I recently asked readers of this column if they could recommend nurseries that more of us should know about. In response, Peggy Neiman suggested I visit the San Gabriel Nursery & Florist in San Gabriel, “The employees are delightful and knowledgeable with a wonderful variety of plants and flowers,” she wrote, noting the nursery’s “very interesting history.” The story is indeed interesting, and I’m going to share a summary of that history here that I got from the nursery’s website, but you can read it in full at sgnursery.com . Before doing so, I should mention that I have visited this nursery and can testify to its vast selection of fruit trees, roses and ornamental plants that’s second to none. If you are looking for cut flowers, this is also the place to go since they have a wide selection of exotic flora from which to choose. Garden accessories are also available in generous supply. Unfortunately, San Gabriel is in the citrus quarantine zone so you will have to look elsewhere for these trees. The story of today’s San Gabriel Nursery & Florist begins in 1917, with the arrival by boat of 21-year-old Fred Yoshimura in San Francisco. He had come to America with the dream of starting a business that would enable him to support his family in Japan. The following year brought Yoshimura to San Gabriel, where he lived in a boarding house while working in the gardens that were being planted in San Marino and Pasadena. The enterprising young gardener took cuttings from the plants and with money saved from his gardening jobs was soon able to rent a piece of land and establish Mission Nursery, from which he could sell nursery stock that developed from his cuttings. At this time, sprinkler systems were being installed for the first time and Yoshimura became an expert in this technology, adding to his skills as a gardening professional. Soon afterward, Yoshimura met Mitoko Naito. At the age of 15, she had come to South Pasadena to work in a home as a domestic helper. In 1924, the two young immigrants were married. At the suggestion of one of their customers, Mrs. Yoshimura became one of the first florists in the area, learning flower-arranging skills from this same customer. As their business grew, so did their family, with the Yoshimuras having two boys and two girls, all of whom would help to expand the thriving family business. By the early 1930s, Mission Nursery had 60 employees and business was booming. In addition to selling plants, the nursery installed irrigation systems, fish ponds, and rock gardens. The nursery also imported stone lanterns and benches from Japan which became quite popular, even hiring a man who had spent time in Japan learning how to craft these special Japanese garden accessories. Fred Yoshimura was proud of his heritage and helped those around him gain a better understanding of his culture. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Nurserymen’s Association. His charitable nature came to the fore in donating truckloads of plants to military bases throughout California. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Fred Yoshimura, along with 120,000 other Japanese Americans, was sent to an internment camp even as his oldest son would be drafted and serve in the United States Army. Once the internment of Japanese Americans began, it was assumed that the nursery would have to be sold. Mrs. Yoshimura was approached by several buyers but rejected their offers which were too low. Finally, Manchester Boddy, publisher of the Los Angeles Daily News, presented a fair offer that was accepted by Mrs. Yoshimura. Not only would Boddy’s offer allow the Yoshimuras to pay off their bank loans, but they would receive monthly payments throughout their internment that made it possible for them to start another nursery business in the future. It should also be noted that while Mrs. Yoshuimura was in the camp, she was hired by the government to run a flower shop. She grew the plants and flowers that were used in floral arrangements for weddings and other events. When the war ended in 1945, the Yoshimuras returned to San Gabriel and established San Gabriel Nursery & Florist across the street from where Mission Nursery stood. That nursery was soon closed when Manchester Boddy took all the inventory to his estate where he started his own nursery business. That estate eventually became Descanso Gardens and visitors there will set their eyes on camellias, azaleas, and Japanese lanterns that were from the stock Boddy acquired when purchasing Mission Nursery from the Yoshimuras. On the nursery’s website, there is a compelling photo of a field of pansies on the San Gabriel Nursery property at that time. In those days, pansies (and other flowers, I am sure) were not purchased in plastic containers. You would go to the nursery and point to the flowers you wanted and they would be dug up for you to take home and transplant into your own garden. It should be noted that Bellefontaine Nursery, in Pasadena, was started in the 1930s by the Uchidas, another Japanese American family. They too were interned during World War II, but with the assistance of friends were able to keep possession of the nursery during the war. You can read the complete history of the nursery and the family behind it at bellefontainenursery.com . California native of the week : Foliage, flowers and hips (fruit) of California wild roses (Rosa californica) are all fragrant and the hips are recommended for making tea. California wild roses will appreciate a bit more moisture than other native plants. While growing in full sun close to the coast, they will benefit from partial shade in hotter, more inland environments. California wild roses make a fine natural barrier because of their nasty thorns that will keep out meandering urban wildlife. Individual plants will grow in a thicket, with each rose bush reaching up to 6 feet tall with a spread of 10 feet. There is a wonderful display of these roses in a planter at the entrance to the Los Angeles Zoo. Related Articles

OPEL CORSA HYBRID Rating ★★★★☆ Price range starts from €25,095 - €31,695 as tested in GS spec Engine a really good hybrid system based on the three-pot petrol engine The Spec pretty incredible when you think what used to be on offer in this segment Verdict class leading qualities in many respects This might come as something of a shock to Gen-Z-ers or Millennials, but there was a time in the not so distant past when cars came with few of the creature comforts and safety features that are taken for granted today. Back in the 1970’s, Toyota made a huge impact on the Irish market by selling versions of the Corolla which – gasp – came as standard with a heater; not only that but – roll of drums – it was also fitted with a radio. Such a situation might seem preposterous in the modern era in which cars come with all sorts of electronic driver aids, safety features that will stop you crashing into pretty much anything; then you’ve got all the telecommunications gizmos, paddle-shift gearboxes, torque sensing differentials and all sorts of computer-aided mechanicals. Back in the day you were haunted if you got an ashtray and a cigarette lighter, both of which are now, of course, consigned to history. I mention all this by way of illustrating the kaleidoscopic specification sheet that now comes with even diminutive cars such as this week’s tester – the new Opel Corsa with a 1.2 petrol engine and mild hybrid technology. Standard kit on this supermini includes a bewilderment of stuff: it has an electronic stability programme and electronic brake distribution, while also boasting automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with an intelligent speed limiter, blind spot assist, hill start assist and lane keep assist. As if that wasn’t enough the entry level model to the Opel range also has a heated steering wheel on which there are controls for the phone/audio/cruise control, electronic climate, control, and door mirrors which are electronically controlled, heated and power folding. Jeez. It used to be the case that you were lucky if you got dust caps on the tyre valves – or hubcaps, for that matter. Nowadays we couldn’t live without our front and rear parking sensors, 180 degree panoramic rear view camera, or the electrochrome anti-dazzle rear view mirror, or the automatic lights or wipers. This latest Corsa is the newest iteration of a car which, on its debut in 2020, got a rare five-star rating in these columns. That was largely down to a relief in this quarter that the Opel brand had been saved from extinction by its purchase by the PSA Peugeot/Citroen group who got it for half nothing from its previous owners, General Motors. Having witnessed the sad demise of such as Saab (another GM failure) pretty much the entire British industry (Rover, Reilly, Hillman, Sunbeam, Morris etc. etc) and a raft of American ones (Plymouth, Fisker, Mercury, Pontiac etc. etc.) we feared Opel would go the same way, but the French outfit came to the rescue in Opel’s case, before being itself subsumed into the newly created Stellantis company. The 2020 Corsa, therefore, gave us reason to cheer and the fact it was an excellent little supermini helped it achieve its five-star status in our eyes. Opel has gone from strength to strength, what with new Astra , Mokka and Grandland model ranges and now this latest Corsa aims to further solidify the brand’s successful re-emergence into the automotive world. And it will. Aside altogether from the cosmetic elements of this new model – it is a fine looking car, by the way – it characterises all the elements that go to make up a serious contender in a market segment that looked for a while like it was going to vanish altogether. With Ford ceasing to make the Fiesta and others looking to make city cars which are EV-only, it looked like there might be a dearth of small five-door cars in the not too distant. But thankfully that will not come to pass as manufacturers have hit the realisation that such things are actually still good for business. The Corsa, then, joins such as the VW Polo , SEAT Ibiza , Skoda Fabia , Peugeot 208 , Citroen C3, Toyota Yaris , Nissan Micra , Hyundai i20 and many more in a competitive marketplace. And it is up there with the best of them. The interior is bright and airy – and roomy too. The GS model we tested has a digital instrument binnacle and there’s a 10” infotainment screen that controls a lot of functions except the climate, which is worked by various dials and buttons. Seating is comfortable and well adjustable and while room in the back might be a bit tight for lanky people, it is good for the segment. The boot too is commodious to a point. On the road it provides a balanced and sturdy proposition and the powertrain design is pretty state-of-the-art hybrid motoring which give you the potential to drive for 50% of the time on electricity only when in urban or low-speed settings. The system is self-charging and the transfer of power from EV to ICE is pretty seamless, although the car is not the quickest (10.7 second 0-100 km/h) in acceleration terms it can most certainly hold its own at motorway speeds and has a good turn of foot for passing manoeuvres. It is economical as well and if you’re modest with the application of your right boot, you should see a return from the three-cylinder engine in the region of 5.0 l/100km (56 mpg), despite there being some 100 bhp on tap. You have the usual choice of Eco, Normal and Sport driving settings to choose from and while the latter probably holds onto any of the six gears on offer with the auto ‘box that’s standard here, it does give you a bit of necessary pep when required. The handling is surefooted and the ride is well capable of dealing with the Irish road network, while the steering is sharp and weights up nicely as you pick up speed. For the class, this is as good as it gets in all three of those departments. Opel, yet again, has done a good job here with the tools at its disposal and I am thrilled that the Russelsheim outfit has found a home where it is treated with due respect and its engineers and designers allowed the freedom to create cars that the public might actually want – unlike its previous owners. While I may have been a little too excited about the Corsa’s revival when we saw and drove it back in 2020, what with that five-star rating, this is still one of the best superminis around and the hybrid choices in the line-up not only give it green credentials and an appeal to the more eco-conscious among us, but make it hugely economic as well. All that considered, it still easily warrants a four-star rating and that’s right up there with the best in class – a class which is now unrecognisable from those cars which first had the ‘supermini’ label attached to them all those years ago.Anze Kopitar rallies Kings past Flyers with late pair
There’s nothing quite like a bowl of hot soup to recharge when you feel worn out or under the weather. While vegetables of all kinds are well-placed in homemade soups, this recipe calls for a blend of greens and powerful Stilton, often known as blue cheese. It’s creamy and thick, unlike most vegetable -based soups, but it’s low in calories, at just 175 calories per serving. Shared in the Fast 800 Easy Recipe book, the formula has several health benefits . “Thanks to the soluble and insoluble fibre in the onion, celery and broccoli, this richly flavoured green soup will give your healthy gut microbes a good boost to help support your immunity”, claimed the book authors, Clare Bailey and Justine Pattison. One tbsp olive oil One large onion peeled and roughly chopped Four celery sticks, trimmed and sliced One chicken or vegetable stock cube 200g broccoli, cut into small florets 100g Stilton A small handful of parsley or chives to serve (optional) Method Add the oil to a large saucepan and turn the heat to medium. Add the onion and celery and fry for five minutes until soft, stirring throughout. Now add the stock; crumble in the cube and add one litre of water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir the soup occasionally as it simmers, then add the broccoli and cook for five more minutes (or until the vegetables are tender). Take the pan off the heat and blitz its contents with a stick blender. If you don’t have one, allow the soup to cool a little and blend in a food processor until smooth. The cheese should be added to the pan at this point, but be sure to save 25g for later. Return the pan to low heat and stir the soup until the Stilton has melted. If the mixture looks a little too thick at this point, you can add a splash of water. Add plenty of ground black pepper for the seasoning, but add the salt sparingly, as the cheese is fairly salty. Stir the seasoning to ensure it flavours all of the soup, then divide the mixture between four warmed bowls and crumble the remaining Stilton. Finish with a sprinkling of fresh, chopped parsley or chives if you have them.As we enter the holiday season many young people are no doubt beginning to consider their future options. With a range of paths to pursue, a high rate of youth unemployment in Canada and a higher education sector facing unprecedented challenges it may seem logical to wonder if university is worth it. In my role as president of York University I see these issues play out every day in the lives of my students and faculty. However, I can say with certainty that, yes, university is worth it for both students and society. And while you might think that I might be biased, there is real data to back it up. Simply put, going to university enriches both students and society over the long term. We must ensure that students and universities are supported to help ensure as broad access as possible. While many students entering the market fresh out of university will make entry-level wages, the reality is that over the longer term their earning potential has more room to expand . Those with a bachelor’s degree earn 24 per cent more than the national average. The more education, the higher the earning potential. Students with a university degree are more likely to have stable employment even amidst economic disruption, as the COVID-19 pandemic revealed . Graduates are also more likely to gain employment that offers a wider range of benefits. Simply put, an education increases one’s chances of finding fulfilling employment and living a longer and healthier life. Beyond individual benefits, there are also key benefits to society. Canada relies disproportionately on universities compared to other OECD countries to drive the research and innovation central to a productive and prosperous economy . Further research has shown that education is central to a healthy, democratic society To quote Nelson Mandela: “ education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world .” The world faces a host of wicked problems ranging from economic inequality to climate change, geopolitical conflict and ongoing wars. Universities and graduates play a key role in addressing these challenges. Technology is not going away and it is not slowing down. A recent study revealed that the jobs of more than 60 per cent of Canadians may be at risk to AI . Moreover, an estimated one out of 10 employees in Canada could be at a high risk of automation-related job redundancy. Canada’s already volatile job market will continue to be impacted. Those with higher levels of education are the best equipped to benefit from technologies in ways that complement the work they do . Graduates are also more likely to have the transferable skills needed to withstand workforce disruption. According to the OECD , AI technologies pose less of a risk for highly-skilled workers. In fact, their jobs are less likely to be replaced by automation because they possess the critical thinking skills needed to provide oversight to tasks that use AI and automation. While these technologies are sophisticated and becoming even more so each day, they currently cannot replicate human cognitive, critical and decision-making skills. There is also compelling research that shows students with higher education are more likely to pursue continuing education to upgrade and reskill, a quality that makes students more agile in a shifting labour market. Universities have also been increasing micro-credentials , programs which help learners re-skill while they are holding employment and balancing familial obligations, to support lifelong learning and build a more resilient Canadian workforce. If Canada is to meet the expanding needs of students and of the country then we must invest now in higher education. Access is something I worry deeply about to ensure that we are not leaving any talent behind. Data from the 2017 National Survey of Engagement indicates that 48 per cent of first- and fourth-year undergrad students at York came from households where neither parent held a bachelor’s degree. What’s more, York’s 2020 Economic and Social Impact Report revealed that 59 per cent of students could not have attended university without financial support. Creating accessible educational opportunities for diverse learners to develop responsive skills is critical for a vibrant future workforce and for resilient communities. York and other universities in Canada have a good track record for this. At the same time, social mobility and productivity have been declining in Canada in recent years . Continuing to ensure that eligible students have access to university education including at the graduate level is imperative to address these trends. The significant numbers of Canadian students leaving the country to study medicine overseas while Canada is facing a significant gap in primary care physicians is just one example . These are troubling trends which Canadian universities are committed to addressing. While the commitment and innovation of universities is evident, the unfortunate truth is that universities across much of Canada have seen a steady decline in real dollar funding for years. In Ontario, recommendations from the government’s blue-ribbon panel strongly advocated for the urgent increase in financial support for universities . To meet the changes in Canada’s labour market, universities have developed new programs to meet the talent needs in areas such as science, technology, engineering and health . We have also worked to enhance access through flexible teaching formats and strengthened international and cross-sector research collaborations to tackle complex societal problems . Universities have also increased supports for students including activities to help them connect with careers and become more entrepreneurial and efficient . In short, universities in Canada are one of the country’s most important assets. If we are to continue delivering the high-quality education for which we are known and serving the needs of the communities who rely on us, especially given fierce global competition for talent, it is essential that we secure a financially sustainable model for universities. Canada’s high youth unemployment has many people anxious about how they will fare in a job market that bears a striking resemblance to the Hunger Games. Expanding employment opportunities is necessary and will require collaboration across all sectors. But the data are clear. A university education will provide our youth with a running start and the ability to adapt as they go. Rhonda Lenton is chair of the Council of Ontario Universities.

The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers have only a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg, a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison. The bypolls held for three assembly seats in Karnataka on November 13 have gone decisively in favour of the ruling Congress , drowning the BJP-JDS alliance and shattering the exit poll predictions forecasting one seat each for the three parties. GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Princely Umanmielen's return to the Swamp ended with a police escort . Umanmielen, who spent three years at Florida before transferring to Ole Miss, left the stadium with a number of officers surrounding him. And the defensive end still tried to get at heckling fans. It started when Umanmielen left the sideline in the waning seconds of a 24-17 loss to the Gators . He was walking toward the visiting locker room when at least one fan yelled at him from the stands. Umanmielen clearly didn't like what he heard and made his way toward the seats. Officers quickly stepped in and escorted Umanmielen back toward the locker room. They then walked him directly to the team's waiting busses, but more fans were in the path and shouted at him again. Umanmielen turned and started toward the fans before officers stepped in and stopped him. It was the latest bit of oddness for Umanmielen, who wore an orange Gators ski mask through Ole Miss' practice facility late in the week. He finished the game with seven tackles, including a sack. Three semiconductor units to be set up in NE will create 80K jobs: HM ShahPlateau Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has assured supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the party’s Governors and critical stakeholders are committed to re-strategising to stabilise the party and restore hope for Nigerians. The Governor gave the assurance during a Gala Night at the Banquet Hall, Government House Rayfield, in Jos, Plateau State, where he hosted the PDP Governors’ Forum for a strategic meeting. He expressed gratitude to the Governors and party faithful who traveled from across the country to “The Home of Peace and Tourism” to support the forum. He emphasised the importance of the gathering in charting a way forward for the PDP and restoring its reputation as the party of choice for Nigerians. “Even though this is primarily a meeting of Governors, it is gratifying to see party leaders and stakeholders from various states filling this room to support the Governors as we strategize to ensure not only the stability of our party but also its ability to continue providing hope to Nigerians,” Mutfwang stated. Governor Mutfwang highlighted Plateau’s historical significance to the PDP, recalling that it hosted the party’s first convention to elect the inaugural President of the Fourth Republic and produced the PDP’s first National Chairman. He proudly referred to Plateau as the “Home of PDP”. He also reflected on the successes of his administration, asserting that peace and trust have been restored to the state following years of challenges. “By the grace of God, after years of miserable leadership by the opposition on the Plateau, the people have welcomed their party back. The PDP and I am determined to improve the lives of our people and fulfill the party’s mandate of social justice and empowerment,” he added. Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, commended the party’s stakeholders for their unwavering support. He emphasized the PDP’s unity and its position as an unbreakable political party offering Nigerians hope and good governance. “We are here on the Plateau, and Governor Mutfwang has shown us that Plateau is indeed a melting pot where everyone is welcome. The PDP remains an indivisible party. Despite minor hiccups, we are united with all organs and leaders of the party. We will continue to work together to provide Nigerians with opportunities for better governance,” Senator Bala Mohammed affirmed. Oyo State Governor and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Seyi Makinde, also reassured PDP supporters of the Governors’ determination to reform the party and restore its leadership role in Nigeria.
