Two Capital High students have been arrested on suspicion of appearing in a social media video showing one student holding a firearm in a school bathroom. The Santa Fe Police Department received a call about the video Tuesday, prompting Santa Fe Public Schools to lock down Capital High, police said in a news release. Officers then conducted a sweep of the school in search of students involved. Leonardo Lemus Chavez and Yonathan Gonzalez-Gonzalez, both 16, were identified as the teens tied to the video, Chavez as the one holding the gun and Gonzalez as the one recording, the news release states. Detectives found the boys at their homes, where they took them into custody. Officers recovered a Glock 43 handgun with an extended magazine from Gonzalez's home, according to the news release. Both students are charged with unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises, a fourth-degree felony, in addition to petty misdemeanors of unlawful carrying of a handgun, and unlawful bomb scares and shooting threats. Attorney General Raúl Torrez has unsuccessfully attempted to elevate the threat charge to a fourth-degree felony to combat school threats. Gonzalez and Chavez were booked into the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center. “The Santa Fe Police Department takes these types of school threats seriously and will investigate all threats on social media regarding the safety of the children in this community,” the news release states. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered repeated blows in court in its effort to get potentially favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania’s highest court dealt him a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. But he offered up Thursday that he changed some of the language he was using after getting pushback from an Indian diplomat that some of his comments could sound like he was endorsing ideas of Sikh nationalism. Brown, who was a candidate for the leadership in 2022, was summoned to a House of Commons committee Thursday to answer questions on the 2022 race after a report from a committee on national security referred to allegations of Indian interference in an unspecified Conservative leadership campaign. “I don’t believe foreign intervention affected the final outcome of the Conservative leadership race,” Brown told the House of Commons public safety and national security committee Thursday. A CBC/Radio-Canada article this week quoted several confidential sources from Brown’s campaign alleging that representatives from India’s consulate interfered to undermine his leadership bid. On Monday, Brown posted on social media about the committee’s summons to say that he had no new evidence to add, and that the public inquiry on foreign interference was the proper venue to evaluate the allegations. Brown insisted to the committee Thursday that no members of the Indian government reached out to him or his campaign workers during his leadership bid, saying the relationship was “already very strained” at that point. The CBC News story also contained allegations that his national campaign co-chair Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner was pressured to withdraw her support for Brown — something she denied. When NDP MP Alistair MacGregor quizzed him on the news report, asking why she left the campaign, Brown said she left seeking to launch her own leadership bid to replace UCP leader Jason Kenney in Alberta — not from pressure from India. “At no time when we talked about her departing the campaign did she ever say it was over pressure from the consul general,” he said. He said the article likely referred to a conference call more than a month before she left, after the consul general raised concerns with Rempel Garner about Brown using the words “Sikh nation.” “The consul general had expressed directly to (Rempel Garner) that, obviously that was something they didn’t agree with, that it could be viewed in nationalistic terms towards the Sikh community,” he said. That led him to change the language he was employing to a Punjabi term that he said meant the same thing. Liberal MP Jennifer O’Connell asked if that’s “an appropriate election activity by a foreign government,” charging it was a clear instance of foreign interference. Brown replied that Indian officials “have been more robust in their opinions than some of us would be comfortable with.” A bombshell report by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians into foreign interference released last spring referred to “India’s alleged interference in a Conservative Party of Canada leadership race.” Brown said he was not under any kind of non-disclosure agreement with the Conservative Party that prevents him from speaking publicly about what happened during the race. He said he believes it’s important to guard against foreign meddling in democracy but that he does not want to get drawn into partisan debates on Parliament Hill. Brown was not included as a witness in the public inquiry into foreign interference, which wrapped up hearings earlier this fall with a final report due in the new year. He was disqualified from the party’s 2022 leadership race due to allegations related to financing rules in the Canada Elections Act. The boys were captivated by the ideas of “doing a good turn daily.” After the first troop was organized, other town boys were motivated to join. It was an opportunity to put the “gang spirit to work for good.” In a very short time the troop had the full quantity of 32 members. Soon a second troop was organized. Meetings of Keyser Troop #1 were held in the Mystic Chain Hall on North Main Street. Boys learned the principles of scouting, the oath, motto, and about the flag, but also about the obligation or joy and importance of service to other people. Two years later, the Presbyterian minister took over the troop. He set the groundwork for a three-day camping trip in 1912 along the old covered bridge across Patterson Creek in Burlington. The campers loaded all their camping equipment, which was very limited, on a merchant’s wagon pulled by a horse. Before getting to camp, all the boys pushed to help the overloaded horse up the hills enroute from Keyser to Burlington. There were no cabins, merely tents of all sizes and shapes. Everyone slept on the ground. These summer camps offered a variety of practical classes including swimming, water rescue or life guard badges as well as first aid. The boys also learned to assist with crowd and traffic control. Details of a memorable camp incident more than 100 years ago has been noted. A scout baseball game was interrupted by an unusual hail storm. Hail the size of walnuts destroyed the boys’ tents along Patterson Creek. The scouts were forced to shelter in the Old Homestead Hotel that night. The next day they caught the TM&P railroad back to Keyser. During the 1918 influenza era, Troops One and Two became emergency Red Cross units. They helped establish an emergency hospital and assisted in its continuous operation by keeping its fires going in the furnace at night. Basically, the boys assisted nurses at the hospital, ran errands of mercy, and delivered medications to homes of infected shut-ins. In June 1923 the scouts assisted with the popular week-long annual cultural event, the Chautauqua lectures, concerts and entertainers that came to Keyser. In fact, boy scouts knocked on doors in Keyser assisting with selling tickets, setting up tents, ushering spectators to their seats and keeping the grounds clean and neat during the Chautauqua activities. On an August 1924 camping trip the troop with scoutmaster Paul Hardy participated for the second year at the farm of the Stump family along the South Branch of the Potomac. There was a strict schedule for the boys, with requirements such as arising and leaving their tents at 6:10 a.m. for the flag salute and calisthenics before a morning swim at half past six and breakfast at 7 a.m. During the morning following inspections of the tents, policy training before scout instructions and schooling began at 9 a.m. Life saving drills followed at 11. After lunch at noon, game time, hiking and various contests were scheduled before swimming and water sports. After the evening meal, the day ended with campfires at 7:30 p.m., more games, stunts and stories entertained the troop.
