Less than two months ago, they had thoughts of competing for a playoff spot. Rooke quarterback Caleb Williams was flying high and had the offense humming. Then one Hail Mary in Washington happened and everything came tumbling down. After the end of the Commanders game, everything changed. Suddenly the offense could not move the ball. The Bears scored just 27 points in their next three games. That led to the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Thomas Brown, the passing game coordinator, took over for Waldron and the offense looked much better. However, late-game decisions cost the Chicago Bears wins in three straight games. After a particularly bad outcome against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, the players had enough and revolted. The Bears had to fire head coach Matt Eberflus. Now the Chicago Bears are searching for a new head coach for the fifth time since 2012. We all hope they finally get it right this time. However, people are not holding their breath expecting it. At this point, it is a matter of seeing it happen before believing it. We saw the difference between a team with good coaching and one that is in disarray. Brown made his debut as Chicago Bears head coach last week against the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners were struggling like the Bears were, losing three consecutive games. Additionally, they were hit hard with injuries. A great deal of their key starters were on injured reserve or ruled out. San Francisco had Kyle Shanahan, however. He is one of the best coaches in the NFL. He was able to still come up with a game plan. The Chicago Bears were a mess and it showed. The Niners cruised to an easy blowout victory, 38-13. Chicago got a closeup view of what an elite head coach looks like. There is speculation that the Chicago Bears could trade for Shanahan. That would be a home run cut. That may not be feasible for a number of reasons, though. San Francisco might not want to let him leave. It might take a huge compensation packet to entice the Niners to let him go. Furthermore, the Chicago Bears need their draft picks. They have shown that they still have plenty of holes to fill before becoming a playoff contender. They are not as bad as their record indicates but are not as good as they thought they were when the season started. Perhaps finding a Shanahan disciple could be the answer for the Chicago Bears head coaching troubles. Enter Bobby Slowik. Bobby Slowik Profile Age: 37 Coaching Experience: Washington Defensive Assistant 2011-2013; San Francisco 49ers Defensive Quality Control/Offensive Assistant/Passing Game Specialist 2017-2022; Houston Texans Offensive Coordinator 2023-2024 NFL Head Coaching Experience? No One of the requirements that many fans want in the new head coach is an offensive minded personality. However, it would be better if they had someone who was well-rounded instead. Slowik has worked a lot on the defensive side of the ball so he has a good understanding of how that unit should operate. Slowik has a long history working with Shanahan. He started working under him with Washington from 2011-2013. He then reunited with him in San Francisco. He has a great understanding of what Shanahan’s system entails. He will, of course, add his own wrinkles, though. While Slowik is just 37 yards old, that could be a positive. He is young enough to relate well with with the players. Remember, Shanahan was just 38 when he took over as Niners head coach. Slowik also has experience working with a young highly-talented quarterback. He was instrumental in C.J. Stroud ‘s phenomenal rookie season. He tailored his system to Stroud’s skill set. Stroud led the Texans to a 10-7 record, the AFC South title, and a victory in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. He could do the same with Williams. Slowik’s experience on defense and his ability to work with Stroud gives him an advantage over many other candidates. USA Today had an article recently explaining just that. Slowik’s coaching background on the defensive side also gives him an inside track to a lot of schematic advantages over other candidates. Then there’s the whole “developing Stroud into a star” thing that should entice any franchise with a promising quarterback prospect on staff. Stroud has not been as great in his second campaign but the Houston offense has actually gotten a little bit better. The Texans ranked 13th in points in 2023. This season, they rank 11th. The result so far is a record of 8-5 and a two-game lead in their division with four games remaining in the season. Slowik quickly became a hot commodity last offseason during the head coaching cycle. He interviewed with the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans. He did not receive a job offer, probably because those teams worried that he could be a one-year wonder. Slowik is still succeeding in his second season so he could be a popular candidate this offseason. Perhaps he could be hired, maybe by the Chicago Bears. Colorado, as part of its multi-pronged approach to eliminate 90% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, is planning to address those landfill emissions next year with rules that could require operators to install new equipment to curb the amount of methane they release and to increase monitoring technology to better track just how much is being generated. The state’s is expected to create the new rules in August, which would place Colorado among the nation’s first states to enact more stringent regulations on landfills than the . The state kicked off its efforts last week with the first of three public hearings to explain why environmental leaders want to regulate landfill emissions of methane, a far more potent pollutant than carbon dioxide, and how they would propose doing so. Along with reducing air pollution, the methane reduction also would benefit communities in Colorado that live near landfills, where residents often are Latino, Black or Indigenous and earn less money than the average household. Finally, reducing methane would also , which is in severe violation of federal ozone standards. “Methane is an incredibly potent climate pollutant and reducing methane emissions from landfills is a very cost-effective climate action solution,” said Suzanne Jones, executive director of , a nonprofit recycler in Boulder. “And it’s an opportunity for Colorado to use its expertise on methane monitoring of oil and gas operations to apply to landfills as a model for the rest of the country.” There are 51 active landfills in Colorado, and some are owned and operated by cities and counties, while others are owned by private companies. It’s unclear how many will be impacted by the new methane reduction regulations, since regulators have not finalized their proposal that would determine how big of a polluter a landfill would need to be to fall under the new rules. Landfills are the third-largest source of methane emissions behind oil and gas production and livestock farming in the United States. Colorado’s landfills released 1.45 million metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2020, the most current data available from the . That’s 1% of all the greenhouse gas emissions in the state, Tim Taylor, a supervisor in the department’s climate change program, said during last week’s public hearing. However, environmentalists and even federal and state regulators believe the amount of methane leaking from landfills could be much greater. In June, using satellite data estimated that landfills in the U.S. are releasing 50% more methane than the EPA reports, and a subset of 70 high-emitting landfills found emissions were 77% higher on median than what was reported to the EPA. Only 21 of Colorado’s landfills are large enough to report their methane emissions to the EPA under current regulations, but they account for 76% of the industrial methane sources in the state, ahead of mining, manufacturing and food processing, according to a report released this month by and , a coalition of health care professionals fighting climate change. Landfills are “living masses of waste” where food scraps, discarded paper products and landscaping material break down over the years and release methane along with other chemicals such as benzene and toluene, said Katherine Blauvelt, circular economy director at Industrious Labs, a group focused on reducing industry’s impact on climate change. “Colorado landfills are responsible for the equivalent of 1 million cars on the road,” Blauvelt said. “Every little bit of methane you don’t put in the atmosphere has a positive impact. The way you do that is through basic regulations. In Colorado, it’s like we are on Windows 2000 technology.” The EPA already requires larger landfills to control and report emissions, but Colorado is planning to expand those requirements to smaller landfills, increasing the number that will be regulated, Taylor said. Under the EPA’s requirements, landfills are regulated based on their designed capacity, but Colorado will order landfills to follow the new rules based on the amount of waste they already have in place, he said. Landfills that fall under the threshold Colorado sets will be required to install gas collection and control systems to capture the methane, Taylor said. Then the operator would have choices: Install an enclosed combustion flare so methane is burned off and turned into carbon dioxide, which is a less potent pollutant, or convert the methane into a natural gas that can be used in the electrical grid, Taylor said. The state also is considering a requirement for landfills to use biofilters or biocovers to reduce methane emissions. “Biocovers and biofilters are passive methods for reducing landfill emissions because they rely on naturally occurring microbes or methane-eating bacteria to convert methane to carbon dioxide or water without the need for any external energy input or active intervention,” Taylor said. Environmentalists also are pushing the state for more monitoring of landfills, including the use of drones and satellite imagery to better detect leaks that otherwise might be unseen because of looser monitoring requirements. Employees at landfills that already monitor emissions do so once a quarter by walking the property with detection devices, Blauvelt said. Air flights conducted to look for methane leaks from the sky have detected unreported plumes at multiple Colorado landfills, including the Tower Landfill in Commerce City, the Larimer County Landfill in Fort Collins and the North Weld Landfill in Ault, according to the Industrious Labs report. At the Tower Landfill, there were nine large methane plumes detected by flights in September 2023 and August 2024. Those plumes were so large that they would have been considered super emitters by the EPA’s standards for the oil and gas industry, the report said. The landfill, which is owned and operated by , detected more than 20 instances that went over federal limits for methane emissions during a quarterly inspection in August. But “a landfill can leak methane more than quarterly,” the report said. Colorado received a federal grant for aerial monitoring of methane emissions in the state and environmentalists hope it will be applied to regulating landfills, Blauvelt said. “This is about common sense improvements based on what we know about methane,” she said. Melissa Quillard, a Republic Services spokeswoman, said the August 2024 plume at Tower Landfill happened as the company was constructing a new landfill cell and had multiple pieces of excavation equipment running. That work temporarily exposed waste so that engineered liners and additional infrastructure could be installed, she said. Quillard’s email did not address the September 2023 plume. While Republic Services does not comment on pending rule changes, Quillard noted that gas coming from landfills fluctuates throughout the day based on the age and composition of waste, weather, construction and how the trash is being moved around the landfill. Any monitoring and reporting techniques would need to take into account those dynamics, she said in a statement emailed to The Denver Post. Satellites and drones capture a moment in time and do not follow the EPA’s existing reporting model or provide a representative assessment of a landfill’s overall emissions, she said. Republic Services owns three landfills in metro Denver, and the company is building a new organic waste facility in the area. Two of the local sites are in the early stages of developing projects that will convert methane to usable natural gas. And the company already uses capture-and-control systems to burn off methane, Quillard said. One thing that will not be addressed as the landfill methane emissions rule is created is how to lower the amount of waste sent to landfills through expanded composting and recycling. That’s because this rule will be created by the Air Quality Control Commission, a body that can only set air pollution policies. Brian Loma, the hazardous waste reduction advocate for , hopes the state health department’s will push for improved composting and recycling at the same time the air quality commission takes up proposed methane rules. GreenLatinos supports more regulation of landfills because so many Latinos live within a mile of trash dumps, forcing them to breathe dirtier air. “The No. 1 way to reduce methane emissions is to not put organic material in the landfill,” Loma said. Two more public hearings about Colorado’s proposed rules to reduce methane emissions from landfills are scheduled in early 2025. (AP) — A judge dismissed charges Tuesday against two election workers in suburban Detroit who were accused of taking steps that allowed four people to vote twice in the summer primary election. Judge Joseph Oster said there wasn’t sufficient evidence to send the two women to trial. Felony charges against the part-time election workers in St. Clair Shores were announced at an October news conference by Attorney General Dana Nessel. “There’s a difference between mistakes, overlooking, maybe even incompetence, and committing a crime,” Oster said. The women, ages 73 and 42, hugged each other outside court. The case is being closely watched by officials in other Michigan communities who rely on short-term election staff. “We hope the dismissal of these charges is a message to other people who may volunteer to do their civic duty and work a city election that they don’t have to be afraid to do it,” defense attorney Robert Ihrie said. Nessel said four people who had already cast absentee ballots for the Aug. 6 primary also showed up to vote in St. Clair Shores on that day. In Michigan, it’s not possible on Election Day to cancel an already processed absentee ballot and then vote in person. The US first started to address the need for air refueling by modifying aging B-29 and B-50 bombers into tankers. The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter was a long-range heavy military cargo aircraft developed from the B-29 and B-50 bombers (development of the C-97 started in 1942). The Boeing YC-97 first flew late in World War II and entered service in 1947 after the war's end. Soon a tanker variant of the C-97 was developed and the KC-97 Stratofreighter came into service in 1951. The KC-97 remained in front-line service until 1973 (but continued to serve until the end of the decade with the Guard and Reserves). Incidentally, modern, more powerful turboprop aircraft like the Airbus A400M Atlas and the KC-130J Super Hercules are able to refuel jet aircraft. The news comes as the FASF is divesting its fleet of KC-135s to replace them with Airbus A330-based tankers. The new jet powered tanker could easily keep up with the latest fighters, bombers and other aircraft in the operational fleet." - Air Mobility Command With around 377 KC-135 Stratotankers remaining in service, these are the primary tankers in US service. They have also been exported to many US allies and partners around the world (although many are being replaced by the Airbus A330 MRTT or the Boeing KC-46A Pegasus). KC-10 Extenders The KC-10 Extender was built on the widebody McDonnell Douglass DC-10 jetliner (the DC-10 entered service in 1971). The three-engined DC-10 was selected over the Lockheed C-5, the Lockheed, L-1011, and the Boeing 747 in 1977 (which were also bidding for the contract). The first KC-10 flew in 1980 and soon became a critical part of the Air Force's aerial tanker fleet . However, the extensions also reduced the airframe's lifespan, and the last of the KC-10 Extenders was retired in 2024 . The KC-10 Extender was the result of the Air Force wanting a longer range and great fuel capacity aircraft to supplement the KC-135 Stratotanker. The KC-46A Pegasus is the Air Force's newest tanker and is based on the Boeing 767 airliner. KC-46A Pegasus The latest Air Force tanker is the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus - built on the Boeing 767 (although the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 were also considered during the selection process). After some selection debacles (including, at one point, selecting the Airbus A330), the Air Force selected Boeing's 767 in 2011 as the basis for its clean-sheet tanker. The KC-46A first flew in 2015 and was delivered to the Air Force in 2019. Internationally, the KC-46 Pegasus has also been ordered by Japan (six tankers) and Israel (four tankers) to replace their aging fleets. "The KC-46A delivers more fuel at all ranges and from shorter runways than the KC-135 aircraft it’s replacing — while utilizing less ramp space than competing tankers — ensuring mission reach from forward and austere airfields." - Boeing Around 93 have so far been delivered and the Air Force plans to acquire around 179 of them to partially replace the aging fleet of KC-135 Stratotankers. The KC-46 is able to carry a combination of over 210,000 lbs of fuel, and 65,000 lbs of cargo, 58 patients, or 114 passengers. KC-46A Pegasus tankers are being progressively upgraded over time making them capable of more missions. For example, the KC-46 has data links and Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) integration (which connects the aircraft with other platforms providing tactical situational awareness and real-time information). With three-quarters of the world's tanker fleet, the USAF dominates the list of aerial tanker fleets. Future of Air Force tankers The KC-46 Pegasus may prove to be the last conventional tube-based tanker built from a passenger airliner. The Air Force foresees different requirements in the future (which is why the Air Force is only partially replacing the KC-135 with the KC-46). Today, the United States Air Force has around 600 tankers - around 75% of the world's total military tanker fleet. Congress requires the Air Force to operate a minimum of 466 tankers (its unclear if Congress excludes the KC-130Js from its definition of tankers). Regardless, 179 KC-46A Pegasus tankers will not be enough to replace the KC-135s and KC-10s . Two future tankers the Air Force is currently working on are the blended-wing body JetZero aircraft and a stealth tanker being developed by Lockheed Martin. The Air Force will be compelled to keep large numbers of KC-135s in service until these (or other) tankers come into service in sufficient numbers in the 2030s. JetZero is planning for the blended wing body to become a commercial airliner. "The JetZero Blended Wing is the biggest leap in commercial aircraft design since the beginning of the jet age and the best first step toward the ultimate goal of zero-carbon emissions aviation. The aircraft will launch in 2030 with 100% SAF compatibility, and the internal volume to accommodate zero-carbon hydrogen." - JetZero JetZero (with Northrop Grumman) has been contracted to build a full-scale blended wing-body cargo/tanker demonstrator for the Air Force and says the aircraft should be operational by 2030. Blended wing-bodied aircraft offer much greater efficiencies and are seen as a key technology to allow the airline industry to reach net-zero emissions. The other tanker in development is the Next-Generation Aerial Refueling System (NGAS) being developed by Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works. NGAS is designed as a stealthy platform (which would enable it to fly closer to or in contested airspace). There have been discussions if the aircraft will be manned or unmanned (recent renderings of NGAS show it to be an unmanned platform). Currently, the NGAS is planned to enter service by around 2035. However, there are doubts about the future of the program as the Air Force has said it may prove unaffordable .
