No. 25 Illinois rebounds in big way, blasts UMES 87-40There are times when a postseason bowl seems like the first game of next year for the participating teams. That cliche means something a little different for NC State and East Carolina. The Wolfpack and Pirates face each other in the Military Bowl on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland. Then they'll see each other again in about eight months. NC State opens the 2025 season at home against ECU on Aug. 30. There is certainly plenty of familiarity between these two programs, even though NC State (6-6) is in the ACC and East Carolina (7-5) is in the AAC. The teams — located about 80 miles apart — have met 32 times, most recently in 2022 when the Wolfpack won 21-20. From 1970-87, these teams played each other every year. Since 2004, they haven't gone more than two consecutive seasons without meeting. “Hour and a half down the road and you're playing — whether you play every year or don't play every year — I think it's still a rivalry," East Carolina coach Blake Harrell said. "Our fans still get excited. They still think that's a rivalry. Our players still think that's a rivalry.” NC State leads the series 19-13 and has won three straight — but East Carolina won three in a row before that. “It's weird playing a team that we open with next year,” Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said. “We don't play them that much. We play them every three years, so it's really a roster turnover. Every time we see them, it's a different ballclub for the most part. But yeah, finishing with who you open with is unique.” NC State and East Carolina met in the Peach Bowl in 1992 — during an eight-year hiatus in their regular-season series. ECU scored three touchdowns in the final 7:26 to win 37-34. “We had that time during COVID, we obviously all had some down time. I remember searching through YouTube, just past games to check out. That game did pop up," Harrell said. "That was a special moment for that team and that program at the time, and this could be a special moment for this team and this program.” NC State is playing in the Military Bowl for the first time. East Carolina was supposed to participate in 2021, but the game was canceled. The Pirates lost to Maryland in the 2010 edition. Harrell took over on an interim basis in the middle of the season when Mike Houston was fired. After leading the Pirates to four straight wins, Harrell had the interim tag removed . Freshman CJ Bailey took over at quarterback for NC State this season after concussion problems ended Grayson McCall's career. Bailey has completed 64.1% of his passes. Only Philip Rivers and Russell Wilson threw for more touchdowns as a freshman for the Wolfpack than Bailey, who has 14 TD tosses. “He's a really good player. Doesn't play like a freshman to me,” Harrell said. "Makes really good throws down the field, has a really good arm, and then if he takes off scrambling or if the quarterback-designed run game, he's a long strider. He can eat up some ground. Saquon Barkley has become the Shohei Ohtani of the NFL. There's no better home run hitter playing football right now. Barkley had touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. He now has five runs of 50-plus yards this season and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Barkley's historic performance against the Rams — his 255 yards set a team record — captivated a national audience and turned him into a fan favorite for the AP NFL MVP award. He's not the betting favorite, however. Josh Allen has the best odds at plus-150, according to Bet MGM Sportsbook. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson is next at plus-250 followed by Barkley at plus-400. Running backs have won the award 18 times, including three-time winner Jim Brown, who was the AP's first NFL MVP in 1957. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning it 45 times. Only three players who weren't QBs or RBs have been MVP. It takes a special season for a non-QB to win it mainly because the offense goes through the signal caller. Quarterbacks handle the ball every offensive snap, run the show and get the credit when things go well and the blame when it doesn't. Adrian Peterson was the most recent non-QB to win it when he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. Playing for a winning team matters, too. Nine of the past 11 winners played for a No. 1 seed with the other two winners on a No. 2 seed. The Vikings earned the sixth seed when Pederson was MVP. Barkley is a major reason why the Eagles (9-2) are leading the NFC East and only trail Detroit (10-1) by one game for the top spot in the conference. Does he have a realistic chance to win the MVP award? Kicker Mark Moseley was the MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season when he made 20 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 extra points in nine games for Washington. If voters once selected a kicker, everyone has a chance, especially a game-changer such as Barkley. Defensive tackle Alan Page was the MVP in 1971 and linebacker Lawrence Taylor won it in 1986. Running back Christian McCaffrey finished third in voting last year and wide receiver Justin Jefferson placed fifth in 2022. The Offensive Player of the Year award and Defensive Player of the Year award recognize the best all-around players on both sides of the ball, allowing voters to recognize non-QBs if they choose. Wide receivers and running backs have won the AP OPOY award seven times over the past 11 seasons. McCaffrey was the 2023 winner. The AP's new voting format introduced in 2022 also gives non-QBs a better opportunity to get MVP recognition. Voter submit their top five picks for each award, with a weighted point system. Previously, voters made one choice for each award. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league vote for MVP and seven other awards. The awards are based on regular-season performance. The Chiefs (10-1) and Bills (9-2) already are in position to lock up postseason berths right after Thanksgiving. Kansas City clinches a playoff berth with a win over Las Vegas on Black Friday and a loss by Miami on Thursday night, or a win plus a loss by Denver on Monday night. Buffalo can wrap up a fifth straight AFC East title with a victory over San Francisco on Sunday and a loss by the Dolphins. It's not a given that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach after this season. Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on local radio that Mike McCarthy could end up getting a contract extension. "I don't think that's crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left," Jones said. McCarthy led the Cowboys (4-7) to three straight 12-win seasons, but they went 1-3 in the playoffs and haven't reached the NFC championship game since winning the Super Bowl 29 years ago. MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler will not play in the final two games of Miami's ongoing road trip while recovering from illness, the team said Friday. That means Butler will not play Saturday at Atlanta or Sunday at Houston. The earliest he could play again is Wednesday at home against New Orleans. Butler hasn't played since the first quarter of Miami's Dec. 20 game against Oklahoma City, when he twisted an ankle, left the game and then was ruled out because of illness. Miami has played three games since without Butler, two because of the illness and then Thursday's win in Orlando with him back in Miami conditioning for a return. He is not with the team on the road trip. The Heat said Thursday that they are not going to trade Butler, that announcement coming after ESPN, citing sources, said the six-time All-Star would prefer to be moved before the trade deadline on Feb. 6. Butler has not publicly expressed any desire to be traded. He is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season. Jo Horgan, founder and chief executive of Mecca , said she believed the Bourke Street Mall Mecca store would be the biggest dedicated beauty store in the world when completed and would become a destination in its own right. “27 years later everything we have done before has culminated in us opening what we hope will be the Mecca of all Meccas,” she said. “I have always been foolishly optimistic and I totally believe in people and consumers and I think if we build it, they will come.” Mecca’s store will span three floors and 4000 square metres stocking more than 200 beauty brands. Advertising firm Clemenger will occupy the floors above Mecca. The store will house a perfumeria dedicated to fragrances, an apothecary wellness hub, a salon for make-up, hair and nail services and ‘Meccaversity’ – a 150-seat educational space for Mecca staff and customers housed in a suspended pod installed on the first floor of the building. Horgan said signing up in the middle of COVID lockdowns to a very complicated project came with its challenges, especially with an “old, culturally significant building”. The site first housed the Coles Book Arcade, a three-storey book store that was once the largest bookstore in the world. “We fell in love with the site, Coles was the largest bookstore in the world, there was a romance in going from the largest bookstore to the largest beauty store,” Horgan said. There’s always been retail over this side, but all the big new shiny objects have always been on the northern side.” Jansen said David Jones moving its menswear department across the road to the southern side of the Bourke Street Mall had opened up the precinct for redevelopment to occur. Melbourne Walk will house two hotels, Hotel Indigo and a Holiday Inn, alongside several stores, including flagship tenant JD Sports. Hayden Djakic, associate at architecture practice Buchan, said the design team wanted to introduce something “quite different” to Melbourne. Representative image NEW DELHI: Retail sales of vehicles across categories in India grew 11.2% at 32,08,719 units in Nov, as compared to 28,85,317 units in same month last year, riding on two-wheeler demand, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said in Monday. Retail sales of two-wheelers were at 26,15,953 units last month compared to 22,58,970 units in Nov 2023, a growth of 15.8% buoyed by the festive spillover. On the other hand, passenger vehicle (PV) retail was down 13.7% at 3,21,943 units, as against 3,73,140 units in the year-ago month. The PV segment faced notable headwinds, FADA said. "While Nov was initially expected to build on prior momentum, particularly due to marriage season, dealer feedback suggests this segment underperformed expectations," FADA president C S Vigneshwar said. "Although rural markets offered some support, in the two-wheeler category, marriage-related sales remained subdued." Jack Donaghy, the 2015 Daily Times Player of the Year, shared his insights on the importance of the storied rivalry. Donaghy, who threw for a then-program record 5,296 yards during his illustrious career – a record broken by Jake Ruane in 2018 – was instrumental in leading the Fords to the Central League title his senior year. In a winner-take-all showdown with Upper Darby in 2015, Donaghy delivered a legendary performance with 307 passing yards, five touchdowns through the air and two more rushing scores, including a dramatic 19-yard run to the end zone with 18 seconds left to secure the victory. “Jack’s in town so he was gracious enough to come in and talk about the 2015 season and all of the prep work that goes into a rivalry game,” Dougherty said after practice Monday night. “He just reminded these guys what a big one it is, and they were excited to hear from him. And it’s even bigger for us because it’s for the Central League championship.” This season, both programs have taken significant strides forward. Haverford has seen a dramatic turnaround, going from 1-9 last year to 10-2. Upper Darby, while it failed to qualify for districts, has improved to 5-5 and closed the regular season with consecutive wins over Harriton and Lower Merion. The Royals will face the Fords after a month-long layoff since their last game. The Fords had hoped to push their playoff run past the second round, but fell to North Penn. Rather than dwell on the loss, they quickly shifted their focus to the Thanksgiving showdown. “Wins and losses aside, this group ... they love football,” Dougherty said. “This is like an easy sell to them because, one, the tradition of the game is amazing. Two, I think when we went out and practiced for the first time after the North Penn loss, we felt like we shot ourselves in the foot on both sides of the ball and on special teams, so these guys were like, let’s fix the mistakes and make sure we don’t make similar mistakes on Thanksgiving. That was their mindset pretty quickly. They bounced back. They were hurt by the North Penn loss, but motivated knowing that they’ve got one more ... and it’s a big one.” Whereas Taylor, with over 30 touchdowns, has been the Fords’ offensive superstar, senior defensive end Jake Lisicki has been a game-changer on the other side of the ball. Lisicki ranks among Pennsylvania’s top pass rushers with 15 sacks, which is a Haverford single-season record. He’s also tallied 39 tackles, forced two fumbles and snagged an interception. “I guess I’ve never been a guy who has played just one position. I played safety before and I switched positions coming into this season,” Lisicki said. “Once I knew I would be a defensive end for this year, I really knew what I had to do to hone in on and work on to become a better player.” On offense, Lisicki contributes as a blocking tight end, anchoring the edge for the run game. Lisicki has committed to Marist College. “It’s been great to be part of that group on offense,” he said. “I think most receivers might tell you they want to pass more, but I think it’s fun running the ball. I just like blocking people.” Dougherty knows that without players like Lisicki setting blocks, Taylor wouldn’t be knocking on the door of breaking the county’s rushing record. “He’s so physical, so long, and he’s a weight room kid. There’s a reason why he’s going to play Division I football, and it’s because he’s got all the ability in the world,” Dougherty said. “We were hard on him as a junior because we saw that potential. He worked hard in the weight room in the offseason and it’s really showed. He’s just an awesome kid and we’re really going to miss him next year.” The opening kickoff is set for 10 a.m. at A.G. Cornog Field. The Fords lead the series against the Royals with a 50-45-6 record. “Upper Darby has done a great job this year.
