Olivia Hussey, star of the 1968 film 'Romeo and Juliet,' dies at 73MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City's winless run extended to six games Tuesday after Feyenoord fought back from three goals down to draw 3-3 in the Champions League. After five-straight losses in all competitions, City looked to be cruising to victory after going three up inside 50 minutes at the Etihad Stadium. But Feyenoord mounted an improbable comeback and leveled the game in the 89th minute to leave the home crowd stunned. ___ James Robson is at https://twitter.com/jamesalanrobson ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer James Robson, The Associated Press
Authored by Jonathan Turley, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is widely known to be angling to be the next Democratic presidential nominee after the implosion of Vice President Kamala Harris. This week, Newsom positioned not just his campaign but also his state as part of the “resistance” for the next four years against the Trump Administration. Newsom pushed a special session to secure a $25 million war chest to take the Trump Administration to court, even before the inauguration and release of policies by the incoming administration. I wrote earlier about how the loss of both houses, as well as the White House, will mean that lawfare and obstructive efforts will shift to the states . Newsom is moving to out-position governors (and potential primary opponents) like Govs. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker moved first in a chest-pounding press conference that he would stop the incoming administration from trying to remove undocumented persons, declaring, “You come for my people, you come through me.” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) added that he will “fight to the death” against Trump’s agenda. Newsom has upped the ante by demanding millions to pre-fund litigation against the new administration. With a massive budget debt burden, Newsom has continued to pile on new debt for politically popular initiatives. I cannot recall any state pre-positioning funds for the sole purpose of litigating against any incoming administration. The most obvious area of disagreement is the effort to ramp up the enforcement of immigration laws and to carry out deportations. While polls show that the public overwhelmingly supports such enforcement, including deportations, California is seeking to take the lead in court actions designed to slow or frustrate such efforts. It could prove costly, not just in litigation expenditures. The Trump Administration could seek to withhold federal funding from states and cities obstructing enforcement efforts. In the meantime, sanctuary cities are continuing to face rising costs associated with rising populations of undocumented migrants. For example, as we previously discussed , Denver Mayor Mike Johnson (D) declared that he was preparing the Mile-High City for its “Tiananmen Square moment” to fight the federal government in any attempt to deport unlawful migrants . Johnson warned that he would have not only Denver police “stationed at the county line to keep [ICE] out” but also “50,000 Denverites.” He later walked back the comments while repeating that the city is positioning itself to be part of the resistance. Now the Common Sense Institute (CSI), a non-partisan research organization estimated that eight percent of the city’s 2025 budget of $4.4 billion is now dedicated to housing and services for undocumented persons. If true, that amounts to $356 million or $7,900 per migrant. California has led other states in offering a wide array of benefits to undocumented persons. Notably, Californian voters surprised many Democrats this election with almost 40% voting for President-elect Trump over California’s own Vice President Kamala Harris. There is an obvious political advantage to Newsom in securing these public funds to assume the mantle as the leader of “the resistance” as a foundation for his 2028 campaign. The question is how such an obstructive position will prove to the advantage of Californians. As citizens sought to increase criminal penalties by passing Proposition 36 by over 70 percent (over the opposition of Newsom ), the governor is focusing on setting aside millions to fund a high-profile legal campaign against Trump’s administration. Ultimately, the litigation campaign is unlikely to change federal enforcement efforts significantly. However, Newsom hopes it will significantly change his electoral enhancement efforts.

Times News Network Ludhiana: With work on the new bridge over Buddha Dariya starting, residents of New Madhopuri can expect some relief from flooding caused by the drain overflowing. Work on the bridge was formally inaugurated on Friday. The existing bridge is small and obstructs the flow of the drain during heavy rainfall, leading to flooding. To address this, the municipal corporation floated tenders to build a new bridge at an estimated cost of Rs 1.96 crore under the Ludhiana Smart City Mission . The new bridge will be designed to facilitate smoother water flow, reducing the risk of waterlogging in surrounding areas. By constructing a higher and bigger bridge, the danger of waterlogging will be significantly reduced. The proposal to replace old bridges on Buddha Dariya with wider ones was first made a decade ago. However, financial constraints and other issues hindered progress till it was taken up under the Smart City mission. The project has to be completed by the end of March, 2025, which is the official deadline for remaining Smart City works. MLA, Ludhiana Central Ashok Prashar Pappi inaugurated development projects worth around Rs 5.67 crore in different areas of Ludhiana central constituency on Friday, including this bridge. He also launched projects to reconstruct streets in different areas of the constituency, including Amarpura, Janakpuri, Hari Kartar colony, Cheema colony, near Kusht Ashram, New Shivaji Nagar, Hargobind Nagar and Mohalla Bhardwaj. We also published the following articles recently No one wants to clean Buddha Dariya? Ludhiana's Buddha Dariya, a major Satluj River pollutant, remains a political pawn. Parties consistently pledge cleanup during elections, but little changes. A 650 crore rejuvenation project faces legal hurdles, and despite new treatment plants, pollution persists. Residents and political figures blame a lack of will and suggest stricter enforcement against polluting industries is crucial for real progress. From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? Let us know! Firearms are one of the leading causes of death among children aged 1 to 17, according to a Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions report . Sunny Vespico Jackson, a registered nurse and the injury prevention coordinator at Penn Medicine Trauma Center, cares for patients impacted by gun violence and works to underscore preventative measures. In the hospital’s trauma unit, Vespico Jackson and her colleagues see cases that range from gunshot injuries on the skin to fatal wounds to the body. “A lot of the injuries are life altering whether it’s because of the physical injury, but definitely because of the emotional injury and the psychological effects of the injury,” Vespico Jackson said. Sunny Vespico Jackson, an RN and Penn Medicine trauma and injury prevention coordinator (right), worked to obtain gun safes to hand out for free in the community Nov. 18, 2024. (Kimberly Paynter/WHYY) Penn Medicine Trauma Center is working to educate the public on gun safes as a preventative measure to curb gun violence, and to encourage keeping firearms locked and out of reach of children. Vespico Jackson believes it is also important to teach children and teens about firearm safety and responsible storage. Penn Medicine Trauma Center makes gun safety resources available on its website , which emphasizes proper gun storage and handling. “Parents don’t realize the kids know where the guns are,” Vespico Jackson said in an interview with WHYY News. “So if the guns are locked up, it prevents them from accessing the guns and getting injured or injuring someone else.” Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wonder database shows that approximately 3,500 children died in gun-related incidents in 2022, and firearms remain the top cause of death for children and teens in the U.S. to date. Athena Lee, PSOM clinical research coordinator (second from right), and Neda Khan, director of strategy and operations (right), helped hand out free gun safes to the community at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine in Philadelphia on Nov. 18, 2024. (Kimberly Paynter/WHYY) Advocates disappointed after court rejects Philly gun control lawsuit Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court upheld state laws that prevent municipalities from enacting their own firearm regulations. 4 days ago Terrence Betsill, security operations manager at Penn Medicine, noted that many of the accidental shootings among young children happen in homes where firearms are not safely stored. “73% of children know where guns are stored in the home, while 36% have actually touched the gun. The ideal way to store a firearm is to unload it, lock it and separate it from ammunition,” Betsill said. Black Americans are 10 times more likely to experience nonfatal firearm injuries compared to their white counterparts, according to researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Tracy Duckery of Mount Airy does not take the statistics lightly. The single mother of three is a city social worker and a gun owner. She purchased a firearm to protect her family amid concerns about rising crime, but felt the need to store it in a safe. “You want it to be safe in your home if you have kids, elderly people or other family members,” Duckery said. “You want to protect yourself from people on the outside, but you also want to protect the inside.” Duckery, who received firearm training, understands the risks guns pose in homes with children, which is why she recognizes the importance of proper storage. “My fear started to be bigger than protecting my home,” she said. “[It’s] thinking about my smaller kids. I had smaller kids, and I also have adult kids.” Dukery supports the teaching of the Penn gun safety program, and she underscores the need for accountability and open conversations about firearm security. “I’m just glad this program exists. I hope it continues,” Duckery said. With funding from the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant , Penn Medicine launched the gun safety initiative on National Injury Prevention Day on Nov. 18. As part of the program, Jackson said they hope to distribute more than 1,200 free gun safes to Philadelphia gun owners who live in the city limits. Gun owners don’t have to come to UPenn to get a gun safe in person. They can visit the university’s website to sign up , and a gun safe will be shipped out to the gun owner. Saquon Barkley has become the Shohei Ohtani of the NFL. There's no better home run hitter playing football right now. Barkley had touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards for the Philadelphia Eagles in a 37-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. He now has five runs of 50-plus yards this season and is on pace to break Eric Dickerson's single-season record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Barkley's historic performance against the Rams — his 255 yards set a team record — captivated a national audience and turned him into a fan favorite for the AP NFL MVP award. He's not the betting favorite, however. Josh Allen has the best odds at plus-150, according to Bet MGM Sportsbook. Two-time MVP Lamar Jackson is next at plus-250 followed by Barkley at plus-400. Running backs have won the award 18 times, including three-time winner Jim Brown, who was the AP's first NFL MVP in 1957. Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning it 45 times. Only three players who weren't QBs or RBs have been MVP. It takes a special season for a non-QB to win it mainly because the offense goes through the signal caller. Quarterbacks handle the ball every offensive snap, run the show and get the credit when things go well and the blame when it doesn't. Adrian Peterson was the most recent non-QB to win it when he ran for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012. Playing for a winning team matters, too. Nine of the past 11 winners played for a No. 1 seed with the other two winners on a No. 2 seed. The Vikings earned the sixth seed when Pederson was MVP. Barkley is a major reason why the Eagles (9-2) are leading the NFC East and only trail Detroit (10-1) by one game for the top spot in the conference. Does he have a realistic chance to win the MVP award? Kicker Mark Moseley was the MVP in the strike-shortened 1982 season when he made 20 of 21 field goals and 16 of 19 extra points in nine games for Washington. If voters once selected a kicker, everyone has a chance, especially a game-changer such as Barkley. Defensive tackle Alan Page was the MVP in 1971 and linebacker Lawrence Taylor won it in 1986. Running back Christian McCaffrey finished third in voting last year and wide receiver Justin Jefferson placed fifth in 2022. The Offensive Player of the Year award and Defensive Player of the Year award recognize the best all-around players on both sides of the ball, allowing voters to recognize non-QBs if they choose. Wide receivers and running backs have won the AP OPOY award seven times over the past 11 seasons. McCaffrey was the 2023 winner. The AP's new voting format introduced in 2022 also gives non-QBs a better opportunity to get MVP recognition. Voter submit their top five picks for each award, with a weighted point system. Previously, voters made one choice for each award. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league vote for MVP and seven other awards. The awards are based on regular-season performance. The Chiefs (10-1) and Bills (9-2) already are in position to lock up postseason berths right after Thanksgiving. Kansas City clinches a playoff berth with a win over Las Vegas on Black Friday and a loss by Miami on Thursday night, or a win plus a loss by Denver on Monday night. Buffalo can wrap up a fifth straight AFC East title with a victory over San Francisco on Sunday and a loss by the Dolphins. It's not a given that the Dallas Cowboys will be looking for a new head coach after this season. Owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on local radio that Mike McCarthy could end up getting a contract extension. "I don't think that's crazy at all. This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. We got a lot of football left," Jones said. McCarthy led the Cowboys (4-7) to three straight 12-win seasons, but they went 1-3 in the playoffs and haven't reached the NFC championship game since winning the Super Bowl 29 years ago. Injuries have contributed to the team's struggles this season, but Dallas was just 3-5 before Dak Prescott was lost for the rest of the season. The Cowboys upset Washington last week and their next four games are against teams that currently have losing records. If they somehow end up 9-8 or even 8-9, Jones could make a case for keeping McCarthy. Early yesterday morning, December 5, an autonomous group of activists boarded the F train at the Broadway-Lafayette Street/Bleeker Street subway station in Manhattan to replace the adverts displayed throughout the car with one message: “A man was lynched here.” The protesters’ phrasing references a banner the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) displayed outside its office in New York between 1920 and 1938 to acknowledge the lynching of African Americans . It calls attention to Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old unhoused Black man and Michael Jackson impersonator who was killed on May 1, 2023, during a six-minute chokehold at the hands of Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran from Long Island who was 24 at the time. Penny apprehended Neely from behind on an F train between the Second Avenue and Broadway-Lafayette Street/Bleeker Street stops after Neely reportedly made multiple threatening remarks, behaved erratically, and threw items at other passengers. The guerrilla action on the F train on Thursday morning comes days after the closing arguments in Penny’s trial. He was facing charges of manslaughter in the second degree and criminally negligent homicide. As of today, December 6, the judge dismissed the second-degree manslaughter charge, for which Penny faced up to 15 years in prison, after the jury deadlocked twice. This leaves only the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, which carries four years at most, and only if the judge decides to sentence him. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities Cynthia Harris, a forensic pathologist with the city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner who conducted the autopsy on Neely, concluded that Penny’s chokehold was responsible for his death. Another forensic pathologist hired by Penny’s attorneys testified that Neely’s death was caused by “the combined effects of sickle cell crisis, the schizophrenia, the struggle and restraint and the synthetic marijuana” that was in his system. Jordan Neely’s killing yielded dozens of protests, interventions , and marches across New York City in the year and a half leading up to the trial. Many protestors and some politicians regarded it as a modern-day lynching, calling for Penny to be charged with murder . The NAACP called Penny’s actions “ inhumane vigilante justice ,” a message shared by the Black Lives Matter organization as well. The autonomous group could not be reached for comment but shared a press release distributed by independent journalist Talia Jane , who documented the action , with input from multiple anonymous participants. “New York must ensure its public spaces are free from the racist state violence and racist interpersonal violence that shape so much of life for Black and brown people in this city,” said a participant from Brooklyn, according to the release. “Jordan Neely was lynched on the F train. Regardless of what the court or jury will say about the matter, we took action today to mark this train car as a place of mourning, a place of grief, and a place of rage against a city and a country that deems certain lives to be more valuable than others.” “Jordan Neely died at the hands of a state that insists Black and brown and poor and disabled folks — all but an elite few — are dispensable,” said a participant from the Bronx quoted in the release. “Jordan deserved care. All New Yorkers deserve care.” We hope you enjoyed this article! The Nerazzurri had won every game in the tournament save for the opening 0-0 draw away to Manchester City and were on fine Serie A form too. Francesco Acerbi was the , though squad rotation saw Mehdi Taremi partner Lautaro Martinez with Hakan Calhanoglu and Federico Dimarco returning to the starting XI. It was a dismal start for the Germans, who lost every game including a fumbled lead against 10-man Juventus. Eljif Elmas, Yussuf Poulsen, Netherlands international Xavi Simons, El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Lukas Klostermann, Xaver Schlager and David Raum were out of action. Denzel Dumfries couldn’t get enough accuracy onto his header at the back post on a Federico Dimarco corner routine, while Lautaro Martinez scuffed at the volley from the edge of the area. Inter broke the deadlock with a bit of luck, because Dimarco’s free kick went past everyone and ricocheted in off Castello Lukeba at the back post. Only some chaotic defending managed to prevent a second Inter goal on 31 minutes, Benjamin Pavard’s header on a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick practically cleared off the line by Christoph Baumgartner. There was bad news for Inter, as Pavard was running when he suddenly pulled up clutching the back of Dumfries should’ve scored straight after the restart, beginning the move inside his own half with a nutmeg and then getting to the far post to meet the Lautaro Martinez return pass, only to balloon the finish over. Calhanoglu’s swerving and dipping long-range strike also troubled the goalkeeper, while Mehdi Taremi accidentally got in the way of a Piotr Zielinski volley. Kampf blasted not too far wide from the edge of the area and Nusa forced Yann Sommer into a rare one-handed save when cutting inside from the left, but that RB Leipzig injury crisis got worse when substitute Assan Ouedraogo got his studs caught in the turf and seemed to sprain his knee. Dimarco floated a cross to the back post for the Marcus Thuram header, steered onto the roof of the net from a tight angle. Inter did have the ball in the net in stoppages with Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s tap-in, but the referee disallowed it for what he felt was a rather soft Thuram foul in the build-up. Lukeba og 27 (I)None
