LOS ANGELES , Dec. 17, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Sports and recreational injuries send more than 3.5 million Americans to the hospital emergency room each year according to the National Safety Council. The problem is much greater in collegiate sports, where NCAA injury incident reports reached 1.3 million in 2022. Beyond soft tissue damage, these injuries include life-altering Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears and Traumatic Brain Injuries. To reduce the occurrence and impact of sports-related injuries, CLR Neurosthenics today launched CLR Advantage TM , a groundbreaking solution that employs interactive software and a wearable, wireless sensor network to collect real-time neurophysiological data while athletes perform pre-programmed physical exercises, cognitive tests, reaction games and position drills. This data is then used to instantly generate reports that reveal hidden deficiencies, indicate player readiness, and guide training routines for injury prevention, performance optimization and rehabilitation. Designed by a team of leading sports neurophysiologists and biometric engineers, patent-pending CLR Advantage TM utilizes FDA-approved qEEG brain wave sensors and physiological monitors to capture a continuous stream of high-resolution data, including cortical power, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, trapezoidal tension, galvanic skin response and peripheral temperature. The solution then employs NASA technology to process biometric signals and report on neurophysiological capabilities, including brain connectivity, power, activation and symmetry during various physical tasks and mental exercises. CLR Advantage TM finally correlates event-marked physiologic data to reinforce neurologic observations. For example, data may indicate certain risk in an athlete that exhibits an elevated heart rate, neurologic asymmetry and qEEG inhibition during a single-leg balance exercise. CLR Advantage TM recently completed a two-year clinical trial with 177 NCAA Division I athletes at the University of Cincinnati . Performed in partnership with Select Medical at the University's Sports Medicine Department, the study compared the neurophysiological performance of healthy athletes with those suffering from ACL injuries. Results from the study, which continues to assess injured athletes through various stages of rehabilitation, were published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy . To supplement ongoing research, CLR Advantage TM is currently employed by the NFL Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS) to study ACL injury propensity through assessments that include a variety of dynamic force exercises. "For the first time, we now have a better understanding of exactly how the brain is impacted by an acute injury," said Robert Mangine, Senior Athletic Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and Residency Director for NovaCare Rehabilitation. "CLR Advantage TM allows us to look at brain activity as athletes progress through the rehabilitation, then use that data and musculoskeletal measures to determine a safe return to play." The Microsoft Azure cloud-powered CLR Advantage TM platform provides an end-to-end, HIPAA-compliant solution for operators to organize teams, create athlete profiles, schedule appointments, conduct assessments, monitor live biometric data, and generate comprehensive analytic reports. Offered on a subscription basis, the solution is available for demonstration at CLR Neurosthenics' Los Angeles Assessment Center. https://clradvantage.com/ For additional information contact: Mark O'Bryan (424) 256-7264 mark.obryan@clradvantage.com 1 https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/144/5/e20192759/38190/Soccer-Injuries-in-Children-and-Adolescents 2 https://perma.cc/9EG6-6TBJ ; Robert L. Portland, Falmouth win A,B state football championshipsCountry singer Caleb Kennedy, who competed in American Idol Season 19, has been sentenced to eight years in prison following his involvement in a 2022 car crash that killed a man in Pacolet, South Carolina. Kennedy pled guilty last week to the felony charge of driving under the influence resulting in death, according to the Greenville News . He was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison and a $25,100 fine, but he had that sentence and fine reduced to eight years and $15,100, with three of those years served in home detention. He also received credit for the nearly three years he has already served. Additionally, the singer will serve five years of probation, and he is required to attend mental health and substance abuse counseling. The legal update comes nearly three years after Kennedy, then 17, struck and killed 54-year-old Larry Duane Parris while driving his Ford F-150 on February 8, 2022. Warrants alleged that Kennedy was under the influence of marijuana at the time, and he was arrested on the DUI charge on the day of the crash. More from this section Ryan Beasley, Kennedy’s attorney, told the News that the sentencing was fair. “He’s got no record, and he was a minor when this happened,” Beasley said. “This wasn’t such an egregious act that you see most of the time, where people were drinking and driving then they hit somebody at night or going the wrong way down the road. This was a weird reaction from his prescription medicine and possibly THC.” Beasley also said that Kennedy is “very remorseful” and that the sentencing “starts the healing process for everybody involved in this situation.” (The News notes that Parris’ family wanted the maximum 25-year sentence.) Kennedy made it to the Top 7 of American Idol Season 19 but withdrew from the competition after a video of him standing next to a person wearing a Ku Klux Klan-style hood resurfaced. “I was younger and did not think about the actions, but that’s not an excuse,” Kennedy said, in part, on social media at the time. “I wanna say I’m sorry to all my fans and everyone who I have let down.” More Headlines: ‘Brilliant Minds’ Scoop on ‘Terrifying’ Cliffhanger, Plus What’s Next With Carol’s Patient? ( MENAFN - Asia Times) This article was originally published by Pacific Forum. It is republished with permission. Vietnam's maritime security is shaped by its geographic position, strategic interests, and the pressing need to safeguard its territorial waters. The South China Sea (known in Vietnam as the East Sea) serves as a crucial route for international trade. It is also marked by intricate territorial disputes, highlighting the importance of Vietnam's naval and coast guard forces. China's growing fleet of unmanned air, surface, and underwater systems poses a serious security threat to Hanoi. In August 2024, a Chinese WZ-10 drone entered Vietnam's airspace 160 to 170 kilometers from Cam Ranh, a vital naval base. The Chinese have raised the temperature in the South China Sea by using unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), gliders and Argo floats , which are dual-use. This has prompted Vietnam to seek measures to enhance its monitoring, patrolling, and response capabilities without overcommitting its limited conventional forces. A key opportunity to bolster these efforts is integrating unmanned systems into Vietnam's defense arsenal. Given the existing capacity shortfalls, Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (“Quad”) nations, which have a plan to support capacity-building for regional navies in Southeast Asia, are well-positioned to enhance Vietnam's capabilities in this area. The Vietnamese People's Army (VPA) has extensive experience operating UAVs to augment its maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. These UAVs are either domestically developed with foreign assistance or imported from abroad. Vietnam also showcased its larger class of UAVs, conceivably a medium-altitude long-endurance system, during its first international defense expo in 2022. However, Vietnam's focus on unmanned maritime vehicles, both surface and underwater, is still in a nascent stage. As tensions in the maritime domain with China escalate, the VPA seeks advanced unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and UUVs to bolster its maritime security and protect critical maritime infrastructure in the Vietnamese EEZs. These systems not only are cost-effective but they also play a crucial role in ISR capabilities. The Quad is now more strategically aligned and is recognized as a valuable platform for fostering regional cooperation that aims to enhance peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. The September 2024 Quad joint statement explicitly highlights the importance of strengthening maritime security capabilities of Southeast Asian nations. Vietnam, given its robust ties with the Quad countries, has much to gain from partnering with the Quad, particularly in improving its technological and operational prowess in maritime security. The Quad nations have expertise in developing and operating unmanned maritime systems. Sharing technological knowledge or co-developing specialized systems tailored to Vietnam's requirements would substantially help its ISR capabilities. In particular, India and Vietnam maintain close defense ties, given that both use Soviet weapon systems. During Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's state visit to India in August 2024, both nations reiterated their commitment to strengthening mutual relations. India has provided a $300 million loan to Hanoi for acquiring two types of patrol vessels. In addition, the US has supplied the Vietnam Coast Guard with 18“Metal Shark” patrol boats, while Japan is offering a $348 million loan to Hanoi for constructing six patrol boats, set to be operational by 2025. There is potential for industrial collaboration, which could lead to a joint venture in constructing UUVs or USVs that would be advantageous for both nations. Defense industry cooperation to develop unmanned maritime systems presents a significant opportunity for the Quad nations to collaborate with Hanoi. This can include building or upgrading command-and-control infrastructure to ensure seamless operation and coordination. Additionally, supporting Vietnam in building a domestic unmanned maritime systems industry, potentially through technology transfers and specialized human resource training, could foster greater autonomy and capability in Vietnam's defense sector. While the potential benefits of unmanned systems are clear, they are not without challenges. Vietnam's approach to security partnerships is carefully balanced to avoid over-reliance on any one partner. Vietnam aims to engage with the Quad, ensuring its non-alignment policy remains intact while maximizing cooperation benefits. Although unmanned systems are more cost-effective than manned alternatives, acquiring and maintaining these still entails significant investment. Vietnam may need to explore financing options with the assistance of Quad nations. Additional challenges include the absence of a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework for unmanned systems development and deployment in Vietnam. The collaboration in unmanned maritime systems may represent a significant advancement for Vietnam and the Quad. In conclusion, Vietnam's maritime security is a linchpin for regional stability and economic prosperity. As maritime threats grow more sophisticated, integrating unmanned maritime systems into its strategy will provide a critical edge for VPA. With its collective technological expertise and strategic interest in a free and open Indo-Pacific, the Quad can play a pivotal role. By focusing on technology transfer, training, infrastructure support, and joint exercises, the Quad can help build Vietnam's capacity to protect its waters. While Vietnam maintains a non-aligned stance, its advocacy for a rule-based order and its reliance on international law to safeguard its maritime interests make it a natural partner for the Quad. Strengthening Vietnam's maritime capabilities will therefore greatly enhance regional security and also underscore the Quad's commitment to safeguarding the shared interests of Southeast Asian countries. All of them could play pivotal roles in fulfilling a new political agenda that could change how the government goes about safeguarding Americans' health — from health care and medicines to food safety and science research. And if Congress approves, at the helm of the team as Department of Health and Human Services secretary will be prominent environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine organizer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. By and large, the nominees don't have experience running large bureaucratic agencies, but they know how to talk about health on TV . Centers for Medicare and Medicaid pick Dr. Mehmet Oz hosted a talk show for 13 years and is a well-known wellness and lifestyle influencer. The pick for the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Marty Makary, and for surgeon general, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, are frequent Fox News contributors. Many on the list were critical of COVID-19 measures like masking and booster vaccinations for young people. Some of them have ties to Florida like many of Trump's other Cabinet nominees: CDC pick Dr. Dave Weldon represented the state in Congress for 14 years and is affiliated with a medical group on the state's Atlantic coast. Nesheiwat's brother-in-law is Rep. Mike Waltz , R-Fla., tapped by Trump as national security adviser. Here's a look at the nominees' potential role in carrying out what Kennedy says is the task to “reorganize” agencies, which have an overall $1.7 billion budget; employ 80,000 scientists, researchers, doctors and other officials; and affect the lives of all Americans. The Atlanta-based CDC, with a $9.2 billion core budget, is charged with protecting Americans from disease outbreaks and other public health threats. Kennedy has long attacked vaccines and criticized the CDC, repeatedly alleging corruption at the agency. He said on a 2023 podcast that there is "no vaccine that is safe and effective,” and urged people to resist the CDC's guidelines on if and when kids should get vaccinated . Decades ago, Kennedy found common ground with Weldon , the 71-year-old nominee to run the CDC who served in the Army and worked as an internal medicine doctor before he represented a central Florida congressional district from 1995 to 2009. Starting in the early 2000s, Weldon had a prominent part in a debate about whether there was a relationship between a vaccine preservative called thimerosal and autism. He was a founding member of the Congressional Autism Caucus and tried to ban thimerosal from all vaccines. Kennedy, then a senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, believed there was a tie between thimerosal and autism and also charged that the government hid documents showing the danger. Since 2001, all vaccines manufactured for the U.S. market and routinely recommended for children 6 years or younger have contained no thimerosal or only trace amounts, with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccine. Meanwhile, study after study after study found no evidence that thimerosal caused autism. Weldon's congressional voting record suggests he may go along with Republican efforts to downsize the CDC, including to eliminate the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, which works on topics like drownings, drug overdoses and shooting deaths. Weldon also voted to ban federal funding for needle-exchange programs as an approach to reduce overdoses, and the National Rifle Association gave him an “A” rating for his pro-gun rights voting record. Kennedy is extremely critical of the FDA, which has 18,000 employees and is responsible for the safety and effectiveness of prescription drugs, vaccines and other medical products — as well as overseeing cosmetics, electronic cigarettes and most foods. Makary, Trump’s pick to run the FDA, is closely aligned with Kennedy on several topics . The professor at Johns Hopkins University who is a trained surgeon and cancer specialist has decried the overprescribing of drugs, the use of pesticides on foods and the undue influence of pharmaceutical and insurance companies over doctors and government regulators. Kennedy has suggested he'll clear our “entire” FDA departments and also recently threatened to fire FDA employees for “aggressive suppression” of a host of unsubstantiated products and therapies, including stem cells, raw milk , psychedelics and discredited COVID-era treatments like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. Makary's contrarian views during the COVID-19 pandemic including the need for masking and giving young kids COVID vaccine boosters. But anything Makary and Kennedy might want to do when it comes to unwinding FDA regulations or revoking long-standing vaccine and drug approvals would be challenging. The agency has lengthy requirements for removing medicines from the market, which are based on federal laws passed by Congress. The agency provides health care coverage for more than 160 million people through Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act, and also sets Medicare payment rates for hospitals, doctors and other providers. With a $1.1 trillion budget and more than 6,000 employees, Oz has a massive agency to run if confirmed — and an agency that Kennedy hasn't talked about much when it comes to his plans. While Trump tried to scrap the Affordable Care Act in his first term, Kennedy has not taken aim at it yet. But he has been critical of Medicaid and Medicare for covering expensive weight-loss drugs — though they're not widely covered by either . Trump said during his campaign that he would protect Medicare, which provides insurance for older Americans. Oz has endorsed expanding Medicare Advantage — a privately run version of Medicare that is popular but also a source of widespread fraud — in an AARP questionnaire during his failed 2022 bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania and in a 2020 Forbes op-ed with a former Kaiser Permanente CEO. Oz also said in a Washington Examiner op-ed with three co-writers that aging healthier and living longer could help fix the U.S. budget deficit because people would work longer and add more to the gross domestic product. Neither Trump nor Kennedy have said much about Medicaid, the insurance program for low-income Americans. Trump's first administration reshaped the program by allowing states to introduce work requirements for recipients. Kennedy doesn't appear to have said much publicly about what he'd like to see from surgeon general position, which is the nation's top doctor and oversees 6,000 U.S. Public Health Service Corps members. The surgeon general has little administrative power, but can be an influential government spokesperson on what counts as a public health danger and what to do about it — suggesting things like warning labels for products and issuing advisories. The current surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, declared gun violence as a public health crisis in June. Trump's pick, Nesheiwat, is employed as a New York City medical director with CityMD, a group of urgent care facilities in the New York and New Jersey area, and has been at City MD for 12 years. She also has appeared on Fox News and other TV shows, authored a book on the “transformative power of prayer” in her medical career and endorses a brand of vitamin supplements. She encouraged COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic, calling them “a gift from God” in a February 2021 Fox News op-ed, as well as anti-viral pills like Paxlovid. In a 2019 Q&A with the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation , Nesheiwat said she is a “firm believer in preventive medicine” and “can give a dissertation on hand-washing alone.” As of Saturday, Trump had not yet named his choice to lead the National Institutes of Health, which funds medical research through grants to researchers across the nation and conducts its own research. It has a $48 billion budget. Kennedy has said he'd pause drug development and infectious disease research to shift the focus to chronic diseases. He'd like to keep NIH funding from researchers with conflicts of interest, and criticized the agency in 2017 for what he said was not doing enough research into the role of vaccines in autism — an idea that has long been debunked . MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — Nearly 1,600 fans showed up to watch two special football teams play at Mountaineer Stadium Saturday. Mount Vernon was driving late in the first half as it trailed Seneca 21-13. The Mountaineers got down to the 22 of Seneca and then a false start pushed them back to the 27 for a 2nd-and-13 situation. Gavin Johnston rolled out to his left and fired a ball near the pylon but it was fluttering short and Ty Harris was able to cut in front of the receiver and make a diving interception at the 3-yard line with 1:17 left in the half. Seneca (12-0) went on to drive 97 yards to take a 28-13 lead into the half and grab momentum on its way to a 55-26 victory in the Class 3 state quarterfinal game. "It was a huge stop, for one. We knew we got the ball at half, and we got that pick and I'll be honest, we were content with going into halftime there," Seneca head coach Cody Hilburn said. "We weren't going to force the issue and then we got put into that third-down situation." "I felt good there at the end of the half. We got the ball with 2:35 or whatever it was (2:32) to go down and score and that's usually our strength is that two-minute offense," Mount Vernon head coach Tom Cox said. "Then they turned around and scored so that was a big deal." The Indians now host Lift for Life Academy Charter at 1 p.m. Nov. 30 for a shot to return to Columbia for a Class 3 state championship game. Lift for Life defeated Dexter 50-12 on Saturday. "Our community's going to rally behind us like they always do. It's going to be a special time for our kids," Hilburn said. Brodie Probert, a junior for Seneca, will be heading to his third semifinal in three years in high school and is going to be playing in his second semifinal game. "Last year (state championship loss) we had a bad taste in our mouth and we're coming back for revenge," Probert said. Seneca's Kaden Clouse ran the ball for a gain of seven yards to put them out at the 10 but then on a designed quarterback draw play, he was dropped for a loss of two to set up 3rd and 5. Cox called a timeout with about a minute left in the half. "I didn't want to punt down there in that condensed area. That made me nervous. So, we wanted to try and get a first down. At that point, if we're going to throw it, we might as well try to get vertical on them," Hilburn added. Hilburn took a risk from the 8-yard line as Clouse dropped back and sent one in the air for nearly 40 yards and Blaze Graham ran underneath of it as he beat his man off the line. Graham ran for another 45 yards down to the 5 of Mount Vernon before being tackled for an 87-yard play. The Mountaineers defended well and pushed the Indians back to the seven for a 4th-and-goal situation from there. Then two false start penalties had Seneca looking at 4th and goal from the 17 with 14 seconds left in the half. Hagen Ginger beat his man on a post to the corner of the end zone and Clouse found him for the 17-yard score to make it 28-13 at halftime. "Our kids were still extremely confident that we were going to find a way to get it in. Hagen Ginger is a veteran for us. He's caught a lot of balls for us and he's a tough matchup. We got him flexed out, got him one-on-one and he went and made a play for us," Hilburn said. "Huge. It got us momentum going into halftime." Seneca added a score to start the second half when Roman Miller caught an option pitch from Clouse and ran 50 yards for a touchdown to make it 34-13. The Indians missed the extra point kick wide right. Mount Vernon (9-4) played within two or three scores for the first three quarters before seeing turnovers give Seneca an opportunity to pull away in the fourth. The final score wasn't quite indicative of how the Mountaineers played all game. "I feel like that. But, in the end, the scoreboard doesn't lie. We turned it over a couple of times in bad situations," Cox said. Cox added that his team remained confident in the locker room at halftime and hoped to come out and get a stop and keep the game within two scores but didn't end up being able to do that. The Mountaineers turned the ball over on downs late in the third quarter while trailing 41-20 and Seneca turned it into a 78-yard drive in just under five minutes to go up 48-20 with 7:18 left to play. The first play of the next drive was a snap that got past Johnston and was booted around by the quarterback all the way back to the 8-yard line where Kye Adams of Seneca recovered. The Indians added a score on a 1-yard plunge by Probert to make it 55-20. Probert had six rushes for 60 yards and two touchdowns. He started Seneca's scoring with a 21-yard run in the first quarter. He also completed a pass to Clouse for 18 yards and caught a pass from Clouse for 12 yards in the game. "It's nice to come out with a bang and it all starts with those guys up front," Probert said of his touchdown to start the game. The junior quarterback/running back was a part of a trio of ball carriers that really punished the Mountaineers' defense by the end of the day. Clouse had at least 15 carries for 144 yards on the ground. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 140 yards as well. Clouse threw two touchdowns. The one to Ginger and another on a quick screen to Harris that went for 24 yards. Miller added at least 15 rushes for 169 yards and four total touchdowns. He ran for more than 100 yards in the second half and had three scores as well. His touchdown runs went for 1, 50, 19 and 6 yards. "It's awesome. We can all come in and we all have a fresh pair of legs. It all starts with that line up front. I think they're, personally, one of the best offensive lines in the state," Probert added. Mount Vernon's senior leaders and career milestone guys led the way. Johnston, the program's career leader in passing yards and touchdowns, threw three touchdowns while going 22 for 31 for 251 yards. He scrambled three times for 28 yards and a another score. He pushed his career passing touchdown mark to 68 and his yardage up over 7,400. He had 28 passing touchdowns this year and more than 2,800 yards. Braden Dodson ran the ball 18 times for 87 yards as Seneca's defense was pretty stingy in the run department all game. Dodson finished with 77 career touchdowns, more than 5,500 yards and had more than 1,500 of them this year. He scored 25 times on the ground in 2024. "Gavin Johnston and Braden Dodson have just excelled all the way through. They've played together for a long time — all 14 of these seniors. These guys are going to be hard, hard, hard to replace," Cox said. "They've meant a lot to this football program, to the school, the community and I hope to football in Southwest Missouri. I'm sad for them that are going out. It's over for them and I really wanted to get them a state championship. "I told them, sometimes you don't get rewarded for your hard work." There are no moral victories, although Mount Vernon played Seneca closer than anyone else has this fall when it lost by 21 back in September and it now has the most points scored on the Indians' defense with 26. They also had two of the bigger highlights in the game with some one-handed catches. One was by Hunter Dawson for a 20-yard touchdown and the other by Jarrett Zerby for an 18-yard gain.A Thirroul GP who specialises in treating women during midlife and menopause has opened a new clinic in Wollongong's southern suburbs. Login or signup to continue reading With demand surging for services relating to the skincare, weight and weight loss medication and hormonal and mental health issues that surround perimenopause and menopause, Dr Jemima Grant has set up Sanctuary by Thrive, in Unanderra. "Think about like a 40 year old's dream, somewhere where you can go and have, get advice about nice skin, get your skin treated, talk about weight loss, talk about hormone management, get evidence-based advice," she said. "I feel like a lot of women in their 40s - and men - just find it hard to lose weight, for instance, and as a system we're not offering them good care." "But as with many things in medicine and health and wellness, there is starting to be a huge commodification of menopause. "But that means having evidence-based guidelines, or having a doctor talk to you about it is, really important, because not everything is menopause , but also menopause is really a holistic subject." "Not everything can be fixed with a tablet or a pill or a patch, you also need to make changes in your life and adapt and you need help and support to do that." "Teaching you to look after yourself is a huge part of surviving menopause because you actually have to change and start nurturing and not giving out all the time, because you just run out of energy, and that obviously applies to all humans, but we're not machines. She is operating from a site on Tannery Street that fit her purpose of helping people with their "wellness, rather than sickness". "I also wanted to have a really safe environment for people to come that wasn't a traditional medical environment with sick people, because a lot of what we're doing is health prevention," she said. "I called it The Sanctuary because I wanted people to see it as a place they could come to speak to, qualified, educated people about their concerns - or maybe things that they might feel a bit shy or embarrassed about." Dr Grant works with other health practitioners, like a dietitian, diabetes educators and personal trainers. "I feel like this type of thing where we're seeing really multi-disciplinary teams working in wellness rather than sickness will be happening more and more," she said. While she has focused on women's health, Dr Grant said she had started seeing more men in recent months. "I'm seeing young men and middle-aged men who were so responsive to coming to like a discreet place to talk about their concerns, so I have tried to keep it a bit gender neutral," she said. "And I think you'll find in a year or two that that actually men will be coming to these sort of places more often to to look after themselves." Using her own experience Dr Grant became an advocate for women experiencing menopause symptoms after being blindsided when she started experiencing perimenopause, even though she was a GP with years of experience. She remembers being told 'it's nothing, it's in your head, have an anti-anxiety tablet' and has since hosted events to help educate women about perimenopause. She publicly shared he experience of having symptoms in her 40s, which ended in her quitting her job because she didn't get the right help to treat the condition. "With my third baby I started to get sweats while I was breastfeeding, which I thought was because I was really stressed," she said. "I had some postnatal depression, and over the next few years I had a lot of emotional symptoms and weight changes that were, when I look back on it, worse the two weeks before my period." "I was sitting there sweating, dripping on my patients, getting super-stressed and having panic attacks on the way to work, not sleeping well." "I went to my doctor, who put me on an anti-anxiety tablet - which I tried and got side-effects - and I ended up just quitting my job." Now years later, she incorporates clinical medicine focusing on perimenopause into her Thirroul skin clinic, encouraging people to try yoga, herbs, exercise or hormone treatments to treat their symptoms. Could you have perimenopause? While perimenopause is slowly becoming much better understood and widely talked about, Dr Grant said too many women were not being diagnosed and treated. "As a doctor, my biggest message is, if you're getting a lot of symptoms of perimenopause, it can herald that you're at risk of cardiovascular disease in your future life," she said. "Perimenopause is kind of like the canary in the coal mine for women - if you're getting a lot of sweating, hot flushes it's a warning sign that we need to treat it and not just ignore it." "Women have been told there's nothing we can do about it, it's just something you have to go through, or that it's too dangerous to treat - but that's actually not true." She said women should be on the lookout for symptoms of perimenopause from their mid-to-late 30s, with a new onset of anxiety or insomnia usually the earliest signs she sees as a clinician. "This can be from low progesterone - which happens way before your estrogen starts to drop - and is a very calming hormone," she said. "So in the two weeks before our period you might feel anxious, have insomnia, not sleep well, to panic, have rage and low mood. And you can actually correct that with a bioidentical progesterone, or you can start with herbs." She said women may also see a change in their weight as their estrogen starts to drop, because of the link between estrogen and insulin. "When you're low in estrogen, you tend to put weight on your abdomen, which is the area that has high metabolic risk and is very hard to lose, and increases your risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure," she said. "I want women to know that there is a way of living your life where you have to become a bit more accountable, and this will help these symptoms. "Women need to know that this is a time that they have to look after themselves, and that there is so much you can do now to prevent and help with symptoms, and also prevent chronic disease down the track."
