At last, Wilson’s reputation gets dismantling it deservesAuthorities found Haddon, 76, dead in a second-floor bedroom on Friday morning after emergency dispatchers were notified about a person unconscious at the house in Solebury Township, Pennsylvania. A 76-year-old man police later identified as Walter J Blucas, of Erie, was hospitalised in critical condition. Responders detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property and township police said on Saturday that investigators determined that “a faulty flue and exhaust pipe on a gas heating system caused the carbon monoxide leak”. Two medics were taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide exposure and a police officer was treated at the scene. As a model, Haddon appeared on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Esquire in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1973 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She also appeared in about two dozen films from the 1970s to 1990s, according to IMDb, including 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway, starring John Cusack. Haddon left modelling after giving birth to her daughter, Ryan, in the mid-1970s, but then had to re-enter the workforce after her husband’s 1991 death. This time, she found the modelling industry far less friendly: “They said to me, ‘At 38, you’re not viable,'” Haddon told The New York Times in 2003. Working a menial job at an advertising agency, Haddon began reaching out to cosmetic companies, telling them there was a growing market to sell beauty products to aging baby boomers. She eventually landed a contract with Clairol, followed by Estee Lauder and then L’Oreal, for which she promoted the company’s anti-aging products for more than a decade. She also hosted beauty segments for CBS’s The Early Show. “I kept modelling, but in a different way,” she told The Times, “I became a spokesperson for my age.” In 2008, Haddon founded WomenOne, an organisation aimed at advancing educational opportunities for girls and women in marginalised communities, including Rwanda, Haiti and Jordan. Haddon was born in Toronto and began modelling as a teenager to pay for ballet classes – she began her career with the Canadian ballet company, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, according to her website. Haddon’s daughter, Ryan, said in a social media post that her mother was “everyone’s greatest champion. An inspiration to many”. “A pure heart. A rich inner life. Touching so many lives. A life well lived. Rest in Light, Mom,” she said.Even the reliable elder statesmen can’t help Pep Guardiola’s side move a game closer to a shock Champions League exitapp betfred

LUKE LITTLER turned on the style on a shocking night when several world darts champions bombed out of Butlin’s. Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and Stephen Bunting all crashed out of the first round of the Players Championship Finals on day one. He passed £1m in prize money after beating Martin Lukeman 16-3 in the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday. But The Nuke – the overwhelming favourite for next month’s World Championship – showed his class with a 6-0 obliteration of Rob Cross in Minehead. Littler, 17, sensationally averaged 112.73 – the second-highest average in the tournament’s history – and nailed six of his 10 checkouts, five days after his Grand Slam of Darts success. The Warrington teen said: “It’s always good to start any major or competition well. “In my first game of the Grand Slam, I sent out a real statement, that I am here to win. I’m very happy to get off the mark again here. “My performance is good and my confidence is high. My hopes are very high for the Worlds. But I have to focus on Minehead first. “Recent performances have shown why I should be favourite. On recent form, people might say that I’m the best in the world.” What Littler is doing this season is making many longstanding players seem old and staid – and his consistency is frightening. BEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKER S Where everything he touches finds the right bed, in comparison Wright’s woeful form on TV continues – as he was smashed 6-1 by Daryl Gurney in round one. The Scotsman, 54, might be a two-time world champion but he heads to Ally Pally with little confidence that he can have a long run in that competition. Former champion of the world Price was shocked 6-4 by French ace Thibault Tricole. It is another setback for The Iceman, 39, who failed to qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts and finished seventh in the Premier League. Van Gerwen, 35, was extremely poor as he was humbled 6-1 by Ian White in his first match. Bunting’s status as the No.2 seed mattered little as he lost 6-2 to Belgian outsider Mario Vandenbogaerde. At least Luke Humphries, the defending champion, did not join the casualty list as he knocked out Giant German Gabriel Clemens 6-2. Meanwhile, darts rookie Dom Taylor was booted out of the tournament after he failed a drugs test. The 26-year-old world No. 80 was set to make his debut appearance with a glamour first-round tie against former world champion Michael Smith , 34, last night. But hours before his contest, the Darts Regulation Authority announced it had suspended Taylor for a suspected doping offence. Known as The Tower , he was tested at a recent PDC Pro Tour event and returned a positive sample for a banned substance. The DRA have refused to say if the Bristol thrower had taken a performance-enhancing drug or if it was a result of recreational use.Firing tranquiliser darts on the female tiger that is on the prowl in West Bengal’s Jangalmahal region has failed to capture Zeenat . On Saturday, the tigress was located in Bankura district, the third district of southern Bengal since it strayed to West Bengal after running away from Similipal National Park in neighbouring Odisha on December 10. The three-year-old stray wild cat has been changing her location every few days and has kept the West Bengal Forest department on the edge ever since she entered the State from Jharkhand on December 19. Multiple attempts to catch Zeenat have failed as she has reportedly killed over three domestic goats and their carcasses were found in the nearby jungles. She was first spotted in Jhargram district, and then travelled to Bandwan area of Purulia district on Thursday. She moved to Purulia’s Dangardi forests in Manbazar for only a day. She was in Purulia’s Bandwan for over five days. Now, she is in the Ranibandh area of Bankura according to Forest department officials from Saturday. Speaking to The Hindu , Debal Roy, Chief Wildlife Warden, said: “We made an attempt to tranquilise her at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, but that failed. Our teams are in constant watch. We are trying our best and setting up cages in multiple locations. We are using both active and passive methods to get a hold of her.” Mr. Roy also mentioned that there have been no reports of any locals being injured or attacked by the tigress to date even as the big cat remains on the move across three districts of southern Bengal. Officials have set up fencing across multiple locations to avoid any conflict. The Forest department has also found multiple paw prints of Zeenat in Purulia and Bankura’s forests. According to Forest officials, they now have three teams on constant watch in Bankura’s Ranibandh area, where the tigress was last sited. They are using radio trackers to track her movements at the moment. They are employing modern technology, such as drones with thermal imaging, night vision devices, monitoring teams, and even using goats as bait to manage the situation and either capture the tigress or guide her back along the path she entered. But she has managed to escape all the traps till now, causing panic among locals as these are small patches of forests that have human settlements in multiple pockets of the district. Forest department officials are continuously urging locals in the area to avoid venturing into the forests and to remain indoors to ensure safety. Zeenat was relocated to Similipal from Maharashtra’s Tadoba to bolster Odisha’s tiger population. Heavily dependent on the Centre for grants, the MC has been going through its worst-ever financial crisis, struggling to even pay its staff the monthly salary. In this situation, projects needed for the city's betterment and upgradation have suffered significantly. The MC witnessed its first election in 1996 with a house comprising 20 councillors. It was believed that having elected representatives would effectively address the people's issues, tackle challenges collectively, and ensure the city's development aligned with the residents' needs. The MC house has grown, accommodating 35 elected councillors and nine nominated councillors, besides the local MP who has a vote as an ex-officio member. DIVIDED HOUSE The current MC (2022-2026), which saw a fractured mandate during the elections, has been reduced to a political battlefield, where elected representatives hit a new low each time the MC house holds its meeting. The assembly hall has seen frequent ugly scenes. The quality of debates has plummeted, and incidents of manhandling among councillors, the presence of marshals, and councillors being dragged out of the hall have become common. These troubling developments have raised serious questions about the overall existence and role of the MC. BLOT ON MC'S HISTORY A major blot on the city's only public body was witnessed in January during the mayoral elections, where ballot tampering by none other than the returning officer — Anil Masih, a nominated councillor — was captured on CCTV cameras. For the first time, the Supreme Court overturned the mayoral election results. During this term, Chandigarh police personnel were seen inside the assembly hall to prevent councillors from ‘hijacking' the mayor's chair. ‘MC COMPLETELY POLITICISED NOW' Harjinder Kaur, a two-time former Mayor of Chandigarh MC and elected municipal councillor in the first MC (1996-2000), termed the current scenario of the MC as unfortunate and stressed the need for a serious debate on the existence and role of the MC in a fresh manner. "It is unfortunate that politics have overpowered the idea of the real MC, which came into existence for the development of the city and resolving public issues. The agenda of serving the people has been completely sidelined, and there is no vision at all to develop the city. All sorts of corruption are persisting in the MC now, which is very painful, and the MC is struggling towards self-sustainability. Earlier, the nominated councillors were of very high esteem and renowned personalities, holding the utmost qualifications, and they used to be very high-level people," she told TOI. She said, "The MC is completely politicised now, which should not happen. This is our city, and thus now it is a topic of high debate about the existence, role, and functioning of the MC. There is no vision, no brainstorming-like affairs in the MC now, and most crucially, the value system and honesty. Earlier, the elected municipal councillors had personal reputations, and they used to work together with the Punjab governor and the UT administrator for the development of the city. They used to bring ideas and subsequently worked on those." ONE-YEAR TERM INADEQUATE: EX-MAYORS Almost all political parties agree that a one-year term for the Chandigarh MC mayor is too short for any mayor to perform effectively. Due to such a brief period, the mayor's work remains very limited. Since the central govt holds the key role in this matter, the top brass of the Chandigarh BJP recently discussed this issue again with the party's leadership. However, things don't seem feasible, mainly due to the reservation criteria for the mayor's post, divided over five years, comprising seats for general, women, and SC categories. TOI spoke to previous mayors of the city to understand the hurdles in a one-year mayor's term and related aspects. The mayor's term should be for five years, and if not possible, then at least for two and a half years. In Chandigarh, by the time the mayor understands the overall workings and functions of the MC, their tenure ends. Moreover, the mayor doesn't have any power in Chandigarh MC, and without empowering the mayor administratively, things won't work in the political arena at all. Thus, the mayor should have the power to write ACRs and should also be a permanent member of the decision-making body of the Chandigarh administration. - Ravinder Pal Singh, former mayor For a newly elected person, it is very difficult to completely understand and effectively run the MC in a one-year tenure. The one-year term of the Chandigarh mayor is just like a rubber stamp. The resolution for the mayor's five-year term, as well as a mayor-in-council for the city, was passed in the MC's house in the past to strengthen the mayor. As Chandigarh is governed through the Punjab Municipal Act, which is extended to UT, Chandigarh, the mayor's term should also be on the lines of Punjab, which is five years. - Ravikant Sharma, former mayor A mayor must get sufficient time to work. It was seen numerous times that a person comes but fails to fulfil their ideas in such a short period of one year, and their ideas don't get pushed by the new mayor the next year. There is a dire need to extend the mayor's term to five years, and there should be a direct election of the mayor. Moreover, the Chandigarh administration must take the mayor into confidence while making crucial decisions for Chandigarh, and most importantly, the mayor should have the power to write ACRs of the officers. - Kamlesh, former mayor Whichever party the mayor comes from, they don't get proper time to work in the MC, and thus their term should be extended. In such a short term of one year, the mayor cannot complete their own crucial projects or implement their ideas. The mayor must have independent powers to run the MC. Moreover, there should be a mayor-in-council in Chandigarh, and we raised this issue in the past, which is a major requirement in Chandigarh, mainly due to its current political structure. Besides that, the mayor must have the power to write ACRs of the officers. - Asha Jaswal, former mayor Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India . The UK will scrap five warships, dozens of military helicopters and a fleet of drones to save money despite growing threats from Russia and a war raging in Europe. John Healey, the defence secretary, announced the dramatic move in parliament on Wednesday, saying it would save up to half a billion pounds over the next five years. The defence secretary described the equipment being axed as "outdated" and said the "common sense" decision to retire them was long overdue. Ukraine war latest: Follow live He signalled the decision was part of a plan to restructure and modernise the armed forces, which have already been significantly reduced in size following decades of cost-saving cuts, with new capabilities due to come online to replace the gaps. "We face increasing global threats," Mr Healey said in a written statement that was released at the same time as he addressed MPs. "War in Europe, growing Russian aggression, conflict in the Middle East and technology changing the nature of warfare. As a result, defence needs increased resilience and readiness for the future." At the same time, though, he said the defence budget faced "serious financial pressures". "To ensure that Britain is kept secure at home and strong abroad in a changing world, defence needs to make changes too. Difficult decisions are required," he said. Gaetz told a conservative radio host: “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch.” A staunch Trump ally and leader of a hard-right faction in the House, Gaetz resigned his seat shortly after being picked by the president-elect to lead the Department of Justice. But after eight days of scrutiny and growing uncertainty that he would be able to get through the US Senate's confirmation process, he withdrew his nomination on Thursday. Prior to being chosen by Trump to serve as America's top law enforcement official, Gaetz won re-election in his House district in north-west Florida. That meant, despite his resignation, he could have chosen to retake his seat when a new Congress is formed in January. But he told Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and radio host, that he would not return to the House. “There are a number of fantastic Floridians who stepped up to run for my seat, people who have inspired with their heroism, with their public service,” Gaetz said. “And I’m actually excited to see north-west Florida go to new heights and have great representation. “I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress,” he said. Gaetz, 42, has been the subject of allegations of human trafficking, illegal drug use and paying for sex, including with a 17-year-old. He denies the allegations, and a Department of Justice investigation did not result in any criminal charges. However, a separate House of Representative ethics investigation was ongoing until he resigned from the chamber. On Wednesday the House ethics committee deadlocked on a vote on whether to release its report on Gaetz. House ethics investigations generally end if a representative resigns or is voted out of their seat. If Gaetz had chosen to rejoin the House, however, he may have faced having the investigation re-opened. In recent days, US media outlets have reported that Gaetz made electronic payments to women using the Venmo app, allegedly in exchange for sex. Gaetz said: “If the things that the House Ethics report [said] were true, I would be under indictment and probably in a prison cell. “But of course, they're false, because when you test them against other records, when you test them against other testimony, it all falls apart very quickly.” The BBC News has not confirmed the veracity of the report or the allegations that it contains. Trump selected Gaetz to serve as attorney general for his desire to make changes at the justice department - which had also investigated the Florida congressman for several years. The president-elect claims he has been unfairly treated by the US legal establishment and said that Gaetz would end the “weaponization” of the judicial system. But critics charged that Gaetz would use his post to pursue Trump's personal vendettas. He also faced scepticism from moderate Republican senators and Democrats. The fact that many members of his own party openly dislike Gaetz - due in part to his successful effort in ousting Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy in 2023 among other political stunts - made his pathway to confirmation even more difficult. In his place, Trump has said he intends to nominate former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as attorney general. On Friday, Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis set out the timeline for the special election to fill the vacancy in the state’s 1st district, where Gaetz won two-thirds of the vote in the election earlier this month. Party primaries will be held on 28 January with the general election held on 1 April 2025. At least six Republicans and one Democrat have said they will enter the race, according to local news reports.

CJ Hyland finished with nine points and four assists. Both teams next play Saturday. South Carolina Upstate visits South Carolina and Western Carolinaplays UNC Asheville on the road. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .Abortion has become slightly more common despite bans or deep restrictions in most Republican-controlled states, and the legal and political fights over its future are not over yet. It's now been two and a half years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and opened the door for states to implement bans. The policies and their impact have been in flux ever since the ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Here's a look at data on where things stand: Overturning Roe and enforcing abortion bans has changed how woman obtain abortions in the U.S. But one thing it hasn't done is put a dent in the number of abortions being obtained. There have been slightly more monthly abortions across the country recently than there were in the months leading up to the June 2022 ruling, even as the number in states with bans dropped to near zero. “Abortion bans don’t actually prevent abortions from happening,” said Ushma Upadhyay, a public health social scientist at the University of California San Francisco. But, she said, they do change care. For women in some states, there are major obstacles to getting abortions — and advocates say that low-income, minority and immigrant women are least likely to be able to get them when they want. For those living in states with bans, the ways to access abortion are through travel or abortion pills. As the bans swept in, abortion pills became a bigger part of the equation. They were involved in about half the abortions before Dobbs. More recently, it’s been closer to two-thirds of them, according to research by the Guttmacher Institute. The uptick of that kind of abortion, usually involving a combination of two drugs, was underway before the ruling. But now, it's become more common for pill prescriptions to be made by telehealth. By the summer of 2024, about 1 in 10 abortions was via pills prescribed via telehealth to patients in states where abortion is banned. As a result, the pills are now at the center of battles over abortion access. This month, Texas sued a New York doctor for prescribing pills to a Texas woman via telemedicine. There's also an effort by Idaho, Kansas and Missouri to roll back their federal approvals and treat them as “controlled dangerous substances,” and a push for the federal government to start enforcing a 19th-century federal law to ban mailing them. Clinics have closed or halted abortions in states with bans. But a network of efforts to get women seeking abortions to places where they're legal has strengthened and travel for abortion is now common. The Guttmacher Institute found that more than twice as many Texas residents obtained abortion in 2023 in New Mexico as New Mexico residents did. And as many Texans received them in Kansas as Kansans. Abortion funds, which benefitted from “rage giving” in 2022, have helped pay the costs for many abortion-seekers. But some funds have had to cap how much they can give . Since the downfall of Roe, the actions of lawmakers and courts have kept shifting where abortion is legal and under what conditions. Here's where it stands now: Florida, the nation’s third most-populous state, began enforcing a ban on abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy on May 1. That immediately changed the state from one that was a refuge for other Southerners seeking abortion to an exporter of people looking for them. There were about 30% fewer abortions there in May compared with the average for the first three months of the year. And in June, there were 35% fewer. While the ban is not unique, the impact is especially large. The average driving time from Florida to a facility in North Carolina where abortion is available for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is more than nine hours, according to data maintained by Caitlin Myers, a Middlebury College economics professor. The bans have meant clinics closed or stopped offering abortions in some states. But some states where abortion remains legal until viability – generally considered to be sometime past 21 weeks of pregnancy , though there’s no fixed time for it – have seen clinics open and expand . Illinois, Kansas and New Mexico are among the states with new clinics. There were 799 publicly identifiable abortion providers in the U.S. in May 2022, the month before the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade. And by this November, it was 792, according to a tally by Myers, who is collecting data on abortion providers. But Myers says some hospitals that always provided some abortions have begun advertising it. So they’re now in the count of clinics – even though they might provide few of them. How hospitals handle pregnancy complications , especially those that threaten the lives of the women, has emerged as a major issue since Roe was overturned. President Joe Biden's administration says hospitals must offer abortions when they're needed to prevent organ loss, hemorrhage or deadly infections, even in states with bans. Texas is challenging the administration’s policy and the U.S. Supreme Court this year declined to take it up after the Biden administration sued Idaho. More than 100 pregnant women seeking help in emergency rooms and were turned away or left unstable since 2022, The Associated Press found in an analysis of federal hospital investigative records. Among the complaints were a woman who miscarried in the lobby restroom of Texas emergency room after staff refused to see her and a woman who gave birth in a car after a North Carolina hospital couldn't offer an ultrasound. The baby later died. “It is increasingly less safe to be pregnant and seeking emergency care in an emergency department,” Dara Kass, an emergency medicine doctor and former U.S. Health and Human Services official told the AP earlier this year. Since Roe was overturned, there have been 18 reproductive rights-related statewide ballot questions. Abortion rights advocates have prevailed on 14 of them and lost on four. In the 2024 election , they amended the constitutions in five states to add the right to abortion. Such measures failed in three states: In Florida, where it required 60% support; in Nebraska, which had competing abortion ballot measures; and in South Dakota, where most national abortion rights groups did support the measure. AP VoteCast data found that more than three-fifths of voters in 2024 supported abortion being legal in all or most cases – a slight uptick from 2020. The support came even as voters supported Republicans to control the White House and both houses of Congress. Associated Press writers Linley Sanders, Amanda Seitz and Laura Ungar contributed to this article.PERKIOMEN – Through the first eight minutes of Friday night’s game with North Penn, the Perkiomen Valley boys basketball team posted a shutout, the Vikings ending the opening quarter with a 10-0 lead. “We knew eventually something’s going to go in the hoop,” Perk Valley senior Jakob Harken said. “It’s not like they’re going to miss every shot all game.” The Knights finally broke through when JC Wood collected the first two baskets of the second period but host PV kept North Penn at bay and went into halftime of the Perk Valley Holiday Shootout contest with a 12-point advantage. NoneAs the calendar year draws to a close, the window for tax-saving opportunities narrows. However, it’s not too late to implement strategies that could lower your tax bill. By focusing on charitable contributions, health savings accounts (HSAs), and 529 plans, you can make a significant impact on your finances before Dec. 31. For those living in Indiana and some other states, a unique 529 plan tax credit further enhances the benefits. Charitable contributions are a valuable tool for reducing your tax liability while supporting causes you care about. If you itemize deductions, donations to qualified charitable organizations are tax-deductible. You can contribute cash, appreciated securities, or other assets, and each type of donation offers distinct benefits. Cash donations are deductible up to 60% of your adjusted gross income, while donating appreciated stock allows you to avoid capital gains taxes on the asset’s growth and get up to a 30% deduction on taxes. Additionally, if you are 701⁄2 or older, consider making a qualified charitable distribution directly from your IRA. QCDs allow you to donate up to $100,000 annually without including the amount in your taxable income, which can also satisfy your required minimum distribution. Another essential tax-advantaged account to consider is a health savings account. HSAs provide a triple tax advantage: contributions are tax-deductible, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free. For 2024, individuals can contribute up to $4,150, while families can contribute up to $8,300. Those aged 55 and older can add an additional $1,000 as a catch-up contribution. If you’re covered by a high-deductible health plan but haven’t yet maxed out your HSA contributions, doing so before the end of the year can lower your taxable income while building a reserve for future health care costs. Additionally, HSAs are unique in that the funds roll over year after year, unlike flexible spending accounts, making them an excellent tool for long-term financial planning. For Indiana residents, contributing to a 529 College Savings Plan before the end of the year can yield substantial state tax benefits. Indiana offers a 20% tax credit on contributions up to $7,500 per year, providing a maximum credit of $1,500. This means that every dollar you contribute up to the limit not only grows tax-free for educational expenses, but also directly reduces your state tax liability. These plans can be used for a wide range of education-related costs, including tuition, fees, books, and even K-12 expenses in some cases. Parents, grandparents, and others who wish to support a child’s education should consider taking advantage of this incentive. To maximize this benefit, make your contributions before Dec. 31. Acting on these strategies now can yield meaningful tax savings while setting the stage for long-term financial success. Consider making charitable contributions, maximizing your HSA contributions, and taking full advantage of Indiana’s generous 529 plan tax credit if you’re eligible. These proactive steps not only reduce your immediate tax burden but also help secure your financial future. As always, consult with a tax advisor or financial planner to ensure these moves align with your specific goals and circumstances. Taking action today can pave the way for smoother tax filing and greater peace of mind tomorrow.
