.” Geagea – who is aspiring to take the post of resident – has not learned any lessons from the consequences of playing the cards of civil skirmishes and sectarian incitement as he highly aspires to “disarm” the resistance movement, which the Israeli enemy has failed to accomplish. It is worth reminding readers that 12 years ago, during the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria, the Lebanese Forces Party made a “solidarity” visit to Gaza. Instead of heading to Gaza, MP Antoine Zahra, who led the delegation, could visit the Palestinian camps in Lebanon known for worse humanitarian conditions because the LFP MPs and their allies purposely obstructed the approval of their social and civil rights. However, the visit aimed to mislead the Palestinians and drag them into the quagmire of the foreign-backed terrorism in Syria. Meanwhile, the Syrian army and its allies in the Axis of Resistance continue their attacks on the US bases. This reveals the failure of the “deterrence” strategy that Washington recently adopted by intensifying its attacks on sites within the areas controlled by the Syrian army. In parallel, Washington continues to bring in ground military convoys and carry out joint training with the Free Syrian Army at the Tanf base, providing them with various artillery and missile systems to promote their capabilities to launch ground attacks on the Syrian army and its allies. The US Central Command announced that it had struck a target of an “Iranian-backed” group in Syria. CENTCOM commander Michael Kurilla has reiterated that the US forces “are committed” to taking all necessary measures to ensure the protection of their personnel. According to a new paper in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections , 846 million people worldwide are genitally infected with the herpes simplex virus—which causes both genital and oral herpes—with 42 million new cases in 2020 alone. During the same year, the researchers predict that over 200 million 15 to 49-year-olds likely had at least one outbreak of the infection. This marks an increase in estimated cases from previous years, indicating that the development of new treatments and vaccines is urgently needed. " Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2 infections are lifelong, globally prevalent, and cause a significant disease burden, including symptomatic genital ulcer disease (GUD), and economic costs," the researchers wrote in the paper. There are two forms of herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2, both spread via skin-to-skin contact. HSV-1 primarily causes oral herpes, while HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes, though both types can cause infection in both locations. HSV infections are incurable, establishing a latent infection in nerve cells , and can cause occasional flare-ups of painful blisters or sores. Around the mouth, these are often known as cold sores, or genital ulcer disease when around the genitals. "In addition to the painful genital sores, genital herpes is associated with a range of social and psychological adverse outcomes, including effects on sexual relations, quality of life, and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem," the researchers wrote. According to the paper, the number of people aged 15–49 years with genital infections from HSV-2 or HSV-1 worldwide in 2020 was 846.1 million. Some 520 million of these are thought to be due to HSV-2, with 26 million new cases of HSV-2 being recorded in 2020. Of these new cases, 15.6 million were female and 10 million were male. Around 4 billion people worldwide—two-thirds of the global population—are thought to be infected with HSV-1, the majority of which only have the oral form of the infection. However, in 2020, 376 million 15–49 year olds had the genital form of HSV-1, and 17 million new people were infected that year. About 13% of the 🌐 population aged 15 to 49 lived with #herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection in 2016. HSV-2 is almost exclusively sexually transmitted, causing genital herpes. HSV-2 tends to shed more frequently than HSV-1 in the genital area, and people who recently acquired the infection are more likely to experience shedding than those who have had the virus for a long time. After infection from HSV, many people never develop symptoms . However, others may experience severe pain from the sores, especially during the first outbreak . The virus never goes away, lying dormant in the nerve cells, and may occasionally reactivate and cause recurrent sores. These flare-ups may be triggered by illness, stress, injuries, sun exposure, or even menstruation. The researchers also found that about 188 million people with HSV-2 and 17 million people with HSV-1 had at least one episode of genital sores in 2020 alone. During periods where a flare-up is not occurring, the virus isn't usually transmissible, although asymptomatic shedding can occur periodically in both HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections, even in people who have no visible outbreaks. Daily suppressive therapy with antivirals can reduce the frequency of asymptomatic shedding, lower the risk of transmission, and also prevent flare-ups of sores. However, they cannot completely clear the virus from the body. This study shows that huge numbers of people around the world are infected with herpes. In the U.S., herpes infections are also incredibly prevalent: CDC data shows that there were 572,000 new genital herpes infections in the U.S. in 2018 alone. In 2023, the CDC recorded 209,000 cases of syphilis, 600,000 cases of gonorrhea, and over 1.6 million cases of chlamydia. The researchers note that therefore there is a widespread need for more sophisticated treatment for HSV, as it affects so many and has such a large stigma attached to it. "Available prevention modalities, including condoms and antiviral therapy, are insufficient to control infection transmission and have, at best, had a modest population impact in reducing incidence rates," the researchers wrote. "There is a need for HSV prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines as a strategic approach to control transmission and to curb the disease and economic burdens of these infections."
