(AP) — Dejounte Murray plans to return to the ' lineup on Wednesday night for the first time since in a season-opening victory over Chicago on Oct. 23. And when Murray takes the court against the , his mother will be on his mind. After practice on Tuesday, Murray discussed his impending return and disclosed more details about the previously unspecified “personal matters” that caused him to leave the team during the final days of the preseason. His mother had a stroke, he said. “It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray said of his last-minute decision to start against Chicago. He added that his hand injury near the end of that game was God's way of telling him, “‘Nah, you need to stay with your mom.’” “I was more concerned about my mother. That was my priority,” Murray continued. “I wasn’t really worried about my recovery.” Murray's mother has recovered well, he said, while he is “healthy and ready to help this team.” “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching," Murray said. “I’m ready to compete, bring that winning spirit.” The Pelicans (4-14) certainly could use the help, having lost 14 of 16 games since opening the season with a pair of victories. Injuries have ravaged the roster. At times, all five starters have been out. Star power forward Zion Williamson has missed 12 games this season — one with an illness and 11 with a hamstring injury. Herb Jones has been sidelined by a shoulder strain and Brandon Ingram's status is in doubt after he sat out practice on Tuesday with calf soreness that also sidelined him during a loss on Monday night at Indiana. But at least two starters — Murray and fellow guard CJ McCollum — are expected to play against the Raptors. “I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in his lone game with the Pelicans. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys.” AP NBA:

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton looked and sounded more like himself Monday night. He made one 3-pointer after another, found open teammates with nifty passes and, yes, was smiling again. Celebrating a second-straight win certainly helped matters, too. For the usually unflappable two-time All-Star, the bounce back game came as he finally started letting go of his pent-up frustration by speaking freely about what he’s learned over the first two months of this NBA season — and why he needs to stop blaming his early season struggles for Indiana’s slow start. “Everybody wants to say be happy, have fun. That’s hard to do when you’re not playing well or you’re losing,” Haliburton said after Monday’s 114-110 victory over New Orleans. “But differentiating the difference between happiness and joy — I’ve always had a joy for the game of basketball and love and appreciation for what I do. So I think I just got caught in becoming frustrated with myself and this kind of creeped into like job territory, you know what I mean? That’s not me.” Haliburton has displayed an unusual edginess since training camp began in late September. On media day, he talked about disproving the critics who claimed last season’s Eastern Conference finals run was more about luck than skill. He also found motivation in being deep on the bench during the U.S. Olympic basketball team’s gold-medal winning run. He thought it could propel himself and his team to even greater successes. Instead, a series of injuries have severely thinned the Pacers once-deep roster, Haliburton’s shots stopped falling, the losses piled up and suddenly the straight-talking guy who inspired so many with his beaming, trademark smile didn’t look or sound like himself. Others noticed. “I’ve got people sending me clips of how I’ve looked in the media and how I looked on the court and my body language sucks, my attitude sucks,” Haliburton said. “It’s hard to get out of what’s going on if you’re that way. I’ve been told my whole life to control what I can control and I can’t control if the ball goes in every time. But I can control my body language, I can control my energy and I can control my effort.” Whether it was the short conversation between Haliburton and All-Star forward Pascal Siakam after Sunday’s victory over Washington or something else, Haliburton looked like a different player Monday. He was 12 of 23 from the field, both season highs, made a season best nine 3s and produced his eighth double-double of the season. Haliburton finished with his second-highest point total (34), matched a season-high with 13 assists and made all the big plays down the stretch — the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3:06 remaining, driving for a layup that gave Indiana a five-point lead and finding Bennedict Mathurin for an alley-oop dunk that brought the crowd to its feet with a minute to play. The 24-year-old has shot 45% or better in just five of 18 games this season, and the NBA’s defending assists champ has seen that average drop to his lowest point (8.8) since he was traded from Sacramento to Indiana during the 2021-22 season. Plus, the Pacers are 8-10. Yes, Haliburton understands Indiana’s early woes are not entirely his fault. Indiana lost two key backup centers, James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson, with torn Achilles tendons just six games into the season. Starting forward Aaron Nesmith hasn’t played since Nov. 1 because of an injured left knee and starting guard Andrew Nembhard hasn’t played since Nov. 6 because of a sprained left ankle. But after last season’s playoff run, Haliburton is no longer motivated merely making the postseason — something he didn’t do at Iowa State or in his first three pro seasons. He wants to win a championship, something he didn’t do as a Wisconsin prep star. And Haliburton knows there’s only one way to achieve that goal — by being himself. “You guys watch us every game and you wouldn’t say right now we’re playing with a joy, with a passion, with an energy,” he said. “Our energy is up and down and that starts with me. So I can make that promise — that will be there moving forward. Put that on me because when my energy is good and we’re holding each other accountable, things are going to go well. That starts with me at the top and it trickles down to everybody else.”What Do 'Fighting' Bucs Have To Be Thankful For?Copy link Copied Copy link Copied Subscribe to gift this article Gift 5 articles to anyone you choose each month when you subscribe. The 23-year-old will join delisted Sun Hewago Oea and start training in Carrara on Wednesday morning. Jepson was on the radar of multiple clubs ahead of the Mid-Season Rookie Draft, including Brisbane, after being lured north following a breakout VFL campaign in 2023. The Oakleigh Chargers product won Coburg’s best and fairest last year, but has risen to another level with the Sharks, earning VFL team of the year honours at half-back. Jepson played in the state game against the SANFL in April before finishing runner-up in Southport’s best and fairest behind former Port Adelaide midfielder Boyd Woodcock, who trained with Gold Coast during last year’s SSP. After moving from a struggling Coburg outfit, Jepson thrived behind the ball at Southport, averaging 24.7 disposals at 82.9 per cent efficiency across 22 appearances in his first season in the sunshine state. Southport has plenty of links to the Suns. The Sharks were coached by Steve Daniel this year, who spent two seasons coaching Gold Coast’s NEAFL side. Port Adelaide great Matthew Primus will take the reins next year after being an assistant at Southport, following a stint as an assistant at the Suns. Of the 24 players picked in the 2024 VFL team of the year, two have been drafted – Riley Bice to Sydney last week and Saad El-Hawli to Essendon mid-year – while Liam McMahon (Carlton), Dom Brew (Western Bulldogs) and Jack Watkins (Port Adelaide) have all been invited to audition during the SSP.

Burt, the huge crocodile that rose to fame with a cameo in the movie “Crocodile Dundee” and continued to impress visitors with his fiery temper and commanding presence, has died. Burt died over the weekend, the Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia, said. He was at least 90 years old. “Known for his independent nature, Burt was a confirmed bachelor — an attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm,” Crocosaurus Cove wrote in social media posts. “He wasn’t just a crocodile, he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years,” the aquarium wrote. A saltwater crocodile, Burt was estimated to be more than 16 feet long. He was captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River and became one of the best-known crocodiles in the world, according to Crocosaurus Cove. The 1986 movie stars Paul Hogan as the rugged crocodile hunter Mick Dundee. In the movie, American Sue Charlton, played by actress Linda Kozlowski, goes to fill her canteen in a watering hole when she is attacked by a crocodile before being saved by Dundee. Burt is briefly shown lunging out of the water. But the creature shown in more detail as Dundee saves the day is apparently something else. The Internet Movie Database says the movie goofed by depicting an American alligator, which has a blunter snout. The Australian aquarium where Burt had lived since 2008 features a “Cage of Death” which it says is the nation’s only crocodile dive. It said it planned to honor Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign “celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park.”On a rare two-game skid, No. 24 Arizona faces Davidson

U.S. President Joe Biden said Washington would attempt to reach a cease-fire deal in Gaza with Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt, Israel and others, as he welcomed the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday. "Now Hamas has a choice to make. Their only way out is to release the hostages, including American citizens, which they hold, and, in the process, bring an end to the fighting, which would make possible a surge of humanitarian relief," Biden said. "Over the coming days, the United States will make another push with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and others to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza. With the hostages released and the end of the war without Hamas in power, that becomes possible." Israel launched a brutal offensive on Gaza following an attack by Hamas in October 2023 and continues it to this day despite a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire. The offensive, now in its second year, has killed over 44,000 people and injured 104,000, also leaving most of Gaza a devastated, uninhabitable wasteland, with food, medicine and water all in short supply. Months of attempts to negotiate a cease-fire have yielded scant progress, and negotiations are now on hold. Mediator Qatar suspended its efforts until the sides were prepared to make concessions. Last week, the United States vetoed another U.N. Security Council resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza. There are disagreements over Israel's continued military presence inside Gaza, particularly along the border with Egypt, the free movement of Palestinians inside the territory and the identity and number of prisoners to be freed in a swap. Türkiye has been fiercely critical of Israel’s brutal offensive in Gaza, which it and others say amounts to genocide. It has also slammed many Western allies for their support of Israel and repeatedly called for Muslim unity to facilitate a desperately needed cease-fire. Ankara urges Israel to reciprocate the constructive approach of the Palestinians in cease-fire negotiations and the international community to pressure Netanyahu’s government. Türkiye is a staunch supporter of Hamas, which it describes as a resistance movement, unlike the Western countries, which mostly define it as a terrorist group, and hosted Haniyeh several times to discuss cease-fire efforts and the humanitarian aid crisis in the blockaded enclave. It has formally applied to join South Africa's initiative to have Israel tried for genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).Star goaler Garbin claims top netball prize
