(The Center Square) – The majority of Americans generally support the idea of cutting back on the federal government, polling finds. The Pew Research poll from this summer found that 56% of Americans say the government is “almost always wasteful and inefficient.” Gallup’s recent polling data shows that 55% of Americans say the government is doing “too much” while only 41% say it should do more. Americans are more evenly split how big the government should be, but increasing government efficiency has more broad support. “Gallup polling earlier this year showed that 58% of Americans are dissatisfied with the size and power of the federal government,” Gallup said. “A slight majority of Americans say the government has too much power. Seven in 10 Americans in 2019 agreed that businesses can do things more efficiently than the federal government.” The survey comes after President-elect Donald Trump won the White House and issued broad, sweeping plans to decrease the scope of the federal government. To accomplish this task, Trump appointed businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and billionaire Elon Musk to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency. “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies – Essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,’” Trump said in his announcement. Both Ramaswamy and Musk have publicly issued scathing remarks about the waste of federal resources currently occurring in Washington, D.C. Ramaswamy, for instance, has laid out a specific plan on how thousands of federal workers could be fired. The pair of businessmen have said publicly DOGE could cut $2 trillion in federal spending. Ramaswamy and Musk visited Capitol Hill on Thursday to meet with lawmakers to discuss the potential cuts, which could even include ideas as drastic as eliminating the Department of Education and returning that responsibility to the states. Trump's allies have also discussed cutting spending on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, which are seen by Trump's camp as taxpayer-funded investment in woke ideology. Whether such stark actions would be supported by Americans remains unclear, but for now the latest polling shows Americans want something to be done. On top of that, Americans’ desire for smaller government seems to be more than a momentary political phase. “Gallup has asked this question annually over the past 24 years. On average, 52% of Americans have said the government is doing too much, compared with 42% saying the government should do more...” Gallup said. “Only twice have more Americans chosen the ‘government should do more’ alternative over the ‘government doing too much’ alternative -- in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and in 2020 after the outbreak of COVID-19.”Writing in the November bulletin of the North Dakota Newspaper Association, Executive Director Cecile Wehrman said: “Well, it was nice while it lasted. ADVERTISEMENT “For several weeks after the postal roundtable held in Grand Forks on Aug. 26, I was getting a few messages from eastern (N.D.) newspapers expressing surprise that they were suddenly getting their newspapers (delivered) on time. “Of course, it didn’t last.” Wehrman, who is an accomplished journalist and former publisher/editor of weekly newspapers, was commenting on the ever-worsening level of service to North Dakota’s weekly newspapers from the United States Postal Service. (It’s the same for daily papers.) Her column was headlined “Postal issues still not resolved” — an understatement if ever there was one. At a time when community newspapers that have been mainstays of towns and counties for generations are struggling because of changes in the rural economy, USPS is making a challenging situation worse. In some cases, shoddy service from USPS has hastened, or even guaranteed, a newspaper’s demise. Weekly newspapers depend on the postal service to actually provide the service it is required to provide. Instead, deliveries are unreliable, unpredictable and sometimes so late that the content of the newspapers — news and advertising — is meaningless. Some advertisers have demanded refunds from publishers because ads didn’t get to readers in a timely fashion. Think of what that does to the bottom line of a small newspaper that counts on every advertising dollar. So what’s wrong with USPS? These days, just about everything. But at its core is a long-festering systemic fiasco that dates to the 1970 Postal Reorganization Act that reduced USPS from a cabinet-level department to an independent quasi-business agency. It’s an incompatible hybrid of half-baked privatization and fumbled government obligation. It was a mistake of historic proportions, and the years since have proved as much. It was an ideology-driven congressional manipulation of the constitutional mandate (Article I, Section 8), which gives Congress the power to establish post offices and post roads. ADVERTISEMENT The doctrine of universal service (getting first-class mail to you wherever you are) is what the framers envisioned. They did not enable a system that was going to be profitable commerce. The universal service obligation is not a profit model; and attempts since 1970 to make it so have failed. The USPS is a mess for many reasons: union intransigence, competition, the digital revolution, mismanagement, political interference and corruption. Nonetheless, mail delivery should be adequately federally funded, not dependent on a demonstrably unworkable profit pretense. It’s a constitutional obligation, much like providing for the common defense and the general welfare. Do we expect the Department of Defense to make a profit? Do national parks pay for themselves? The interstate highway system? Farm subsidies? Congress appropriates funds to meet those obligations. It should be the same for the postal service. As the Constitution directs: deliver the mail — and those weekly newspapers — everywhere and on time. State gets $1.9M to promote air travel from new marketsOnce again, the winter holiday season is upon us! I am sure I have said this before, but I never cease to be amazed at the seemingly endless varieties of holiday plants available. This year, I planned on not buying any holiday plants, but one trip to two local greenhouses changed my mind immediately. If one plant could exemplify the season, it would be the Poinsettia. Although red and white Poinsettias have been the standard for many years, there are a lot of really neat colors available if you look hard enough. One of my all-time favorites is orange. I used to grow this variety when it first came out, and could never stock enough of them. In the old days, you needed to set it next to a red one to tell the difference, but fast forward many years, and the orange is now much more intense and can stand alone in all its glory. If I had to pick just one favorite Poinsettia , it would be the yellow. It just looks so unusual and unlike anything else. I first saw it years ago in small quantities in a big box store, but now they are much more common. The regular white has a slight yellow tint to it, but there is a super bright white that looks as pure as freshly fallen snow. Another new favorite is called “Christmas Mouse,” and has rounded leaves that resemble mouse ears in contrast to the normal pointed ones. Of course, there are also Poinsettias that are actually spray painted with a plant-safe paint. These plants usually also have glitter sprinkled onto them. Even though these are artificial looking, they are beautiful works of art in their own right. There are new varieties of cyclamen around too. These are characterized by interestingly shaped flowers that are more open. Some of the varieties even have the flowers turned upright. The colors are amazing and range from dark maroon reds to almost neon pink. Another plant I am really excited to see this year is the Amaryllis. These have been around an extremely long time, but what changed is the number of places carrying many different varieties for sale. I like when I can just buy the bulb and pot it up on my own. This is less expensive and allows me to buy more varieties. There are even some places selling the bulbs with a type of paint coating on them which is said to eliminates the need for watering. I prefer a bulb in a pot as I think it looks more natural, but that is a matter of opinion. What I have seen a lot less of this year is the Christmas Cactus. While they are still around, their numbers are not nearly as plentiful as in the past. The Amaryllis and Christmas cactus are the two plants you can keep long term. They each have special care routines that you will need to follow to get them to bloom again the following year. The Christmas cacti need a certain lighting (or darkness) period, and the Amaryllis need a dry dormant period. Wherever you are going for the holidays, I suggest bringing one of these festive plants to the host as a gift. There is nothing more cheerful than a brightly colored plant during the dark days of winter. On that note, why not buy some for yourself and enjoy them all season? Either way, I suggest you make the most of things with a nice new plant variety that you never had before. There certainly are plenty from which to choose.
