The chilly breeze that arrived last weekend signified the last stretch of what is considered the longest Christmas season in the world, which is observed in the Philippines. From the advent of the “ber months,” this nation has psyched itself up for the coming festivities, starting with the hanging of parol (star-shaped lanterns patterned after the star of Bethlehem) outside windows, to the Christmas countdowns conducted by media outlets, malls, and local government units. Malls have giant Christmas trees up and standing since September, a fitting tribute to the mall culture that Filipinos are known for worldwide. The Philippines is so enamored with Christmas that over half a million airline seats have been purchased locally ahead of time for travel during Christmas and New Year’s Days to both domestic and Asian destinations. The Bureau of Immigration announced last Dec. 15 that it was bracing for a rise in both arrivals and departures this month, estimating some 110,000 daily holiday travelers compared to the pre-pandemic average daily numbers of 55,000 arrivals and 47,000 departures (2019). As Christmas is deeply ingrained in Philippine culture, a significant number of the 2.16 million overseas Filipino workers are returning home to spend Christmas with their loved ones. They, along with the Filipino migrants living abroad, are looking forward to family reunions, festive parties and celebrations, and the observance of religious rites that this long season brings. Travel has been an integral part of this holiday season, even figuring prominently over 2,000 years ago during the first Christmas, when Jesus Christ was born in the Roman-controlled region of Judea/Palestine. According to the Gospel of Luke, Joseph and Mary had to leave Nazareth in Galilee for the Bethlehem town of David in Judea in compliance with Caesar Augustus’ order for a census of the entire Roman world. Based on its historical origins, the first Christmas was a story of humility. Jesus’ earthly parents, who were traveling far from home, had no place to stay except in a stable, which was, as one would expect, full of smelly farm animals. Mary gave birth to her firstborn son, Jesus. “She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them” (Luke 2:7). The Belén, the traditional nativity story of Jesus present in most Filipino homes, has evolved since it was introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. The glamorized composite version (with three wise men) often misses out on the reality of the first Christmas. The first Christmas was beauty in simplicity witnessed by shepherds and celebrated by angels who declared, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11). Despite its lack of grandeur, the birth of Jesus gave us more. It was a testament to how love shapes us all, uniting even the mortal and the divine. It therefore behooves this country, where some 90 percent of the population identify as Christians, to remain true to what Jesus Christ’s earthly life stands for. The message of Christmas, then and now, is meant for everyone. By choosing to be born poor among the colonized Jews, Jesus was elevating the higher and revolutionary values of giving and self-sacrifice as the lasting solutions to poverty and conflicts that humanity has not been able to shake off since Adam. Jesus identified himself with those who were destitute, vulnerable, or unwelcome, no matter their faith beliefs or social status. Jesus said himself that “those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces” (Matthew 11:8). Amid the chaos and excitement of this season, it’s easy to forget what makes Christmas so special to the Philippines. Christmas is and should remain a vehicle for giving and extending empathy to those who are suffering and in need. Malacañang has rightly advised against lavish Christmas parties among government workers, given the six storms that walloped the country in just one month, from Oct. 24 through Nov. 18, that affected 15 million residents across 17 regions. But such a call for austerity is hollow because the national coffers have been bled dry by tone-deaf lawmakers and bureaucrats, which has contributed to the further ballooning of the national debt. One such example is the now-abandoned plan of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. to bullheadedly spend P137.7 million for its 30th-anniversary celebration in 2025. Christmas demands that everyone exercise special sensitivity to the suffering in our midst by reaching out to those in sick bays and jails, the homeless, the working class, disaster victims, and those seeking justice in this season and the next. The head of one of Canada’s largest banks says newcomers need support from all corners as “people are turning a little sour” on . , chief executive of e, said there’s a “lot of illegal migration” going around in the world, but the people who legally come to Canada as international students, temporary foreign workers or permanent residents “play by the rules” and it’s important to “treat them by the rules” going forward. “Immigrants are the lifeblood of our country,” the son of a refugee said at a Toronto event organized by the University of Waterloo. “Immigrants come here with hopes and dreams. Immigrants don’t want to come here to be demonized, and what we need to do is continue to work on supporting those immigrants so that they actually feel fully Canadian.” Immigration has traditionally played a key role in Canada’s economy. But public support for newcomers has declined in recent years amidst , primarily due to a jump in the number of international students and temporary workers, who are referred to as temporary residents by the government. A clear majority of Canadians feel that there’s for the first time in 25 years, according to a national survey published in October by research group Environics Institute and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Diversity Institute. Policy changes by the federal government made it easier to bring in temporary residents during the past two years in order to fill nearly one million job vacancies following the pandemic. But with the number of vacancies declining and the unemployment rate on the rise, Ottawa has taken steps in the past year to decrease the number of temporary residents entering the country. Overall, it aims to have a net reduction of a million temporary residents in the next two years. The federal government is also reducing the number of new permanent residents, people who eventually become Canadian citizens, by about 21 per cent to 395,000 in 2025 and 380,000 in 2026, from about 500,000 currently. Economists don’t expect these changes to completely resolve Canada’s housing crisis, but they could make home ownership more attainable as the government tries to get more housing built and interest rates decline. Economists also believe the decisions could boost productivity despite slowing the country’s near-term economic growth due to lower consumer spending. Dodig said Canada’s struggling productivity levels could also be boosted by investing in technology and attracting foreign investors. He said large corporate sectors such as telecom, banking and oil and gas are achieving productivity gains due to investment in technologies, and the government should follow suit. “Forty per cent of the economy in Canada is government,” Dodig said. “I think health care is probably leading, education is probably second and government is probably third in terms of using technology to advance the economic productivity of our country.” The head of CIBC also said small and medium-sized companies tend to “sell out too soon because we don’t allow people to get scale, because the capital is not there or the resources aren’t there to continue to innovate.” Dodig said Canada has no choice but to “move quickly” and get investors to put capital to work in the “private sector and get going.” He added that Canada needs to “work really hard” to create the conditions necessary to be considered a good place to invest, given that the United States is likely going to get even more attractive. “We have no choice to wring our hands and think about what we should be doing,” he said. “You may actually have to throw a few things at it to make it work, because some of them will work and some of them won’t work, but sitting and thinking about it is the wrong answer.”Gurugram: The Haryana government on Tuesday approved the draft detailed project report for clean air and sustainable development in the state – a project which will be funded by the World Bank, officials said, adding that the Haryana governing committee led by chief secretary Vivek Joshi had approved the project. The project will be undertaken over a period of six years with ₹ 3,600 crore allocated to be spent on the first phase, they said. The project will adopt a phase-wise approach to address emissions in multiple sectors and in the first phase Gurugram and Faridabad will be the primary focus areas, targeting institutional strengthening, agriculture and household emissions, a government spokesperson said. “Priority clusters across the state will be identified to implement proposed interventions aimed at reducing pollution in agriculture and household sectors,” he added. The key interventions under the project, cover management of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the state plans to streamline collection systems, process legacy waste and enhance capacity through training and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Dust emissions will be mitigated through mechanised road sweeping, paving of unpaved roads, and increasing green cover, the authorities outlined. During the meeting held on Tuesday, Joshi stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination and timely execution to ensure the project’s success. The Haryana Clean Air Project for Sustainable Development is a significant step towards creating a sustainable future, improving air quality and setting a benchmark for other states to follow, he said. Under this project, the spokesperson said that emissions in Gurugram and Faridabad will be addressed through collaboration with road-owning and construction agencies, with measures such as efficient sweeping, road paving, and urban greening initiatives. In the transport sector, the project will promote the electrification of public buses, incentivize the adoption of electric three-wheelers, and expand charging infrastructure. Efforts will also focus on phasing out old, polluting vehicles through Automated Testing Stations (ATS). The spokesperson further said that industries will transition to cleaner fuels, such as PNG and CNG, supported by financial incentives for upgrading boilers. Cleaner technologies, including tunnel kilns for brick manufacturing and common boiler systems for textile clusters, will be piloted. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be supported in installing Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS).McDonald's S'pore has cheesy truffle burger, Maltesers McFlurry more from Nov. 28

It's almost time for Spotify Wrapped. When can you expect your 2024 recap?A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI filed a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would “debilitate OpenAI’s business” and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company and is based on “far-fetched” legal claims. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also sought to be CEO and in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Inc.,” a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives. This story has been updated to correct the name of the company registered in 2017. It was Open Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Inc., not Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.

Shares of communications platform Zoom Video Communications ( ZM -6.31% ) dropped on Tuesday after the technology company reported financial results for its fiscal third quarter of 2025. Everything in the quarter was actually fine. But going into the report, Zoom stock was at a two-year high and had risen over 50% in just a few months. It seems that financial results weren't quite inspiring enough to keep investors from taking recent profits off of the table. And that's why Zoom stock was down about 8% as of 2:45 p.m. ET. The beat and raise was modest for Zoom To reiterate, Zoom's financial results beat expectations on both the top and bottom lines. Moreover, management even raised its full-year guidance. Previously its guidance was for revenue of $4.630 billion to $4.640 billion, whereas now the revenue guidance is modestly higher at $4.656 billion to $4.661 billion. Similarly, Zoom's management expects full-year adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $5.41 to $5.43, whereas before it only expected adjusted EPS of $5.29 to $5.31. Beating and raising guidance is good. But consider that Zoom's Q3 revenue was only up 3.6% year over year and guidance is only modestly higher. That's why investors weren't more upbeat about the report. One thing to watch One thing is for sure: Zoom is a profitable business with tons of cash. The company has $7.7 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. And it's on pace to generate about $1.6 billion in full-year free cash flow . With this, it's looking to give back to shareholders with a total buyback plan of about $2 billion as of this writing. The problem is that Zoom already repurchased 4.4 million shares in Q3 and yet the outstanding share count still went up due to stock-based compensation . Buyback plans boost the share price when the number of shares go down. So investors should keep an eye on stock-based compensation from here because it is one of the issues that's preventing Zoom stock from performing better.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Penn State coach James Franklin has long campaigned for college football to have a commissioner oversee the sport because of NIL and transfer portal issues, among others. Sunday at the Fiesta Bowl’s Media Day, Franklin named who he would like to see fill that role. “I think (former Alabama coach) Nick Saban would be the obvious choice,” he said. “Nick will probably call me tonight and say, ‘Don’t do this.’ “But I think he’s the obvious choice, right? I think there are some other really good candidates out there. But that would be a very, very important step moving forward to come up with some solutions and do what’s best for our sport.” Franklin was responding to a question regarding Miami quarterback Cam Ward not playing the second half of the Hurricanes’ 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Last year, four Penn State players opted out of the Peach Bowl: Olu Fashanu, Chop Robinson, Kalen King and Johnny Dixon. Three others sat out the second half: Theo Johnson, Adisa Isaac and Caedan Wallace. “It’s a challenge that has been a challenge for a number of years,” Franklin said. “It’s obviously become even more challenging with some of the things with the calendar and with the transfer portal, the windows; and then on top of that, NIL. “It’s one of those things that we can’t just keep talking about. We have to come up with some solutions.” Franklin also suggested eliminating conference championship games and teams playing the same amount of conference games. “We should be doing what’s best for college football and the student-athletes,” he said. “Getting rid of the conference championship games would help with that. When you have a (College Football Playoff) committee sitting in a room trying to compare apples to apples, it’s hard to do that when not everybody is playing under the same model. “I also think it’s very, very important that everybody is playing the same number of conference games, whether that’s eight, nine or whatever. Then the committee can compare apples to apples.” Boise State arrived Saturday in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl wearing T-shirts that said, “Please Count Us Out.” The Broncos (12-1) are 11-point underdogs against Penn State for Tuesday night’s game. “I definitely didn’t plan on it becoming a shirt,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “(But) that’s what I believe in and that’s what Boise State has been built on.” Danielson mentioned the Broncos’ thrilling overtime win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl as why fans across the country have been drawn to the program. “We have been counted out before,” he said. “We have been counted out as a program. We have been counted out in games this year, and you thrive in that.” Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty was asked if anyone on the Penn State defense other than All-American end Abdul Carter jumped out to him. “I know the interior guys kind of get overlooked,” said Jeanty, the nation’s top rusher. “To me, (tackle) Zane Durant is a baller. We’ve been talking about him since we’ve been game-planning. He’s a great player. He’s going to give us a run for our money.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — De'Vondre Campbell's decision to quit on his team in the middle of a game overshadowed the bigger issues for the San Francisco 49ers. An offense that was one of the most dynamic in the NFL during a run to the Super Bowl last season has been just ordinary for most of 2024 and was downright bad in a 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night that just about ended San Francisco's playoff hopes. San Francisco (6-8) was held to its fewest yards (191) in a regular-season game in eight seasons under coach Kyle Shanahan and its fewest points since Shanahan's debut in 2017 on a rainy night that will be remembered mostly for Campbell walking off the field in the middle of the game with a towel draped over his head. The game also featured San Francisco going three-and-out on four drives as Brock Purdy struggled to connect with his receivers. Deebo Samuel dropped a potential touchdown pass after complaining earlier in the week about a lack of touches. Purdy then missed Ricky Pearsall on an underthrown deep shot in the fourth quarter before throwing an interception into the end zone that ended the Niners' comeback attempt. “I just feel like I had a lot of plays left out there that I could have made for our team,” Purdy said. “I thought the defense and special teams played so good. That’s what’s hurting me is I just feel like I failed the team. I could have been better for our offense and we could have put up more points.” Scoring has been an issue this season for the 49ers, who have been missing key playmakers like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk for much of the season. San Francisco is scoring 8.5 fewer points per game on offense than the Niners did through 14 games last season. Red-zone defense. After allowing touchdowns on 13 consecutive red-zone drives over the previous four games, the 49ers kept the Rams out of the end zone on all three drives that went inside the 20. Receivers. The 49ers failed to get much production from their wide receivers with Purdy going 6 for 20 for 63 yards with an INT and a 19.4 rating when targeting wideouts. Samuel had 16 yards on seven targets with the key drop. Jauan Jennings had two drops and was the target on the interception. Pearsall had one catch for 16 yards on four targets. LB Dre Greenlaw returned for the first time since tearing his left Achilles tendon in last season's Super Bowl. Greenlaw had eight tackles in the first half as he brought needed intensity and physical play that had been missing for much of the season. Campbell. The 49ers are deciding whether to waive or suspend Campbell, who lost his starting job when Greenlaw returned and then refused to play when he was needed. “His actions from the game just is not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said. “We’re working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we’ll handle the situation appropriately.” Greenlaw came out of the game feeling OK after leaving with soreness in his knee and Achilles tendon. He is day to day. ... S Ji’Ayir Brown (groin) and LB Dee Winters (neck) are also day to day. ... LT Trent Williams (ankle) is still trying to get back to play after missing the last four games. Shanahan said Williams' recovery has been "a lot slower than anticipated.” 0 — The Niners didn't reach the red zone once all game, with their deepest penetration into Rams territory being when they reached the 27 on a third-quarter field goal drive. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLYou may be heading out this weekend to do some last-minute holiday shopping and sticking to a budget could be top of mind. One way to save is by thrifting your gifts. Secondhand gifts can be a sustainable and affordable way to shop this holiday season. Shoppers at Goodwill in Woodlawn said they've been doing taking advantage of the savings for years. "I’m shopping for stocking stuffers for grandkids," said Annie McDonald. Mary Mulkey said she's been thrifting her Christmas gifts for the past 40 years. “Highly recommend it,” she said as she browsed the store for gifts. “I was looking for plants that my daughter cannot kill, because that's her issue.” Mulkey said she saves anywhere from 50% to 90% on gifts by buying secondhand. "At Goodwill, there's a lot of opportunities to find those treasures and those wonderful holiday decorations, gear and things like that, at really reasonable and affordable prices," said Bryan Smith, director of retail and marketing with Ohio Valley Goodwill. “Let's say you're going to go out and you're going to spend $100 on clothing at a store, right? If you spend $100 here with us, you're probably going to get three or four times more items.” I found a Nike Dri-Fit pullover on the racks for $9.99. The same sweatshirt (in a different color) was priced at $80 on Nike’s website. You can also find some gems in the toy department. A Fisher Price lion toy was at Goodwill for $4.99. The same toy is listed on Walmart’s website for $55. According to a report by the National Retail Federation, more younger consumers between the ages of 18 and 24 will shop thrift stores and resale shops this holiday season. "I think people are being more careful with their money,” Mulkey said. It's a magical time of year, but it also comes with some stress. "Your heating bill is up, rent is probably more expensive than it’s ever been,” Smith said. Fortunately, giving a meaningful gift doesn't have to cost a fortune. “Using a store like Goodwill to find something your loved ones will cherish at a price that's not going to set you back is huge," he said. Another way to save money, especially on tech gifts is to opt for refurbished, or buy an older model. It can also be meaningful and affordable to give a DIY gift, sometimes those mean the most. D ear Heloise: I wanted to write in concerning not using rugs and towels at animal shelters. I have to wonder what sort of “shelter” is being offered to dogs and cats where it gets so cold and wet that the cloth can freeze. Not to mention the possibility of the poor animal freezing to death! Are they saying these indoor animals are being kept outside? Or are their facilities not being properly heated and dry? This is shocking to me! I hope they can explain themselves. — Frank F., Ventura, California Frank, the letter was referring to feral cats and other outdoor animals. Shelter cats and dogs usually have a better situation than those that are born wild or mistreated by their owners. In my opinion, no animal should be kept outside in the winter if they have owners with a warm house. Sadly, there are too many abandoned cats and dogs that have no one to look after them, making their existence difficult and their lives short. Straw is the best solution to helping these animals stay warm, provided that there is plenty of straw to snuggle in for warmth inside of some type of enclosure. There are a variety of such houses for animals online, and most aren’t expensive. — Heloise Dear Heloise: I often use paper-towel rolls and toilet-paper rolls to keep artificial flower stems together. I also cut them lengthwise to put on gift-wrapping paper rolls. If the paper roll is too thin to keep a cardboard roll on, then I use a rubber band to secure the roll. Your readers have given me so much I can use. I thank you and thank them, too. — Jackie, Colorado Springs, Colorado Jackie, I like your cardboard roll ideas. Lately, I’ve received several letters stating that readers use the cardboard roll in paper towels and toilet paper to start a fire in their fireplace. Some also use a toilet roll of cardboard to gather a number of loose cords together. Others use a paper-towel roll to wrap tree lights around when putting them into storage. All of these are great ideas, as well. — Heloise Dear Heloise: Our glass pie plates wouldn’t get clean, so my husband had the successful idea to use a ceramic cooktop cleaner! The pie plates are sparkling now! — Connie B., Universal City, Texas Dear Heloise: My mom was never really happy with any gift I gave her. Since she relied on Social Security, money was tight, so I started to give her a goody box. I usually used an empty paper box and filled it with toiletries and products that I knew she used. I also included postage stamps and gift cards for car washes. She would love her goody box and looked forward to it every year. One year, my aunt was visiting from the old country at Christmas, so I made up a smaller box for her. I found out that she loved a certain brand of canned corn, so I included six cans. She was over the moon! It was also easy for me, as I would add things to the box all year long, making it easier on my time and budget. — Liz N., via email Send a money-saving or time-saving hint to Heloise@Heloise.com . But Carter’s years of volunteer presence with the organization in the U.S. and abroad, which was founded in Americus, just down the road from his hometown of Plains, was essential to Habitat’s success, Reckford said. The Carters first worked with Habitat in 1984, eight years after it was founded. At that point, Habitat had built fewer than 1,000 homes. Over the years, the Carter Work Project alone, a special program in Habitat that did construction drives in cities from Memphis, Tennessee to New York, has built, renovated or repaired more than 4,300 homes. The COVID-19 pandemic and the declining health of the Carters, both in their 90s, curtailed the yearly programs recently. Habitat has built more than 800,000 homes across the world. “Carter really put Habitat on the map,” Reckford said. “It was so unlikely to have a former U.S. president sleeping in a church basement and literally doing construction.” The couple also inspired large numbers of volunteers to join Habitat’s cause, starting with their first weeklong Carter Work Project in New York City’s Lower East Side, which attracted global media attention. Since 1984, they have worked alongside more than 100,000 volunteers at work sites in 14 countries. “The Carters have brought extraordinary international awareness to the great need for affordable housing and to Habitat for Humanity’s specific mission to be a part of the solution,” Reckford said. A skilled carpenter, Carter was always one to get his hands dirty. The former president was one of only two people to work on each of the first 35 annual Carter Work Projects, the other being his wife. “I’ve had the great privilege of being with them with heads of state around the world and also with some of the poorest people in the world, and I think the Carters are always the same in every setting,” Reckford said. “That’s an extraordinary mark of integrity.” In 2015, when Carter announced the growing threat and toll of cancer on his body, he didn’t allow the disease to stop him from working at Habitat builds. Carter received treatment for spots of melanoma found on his brain and planned to attend a build in Nepal that was eventually canceled because of a natural disaster and political unrest in the country. Instead, he worked at a Habitat build in Memphis in November 2015. He returned to Memphis a year and one day after his cancer announcement to host a Carter Work Project in August 2016. Reckford, who has been on several builds with the Carters, said Habitat volunteers were always eager to join the former president. “He worked hard, and he expected everyone else to work really hard. If he saw something he didn’t like, you would get that submarine commander blue-eyed gaze that you never want to get,” Reckford said lightheartedly. Carter’s involvement with Habitat also was an extension of his legacy as a peacemaker. During the 2006 Carter Work Project in Lonavala, India, Reckford said he saw cultural and religious differences dissipate. Two men from different faiths — one Muslim and one Hindu — and from different social castes were going to share one of the new duplexes. After participating in the weeklong build, one gentleman put his arm around his new neighbor and said despite their differences they were now brothers, Reckford said. “President Carter was such a great ambassador in breaking down barriers between people and building, both physical homes but building community in that process,” he said. Because of Carter’s involvement with Habitat, Reckford said millions of people worldwide are living in new or improved homes. “You have to admire the way he led his life, which was a life of service to others,” he said.
