Jadon Hardiman, 21, was found guilty in Gibson County of charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses, district attorney Frederick Agee said in a statement. He faces up to 76 years in prison at sentencing in April. Hardiman, of Jackson, attended a basketball game between Humboldt and North Side high schools on Nov. 30, 2021. Then 18, Hardiman entered the Humboldt gymnasium's crowded concession area and pulled a semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun, prosecutors said. He fired three shots at Justin Pankey, a 21-year-old former Humboldt basketball player. Pankey was hit one time and died within seconds, Agee said. A second bullet hit Xavier Clifton, a former North Side student and basketball player, who was standing in the concession line. Clifton was shot in the neck and paralyzed. He died in March 2022. A third shot struck another man in the back of the head. He survived. “Many people were placed in fear of imminent bodily injury by Hardiman’s shooting, as shown by video footage of their fleeing into the gym, into bathrooms, and other areas of the school,” Agee said. Hardiman ran away and drove to Jackson, disposing of the murder weapon along the way, the district attorney said. The U.S. Marshals Service contacted his family, and he was arrested the next day. Agee said the shooting "frightened every adult, student, and child present, who were only there to support their team and enjoy a good game.”

Victor Wembanyama went to a park in New York City and played 1-on-1 with fans on Saturday. He even lost a couple of games. Not in basketball, though. Wemby was playing chess. And this wasn't on a whim: He knows how to play and even brought his own chess set. Before the San Antonio Spurs left New York for a flight to Minnesota, Wembanyama put out the call on social media: “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there,” Wembanyama wrote. It was 9:36 a.m. People began showing up almost immediately. Washington Square Park is a known spot for chess in New York — Bobby Fischer among others have famously played there, and it's been used for multiple movie scenes featuring the game. Wembanyama was there for an hour in the rain, from about 10-11 a.m. He played four games, winning two and losing two — he told Bleacher Report afterward that both of the losses were to professional chess players — before departing to catch the Spurs' flight. Wembanyama had been trying to get somewhere to play chess for the bulk of the team's time in New York — the Spurs played the Knicks on Christmas and won at Brooklyn on Friday night. The schedule never aligned, until Saturday morning. And even with bad weather, he bundled up to make it happen. He posed for photos with a couple of dozen people who showed up, braving a morning of cold rain to play chess with one of the NBA's biggest stars. “We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner,” he wrote on social media after his chess trip was over. Wembanyama is averaging 25.2 points and 10.1 rebounds this season, his second in the NBA after winning rookie of the year last season. The Spurs play at Minnesota on Sunday. HARRISBURG — Spending on public education, reforming aspects of health care, loosening regulations on business and strengthening the commonwealth’s workforce were among the legislative wins achieved in 2024 in Pennsylvania’s General Assembly. Lawmakers adopted Pennsylvania’s biggest budget, to date, a $47.6 billion spending plan with a deficit balanced by $3 billion transferred from the commonwealth’s reserves. Gov. Josh Shapiro and his supporters welcomed the move, spending down on what had been a combined $14 billion in savings they viewed as a reinvestment in taxpayers whose money sat dormant. Fiscal conservatives point to a five-year outlook in the budget that forecasts all of that money being spent by 2029, warning that the structural deficit risks fiscal insolvency. The budget included a $1.2 billion increase for public education as the commonwealth grapples with a late-2023 court decision that found its funding system unconstitutional. Schools collectively saw multi-million hikes in spending on special education, K-12 classroom subsidies plus additional funds for the poorest districts to backfill an “adequacy gap” identified by the court, plus more funding for mental health initiatives and security. Expect more record requests for spending on education in the immediate budget years to come as the commonwealth upturns its system on how public schools are funded. At the same time, a fight to establish a school voucher system will continue, too. Lifeline Scholarships were shunned two years in a row, however, Republicans remain committed to creating vouchers in the name of school choice. They’re emboldened by shifts in political party registrations and substantial victories in the 2024 election cycle. Budget battles might lead some in Harrisburg and beyond to seek libations for a brief escape and this year in Pennsylvania, those of legal age have a new option. Legislators advanced a bill into law creating a new permit for licensed bars, restaurants, grocery stores and more to sell canned cocktails to-go. The pre-packaged, pre-mixed drinks were only available in state liquor stores prior to the change. Estimates reached $145 million in new tax revenue, however, the gains will be offset to some degree by lost revenue within the state-owned system. Pennsylvania’s bars and restaurants also benefitted from other regulatory changes that expanded aggregate time allowed for happy hours from 14 hours to 24 hours a week and also permitted drink-and-meal combination discounts that were once illegal. Lawmakers approved reforms in health care with a new law that changes how pharmacy benefit managers operate in the commonwealth. The “middle men” are blamed for practices causing smaller pharmacies to close and consumer prices to rise. Pennsylvania’s legislation bars PBMs from lowering reimbursements for unaffiliated pharmacies, prevents them from spiking prices on medications above what customers might pay when using cash out of pocket, ends certain “steering practices” that lead to increased business for affiliated pharmacies and requires certain reporting requirements that will reveal which companies fail to pass on manufacturer rebates to customers. Story continues below video Aside from public education, state lawmakers made big changes in the realm of higher education. They created Pennsylvania’s first State Board of Higher Education directed to coordinate higher-ed across all levels and also develop recommendations to create a performance-based funding system for state-related universities including Penn State and the University of Pittsburgh. Funding for smaller schools, that is, community colleges and state-owned schools, was increased as was funding for student scholarships and grants along with a new program that for the first time will provide stipends to student teachers. A new telemedicine law assures patients that any medically necessary service they’d receive in person that’s covered by their insurance plan would also be covered if administered remotely through telemedicine. Disputes preventing Pennsylvania’s full participation in an interstate healthcare licensure compact were resolved through legislation concerning fingerprinting and background checks. With a resolution in place, nurses and doctors and others from Pennsylvania can now work in cooperating states without obtaining another license. Xylazine is now formally listed as a Schedule III narcotic in the commonwealth. Protections are included for veterinary use of the sedative developed for large animals. Illicit production of the drug led to it being cut into fentanyl and other opioids sold on the streets, greatly enhancing potency and the risk of death by overdose. Distracted driving was addressed with the passage of Paul Miller’s Law, named after a 21-year-old Scranton man killed by a distracted driver in 2010. The measure, building on an existing statute that bans texting while driving, authorizes traffic stops for similar actions on handheld mobile devices including sending an email, posting to social media, snapping a photo and recording a video. The use of hands-free functions, however, remains permissible. New state law also created a Solar for Schools program incentivizing K-12 public schools, career and technical centers and community colleges to pursue state grant funding that can fund half the construction cost of an approved solar energy project. Another law established the framework for carbon dioxide capture, utilization and sequestration toward storing the pollutant below ground, an initiative tied to the multi-billion dollar proposal to open a pair of hydrogen hubs in the Philadelphia region. The 2023-24 Legislative Session is now closed and the 2025-26 session began Dec. 1 with lawmakers already signaling the introduction of new bills and the reintroduction of old bills that haven’t yet cleared the House and Senate. When voting picks up again in January, expect continued debate and formal proposals for legislative initiatives that weren’t successful including legalizing marijuana for recreational use, enacting gun control measures, approving ballot measures for constitutional amendments on universal voter ID and opening a temporary legal window to sue alleged perpetrators or enablers of long-ago sexual abuse, creating Lifeline Scholarships for school choice, regulating skill games, expanding Sunday hunting opportunities and boosting Pennsylvania’s housing stock. Gourmet Market, the supermarket brand of The Mall Group, plans to open 1-2 new stores next year amid challenging economic conditions. Supawut Chaiprasitkul, chief business officer for supermarkets and food at The Mall Group, said spending among the middle class for Thai fast-moving consumer goods dipped by single digits in October month-on-month, according to data from Nielsen Thailand, a market research firm. "This could mean the sluggish economy has affected the middle-income segment in the country," he said. The purchasing power of the high-income segment might not be affected by the gloomy economy, though Mr Supawut said they could be more cautious with their spending. However, the company has not experienced a significant impact from this segment as customer spending remains stable, he said. Average spending per bill for M card customers, the loyalty programme of The Mall Group, is around 3,000 baht. Mr Supawut said the Thai retail market is expected to be tough next year as the country still faces a high level of household debt amid global political uncertainty. Thailand's household debt-to-GDP ratio was 89.6% in the second quarter, a slight drop from 90.7% in the previous quarter, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council. To navigate through these headwinds, the company aims to focus more on creating a personalised shopping experience for customers. For in-store shopping, Gourmet Market plans to launch the Gourmet Market Smart Cart on Dec 12 at Siam Paragon, Emporium and EmQuartier, expanding to The Mall Lifestyle Stores in 2025, said Ploychompu Umphuj, vice-president of merchandising at Gourmet Market. The carts are equipped with digital touchscreens and barcode scanners that help customers find products and access promotions and pricing. Customers can make their payment directly through the Smart Cart Self-Check Out dedicated lane, without having to put products through the barcode scanner again. Furthermore, the company plans to renovate some of its existing stores to feature more restaurant space as it believes customers will have a high demand for eateries next year, said Mr Supawut. The eateries inside Gourmet Market will vary to suit the store's location, such as food courts, takeaways, or restaurants. Moreover, the company also plans to add more products with fresh ingredients, with the aim of increasing the proportion of fresh ingredients to 50%, from 20%. Gourmet Market has 17 stores located in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Nakhon Ratchasima. The company aims to add 1-2 branches each year, Mr Supawut said.CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Jacob Hutson's 20 points helped Northern Iowa defeat Southern Illinois 78-67 on Sunday. Wide receiver Dallas Wilson, a five-star Class of 2025 prospect, signed with Florida. The move came just days after he asked Oregon to release him from his commitment. He signed with the Ducks on Dec. 4, the first day of the early signing period. The 247Sports composite ranks Wilson, a Florida product from Tampa Bay Tech, as the No. 4 wide receiver and No. 20 overall player in the class. Florida announced his signing with a video posted to social media Sunday night. Wilson had been committed to the Ducks since Jan. 17, 2023, taking an official visit there in June 2024 and one to Florida on Nov. 22. But The Athletic reported last week that Wilson's agent, Vernell Brown of EL1TE Sports Management Group, said Wilson changed his mind to remain closer to an ill family member, adding NIL money was not a factor. A 6-foot-3 speedster, Wilson also runs track and was part of his school's 4x400 relay team that qualified for the state competition in his junior year. --Field Level MediaHMRC has sent out a warning to taxpayers about the risk of incurring a "large tax bill" if they don't do an important check. The alert was issued following an enquiry from a taxpayer over X on how to handle a tax obligation on their US pension. The person said they understood they could pay their self assessment tax return via PAYE. They went on to ask: "I meet all the conditions, My self assessment payment is for a USA Pension. Can I still pay by PAYE? If so who do I contact at HMRC?" HMRC first sought clarification on whether the person's bill pertained to the 2023/2024 or 2024/2025 tax year. The taxpayer confirmed it was for 2024/2025. The tax officials then advised: "The balancing payment for the 23/24 tax year would be collected through the PAYE income source commencing 6th April 2025." The taxpayer had a further question about how they could sign up for PAYE given they currently pay the tax on their USA pension via self assessment. The concerned taxpayer expressed: "I was originally told that tax for foreign pensions had to be via self assessment. However I believe there is a reciprocal arrangement US/UK which may mean tax on my US pension can be paid via PAYE?" Responding to this, HMRC firmly explained the rules, warning they "cannot operate PAYE" on a foreign pension, and further emphasising that the individual "must declare this to us". The department further elaborated on the rules, explaining: "The reciprocal arrangement is the double taxation agreement that stipulates who is entitled to the tax on this income and where any claim to foreign tax relief is to be given. "If you wish for this pension to be included in your PAYE code to avoid having a large tax bill at the end of the year please contact us." The tax authority also clarified that opting for this does not eliminate the need to report the tax through self-assessment. HMRC recently had another query from a customer wondering how the rules work, as regards ISAs. The saver questioned: "Can I open a cash ISA, LISA and stocks and shares ISA in the same financial year?" The tax body responded: "Yes, as long as you don't exceed your £20,000 ISA allowance in any given tax year." The Lifetime ISA is a way for first-time homebuyers to save up for their property, offering a 25 percent deposit bonus. You can deposit up to £4,000 meaning a maximum bonus of £1,000. However, individuals are warned that these funds are strictly meant for first property purchases or you can access them once you reach the age of 60. Any other withdrawals incur a 25 percent charge.

The Shale Giant Showdown: 2 Oil Stocks to Watch in 2025During his first term in office, Trump oversaw a series of federal executions unparalleled in modern history. United States President-elect Donald Trump has promised to step up the use of the death penalty during his second term in office, saying he will go after “rapists, murderers, and monsters”. Trump’s announcement on Tuesday came after outgoing President Joe Biden used his presidential pardon powers to reduce the sentences of nearly all federal prisoners on death row to life imprisonment without parole. “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters,” Trump said in a social media post. “We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!” During his first term in office, Trump resumed federal executions after a nearly 20-year pause, overseeing the executions of 13 people . That figure was higher than any president in modern history. While people in the US continue to support the death penalty for crimes such as murder, that support is at its lowest point in decades, dropping from 80 percent in favour in 1994 to 53 percent in 2024, according to Gallup polling. In the same period, opposition has risen from 16 percent to 43 percent. Supporters of the death penalty say capital punishment can give family members of victims of violent crimes a sense of closure and acts as a deterrent against crime although studies have found little evidence for the latter. “The pain and trauma we have endured over the last 7 years has been indescribable,” Heather Turner, whose mother was killed during a 2017 bank robbery in Conway, South Carolina, said in a social media post blasting Biden’s decision. Opponents say innocent people have been wrongly executed before they were exonerated, that the process for executing someone is long and costly and the death penalty has been wielded disproportionately against people of colour. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump leaned heavily into nativist attacks on immigrants that portrayed them as dangerous criminals and said he would seek the death penalty for undocumented immigrants who commit crimes such as murder and rape against US citizens. Immigrants commit violent crimes at a lower rate than people born in the US, and immigrant rights groups see dark undertones in Trump’s fixation on violent acts committed by immigrants. The three federal prisoners on death row whose sentences Biden chose not to commute were all found guilty of hate-motivated crimes. They are Dylann Roof , who killed nine Black congregants of the Mother Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina in 2015; 2013 Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev; and Robert Bowers, who carried out the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in US history when he gunned down 17 congregants at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018, killing 11.
