'Unbelievable' Odegaard transforms Arsenal and gets Saka smiling again

Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.inter has already arrived across the nation and it is necessary to have items to protect against the cold weather. That's why here are the items every retiree should have at home to prepare and be ready for this time of year. Cold weather is approaching and it's time to start stocking up on winter supplies. President-elect Donald Trump said Friday he's in favor of eliminating daylight saving time, calling it "inconvenient" and "very costly" as his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) directors also push for action on the matter. "The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn't! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation," Trump posted on Truth Social Friday. While Trump tweeted, "Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me," in 2019, he appears to be changing course now. This comes as his DOGE directors, Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk and Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, have advocated for the time change to be eliminated. "Looks like the people want to abolish the annoying time change," Musk posted in response to a poll on X calling for DST to be abolished. "It's inefficient & easy to change," Ramaswamy responded. Any changes would need to be passed by Congress, and legislation on the issue has been considered before in recent years.Valpoi : Police have arrested two persons in connection with the killing of Samad Khan, 22, who is suspected to have died accidently following a gunshot fired from a weapon used by an accused, during illegal wild boar hunting in the forest of Patwal, in Sattari , on Tuesday night. CLEVELAND — The NBA's leader in assists handed Cleveland a rare loss. Trae Young got a career-high 22 assists — the most in the league this season — as the Atlanta Hawks pulled off a 135-124 upset Thursday night of the Cavaliers, who dropped to 17-2 and lost for the first time in 11 home games this season. One of the game's deepest shooters, Young also made a 39-foot 3-pointer in the final two minutes as the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak and got their second major road win after knocking off the champion Celtics in Boston on Nov. 12. Young's assist total was one better than the 21 recorded by New Orleans guard Elfrid Payton earlier this week against Indiana. It was also just one shy of the Hawks' team record held by Mookie Blaylock, who got 23 assists on March 6, 1993 against Utah. “He threw himself into the game,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said of Young, who came into the game averaging 11.9 assists. "The biggest thing is he just moved the ball, and he forced guys to run. He gave guys opportunities in the open court and he trusted his teammates.” Young picked up eight assists in the fourth quarter as the Hawks outplayed the Cavs down the stretch. Young fed teammate De'Andre Hunter for two baskets, Dyson Daniels for another and made two free throws to put the Hawks up 126-118. Moments later, Young lost the handle and Ty Jerome's 3-pointer pulled the Cavs within 126-122. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young (11) is congratulated by forward Jalen Johnson after the Hawks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 135-124 in an NBA basketball game, Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, in Cleveland. Credit: AP/David Dermer Young nearly gave it away again, but after corralling the loose ball, he drilled his 3-pointer just inside the half-court logo to put Atlanta ahead by seven. “I couldn’t let my team down twice in a row, so I had to make the play,” said Young. "I think when I got the ball back I still had 10 seconds left, so I had a little time to make a play and that’s what happened.” The bucket silenced Cleveland's rocking crowd. And if they needed any reminder, Young reminded them to be quiet by pressing his index finger to his mouth. The Hawks have grown accustomed to Young coming through in the clutch. The three-time All-Star has a knack for big moments, and while his ability to launch 3-pointers is often the focus, his passing game is often overlooked. “For the smallest guy on the floor, he sees it really well,” said Hunter, who finished with 26 points. “He makes on-time passes, usually where guys can shoot it and we made a lot of shots tonight.” Snyder said Young's leadership late in the game was as vital as anything. “I really liked the way we and he reacted to being down,” Snyder said. "Just keeping his poise, that’s always been a point of emphasis with Trae.” Following the game, Young came into the media room cradling a basketball as if he was protecting it on a drive. As he wrapped up his availability, Young was asked if he knew he had just set a career-best in assists. “I didn't until just now. Thank you," he said.

AP News Summary at 2:48 p.m. ESTUS President Joe Biden leaves after delivering remarks at the White House on Nov 26. WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden’s administration is preparing a US$725 million (S$973 million) weapons package for Ukraine, two US officials said on Nov 27, as the outgoing president seeks to bolster the government in Kyiv before leaving office in January. According to an official familiar with the plan, the Biden administration plans to provide a variety of anti-tank weapons from US stocks to blunt Russia's advancing troops, including land mines, drones, Stinger missiles and ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (Himars). The package is also expected to include cluster munitions, which are typically found in Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets fired by Himars launchers, according to the notification, seen by Reuters. The formal notification to Congress of the weapons package could come as soon as Dec 2, one official said. The contents and size of the package could change in the coming days ahead of Mr Biden’s expected signature. It marks a steep uptick in size from Mr Biden’s recent use of so-called Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows the US to draw from current weapons stocks to help allies in an emergency. Recent PDA announcements have typically ranged from US$125 million to US$250 million. Mr Biden has an estimated US$4 billion to US$5 billion in PDA already authorised by Congress that he is expected to use before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan 20. The United States has not exported landmines in decades, and their use is controversial because of the potential harm to civilians. Although more than 160 countries have signed a treaty banning their use, Kyiv has been asking for them since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in early 2022 and Russian forces have used them on the front lines. The landmines that would be sent to Ukraine are “non-persistent” landmines, with a power system that lasts for just a short time, leaving the devices non-lethal. This means that - unlike older landmines - they would not remain in the ground, threatening civilians indefinitely. Russian forces currently are making gains in Ukraine at the fastest rate since the early days of the 2022 invasion, taking an area half the size of London over the past month, analysts and war bloggers said this week. The United States expects Ukraine to use the mines in its own territory, though it has committed not to use them in areas populated with its own civilians. Trump on Nov 27 tapped Keith Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general who presented him with a plan to end the war in Ukraine, to serve as special envoy for the conflict. Quickly winding down the Ukraine war was one of Trump’s central campaign promises, though he has avoided discussing how he would do so.
