(Miguel Martinez/Atlanta Journal-Constitution via AP) ATLANTA (AP) — Deliberations are underway in Atlanta after a year of testimony in the gang and racketeering trial that originally included the rapper Young Thug. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. The jury started deliberating Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed at 5 p.m. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. If they don’t reach a verdict by 3 p.m. Wednesday, the judge will send them home for the Thanksgiving weekend and they will return Monday morning. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. Prosecutors dropped charges against one defendant after he was convicted of murder in an unrelated case. ___ Kramon is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions spent three months scoring at a historic rate. Now with the weather changing outside, they’re winning with old school football, too. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for two scores , David Montgomery added a third TD run and Detroit's increasingly stingy defense kept the Indianapolis Colts out of the end zone on Sunday, leading the Lions to their ninth straight win, 24-6. “This is, whatever it is, 10 quarters without allowing a touchdown and the three last games in the second half we're not allowing it,” coach Dan Campbell said. “We talk about it all the time — limiting points, play physical style, shut down the run — we were able to do that.” They've been doing it all season in their greatest run in decades, but have been more effective lately and it has shown. The Lions improved to 10-1 for the first time since 1934, their inaugural season in the Motor City. They own the league's longest active winning streak and are 6-0 on the road this season. While the Lions have scored points by the dozens all season, Campbell's preference for physical football means they're equally capable of grinding out wins with the combination of a ball-control offense and an ascending defense that propelled them to this win. Gibbs finished with 21 carries for 90 yards on a day Goff went 26 of 36 with 269 yards and no touchdowns. And for the third straight week, all against AFC South foes, the Lions had a second-half shutout. “If you can win on the road, you're normally a pretty damn good team,” Campbell said. “And we can win on the road.” The Colts (5-7) found out the hard way by losing their second straight home game and for the fourth time in their past five games. Anthony Richardson had another up-and-down game , going 11 of 28 with 172 yards while rushing 10 times for 61 yards. But it was Indy's inability to finish drives with touchdowns that again cost the team. That flaw was evident right from the start when Richardson took the Colts inside the Lions 5-yard line on the game's first series and settled for a short field goal when they couldn't punch it in. “We've got to take advantage of our opportunities,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “This league comes down to inches, it comes down to yards and you've got to take advantage of those opportunities. We've had issues down in the red zone and you have to look at the tape and clean it up.” Detroit made Indy pay dearly for its offensive miscues. Gibbs' 1-yard TD run on the Lions' second series made it 7-3 early in the second quarter and after Indy settled for another short field goal, Montgomery spun his way across the goal line for a 6-yard TD and a 14-6 lead. Detroit's defense made sure that was all the scoring punch it needed. “Those players, we've been around each other long enough, they've been around each other to know exactly what we're looking for,” Campbell said. “We have an identity about us. We know the critical factors as they pertain to winning, and those guys take that stuff serious.” Gibbs' 5-yard TD run late in the third quarter gave Detroit a 21-6 lead and they closed it out with a 56-yard field goal midway through the fourth. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught six passes for 62 yards for Detroit while Michael Pittman Jr. had six catches for 96 yards for Indy despite leaving briefly in the first half with an injured shoulder. Gibbs' first score extended Detroit's league record to 25 consecutive games with a TD run, including the playoffs. He's also the third Lions player with 1,000 scrimmage yards and 10 TDs in each of his first two pro seasons with Detroit, joining Billy Sims and Barry Sanders. Gibbs and Montgomery have each scored at least one TD in the same game nine times. Lions: Things got ugly during a third-quarter flurry. Receiver-punt returner Kalif Raymond (foot), left tackle Taylor Decker (right leg) and Montgomery (shoulder) all left in quick succession. Raymond and Montgomery did not return. Decker did. CB Carlton Davis II left early in the fourth with what appeared to be a left knee injury. Colts: Indy deactivated left tackle Bernhard Raimann (knee), forcing the Colts to again use three rookie linemen. Receivers Ashton Dulin (ankle) and Josh Downs (shoulder) both left in the second half. Downs returned, Dulin did not. Lions: Host Chicago in its traditional Thanksgiving Day game. Colts: Visit New England next Sunday. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLUAE weekend traffic alert: Road closures, alternative routes and Dubai Metro timings

Miami head coach Mike McDaniel discusses Dolphins 34-15 win over PatriotsBefore the advent of television in India, cricket lovers had to rely on the radio to get the latest news about the action within the stadiums. Ball-by-ball commentary on the radio had its own charm although there were no visuals. Some of the commentators described the action so well that listeners felt that they were watching the proceedings with their eyes. One of the pioneers of cricket commentary on the radio was Ardeshir Furdorji Sohrabji Talyarkhan, a very well known sports journalist of those days. He was famous for his commentary as well as newspaper articles. He belonged to the Parsi community and was popularly known as Bobby Talyarkhan. He was one of the earliest cricket commentators in India. His radio commentaries played an important role in popularising the game among the laymen. Back then hockey was India’s most popular sport because the Indian hockey team was acknowledged as the best in the world. India’s footballers were also hogging the limelight. But the cricketers were losing most matches. However, Talyarkhan’s cricket commentary was so erudite and descriptive that it drew the people towards cricket. His very first commentary was heard in the year 1934 when the Bombay Quadrangular tournaments used to be played between teams made up of players from different religious communities. The teams were named Hindus, Muslims, Parsees and Europeans. Talyarkhan had a superb command of the English language and his vocabulary was extensive. He was never at a loss to describe the players and their actions. But he had a drawback too. He disliked sharing the microphone and did the commentaries all by himself throughout the day. Usually, commentators find it very stressful to do this. Harsha Bhogle once narrated the problems of commentators who had no partners to share the job. “If you felt thirsty, or your throat dried up after speaking non-stop, you would naturally want to take a break and sip some water or tea. Or perhaps you may need to go to the washroom. But if a commentator is all alone, then he cannot leave his seat. Only AFS Talyarkhan was capable of doing it all alone.” Historian, author and cricket fan Ramachandra Guha has written that Talyarkhan brought to cricket broadcasting a rich, fruity voice and a fund of anecdotes. His self-control was superhuman, for he would speak without interruptions. His career with All India Radio ended when AIR insisted on having a team of three commentators to which Talyarkhan disagreed and then he walked out of the commentary box forever. There were several other famous commentators too such as Pearson Surita, Balu Alaganan, and Anant Setalvad who became household names. Parliamentarian and quiz expert Derek O’Brien has written that radio commentary used to compel the listeners to use their imagination. Derek’s favourite commentators were Berry Sarbadhikari, Dicky Rutnagur and Kishore Bhimani. Commentators Balu Alaganan and Anant Setalvad were good cricketers when they were young. Balu Alaganan captained the Tamil Nadu (then called Madras) Ranji trophy side. He led the star-studded team to its maiden Ranji trophy victory in 1955. But apart from commentators, also in the commentary box would be a few ex-players to provide the expert comments. This correspondent remembers one occasion when Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi was the expert. The situation in the match was that India was struggling and the case was hopeless. Defeat was certain for India. But each of the commentators gave their own opinion about what tactics would be best for India to follow. One said all the fielders should be placed on the boundary line, and another talked of bowling only on the leg side. After a while, one commentator turned to Pataudi and asked, “If you were the captain today, what would you have done in this situation?” Pataudi gave him a very brief reply. “I would have prayed to God,” he said. Every time Pataudi was a member of the commentary team, his sense of humour, quick repartee, and keen observations made listening to radio commentaries a wonderfully enriching and rewarding experience.

Taoiseach Simon Harris has insisted he is not aware that any member of his team tried to get RTE to take down a viral social media clip of a much-criticised encounter with a disability care worker. The Fine Gael leader was asked about the controversy in the first question posed during the second and final TV leaders’ debate of Ireland’s General Election campaign. Mr Harris apologised over the weekend for his handling of the discussion with Charlotte Fallon while canvassing in Kanturk in Co Cork on Friday evening. The Taoiseach was accused of dismissing concerns that Ms Fallon raised about Government support for the disability sector during the exchange filmed by RTE in a supermarket. Mr Harris rang Ms Fallon on Saturday and said he unreservedly apologised for the way he treated her, however focus has since shifted to Fine Gael’s interactions with the national broadcaster about the social media video. At the outset of Tuesday’s TV debate, co-host Miriam O’Callaghan directly asked the Fine Gael leader whether a member of his party contacted RTE to ask for the clip to be taken down. “I have no knowledge of that whatsoever, because this clip was entirely appropriate,” said Mr Harris. “It was a very important moment on the campaign. “And RTE and indeed many media outlets have been with me throughout the campaign, covering many interactions that I’ve had with many, many people right across this country.” The Taoiseach said the approach by his team member was part of the “normal contact that happens between party politics and broadcasters on a daily basis”. Mr Harris’s partner-in-government in the last coalition, Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, said he was not aware of the approach to RTE by Fine Gael. “I didn’t realise this had happened,” he said. “I think Simon has given his explanation to it. I’m not sure it’s as normal or as usual. I just get on with it every day. But, again, I think, you know, I’m not au fait with the details behind all of this, or the background to it. “The video didn’t come down, and it was seen by many, many people. “And I think it illustrates that out there, there are a lot of people suffering in our society. “Notwithstanding the progress we’ve made as a country, a lot of people are facing a lot of individual challenges, and our job as public representatives and as leaders in travelling the country is to listen to people, hear their cases, to understand the challenges that they are going through in their lives. “And when we go about in election campaigns, we have to open up ourselves to criticism and to people calling us to account.” Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald had earlier in the day described reports of the Fine Gael approach to RTE as “chilling”. However, at the start of the debate, she was asked about a media-focused issue related to her own party, namely the controversial manifesto proposal for an independent expert review of RTE’s objectivity in its coverage of the war in Gaza and other international conflicts. Mr Harris previously branded the proposal a “dog whistle to conspiracy theorists” while Mr Martin said it was a “dangerous departure”. Ms McDonald defended the idea during the RTE Prime Time debate on Tuesday. “Politics and politicians should not try to influence editorial decisions or try and have clips taken down because they are inconvenient to them,” she said. “There has to be distance, there has to be objectivity. But I would say I am struck by the very defensive reaction from some to this (the review proposal). “The BBC, for example, a peer review looked at their coverage on migration. Politicians didn’t put their hands on it, and rightly so. “I think in a world where we have to rely on quality information, especially from the national broadcaster, which is in receipt of very substantial public funding, that has to be the gold standard of reliability. I think peer reviews like that are healthy.”

(NASDAQ: BOOM) between May and Nov. 2024 announced by Shareholders FoundationPresident-elect Donald Trump this week voiced support for tens of thousands of unionized dockworkers in a dispute with major shipping companies. Negotiations between workers and management are deadlocked over the companies’ plan for further automation of ports, which the union said would eliminate jobs. “I’ve studied automation, and know just about everything there is to know about it,” Trump said Thursday in a post on Truth Social . “The amount of money saved is nowhere near the distress, hurt, and harm it causes for American Workers, in this case, our Longshoremen.” The vow of support for dockworkers aligns with Trump’s campaign promise to safeguard blue-collar workers threatened by global capitalism, depicting automation as an unwelcome change foisted on workers by foreign-owned shipping firms, some experts said. MORE: Amazon workers authorize strike at company's first-ever unionized warehouse Trump’s rejection of automation highlights a tension found in his economic policy, however, some experts added. Like tariffs, the policy aims to protect a narrow set of workers at the possible expense of importers and consumers, who could suffer higher costs as a result of a missed opportunity to improve the supply chain, some experts said. While others defended Trump’s attempt to protect dockworkers from technological change. The Trump transition team did not respond to ABC News' request for comment. Here’s what to know about the labor dispute over automation at East and Gulf Coast docks, and what it says about how Trump may approach the economy in his second term. Dockworkers and freight companies feud over automation A strike in October at docks across the East and Gulf coasts threatened to upend the economy and drive up prices, but workers and management ended the stoppage with a tentative agreement after three days. The deal includes a 62% wage increase over the life of the six-year contract, but the two sides have yet to finalize it due to a disagreement over plans for further automation. The standoff centers on the potential installation of cranes that would facilitate the retrieval and storage of freight containers, said John McCown, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for Maritime Strategy who closely tracks the shipping industry. Cranes already help remove containers from a ship and place it in a nearby port terminal, but shipping companies have sought the use of additional automated cranes once goods have reached land, McCown said. The cranes work like an old-fashioned juke box, he added. “You hit a number and it goes to pick a record and play a record,” McCown said, noting the cranes would similarly mechanize sorting and transport of containers. The U.S. Maritime Alliance, or USMX, the organization representing shipping firms in negotiations, said on Thursday that such automation would improve efficiency and increase capacity. Those enhancements would benefit U.S. companies and consumers that depend on goods from abroad, the group added. “We need modern technology that is proven to improve worker safety, boost port efficiency, increase port capacity, and strengthen our supply chains,” USMX said in a statement. The USMX did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment. The plans have drawn rebuke from the International Longshoremen’s Association, or ILA, the union representing dockworkers. The union has pointed to massive profits enjoyed by the shipping firms during the pandemic, saying further automation would invest those gains in job-cutting machinery rather than increased compensation. Workers have also disputed the supposed productivity benefits of the technology. “This isn’t about safety or productivity -- it’s about job elimination,” ILA President Dennis Daggett, said in a statement earlier this month. The union has proven that the automated cranes at issue “are not more productive than traditional equipment operated by human workers,” Daggett added. In response to ABC News' request for comment, the ILA shared a statement from Daggett praising Trump. "Throughout my career, I’ve never seen a politician -- let alone the President of the United States -- truly understand the importance of the work our members do every single day," Daggett said. What could Trump’s approach to the standoff mean for his 2nd term? In his social media post backing the workers and opposing port automation, Trump criticized foreign-owned shipping firms for what he described as penny pinching. “For the great privilege of accessing our markets, these foreign companies should hire our incredible American Workers, instead of laying them off, and sending those profits back to foreign countries,” Trump said . “It is time to put AMERICA FIRST!” The framework presents U.S. workers as victims of foreign companies, which he says aim to make use of America’s economic resources at the expense of its citizens. As such, Trump’s intervention in this case favors the ILA in its longstanding fight against automation, Peter Cole, a professor at Western Illinois University who studies the history of dockworkers, told ABC News. “The ILA will really benefit if in fact Trump pushes employers to back off automation,” Cole said, noting that the explanation offered up by Trump reflects a larger political shift in the U.S. against unrestricted global trade. “Presidents in both main parties have supported more manufacturing domestically,” Cole said. MORE: Trump's proposed tariffs would raise prices for these products, experts say However, Trump’s opposition to automation risks imposing higher costs on consumers and even some domestic manufacturers, since advances in productivity would help lower supply costs otherwise passed along to buyers at the end of the chain, some experts said. Trump mistakenly claims that foreign shipping companies would bear the cost of forgone automation, just as he inaccurately says that foreign countries would pay the cost of tariffs, David Autor, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who specializes in technological change and the labor force, told ABC News. “The assertion that raising tariffs at our ports will force foreigners to cover these costs is beyond naive,” Autor said. “It’s simply false. Autor said the hardship that dockworkers would face if automation were to advance and put many of them out of work. “It will not be good for the livelihoods of longshoremen and we should not pretend otherwise,” Autor said, adding that the workers should receive compensation or other protections under such circumstances.

Spurs travel to Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday reeling from a disappointing home loss to Ipswich before the international break. The club’s problems have multiplied during the past fortnight with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur handed a seven-match domestic ban on Monday and Cristian Romero (toe) joining a lengthy list of absentees. However, Postecoglou remains bullish about Tottenham’s progress and acutely aware of the scrutiny set to come his way if they stay 10th. “Christmas is a joyous occasion, irrespective, and I think it should be celebrated. If we’re still 10th then people won’t be happy, I won’t be happy, but we might not be 10th,” Postecoglou pointed out before nine games in 30 days. “Certainly for us I think it’s a significant period because you look at those games and we’ve got the league where we’ve got to improve our position and a couple of important European fixtures that can set us up for the back half of the year, also a Carabao Cup quarter-final. “At the end of that period we could be in a decent position for a strong second half of the year, so for us it is an important period. “You know there’s no more international breaks, so the full focus is here. You can build some momentum through that, or if things don’t go well you could get yourself into a bit of a grind. “Of course if we had beaten Ipswich, we’d be third and I reckon this press conference would be much different wouldn’t it? “I’m not going to let my life be dictated by one result, I’m sorry. I take a wider perspective on these things because I know how fickle it can be, but we need to address our position for sure. “And if we’re 10th at Christmas, yeah it won’t be great. There’d be a lot of scrutiny and probably a lot of scrutiny around me, which is fair enough, but that’s not where I plan for us to be.” Tottenham’s immediate efforts to move up the table will require them ending City’s two-year unbeaten home run in the Premier League. The champions have lost their last four matches in all competitions, but have some key personnel back for Saturday’s clash and will aim to toast Pep Guardiola’s new contract with a victory. Postecoglou was pleased to see Guardiola commit to a further two seasons in England, adding: “I love the fact that there’s a massive target out there that can seem insurmountable. “I look at it the other way. I go, ‘imagine if you knock him off, that’d be something’. “I’m at the stage of my life where I’d rather have the chance of knocking him off than missing that opportunity. “When greatness is around, you want to be around it. And hopefully it challenges you to be like that as well.” Saturday’s fixture will be Postecoglou’s 50th league game in charge of Spurs and he knows what is required to bring up three figures. “No European football, significant player turnover, change of playing style. Where did I think we’d be after 50 games? God knows. “It could have been a whole lot worse, but when you look at it in the current prism of we’re 10th, you’re going ‘it doesn’t look good’ and I understand that and we have to improve that. “But over the 50 games, I think there’s enough there that shows we are progressing as a team and we are developing into the team we want. “The key is the next 50 games, if they can be in totality better than the first 50? First, that means I’m here but second, I think we’ll be in a good space.”Black Friday is one of the most eagerly awaited retail events worldwide. It is marked by large discounts and offers to attract customers to shops and websites. The period has seen the increased use of flash sales, which are time-bound to increase sales and urgency. Despite the numerous advantages associated with flash sales, the technique is not without its drawbacks. One of the reasons why flash sales are now standard on Black Friday is because they create an urgent situation. Flash sales are set up to provide consumers with huge discounts for only a short period and usually with limited stock available. This sets up an environment where consumers feel that they must act fast or they might miss out. Studies show that 68% of shoppers will rush to make impulsive buys during flash sales, hence increasing sales. Flash sales are highly effective tools for retailers to create a sense of urgency and excitement as they look to increase revenue in the short term. Besides urgency, flash sales attract new customers. As per the data, 55% of consumers say that they would be more likely to test a new brand or try a new product if placed in a flash sale, which is a unique opportunity to reach new audiences who may never have considered the products outside of the flash sale. Such customers once they experience value in the product at a given discount can lead to lasting loyalty. The buying decision also becomes easy for the consumers because of flash sales. It removes noise from the communication process; thus, the shoppers will have less of a problem with decision-making. Flash sales help in more conversion rates since the decisions become straightforward, thus making the sales of businesses better. From a revenue perspective, flash sales are a very potent tool. The sale impulsive can drive even more sales volume, particularly if the promotion is enough. Many items sell out pretty fast on Black Friday flash sales due to its high demand and thus most retailers experience increased revenues during these sales. While the advantages of flash sales are evident, there are some downsides that retailers and consumers should consider. One of the primary challenges is customer disappointment. With flash sales, limited stock is a common issue. When customers rush to buy a discounted item only to find that it's out of stock , frustration sets in. Studies reflect that 40% of customers who miss out on flash sales feel disgruntled, causing a red flag concerning the brand's reputation. Customer frustration may lead to negative word-of-mouth, which could reject further business with the company. Another disadvantage is the chance of stockouts. Flash sales tend to create a high demand for discounted goods, and in case their inventory levels are not well-controlled, retailers can get out of stock. It will not only cause a short-term sale loss but may also trigger long-term loss because customers will go to competing stores or websites and therefore lose loyalty to that particular brand. Flash sales also increase the return rates. The nature of these flash sales is impulsive for some customers, who could end up buying items not needed or wanted, which would increase product returns on retailers and add costs to those retailers in terms of reordering, processing returns, and lost revenue. Controlling this return rate is critical, especially at deep discounts to maintain profitability. Moreover, all-flash sales do not have the real discounts they seem to promise. Some retailers inflate prices ahead of the sale to make the discount appear larger. This strategy may create mistrust among the consumers, especially when the "deal" does not look as good as it seemed. Flash sales can thus turn into a double-edged sword if consumers feel that prices are inflated or offers are misleading. In managing the risks and making the best out of flash sales, there is a need for proper inventory management on the side of retailers. Communication with customers on the available stock would minimize disappointments that may come their way when the same product goes out of stock. Where the business item sells out, it is possible to substitute with a similar alternative or communicate the possibility of restocking. Investing in robust e-commerce infrastructure is also critical. High demand during flash sales can lead to slow website loading times or crashes, negatively impacting the shopping experience. Retailers should invest in servers capable of handling high traffic and implement queuing systems to manage the flow of customers effectively. A smooth shopping experience is crucial to retaining customers and avoiding frustration. Additionally, data-driven insights can help businesses optimize future flash sales. With such analysis, retailers can learn peak buying times and the most popular products among consumers. Thus, flash sales can be customized to meet better demand. The above data will ensure that there are sufficient inventory and sales strategies that are well-aligned with customer preferences. While Black Friday is the peak of flash sales, it should not be the sole time retailers use this tool. Flash sales can become a year-round tool for attracting customers, clearing inventory, or increasing website traffic. Research shows that consumers enjoy periodical flash sales throughout the year. As per the record, 58% of shoppers say that they enjoy exclusive deals at different times. Flash sales also owe much to the use of social media. The excitement and exclusivity of flash sales are such that they are ideal to share across social media channels. Using this buzz, the company can gain more brand value, as the social media mentions for flash sales increase by 45% during peak hours. Further, businesses can also extend their reach through joining the conversation and responding to the queries of the customers. Ethical considerations are coming to the forefront in flash sales. With the increasing emphasis on sustainability and responsible consumption, there is a need for retailers to think about the ecological impact of their promotions. One can, for instance, increase the sale of eco-friendly products or offer sustainable shipping services, which will appeal to conscious consumers and enhance the brand reputation. Flash sales on Black Friday present retailers and consumers with a gamut of opportunities and challenges. These flash sales are short-term promotions that drive sales, attract new customers, and bring more visibility to a brand. However, these flash sales also pose risks in the form of stockouts, customer dissatisfaction, and higher return rates. For businesses, managing inventory effectively, clear communication, and a seamless online experience are key to navigating such challenges. With careful planning and strategic execution, flash sales can become a powerful tool for success during Black Friday and beyond. From their time together at the 2024 Paris Olympics to their partnership on NBC’s “The Voice,” hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg and Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles have become quite the team. Fans were initially puzzled when Biles as announced as Snoop’s guest advisor on “The Voice” given she has no experience with music or signing; however, he said Biles’ presence on the show wasn’t about teaching his artists about something they already know how to do but rather teach them how to handle things that may be foreign to them. “We were able to riff off each other and give the artists the best insight going into the next round,” Biles told The Associated Press . “It was pretty easy, simple. We’re both very mellow. But if we need to bring that energy up, then we can. For us, it was about instilling confidence going into the next week.” At the Olympics, Biles and Snoop captivated viewers with their chemistry. The award-winning recording artist was even seen dancing from the stands during Biles and Jordan Chiles’ gymnastics routines during the qualifying rounds. Snoop also went viral on social media after gifting Biles’ dad Ronald a Death Row Records necklace as a 75th birthday gift. During a recent interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Snoop Dogg revealed a deal he made with Biles in which he’ll let her use his song “Drop It Like It’s Hot” to choreograph one of her gymnastics routines under one condition. “I’ll let her use the song, if she teaches me how do to one flip,” Snoop said . “It doesn’t have to be back, it can be a front flip.” James Lang-Imagn Images Biles seemed to be on-board for the collaboration and more than willing to teach Snoop a little gymnastics in the process. While Snoop has quite an extensive athletic resume for a hip-hip artist — he participated in an exhibition 200-meter race during the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon, he’s participated in an Olympic judo event and swam with Michael Phelps at the Olympics — he’s never dipped into the gymnastics arena.

NoneAMMAN, Jordan — President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced Israel and Lebanon have reached a ceasefire agreement meant to pause fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. The 14-month conflict has left more than 3,000 people dead. “Effective 4 a.m. tomorrow local time the fighting across the Lebanese-Israeli border will end. Will end,” Biden said from the White House. “This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. I applaud the courageous leaders of Lebanon and Israel end the violence.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier Tuesday he had recommended that this government approve the agreement. Though the deal does not involve the separate conflict in Gaza Strip, Biden administration officials said they hoped it would lead to an agreement to end fighting there, too. Even as the deal was finalized, Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon, striking areas in the country’s southern and eastern regions, along with the suburbs of the capital — areas where Hezbollah holds sway. Several airstrikes also hit the heart of Beirut, killing at least 10 people, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. In a televised address on Tuesday evening local time, Netanyahu said he would present the outline of the proposal to the government, pushing his ministers to accept the move despite reservations from far-right leaders who are integral members of his coalition. “The length of the ceasefire will depend on what happens in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said. He added that Israel would maintain freedom to act against violations. “If Hezbollah breaks the agreement and seeks to arm itself, we will attack,” he said. The agreement would not immediately affect the fighting in Gaza Strip with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Netanyahu pushed his ministers to accept the agreement, arguing it would allow Israel to focus its attention on the threat from Iran, give Israeli troops an opportunity to replenish their stocks and isolate Hamas. The agreement will initiate a 60-day truce that would see both sides withdraw: Israeli troops out of south Lebanon to Israeli territory, and Hezbollah to areas north of the Litani River, some 18 miles north of the Lebanese-Israeli border. During the truce, a monitoring mechanism would be established that would ensure Hezbollah is not able to reconstitute itself or wage attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon. A U.S.-led committee would oversee implementation of the withdrawal. Lebanese officials say some 5,000 soldiers from Lebanon’s army — which has remained neutral during the conflict — would then enter south Lebanon, along with U.N. peacekeeping forces. Lebanon’s caretaker government is set to meet Wednesday morning to discuss the proposal; it is widely expected to be approved. Despite the optimism, many elements of the ceasefire proposal — which came about after vigorous negotiations brokered by the U.S. and France — remain unclear. One of the larger sticking points is whether Israel would be able to continue striking Hezbollah throughout Lebanon if the group attempts to reestablish a presence south of the Litani River, or if it continues to wage attacks on Israel or smuggle weapons. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told the U.N.’s Lebanon envoy Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert on Tuesday that Israel would act “forcefully” against any breach of the ceasefire agreement. “If you do not act, we will do it, forcefully,” Katz said in a statement. “Any house rebuilt in south Lebanon and used as a terrorist base will be destroyed, any rearming or terrorist organization will be attacked, any attempt at transferring arms will be foiled, and any threat against our forces or our citizens will be immediately eliminated.” Lebanese leaders have dismissed such an agreement as an unacceptable breach of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The ceasefire would officially be an agreement between Israel and Lebanon. It includes a Lebanese lawmaker who has been negotiating on Hezbollah’s behalf. But Hezbollah, a paramilitary faction and political party which is backed by Iran, is not officially a party to the agreement. Another question is the fate of Hezbollah’s weapons. Before the war, the group was considered one of the world’s premier paramilitary factions, with an arsenal more powerful than that of the Lebanese army. The ceasefire agreement, which is based on a U.N. resolution that established a ceasefire in the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, has provisions that would force the group to surrender its arms. A ceasefire would end a 13-month conflict that began a day after Hamas attacked southern Israel, when Hezbollah initiated a rocket campaign in northern Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In the months of tit-for-tat strikes that followed, some 60,000 people from northern Israel and approximately 100,000 Lebanese from southern Lebanon were displaced. In September, Israel escalated its attacks, conducting thousands of airstrikes on Hezbollah-dominated parts of the country and starting an invasion that saw Israeli troops enter southern Lebanon for the first time since 2006. It also assassinated Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah . Since Oct. 8, 2023, more than 3,823 people have been killed in Lebanon and 15,859 injured, according to Lebanese government data, the majority of them in the last two months. More than 25% of those killed were women and children, according to the government data, which do not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Meanwhile, some 1.2 million people — almost a quarter of Lebanon’s population — have been displaced, with wide swaths of the country destroyed. The Israeli government said on Tuesday that 78 Israelis have been killed in attacks by Hezbollah and its allies, including 47 civilians. Even as senior Israeli ministers were meeting at Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv, Israeli warplanes launched some 180 airstrikes across the country, according to a statement from Israel’s military. It issued evacuation warnings for some cities. The military said it was targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure, including the group’s financial arm. Among the targets were four neighborhoods of central Beirut with which had previously been spared from the fighting. One raid hit Hamra, a popular shopping district in the capital which in recent months has become a sanctuary for hundreds of thousands displaced from the Dahieh, the constellation of suburbs south of Beirut where many of Hezbollah’s offices are headquartered. The Dahieh too was pounded by an intense barrage of more than 20 airstrikes, leaving the area obscured by a curtain of smoke and rocking buildings in adjacent neighborhoods. “The hysterical Israeli aggression this evening on Beirut and various Lebanese regions, which specifically targets civilians, confirms once again that the Israeli enemy does not respect any law or consideration,” said Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in a statement on Tuesday. He called on the international community “to act quickly to stop this aggression and implement an immediate ceasefire.” Meanwhile, Hezbollah continued its barrage against northern Israel, lobbing dozens of projectiles across the border. ©2024 Los Angeles Times. When he stopped drinking in 2022, he turned to food. He put on 95 pounds. Recommended Videos His doctor recommended he try Wegovy, part of a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, to help him lose weight. Eventually he switched to a different drug called Zepbound, which targets both GLP-1 and GIP agonists. The drugs worked. But a funny thing happened on his weight-loss journey: His cravings for food had diminished but so had his cravings for drugs and alcohol. Christensen, 42, started drinking at age 9 and using heroin at 17. For decades, catching a cold meant reaching for a hot toddy. Work stress meant numbing out with Xanax. Even passing through certain neighborhoods in Chicago where he used to buy drugs would lead to cravings. But after he started taking GLP-1 agonists, those triggers became, well, less triggering. “It was the weirdest thing,” he said. “It was just quiet. I just found it really easy all of a sudden.” More than that, Christensen noticed that an unease he had always felt in his body – a discomfort he perpetually tried to quell with fidgeting, food or drugs – was diminishing. “That’s a feeling that I’ve had my entire life,” he said. “Taking these drugs has toned that down. “There’s no silver bullet for addiction or mental illness, but for me, in concert with the other treatments, it has been an absolute game changer,” he said. GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic and Wegovy have received lots of attention for their efficacy at promoting weight loss, reducing “food noise” and treating diabetes. But a new crop of evidence – both anecdotal and research based – is pointing to these drugs as a potential option for people facing addiction issues. RECOMMENDED VIDEO The operative word here is “potential.” “We have something there that holds great promise but that is not proven yet,” said Luba Yammine, an associate professor in the department of psychology at UTHealth Houston who researches treatments for substance use disorders. Yammine conducted a study on the efficacy of a GLP-1 drug called exenatide as a tool to help quit smoking. The results were promising, so her team is currently conducting larger clinical trials using GLP-1 agonists in the context of smoking cessation. But she’s saving her celebrations until these studies are completed, which will take another two to three years. “As excited as we are, it is too early to make conclusions,” Yammine said. In November, Silvia Martinelli, a medical doctor specializing in psychiatry in the department of life sciences and public health at Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, published a systematic review of randomized trials related to GLP-1 drugs that suggested they could treat substance use disorders. Martinelli also collaborated with Niccolò Petrucciani, a medical doctor and associate professor of general surgery at Sapienza University in Rome, on a meta-study published in March that found 4.28 percent of people who received bariatric surgery developed new-onset substance use disorder. That is, a “non-negligible” number of people who got weight loss surgery ended up developing addictions to substances like opioids or alcohol. Her research might point to a neurological connection between overeating and substance abuse. “Certainly our understanding of neurohormonal mechanisms to date is still limited,” Martinelli wrote in an email to The Washington Post. “Medical physiology has only recently deepened the close connection that exists between our brain and the gastro-intestinal system.” Markku Lähteenvuo, a clinical scientist in Kuopio, Finland, recently published a study of 227,000 Swedish patients with alcohol use disorder that found GLP-1 drugs were associated with a 30 to 40 percent reduction in hospitalizations and other problems related to alcohol use. Why would these drugs help with addictions to alcohol and drugs? “I really don’t think we know yet,” Lähteenvuo said, though he noted that some primate studies have pointed to GLP-1 drugs affecting dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a hormone and neurotransmitter linked to generating pleasure in the brain, and its effects have been connected to cocaine, alcohol and even social media use (although some researchers have warned that the effects of scrolling on dopamine are often misunderstood). Many researchers agree that if GLP-1 drugs do prove effective in treating addiction, it is probably because of dopamine, although absent further research, this is still hypothetical. “Chances are there is more than one mechanism and these mechanisms may not be mutually exclusive,” Yammine said. Lähteenvuo agrees. “But I have to say, I am quite enthusiastic,” he said. Lähteenvuo is hopeful that GLP-1 drugs could help treat both obesity and addiction, two of the most common medical conditions in the Western world. “I think it might be a nice way to get two birds with one stone, treating multiple problems with a single medication, which is always good if we can manage it,” he said. Brandi Moore, an accountant from Pittsburgh, said that for her, taking GLP-1 drugs has killed more than two proverbial birds. “Like all addicts, we have a voice and that voice wants to kill us,” Moore said. She described that internal “voice” as driving her to cocaine addiction, food addiction and negative self talk. “That voice is gone,” said Moore, 49. “It’s the first time I’ve felt peace from that. And it’s incredible.” Sitting in her work cubicle, Moore pulled out a photo from her wedding day to illustrate how much weight she had lost. “My thigh is smaller than my arm was there,” she said. In 2017, Moore underwent weight-loss surgery. She went from 287 pounds to 179 pounds, but then found herself unable to lose more weight. Moore started taking semaglutide in March after her doctor recommended a Groupon for a telehealth site. In her words, her weight “plummeted” to 135 pounds. She also experienced “terrible” constipation and had to adjust her ADHD medications, which she has taken since 1999, after a dip in their efficacy. She also found herself feeling numb and listless when she first started taking semaglutide. But after adjusting her dosages, Moore hit her stride and has no plans to stop using GLP-1 drugs or prescription ADHD medication. Now, she said, she’s never felt calmer or more centered. “That part of my personality that’s being chemically controlled, I want to control it,” she said. “So it kind of put power back in my hands” – a power she wished she had access to years ago when her cocaine addiction led to problems with the law. Taking GLP-1 agonists also inspired Moore to pursue other ways to take care of her mental health. “I’ve gotten into therapy because I’m afraid of the voice coming back,” she said. She’s also taken up meditation. Stories like these are compelling. Maybe too compelling? Yammine cautioned that no drug – from GLP-1 agonists to aspirin – works for everyone. Every individual experiences the effects and side effects of a drug differently. Regarding off-label use of GLP-1 agonists to treat addiction, Yammine thinks that it’s too early. “We should wait for the results of rigorous clinical trials to establish that these medications are efficacious, safe and acceptable to people with alcohol and substance use disorders,” she wrote via email. But Christensen doesn’t plan on stopping his GLP-1 prescription, even though the long-term effects are unknown and the drugs are pricey. “I’m a little privileged in that I can afford it, even though it’s a lot cheaper than it used to be,” he said. “I work on the South Side of Chicago and a lot of people down there are struggling with much more basic things. A $300 a month prescription is just not on the agenda.” But Christensen has done a cost-benefit analysis, and it’s worth it to keep taking the drug, maybe for the rest of his life. “It doesn’t just make me feel good,” he said. “My finances are better, my marriage is stable, my house is clean.” Doing dishes or cooking a meal used to be arduous, sometimes impossible. Now, Christensen has enough clarity and peace of mind to keep fresh flowers in his apartment. “There’s these little details of life that I would not give up for the world,” he said. “It’s not directly because of these drugs, but they play a major part in me being able to live a life that I find productive and satisfying.”

Sukhu noted that the BJP is split into five different factions, each guided by prominent leaders like J P Nadda, Anurag Thakur, and others, which he believes is causing significant disunity in the party. He further lamented what he called the opposition's personal attacks against him, rather than engaging in constructive, policy-based criticism. Sukhu also took the opportunity to praise Congress for election successes, particularly Priyanka Gandhi's landmark victory in Wayanad. (With inputs from agencies.)
