IBADAN – A bill seeking for creation of new Oyo state with Ogbomoso as capital has passed second reading at the House of Representatives The first reading was presented at the floor of the house on February 27,2024. The bill was sponsored by Hon Olamijuwonlo Ayodeji Alao Akala, lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North South and Oriire Federal Constituency. The Bill seeks to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Amendment Bill), 2024, by amending Part 1 of the First Schedule, with the objective of creating two new states – Ibadan/Ibadan and Oyo/Ogbomoso. According to him Ibadan state with Ibadan city as a capital will have the 11 local government in Ibadan and the 3 in Ibarapa including Akinyele, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan South-West, Ibadan South East, Ibadan North-East, Ibadan North-West, Lagelu, Oluyole, Ona Ara, Ido, Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa North. Oyo The proposed new Oyo state with Ogbomoso as state capital will have Ogbomoso Afijio, Atiba, Atisbo, Ogo Oluwa, Irepo Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Ori Ire, Olorunsogo, Oorelopo, Oyo East, Oyo West, Saki East, Saki West, Surulere, Ogbomoso North and Ogbomoso South. Leading the debate, Hon Olamijuwonlo Alao Akala said “Creating Ibadan as a state would honor this legacy and provide a platform to preserve and promote the unique Yoruba culture and traditions that Ibadan embodies. The establishment of Ibadan as a state and to serve as its own capital would not only benefit its citizens but also contribute positively to Nigeria’s national development. As a state, Ibadan would have the autonomy to develop its cultural and historical assets, which are crucial to Nigeria’s national identity. “Currently, Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, dominates as a commercial hub, but shifting some of the focus to Ogbomoso could encourage infrastructure development and economic growth in underdeveloped areas. “The case for Ogbomoso as the capital stems from being the second-largest city in Oyo state after Ibadan, its historical role as a crucial town in Yoruba history, and its central location in the state. “Ogbomoso is rapidly growing in terms of population and urbanization. As the second largest city in Oyo state after Ibadan, it has experienced considerable population growth, and it is likely to continue growing due to its increasing urbanization and economic opportunities. By positioning Ogbomoso as the capital of Oyo state, there could be an opportunity to create more balanced development throughout the state He maintained that Ogbomoso stands a symbol of regional unity and progress. Geographically, Ogbomoso is strategically placed with excellent road and rail links to other major cities. It serves as a bridge between the northern and southwestern parts of the Nation, and also has a robust history of commerce, educational institutions, and an emerging local economy that has shown tremendous potential for growth. Ogbomoso would serve as the perfect administrative and political capital, not only because of its geographical location but also due to its rising infrastructure and industrialization.” The capital city would draw attention and investments from both the federal government and private investors, sparking a new wave of development. The economic and administrative growth this development promises will create balance and accommodate the growth that has long been stifled for them particularly, and for Nigeria generally. The creation of Ibadan as a state and its own capital, and Ogbomoso as the capital of Oyo state is a strategic and timely move for the advancement of the southwest region of Nigeria. It will promote balanced economic growth, facilitate better governance, encourage decentralized decision-making, and provide an opportunity for sustainable development that reflects the needs of the people. He concluded.

He is not yet in power but President-elect Donald Trump rattled much of the world with an off-hours warning of stiff tariffs on close allies and China -- a loud hint that Trump-style government by social media post is coming back. With word of these levies against goods imported from Mexico, Canada and China, Trump sent auto industry stocks plummeting, raised fears for global supply chains and unnerved the world's major economies. For Washington-watchers with memories of the Republican's first term, the impromptu policy volley on Monday evening foreshadowed a second term of startling announcements of all manner, fired off at all hours of the day from his smartphone. "Donald Trump is never going to change much of anything," said Larry Sabato, a leading US political scientist and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "You can expect in the second term pretty much what he showed us about himself and his methods in the first term. Social media announcements of policy, hirings and firings will continue." The first of Trump's tariff announcements -- a 25 percent levy on everything coming in from Mexico and Canada -- came amid an angry rebuke of lax border security at 6:45 pm on Truth Social, Trump's own platform. The United States is bound by agreements on the movement of goods and services brokered by Trump in a free trade treaty with both nations during his first term. But Trump warned that the new levy would "remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country" -- sowing panic from Ottawa to Mexico City. Seconds later, another message from the incoming commander-in-chief turned the focus on Chinese imports, which he said would be hit with "an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs." The consequences were immediate. Almost every major US automaker operates plants in Mexico, and shares in General Motors and Stellantis -- which produce pickup trucks in America's southern neighbor -- plummeted. Canada, China and Mexico protested, while Germany called on its European partners to prepare for Trump to impose hefty tariffs on their exports and stick together to combat such measures. - Framing the debate - The tumult recalls Trump's first term, when journalists, business leaders and politicians at home and abroad would scan their phones for the latest pronouncements, often long after they had left the office or over breakfast. During his first four years in the Oval Office, the tweet -- in those days his newsy posts were almost exclusively limited to Twitter, now known as X -- became the quasi-official gazette for administration policy. The public learned of the president-elect's 2020 Covid-19 diagnosis via an early-hours post, and when Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani was assassinated on Trump's order, the Republican confirmed the kill by tweeting a US flag. The public and media learned of numerous other decisions big and small by the same source, from the introduction of customs duties to the dismissal of cabinet secretaries. It is not a communication method that has been favored by any previous US administration and runs counter to the policies and practices of most governments around the world. Throughout his third White House campaign, and with every twist and turn in his various entanglements with the justice system, Trump has poured his heart out on Truth Social, an app he turned to during his 20-month ban from Twitter. In recent days, the mercurial Republican has even named his attorney general secretaries of justice and health via announcements on the network. "He sees social media as a tool to shape and direct the national conversation and will do so again," said political scientist Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University professor. cjc/ft/dw/bjtBBC Strictly Come Dancing's Vito and Sarah declare love before final

The move aims to produce a talent pipeline for WWE while creating an avenue for the company that hasn't always been available. When speaking to Yardbarker via the "Taylor Talks Wrestling" podcast, former AEW high flyer Fuego Del Sol, who is now firmly a part of the independent wrestling scene, shared his thoughts on the value of WWE's ID deal. "You really haven't had an avenue to get to WWE as an indie wrestler for at least a good year and a half," Del Sol said. "They did an independent wrestling tryout in September of 2023. So over a year since they've hired real indie talent... And so it's like they finally have decided to pick up on indie talent, and they finally launched this WWE ID program, which is good because they're not just hiring the top indie talent. They're picking up people who did random seminars all around the country. Guys that you've never heard of. Women that you've never heard of, and that's great. "Now you can get signed to WWE ID without a big social media following and without wrestling for any big companies. It has opened the door," Del Sol continued. "It broke the seal on what was needed to get noticed...You just got to be good. And now, if you're good and can get the right eyes in front of you, you can get signed, which opens the floodgates for indie wrestlers around." WWE likely saw AEW's success by taking top indie talents and turning them into legitimate draws for a bigger, more mainstream audience. By creating a pipeline for highly talented indie wrestlers, WWE is giving itself a significant advantage to continue producing some of the best wrestlers on the planet. Of course, for WWE, that means more than in-ring production. You must cut promos and tell stories to succeed at the top level. Often, indie wrestlers can't develop those skills on the minor circuits. Shows are too focused on making memorable matches and creating highlights to keep fans returning for more. That has limited multiple talents that have made it to the pros, at least in the early parts of their careers. "I feel like nowadays we're spoiled, and everybody can wrestle for the most part," Del Sol said. "If you're on a big show, you pretty much got it in the ring. What we're lacking is the promos and the storytelling ability. And that's where we need more work and more focus." It will be years before we see the true value of WWE's ID deal. However, for viewers of NXT, there may be some signs of progress within the year. WWE has arguably the best development systems in the world. Those who thrive get a chance to become true stars, and those who fall short get a softer landing on another promotion such as AEW or New Japan Pro Wrestling. On paper, WWE is doing something good for the wrestling industry and its future. Unfortunately, we haven't known how things look in reality for a while, but there's plenty of reason for optimism.
