(AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court should overturn Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era practice of removing voting rights from people convicted of certain felonies, including nonviolent crimes such as forgery and timber theft, attorneys say in new court papers. Most of the people affected are disenfranchised for life because the state provides few options for restoring ballot access. “Mississippi’s harsh and unforgiving felony disenfranchisement scheme is a national outlier,” attorneys representing some who lost voting rights said in an appeal filed Wednesday. They wrote that states “have consistently moved away from lifetime felony disenfranchisement over the past few decades.” This case is the second in recent years — and the third since the late 19th century — that asks the Supreme Court to overturn Mississippi’s disenfranchisement for some felonies. The cases use different legal arguments, and the court rejected the most recent attempt in 2023. The new appeal asks justices to reverse a July ruling from the conservative 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which said Mississippi legislators, not the courts, must decide whether to change the laws. Stripping away voting rights for some crimes is unconstitutional because it is cruel and unusual punishment, the appeal argues. A majority of justices rejected arguments over cruel and unusual punishment in June when they cleared the way for cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside in public places. Attorneys who sued Mississippi over voting rights say the authors of the state’s 1890 constitution based disenfranchisement on a list of crimes they thought Black people were more likely to commit. A majority of the appeals judges wrote that the Supreme Court in 1974 reaffirmed constitutional law allowing states to disenfranchise felons. About 38% of Mississippi residents are Black. Nearly 50,000 people were disenfranchised under the state’s felony voting ban between 1994 and 2017. More than 29,000 of them have completed their sentences, and about 58% of that group are Black, according to an expert who analyzed data for plaintiffs challenging the voting ban. In recent years, legislators have restored voting rights for only a few people. The other recent case that went to the Supreme Court argued that authors of Mississippi’s constitution showed racist intent when they chose which felonies would cause people to lose the right to vote. In that ruling, justices declined to reconsider a 2022 appeals court decision that said Mississippi remedied the discriminatory intent of the original provisions in the state constitution by later altering the list of disenfranchising crimes. In 1950, Mississippi dropped burglary from the list. Murder and rape were added in 1968. The Mississippi attorney general issued an opinion in 2009 that expanded the list to 22 crimes, including timber larceny, carjacking, felony-level shoplifting and felony-level writing bad checks. FOXBOROUGH — For Christmas, there are plenty of armchair GMs who would love to gift Drake Maye with a competent offensive line, along with a collection of game-breaking receivers who can get open against any coverage. Those presents would work nicely under Maye’s Christmas tree. Fantasizing how good the Patriots quarterback would be with a better cast around him might be the best gift of all for fans. But along with the benefits of having a line that can block and receivers who can beat man-coverage, there’s one more gift that would help Maye — fewer turnovers. The two against Buffalo hiked his total to 15, fourth most in the league. And he’s played in fewer games than those ahead of him. Maye can’t make the leap from good to great, committing that many turnovers. He can’t lead the Patriots out of the gutter, if he can’t take care of the football. Twelve of Maye’s 15 turnovers (8 picks, 4 fumbles) have come in the second half of games. Sometimes Maye’s aggressiveness, his desire to carry the offense and do more to get the Patriots back in games, has gotten the best of him. But as receiver Kendrick Bourne pointed out Tuesday before heading out to practice, Maye’s aggressiveness isn’t necessarily a bad trait. The trick for Maye is maintaining that aggressiveness, and making smarter decisions. That’s the fine line he has to navigate in the remaining games, as well as next season. “He has that mentality to make plays to try and win games,” Bourne said. “I love the aggression. That’s how we have to play. I say it all the time, we have to be hunter. We don’t want to be the prey. We want to be the hunters, and I think that mentality will eventually result in better results. “But, it’s definitely being smart. He knows that, making smart decisions while being aggressive is the way to go.” Case in point — not throwing a backward pass down by the goal line. Maye should have never attempted that swing pass to Rhamondre Stevenson, which resulted in a fumble charged to him, and an easy touchdown for the Bills during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 24-21 loss. Once the defensive end broke free, and had Stevenson lined up, Maye should have thrown the ball away to live another down. He’ll learn from that. If it happens again, he’ll eat the football. In terms of making ill-advised throws to the end zone while on the run, as he did against Buffalo, there are a few layers to that scenario. “If he sees something, and he trusts his eyes, I think it’s great,” Bourne said. “Sometimes the DB may be closer to the receiver than he thought when he’s scrambling to throw it, and maybe it results in something bad. But it’s like a 50-50. You see Josh Allen do it all the time ... so there’s both sides to it ... every player has strengths and weaknesses. You live and die by both. “With Drake, and the way he plays, I love it. I want him to keep doing it, making those plays and being aggressive because you win like that. You win shooting your gun. You don’t win keeping it in the holster.” Allen committed 14 turnovers his first season (12 picks, 2 fumbles lost). He averaged 1.17 turnovers per game (Maye is currently a 1.4 per game). His turnover totals are down this season, but last year, Allen had a career-high 18 interceptions with four fumbles lost. The Bills can live with it, because they have a talented team that can overcome some of those mistakes. They can live with it, because that aggressiveness is part of what makes Allen great. Patriots coach Jerod Mayo doesn’t view Maye as a mistake-repeater. “Drake is a competitor. He’s always going to try to go out there and make plays,” Mayo said Tuesday. “I think just the way he’s played, how well he’s played this year — often times we forget he’s a rookie quarterback — those are lessons learned ... he learns from his mistakes and I expect that to continue going forward.” When asked if he might be trying to do too much, Maye doesn’t agree with the premise. He wants to continue to go after plays, but at the same time he recognizes his turnover numbers need to improve. “I think we need to cut down on turnovers, and that starts with me. I’m checking the football, and throwing it incomplete or throwing it in the dirt, things like that. “But I’m still going to be aggressive,” he went on. “That’s the way I play. Introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, the Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck that competes against some of the most successful vehicles on sale today. Full-size rivals for the Titan include the Ford F-150 , the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 , the Toyota Tundra, and the Ram 1500 -– all goliaths in the industry and in their particular class. But, it would appear that the competition has won that battle, as the Nissan Titan will be no more after 2024. According to Nissan, the truck is being discontinued after 20 years in production and the Canton, Mississippi plant that currently makes the Titan will focus more on building EVs. But why get rid of the truck? Doesn't America love full-size pickups, especially ones built domestically? Unfortunately, America's affinity for full-size pickups was not enough to keep the Titan off the chopping block. Up against its popular rivals, the Titan just couldn't keep up. Class leaders among full-size pickup trucks offer bonkers off-road variants, hybrid technology, and wildly complicated tailgates. The Titan failed to compete against these goliaths of the industry, and as a result, sales never got quite high enough to meet Nissan's standards. As is typically the case with discontinued vehicles from any manufacturer, poor sales likely played a big part in the removal of the Titan from Nissan's lineup. No official press release from Nissan confirms this reasoning, but taking a look at the Titan's sales numbers gives us a pretty clear picture. In 2023, Nissan sold 19,189 Titans in the United States. That's a significant increase over 2022 sales (15,063 units sold) but nowhere close to the Toyota Tundra, which sold 125,185 units in 2023. The Ram 1500 sold nearly four times that many units (444,926 in 2023), the F-150 sold over 750,000 units, and General Motors sold a combined 840,000 units of the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. In a field of sales that strong, it's tough to justify carrying on, especially when you consider that Nissan's smaller truck, the Frontier, sold 58,135 units in 2023, so shifting focus to smaller trucks or an EV offering, as has been rumored, may be a better strategy. It also likely does make sense for the company to reallocate manufacturing resources to more electric options, which is what Nissan announced when the Titan was discontinued. On its way out the door, it's worth noting that the Titan is one of the cheapest cars you can currently buy with a V8 . The 5.6-liter V8 puts out a respectable 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque –- strong enough for most truck buyers even if it isn't up for battle against modern competition.Android phones have been the first to feature a bunch of notable standards. They were the first to support 4G , 5G , USB-C (way back in 2015 no less) and in-screen fingerprint sensors. And when it comes to wireless charging, you can trace that lineage all the way back to the Samsung Galaxy S3 from 2012 (though the webOS-poweered Palm Pre and its Touchstone charger is the true OG). Unfortunately, when it came to adding support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard to devices in 2024, it feels like Android phone makers were stuck on outdated patch notes. The Qi2 standard was officially announced in early 2023 during CES. We even gave it an award , as the spec looked to bring 15-watt wireless charging (and possibly more in future revisions), improved safety and critically the introduction of Magnetic Power Profiles that make it a cinch to align and attach compatible charging pads. In essence, Qi2 was set to bring the simplicity and ease of use iPhone owners enjoy with MagSafe products to the Android ecosystem. Not a single phone from any of the top three Android phone makers in the US (Samsung, Google and Motorola) offered support for Qi2 in 2024. (Photo by Sam Rutherford) Even more surprising is that in a rare move for a company that likes keeping its tech siloed neatly inside the walls of its ecosystem, Apple shared core parts of the MagSafe spec with other members of the Wireless Power Consortium (which is the governing body that oversees the Qi and Qi2 standards) to speed up development and interoperability. So you’d think after seeing the convenience and popularity of MagSafe accessories among iPhone users, Android phone makers would have rushed out to add Qi2 to as many devices as possible. But nearly two full years after the spec was finalized, the grand total of Android handsets that support Qi2 stands at one: the HMD Skyline. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement At this point, you might be saying that product development cycles are multi-year processes that are difficult to change prior to launch. And in most cases, you’d probably be right. But let's be honest, it’s not like Samsung, Google, Lenovo and others didn’t see this coming. Like Apple, practically all of the big Android phone makers are also members of the WPC , so they would have known about the development of Qi2 long before it was officially announced. On top of that, the first iPhone with MagSafe was the iPhone 12 , which came out four years ago. So even if we assume that the first time Samsung, Google et al were presented with the idea of a magnetic wireless charging system was during Apple’s keynote in the fall of 2020, you’d imagine that’s still more than enough time to engineer similar technology for use on today’s Galaxy and Pixel handsets. (Photo by Sam Rutherford) For manufacturers, another concern when adopting a new standard is that there may not be enough accessories and other compatible peripherals on sale to make implementation of new tech worth it. We’ve seen this in the past with modular phones like the LG G5 and Moto Z Force line and the funky palm-reading tech on the LG G8 . However, because Qi2 and MagSafe gadgets are largely interchangeable , there’s already a huge market of options like Anker’s MagGo line of power banks, which are some of my current favorite portable battery packs. Another annoyance is that some phones like the Razr Plus and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will even stick magnetically to some Qi2 accessories and may even suck down a tiny bit of juice. Unfortunately, this is more of a coincidence caused by the magnets used to help keep foldables open or closed, rather than an intentional use case. This means that even though these devices may appear to support Qi2 at first glance, accessories don’t maintain a firm grip and often slide off even in what appear to be ideal circumstances. Even cases that claim to add support for Qi2 are hit or miss, resulting in a poor experience for Android phone owners hoping to recreate the magic of MagSafe on their own. It’s really a shame, because it almost feels like with a few small tweaks Google, Moto and others could unlocked Qi2 support on a wider range of devices without a ton of extra effort or cost. (Photo by Sam Rutherford/Engadget) Unfortunately, while many Chinese phone makers have avoided Qi2 up until this point, that’s sort of to be expected with manufacturers like Oppo often favoring proprietary tech like its 65-watt AirVOOC wireless charging instead of more widely accessible industry standard. And because the Galaxy S24 family came out at the very beginning of 2024, Samsung didn’t have quite as much time to add Qi2 to its current flagship lineup as Google, which launched the Pixel 9 series just a few months ago. Regardless, this still doesn’t explain the general reluctance of OEMs to adopt what I’d argue is one of the most meaningful upgrades in accessibility and general usability you can add to a smartphone today. But the most frustrating thing is that six months ago, our friends at CNET pondered why we had yet to see any Qi2 Android phones . And as we’re nearing the end of the year, there’s still only a single model trying to spark hope that 2025 will be different. So kudos to HMD for doing what Samsung, Google et al. couldn’t be bothered to figure out. Now I’m just worried that if things don’t change next year, one of the most promising standards could end up in the graveyard (at least for Android phones) before ever getting a chance to thrive.
