Republican U.S. Sen.-elect Tim Sheehy this week claimed a firework-ignited grass fire set near his campaign sign west of Livingston was a politically motivated arson. A Park County sheriff’s deputy on Dec. 21 notified dispatchers of a fire near Interstate 90 and West End Road. On social media, the sheriff’s office said winds that night were clocked at 50-to-60 mph and helped push the fire out to 26 acres. Initial reports from the sheriff’s office did say the incident was being investigated as a criminal act but did not imply political motivations, although Sheehy appeared certain of it in a video posted to his social media. "We just visited with the Jensen family here, four beautiful young kids, it was actually their third daughter’s birthday the night that these arsonists started the fire to burn down our sign and started about a 30-acre wildfire, burned their grazing land, harmed their property and its just sad that would happen here," Sheehy said. "We can still disagree, we can still respect each other in this country. We don't have to do things like this." "It was definitely someone setting off fireworks at the sign," Park County Rural Fire District Chief Dann Babcox told the Enterprise , referencing law enforcement reports. A call to the sheriff's office on Friday seeking any update or arrest information was not immediately returned. "Very disappointing, really tough way for these families to enter the Christmas week," Sheehy continued in his video. "It's effected several families here, including some structures, its a tough way for these people to have to start the holiday season." India’s fourteenth Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He was admitted to the AIIMS Delhi’s emergency unit after his health deteriorated. Singh, born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), was one of the most prominent economic experts and political figures of the country. Before becoming the prime minister in 2004, Singh worked as an economic advisor, deputy chairman of the erstwhile planning commission, deputy governor in the Reserve Bank of India, chief economic adviser to the Government of India and more. Most notable of his work was his tenure as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s government in 1991 and was most famous for the liberalization privatization and globalization (LPG) reforms in 1991. The cable brings electricity from Finland to Estonia across the Baltic Sea. The cable went down on Wednesday. The incident follows damage to two data cables and the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Both have been termed sabotage. Russian ship that sank in the Mediterranean was attacked, owner says MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian operator of a cargo ship that sank in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Algeria says it has been hit by a series of explosions in an act of sabotage. Oboronlogistica is a state-controlled company that operated the Ursa Major freighter. The company said the vessel was wrecked by three powerful explosions just above the water line in what it described as a “terrorist attack” that caused it to sink on Monday. The company said in a statement carried by Russia’s state RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday that the explosions left a hole in the ship’s starboard and filled the engine room with acrid smoke. Continuing claims, the total number of Americans collecting jobless benefits, climbed by 46,000 to 1.91 million for the week of Dec. 14. That’s more than analysts projected and the most since the week of Nov. 13, 2021. Weekly applications for jobless benefits are considered representative of U.S. layoffs.The hydrofoil vessels will launch in the new year after a successful funding bid by Belfast-based Artemis Technologies. to the the UK Government’s Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure Fund for £15.5 million. The fund is aimed at decarbonising the maritime sector. The ferries are described as floating as their hulls sit above water. Transportation service manager Laura Cromarty, said: “Two electric ferries will be trialled in Orkney following a funding bid submitted to the UK Government’s Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure (ZEVI) Fund, which aims to boost the country’s decarbonisation efforts. “The bid, submitted by Orkney Ferries Limited, Artemis Technologies and EMEC, will trial electric vessels using hydrofoil technology, which lifts the hull out of the water to navigate above the waves. “The trial will be a test of zero emission technology in some of the harshest of environments, with the aim to show proof of concept. The benefit to the communities involved is improved connectivity to the islands, extending the length of operating day where possible. “The first vessel, for up to 12 passengers, is due to be delivered to Orkney in January 2025. During January to March, the vessel will be tested by local crew in Orkney waters to help establish what can be achieved from a timetable perspective. “If it proves suitable for the conditions, it is anticipated the vessel will come into service in April 2025 operating between Rousay, Egilsay, Wyre and Shapinsay to Kirkwall. “As this is a trial service, it should be noted that there will be no impact to the existing scheduled service during the project period. “The ‘Electric Orkney’ project will provide additional services to the community over and above the existing backbone operation by Orkney Ferries Limited. Beijing, China, Dec. 26, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Aircraft carriers are important strategic platforms for China as a major power to defend its national sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and development interests while contributing to peace and stability to the region and the world. In 2024, all three aircraft carriers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy made tremendous achievements, as they took confident strides toward blue waters. One of the biggest highlights of China's aircraft carrier program in 2024 is the start of the sea trials phase for the PLA Navy's third aircraft carrier, the Fujian. The Fujian set out from Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard for maiden sea trials on May 1, and returned to the shipyard on May 8. During the eight-day sea trials, the Fujian tested its propulsion and electrical systems and other equipment, and achieved the expected results, the Xinhua News Agency reported at the time. The Fujian was launched on June 17, 2022. It is China's first domestically-made carrier that uses catapults. With a full-load displacement of more than 80,000 tons, the carrier is equipped with electromagnetic catapults and arresting devices. Since its maiden voyage, the carrier has reportedly conducted a total of five sea trials as of December. Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, on December 13 responded at a press conference to a media query about whether the Fujian had returned to port after its latest sea trial, following the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration's announcement of traffic controls for large vessels entering the Yangtze River estuary in early December. Wu said that the trials of the Fujian aircraft carrier are a standard part of its construction process and subsequent trials will be conducted as construction advances. Chinese military expert Song Zhongping told the Global Times on Monday that the frequency and intensity of the sea trials of the Fujian are considered high, and more sea trials are expected to come in the future, so as to test the new technologies used on the carrier and make sure it becomes combat-ready as soon as possible. For future sea trials, Song said he expects to see tests such as aircraft takeoff and landing as well as integration with other vessels. At the Airshow China 2024, held in November in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province, China unveiled three new types of carrier-borne fixed-wing aircraft: the J-15T fighter jet, which has been upgraded and made compatible with catapults, the J-15D electronic warfare aircraft and the J-35 stealth fighter jet. The J-15T, which is capable of catapult launches and reverse command, has demonstrated its preliminary readiness for takeoff and landing operations on the Fujian aircraft carrier, Xinhua quoted military expert Cao Weidong as saying. "Once commissioned, the Fujian will rapidly attain combat capability through coordinated operations with the J-15T," Cao added. Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times that the J-15T has also been upgraded with a radar with longer detection distance.
