As more states legalize cannabis, the conversation has shifted from just legalizing the substance to addressing the deep-rooted damage caused by the War on Drugs, particularly within marginalized communities. For many, cannabis legalization is about more than just making it legal—it’s a chance to repair past wrongs and provide opportunities for economic empowerment to those who have suffered the most from criminalization. A major step in this direction is the rise of social equity programs . These initiatives are designed to help people—especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) —who have been disproportionately affected by cannabis prohibition. These programs not only offer financial assistance for expungement services (which help clear old cannabis-related convictions) but also provide mentorship for those looking to enter the cannabis industry. Companies like Green Thumb Industries and Curio Wellness are leading the charge by providing resources to aspiring entrepreneurs from underserved communities, helping them navigate the complex world of cannabis licensing and business development. Despite the promising steps these programs have made, significant barriers still remain. One of the biggest challenges is the high cost of entering the cannabis industry. The fees for obtaining cannabis licenses and the complex regulatory environment can be overwhelming, particularly for those who have been historically excluded from economic opportunities. While social equity programs aim to level the playing field, financial challenges can still limit access for the most vulnerable communities. In addition to these equity efforts, there’s a growing trend among consumers to support local cannabis producers —especially craft cannabis farmers . These smaller businesses tend to emphasize quality, sustainability, and community values over the mass production methods of large corporate growers. By choosing to support local cannabis farms, consumers contribute to the local economy, promote ethical practices, and push back against the overwhelming influence of big corporations. This movement is part of a broader trend of ethical consumption , where every purchase can help shape a more socially responsible industry. Supporting smaller producers has benefits beyond just the financial. These businesses are often more in tune with their communities and provide a chance to foster greater diversity within the cannabis market. In states like Massachusetts , where cannabis licenses are distributed with a focus on social equity , local producers from historically impacted communities now have the chance to play a role in shaping the future of the cannabis industry. These opportunities not only create jobs but also allow individuals who have been affected by cannabis prohibition to take part in the economic boom that legalization has brought. While progress has been made, there’s still a lot of work to be done. For the full potential of the cannabis industry to be realized, we need to continue addressing systemic barriers , such as the high costs of entry and institutional discrimination, which still prevent many from taking full advantage of cannabis opportunities. By supporting local farmers and small businesses , alongside expanding social equity programs , we can work towards a cannabis market that is not just profitable, but also just , inclusive , and deeply connected to the communities it serves.Mr Carter, a former peanut farmer, served one term in the White House between 1977 and 1981, taking over in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. After his defeat by Ronald Reagan, he spent his post-presidency years as a global humanitarian, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His death on Sunday was announced by his family and came more than a year after he decided to enter hospice care. He was the longest-lived US president. His son, Chip Carter, said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love. “My brothers, sister and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” World leaders have paid tribute to Mr Carter, including US President Joe Biden, who was one of the first politicians to endorse Mr Carter for president in 1976 and said the world had “lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian”. He said: “Over six decades, we had the honour of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well. “With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe.” Irish President Michael D Higgins said Mr Carter was “a principled man who dedicated his life to seeking to advance the cause of peace across the world”. He added: “On behalf of the people of Ireland, may I express my sympathies to President Carter’s children and extended family, to President Joe Biden, to the people of the United States, and to his wide circle of colleagues and friends across the globe.” Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta and Washington DC before being buried in his home town of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and finally, the White House, where he took office as the 39th president. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked for more than four decades leading the Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. Under his leadership, the Carter Center managed to virtually eliminate Guinea Worm disease, which has gone from affecting 3.5 million people in Africa and Asia in 1986 to just 14 in 2023. Mrs Carter, who died last year aged 96, had played a more active role in her husband’s presidency than previous first ladies, with Mr Carter saying she had been “my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”. Earlier this year, on his 100th birthday, Mr Carter received a private congratulatory message from the King, expressing admiration for his life of public service.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Angel Yin was making putts from across the green and threatening to build a big lead until Jeeno Thitikul finished eagle-birdie for a 9-under 63 to share the lead Saturday going into the final round of the CME Group Tour Championship with $4 million on the line. Yin had a 69 after another day of big putts and one chip-in from some 60 feet for eagle on the par-5 sixth hole that put her comfortably ahead at Tiburon Golf Club. She holed a 30-footer on the eighth hole, another birdie from about 25 feet on the ninth hole and another one from the 30-foot range on the 12th. Thitikul seemed to be an afterthought until she lit it up on the back nine for a 30. The Thai started the back nine with three straight bogeys, but she made up quick ground at the end with her eagle on the reachable par-5 17th and a birdie on the closing hole. The birdie briefly gave her the lead until Yin made birdie on the 17th to join her. They were tied at 15-under 201, three shots head of Ruoning Yin, who birdied her last two for a 66. Charley Hull had seven birdies in her round of 66 and was at 11-under 205, along with Narin An of South Korea. Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., was tied for 16th at 7 under after a round of 69. Nelly Korda, who got back into the mix on Friday after a sluggish start, lost ground with a 69 on a pleasant day that left her six shots back going into the final round. Korda has won four of her seven LPGA titles this year coming from behind. This could be a tall order. At stake is the richest payoff in women’s golf, $4 million to the winner, nearly as much as Korda has made all year in her seven-victory season. Thitikul already picked up a $1 million bonus this week through the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge, a competition based on how players score on a designated hole each week. Now she could leave Florida with a total of $5 million. “Actually, $1 million is really good enough for me,” Thitikul said. “If I can get more, it’s definitely going to be a nice, because as my team know I spend a lot of money. That’s why I have to keep playing good golf, like spending on shopping day.” Angel Yin heard plenty of cheers for her long birdie putts, and the chip-in for eagle. She also was helped by a couple of pars after bad drives. She went well to the left at No. 10, did well to blast out on a blind shot just short of the green and then got up-and-down with a pitch to 4 feet. And then on the 13th, another tee shot went well to the left. She tried to get it back in play from just in front of some bushes, and from 50 yards hit wedge to about 15 feet. She holed that putt, too, that kept her in front. “I’m scoring still,” Yin said. “Making some mistakes, but saving a bunch, so a lot of positives.” ___ AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf The Associated PressGoogle, Microsoft praise M'sia's approach to building AI infrastructure, roadmap

NoneTayshawn Comer scores 18 to lead Evansville past Campbell 66-53On a night when Sidney Crosby became the all-time assist leader for the Pittsburgh Penguins, they escaped a never-say-die New York Islanders team, splitting the home-and-home series with a 3-2 win on Sunday. The home team, desperate for a win against anybody in the Metropolitan Division, got goals from Anthony Beauvillier, Michael Bunting, and Philip Tomasino. Meanwhile, Alex Nedeljkovic was solid between the pipes, losing his shutout with about seven minutes to go in the third. Thanks to the win and the two points, the Penguins are currently sitting in the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. On Saturday night, Crosby set up Bunting's powerplay goal to become the Penguins' all-time assist leader. However, the NHL checked the tape and took the helper away from the Pittsburgh captain, giving him a chance to break the record at home on Sunday. WITNESSING HISTORY! With his 1,034th career assist, Sidney Crosby has surpassed Mario Lemieux to become the ' all-time assist leader 👏 We're sure this time 😉 — Penguins PR (@PenguinsPR) Naturally, Crosby didn't disappoint, setting up Bunting (again) for a powerplay goal in the second period to officially become the franchise's assist leader. Interestingly, Tomasino picked up the second assist on the play. As a huge Penguins fan growing up, someone who loved watching Crosby play, it was only fitting that he was in on the historic goal that has rewritten the Pittsburgh record book for the first time since December 2005. Thanks to an idle Ottawa Senators, the Penguins will go to bed on Sunday night sitting in the second wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. However, it almost didn't happen. Pittsburgh had the crowd on the edge of their seats for most of the contest, with Crosby and Bryan Rust even getting breakaway opportunities. Everyone was still excited after the team's two powerplay goals to extend their lead to 3-0. But after just six shots in the opening period, the Islanders kept pressing and got 25 shots over the final two frames, scoring two goals with an empty net in the third. Despite their 41 shots on goal and feeding off the energy of a hyped-up crowd, the Penguins almost let this one slip away and only escaped with two points, thanks to Nedeljkovic's stellar play. At 26, Nathan Clurman is, by all accounts, not a rookie. However, he did make his NHL debut on Sunday. On top of getting his first NHL penalty in the second period, he came close to matching a Penguins record for most shots by a defenseman in their first game, with four. Surprisingly, Clurman was one of four Pittsburgh skaters with more than three shots, joining Erik Karlsson, Beauvillier, and Rust. Moreover, he finished the game with an even plus/minus rating. Finally, Sportsnet Pittsburgh awarded Clurman the "hit of the game" on Brock Nelson just three minutes into his first period. Considering how many injuries the Penguins have seen on the back end, getting a solid performance from Clurman out of the gate is positive since they can rely on him to log some minutes until the reinforcements return.
