U.S. companies tighten security after health care CEO’s killing leads to a surge of threats

The Broad Street Market in Harrisburg started 2024 with a bleak financial picture, but it’s ending the year on a positive note. On Wednesday, the market’s governing board, the Broad Street Market Alliance, adopted a $513,524 budget for 2025, an improvement over the $14,000 operational budget it started with earlier this year. The 2025 budget includes no rent increase for vendors and allocates about $100,000 in state funding for renovations and improvements in the market’s Stone Building. It also calls for hiring a permanent, full-time market manager to replace former executive director Tanis Monroy who left the market earlier this year. Monroy was charged with two felonies after police said he misappropriated roughly $17,000 from the market by using a company credit card for personal expenses, issuing fraudulent checks and taking unauthorized bonuses. The board said an application for the position will be made available soon. In addition, the budget addresses preventative maintenance needs for the first time in years and resumes paid advertising which the board temporarily halted last year as a cost-savings measure. The board said if the budget is carried forward, the market should have about a $100,000 operating fund balance for 2026, just in time for the projected reopening of the market’s Brick Building. The building was heavily damaged by fire in July 2023. In a letter published in November, Board chair Eric Hagarty said the market’s refreshed board in partnership with vendors, utility providers, supplies and community members starved off debt. He said a 25% voluntary vendor rent increase, board members filling in as market manager and a $350,000 state grant stabilized the budget. The Department of Community and Economic Development grant goes toward operating expenses and roof repairs and HVAC upgrades to the Stone Building. During the meeting, the alliance also accomplished the following: Approved a new vendor application for former tenant Honeybush Raw Smoothie Bar to return. Approved new non-discrimination and sexual harassment policies to ensure employees have a safe working environment regardless of race, gender, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, gender identity expression, religion, sex, age, handicap, disability, marital status, or political belief. A report from the Inspector General's office said there was no evidence that there were undercover FBI agents in the crowd or on Capitol Hill. 'We found no evidence in the materials we reviewed or the testimony we received showing or suggesting that the FBI had undercover employees in the various protest crowds, or at the Capitol, on January 6 ,' the report noted. But the inspector general revealed that the Department of Justice had 26 confidential human sources working for the FBI in Washington, D.C., during the protests. Confidential human sources work with the FBI to offer them information and insights about the inner workings of organizations threatening the country, such as criminal, terrorist and espionage networks. Four of the confidential human sources entered the Capitol building, 13 of them entered the restricted area around the Capitol. The report noted there was a confidential human source who was in contact with the leadership of far-right groups such as the Oath Keepers, and were aware of plans discussed by the Proud Boys. The victory for reproductive rights groups sets the stage for their next battle: challenging other laws on the books in Arizona they say are too restrictive. The 15-week cutoff, for example, allows exceptions only when the mother’s life is at risk. Absent a court order or legislative action, those laws will remain unchanged, even if they conflict with the voter-approved measure. Opponents of the constitutional amendment are preparing a defense. For now, providers will have discretion in performing abortions beyond 15 weeks. Legal challenges are expected within days, Attorney General Kris Mayes said at a news conference celebrating expanded access. "The position of the state of Arizona will be that we agree that abortion is legal in our state," Mayes said. Arizona was one of five states where voters approved ballot measures in the 2024 general election to add the right to an abortion to their state constitutions. Nevada voters also approved an amendment, but they’ll need to pass it again in 2026 for it to take effect. Another that bans discrimination on the basis of "pregnancy outcomes" prevailed in New York.
