Pope Francis kicks off a yearlong Jubilee that will test his stamina and Rome's patience VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has opened the great Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. The ceremony kicks off the 2025 Holy Year. It's a celebration of the Catholic Church that is expected to draw some 32 million pilgrims to Rome. And it will test the pope’s stamina and the ability of the Eternal City to welcome them. This begins the Christmas Eve Mass. The ceremony inaugurates the once-every-25-year tradition of a Jubilee. Francis has dedicated the 2025 Jubilee to the theme of hope. Bethlehem marks a second subdued Christmas Eve during the war in Gaza BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Bethlehem is marking another somber Christmas Eve under the shadow of war in Gaza. Manger Square lacked its usual festive lights and crowds of tourists on Tuesday. Instead, the area outside the Nativity Church was quiet. The church was built atop the spot where Jesus is believed to have been born. The war, the violence in the occupied West Bank it has spurred and the lack of festivities has deeply hurt Bethlehem's economy. The town relies heavily on Christmas tourism. The economy in the West Bank was already reeling because of restrictions placed on laborers preventing them from entering Israel during the war. Heavy travel day starts with brief grounding of all American Airlines flights WASHINGTON (AP) — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne Tuesday about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop, which prevented planes from taking off. American said in an email that the problem was caused by vendor technology in its flight operating system. Aviation analytics company Cirium said flights were delayed across American’s major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time. Nineteen flights were cancelled. Haiti gangs fire on journalists covering a planned hospital reopening, leaving casualties PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Suspected gang members have opened fire on journalists in Haiti’s capital as they were covering the attempted reopening of the country’s largest hospital, wounding or killing an unknown number of people. The country's interim president, Leslie Voltaire, said in an address to the nation that journalists and police were among the victims of the vicious Christmas Eve attack. He did not specify how many casualties there were, or give a breakdown for the dead or wounded. Radio Télé Métronome said earlier on Tuesday that seven journalists and two police officers were wounded in the shooting. Street gangs have taken over an estimated 85% of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The Israeli military said it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of some uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid. The NHS reported an unusually early start to the flu season last week with the number of people in hospital with the dangerous virus four time higher than this time last year. This is despite the fact that more than 15 million eligible Britons have had the latest flu vaccine since September - an above average uptake for the jab which reduces the risk of infection and serious symptoms. Now, experts are warning that the vaccine - which is updated every year to protect against the latest form of flu - may provide inadequate protection against the version of the virus spreading in the UK. The vaccine rolled out in Britain is modelled on the jab used in southern hemisphere countries like Australia and New Zealand which had their winter flu season six months ago. This is because the same form of flu which affected those countries usually reaches the UK in the winter months. But data suggests that, this year, the vaccine was around 30 per cent less effective than normal in those countries. In parts of Australia, the Government was forced to implement emergency measures to boost the number of nurses, hospital beds and medical clinics after the worst flu outbreak in seven years saw thousands hospitalised. In 2017, a mismatched flu vaccine was responsible for 50,000 extra deaths in the UK, according to the Office of National Statistics. ‘Looking at the numbers of people being hospitalised, it’s clear the kick-off rate is much steeper this year,’ says Penny Ward, visiting professor in pharmaceutical medicine at King’s College, London. Read More Should YOU have a flu jab? Read our ultimate guide to whether it's worth it ‘A well-matched flu vaccine should provide around 60 to 70 per cent protection from hospitalisation. ‘But data suggests the southern hemisphere vaccine which ours is modelled on was only 40 per cent effective – which is quite low. ‘It’s possible we have a vaccine that is badly matched to the virus strains that are circulating.’ Flu, or influenza, is responsible for around 40,000 hospitalisations and more than 10,000 deaths in the UK every year. The symptoms typically include fever, sore throat, muscle aches and a cough. People over the age of 65, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions are all more at-risk of life-threatening symptoms. Every year, these groups, along with NHS staff and carers, are offered a vaccine. The jab does not provide complete protection against the virus, but reduces the risk of dangerous symptoms and infection. Last week, NHS chiefs warned of a potential ‘quad-demic’ with rising cases of flu, Covid, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and the stomach bug norovirus. Around 95 per cent of hospital beds in England were occupied each day last week, the highest figure on record for this time of year. However, they say there are steps people can take to reducing the risk of infection. ‘If you are showing symptoms of flu or Covid-19 such as a high temperature, cough, and feeling tired and achy, try to limit your contact with others, especially those who are vulnerable,’ says Dr Alexander Allen, consultant epidemiologist, at the UK Health Security Agency ‘Washing your hands regularly and using tissues can also help to reduce the spread of illness.’ Experts also say that, even if the vaccine is less protective than usual, it is still the most effective measure of reducing serious illness. ‘It’s better to receive a vaccine that is well matched to the strain you encounter,’ says Prof Ward. ‘But even if the vaccine is not a good match, it still offers protection against more severe disease.’ NHS London New Zealand Share or comment on this article: Experts fear new jab may not be able to fight pre-Christmas flu outbreak e-mail Add commentUS President JoeBiden was informed about the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines planein Kazakhstan, coordinator for strategic communications at theWhite House National Security Council John Kirby said, reports. Unlike the latest smartphone , laptop , router or kitchen tool , it’s impractical to personally test every ISP in a given city. So what’s our approach? We start by researching the pricing, availability and speed information drawing on our own historical ISP data, the provider sites and mapping information from the Federal Communications Commission at FCC.gov . But it doesn’t end there. We go to the FCC’s website to check our data and ensure we consider every ISP that provides service in an area. We also input local addresses on provider websites to find specific options for residents. We look at sources, including the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power, to evaluate how happy customers are with an ISP’s service. ISP plans and prices are subject to frequent changes; all information provided is accurate as of publication. Once we have this localized information, we ask three main questions: While the answer to those questions is often layered and complex, the providers who come closest to "yes" on all three are the ones we recommend. When selecting the cheapest internet service, we look for the plans with the lowest monthly fee, though we also factor in things like price increases, equipment fees and contracts. Choosing the fastest internet service is relatively straightforward. We look at advertised upload and download speeds and consider real-world speed data from sources like Ookla and FCC reports . (Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis.) To explore our process in more depth, visit our how we test ISPs page. ‘A man of principle, faith and humility’Cricket fans - and even Mitchell Starc - slam Marnus Labuschagne for his wild act during India's Boxing Day Test run chase Marnus Labuschagne was in slips on day five of Test India are facing a record run chase to win seesawing match By JAMES COONEY FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA and OLIVER CAFFREY AND ROGER VAUGHAN FOR AAP Published: 01:33, 30 December 2024 | Updated: 01:33, 30 December 2024 e-mail View comments Marnus Labuschagne is known for his enthusiasm on the cricket field, but one act has got on supporters' nerves during India 's Boxing Day Test run chase on Monday at the MCG. Labuschagne's gritty half-century drove Australia to a 333-run lead at the close of day four, but the Aussie was annoying fans - and even his teammate Mitchell Starc - with his constant appeals on day five. Numerous times throughout the morning, Labuschagne appealed for wickets that even his teammates didn't believe were a chance of falling. On one occasion, Starc waved Labuschagne and others away after he appealed a caught behind that missed the bat by, what commentators described as, 'a mile'. 'What on Earth is Marnus seeing here,' posted Fox Cricket to social media alongside a clip of the delivery in question. 'Marnus Labuschagne is showing he doesn't have a career post cricket as a test umpire,' wrote another. India will need to defy history and the vagaries of the MCG wicket if they are to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy for a record-extending fifth-straight series. Australia added only a further six runs on Monday after they were bowled out for 234 in the second over of day five, giving them a lead of 339. Nathan Lyon (41) and Scott Boland (15 not out), Australia's No.10 and 11, made 61 in a crucial last-wicket stand that shot the lead past the crucial 300 mark and frustrated India. A bumper crowd is expected to come to the MCG for what could be one of Test cricket's most memorable days. A total of 299,329 fans have already attended this Boxing Day Test, with the all-time MCG record crowd of 350,534 in the 1936-37 Ashes series, when Don Bradman was king, expected to fall. Out-of-form India captain Rohit Sharma will open the batting with young superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal. If India win, they go 2-1 up in the series and as the reigning champions, they will retain the trophy regardless of the fifth Test next week in Sydney. Labuschagne is known for his enthusiasm on the field and love of cricket But the highest successful Test run chase at the ground was nearly a century ago, when England made 7-332 to beat Australia in 1928. If India win, it will be their third-highest Test run chase. It would even beat the 7-329 they posted to win the fourth Test at the Gabba in 2021 and claim the series. Australia's recovery from a shaky 6-91 late on Sunday - also helped by skipper Pat Cummins' 41 - was the latest twist in an epic Test full of momentum swings. Indian superstar Jasprit Bumrah finished with figures of 5-57, giving him nine wickets for the Test and taking him up to 30 for the series. Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne, who played in the 2021 loss, said that Brisbane wicket was far removed from the MCG pitch. 'As the game has gone on, the bounce has gotten less and more inconsistent,' said Labuschagne, who has impressed in this Test with 72 and 70. 'So we're just getting more balls hitting the stumps, more balls skidding through. Pat Cummins snagged two wickets in a single over on Monday morning 'That makes for pretty tricky batting, because more balls are hitting the stumps from a shorter length. Balls are skidding through (and) a few balls shot up today. 'That wicket (at the Gabba three years ago) was flat ... the main part of the wicket was really nice.' Just as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar turned India's fortunes around on Saturday with their epic eighth-wicket stand, Reddy feels one good partnership on Monday will set up India for the win. Reddy top-scored with 114 in their first innings, his maiden Test ton. 'I feel like you need to get one partnership, one or two good partnerships,' he said. 'We can see later on the fourth day, it (the pitch) was doing a little bit more. 'But we don't need to put on more pressure, like pitches doing this or that. We need to play according to the situations.' HOUSTON — Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, died Sunday at age 100. Reactions are pouring in from leaders across the country, including those from Texas and the Houston area. Carter passed away Sunday afternoon in Plains, Georgia, The Carter Center announced . The organization shared in Feb. 2023 that the former president had entered home hospice care. RELATED: Former President Jimmy Carter -- his legacy and his ties to Houston Texas was a big part of Carter's political success. He was the last Democrat to carry Texas in 1976. He campaigned in Texas often. His visits to Houston continued after the presidency. A fierce advocate of affordable housing, Carter and his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, spent time building new homes here with Habitat for Humanity. The former president -- a passionate defender of human rights -- also established the Carter-Menil Human Rights Foundation, standing alongside Desmond Tutu at the Rothko Chapel in Houston in 1986 and joining Nelson Mandela on his visit to Houston in 1991. “Cecilia and I mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter alongside millions of Americans across the country. Our nation remains the greatest beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world because of our fearless chief executives who are our guiding force through the best and worst of times. For that, we owe President Carter our enduring gratitude for his service as the 39th President of the United States. We pray for peace and comfort for his loved ones as they mourn his loss, and take solace in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Rosalynn." "As a naval officer, Georgia state senator, governor, and President of the United States, Jimmy Carter served our nation with honor. His love for his home state of Georgia and for those he served through his beloved Maranatha Baptist Church and charities like Habitat for Humanity was evident throughout his life, and his legacy will remain a cherished part of our great American story. My prayers are with the entire Carter family during this time.” "President Carter did more than help build homes through Habitat for Humanity. He gave people hope and made them feel a greater sense of humanity through volunteering or becoming homeowners. Houston is proud to have a special connection to President Carter; we will honor his memory and continue his mission of doing good for others.” "The remarkable, long life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter is one to mourn and also to celebrate. A man of unwavering dedication to service, his impact on our nation and the world will endure for generations. Rest in peace, Mr. President. “Houston Habitat feels a special connection to President Carter and we are saddened to learn of his passing. Houston was — and remains — proud and honored to have been the site of a 100-home build in 1998. A truly awe-inspiring and purposeful build by President and Rosalynn Carter and Houston volunteers nearly 26 years ago. People still talk about that build and the way President Carter showed up to make a true mark and drive the successful completion of those homes. He left an impression on our organization and our community that remains.” "Charles Duncan, who served as Pres. Carter's Sec'y of Energy, went to ask him to be the 1993 Rice commencement speaker. Carter said he didn't like giving commencement speeches, & besides he had enough honorary degrees. Charles informed him that Rice didn't give honorary degrees. That, according to the story, piqued Pres. Carter's interest & turned conversation around. "You don't give honorary degrees?" he reportedly asked. He was so taken w/ idea that Rice didn't give degrees to anyone who didn't earn them that he changed his mind and agreed to speak. When the last time you heard about someone who agreed to give a commencement speech at a university BECAUSE it wouldn't award him an honorary degree? (This was related directly by Charles Duncan.) An example of humility, decency, compassion and contribution."NEW YORK (AP) — He's making threats, traveling abroad and negotiating with world leaders. Donald Trump has more than a month and a half to go before he's sworn in for a second term. But the Republican president-elect is already moving aggressively not just to fill his Cabinet and outline policy goals, but to achieve them. Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, prompting emergency calls and a visit from Canada's prime minister that resulted in what Trump claimed were commitments from both U.S. allies on new border security measures. The incoming president has warned there will be “ALL HELL TO PAY" if Hamas does not release the hostages being held in Gaza before his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. And this weekend, Trump returned to the global stage, joining a host of other foreign leaders for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral five years after it was ravaged by a fire. There, he was welcomed like a sitting dignitary , with a prime seat next to French President Emmanuel Macron . Absent in Paris: lame duck President Joe Biden, who has largely disappeared from headlines, except when he issued a pardon of his son , Hunter, who was facing sentencing for gun crimes and tax evasion. First lady Jill Biden attended in his place. “I think you have seen more happen in the last two weeks than you’ve seen in the last four years. And we’re not even there yet,” Trump said in an over-the-top boast at an awards ceremony Thursday night . For all of Trump's bold talk, though, it is unclear how many of his efforts will bear fruit. The pre-inauguration threats and deal-making are highly unusual, like so much of what Trump does, said Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University. “Transitions are always a little complicated in this way. Even though we talk about one president at a time," he said, “the reality is one president plus. And that plus can act assertively sometimes." Zelizer said that is particularly true of Trump, who was president previously and already has relationships with many foreign leaders such as Macron, who invited both Trump and Biden to Paris this weekend as part of the Notre Dame celebration. “Right now he’s sort of governing even though he’s not the president yet. He’s having these public meetings with foreign leaders, which aren't simply introductions. He's staking out policy and negotiating things from drug trafficking to tariffs," Zelizer said. Trump had already met with several foreign leaders before this weekend's trip. He hosted Argentinian President Javier Milei in Florida at his Mar-a-Lago club in November. After the tariff threat, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago for a three-hour dinner meeting. Canadian officials later said the country is ready to make new investments in border security, with plans for more helicopters, drones and law enforcement officers. Incoming Trump aides have also been meeting with their future foreign counterparts. On Wednesday, several members of Trump's team, including incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz, met with Andriy Yermak, a top aide to Zelenskyy, in Washington, as Ukraine tries to win support for its ongoing efforts to defend itself from Russian invasion, according to a person familiar with the meeting. Yermak also met with Trump officials in Florida, he wrote on X . That comes after Trump's incoming Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, traveled to Qatar and Israel for high-level talks about a cease-fire and hostage deal in Gaza, according to a U.S. official familiar with the efforts, meeting with the prime ministers of both countries. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. There is no prohibition on incoming officials or nominees meeting with foreign officials, and it is common and fine for them to do so — unless those meetings are designed to subvert or otherwise impact current U.S. policy. Trump aides were said to be especially cognizant of potential conflicts given their experience in 2016, when interactions between Trump allies and Russian officials came under scrutiny. That included a phone call in which Trump's incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn, discussed new sanctions with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, suggesting things would improve after Trump became president. Flynn was later charged with lying to the FBI about the conversation. Trump’s incoming press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that “all transition officials have followed applicable laws in their interactions with foreign nationals.” She added: “World leaders recognize that President Trump is returning to power and will lead with strength to put the best interests of the United States of America first again. That is why many foreign leaders and officials have reached out to correspond with President Trump and his incoming team.” Such efforts can nonetheless cause complications. If, say, Biden is having productive conversations on a thorny foreign policy issue and Trump weighs in, that could make it harder for Biden “because people are hearing two different voices” that may be in conflict, Zelizer said. Leaders like Russia's Vladimir Putin and Netanyahu may also anticipate a more favorable incoming administration and wait Biden out, hoping for a better deal. Although there is no requirement that an incoming administration coordinate calls and meetings with foreign officials with the State Department or National Security Council, that has long been considered standard practice. That is, in part, because transition teams, particularly in their early days and weeks, do not always have the latest information about the state of relations with foreign nations and may not have the resources, including interpretation and logistical ability, to handle such meetings efficiently. It is unclear the level of State Department involvement, but the Biden and Trump teams say they have been talking, particularly on the Middle East, with the incoming and outgoing administrations having agreed to work together on efforts to free hostages who remain held in Gaza, according to a U.S. official, who was not authorized to comment publicly about the sensitive talks and spoke on condition of anonymity. That includes conversations between Witkoff and Biden’s foreign policy team as well as Waltz and Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Last month, Biden administration officials said they had kept Trump’s team closely apprised of efforts to broker a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah on the Israel-Lebanon border. “I just want to be clear to all of our adversaries, they can’t play the incoming Trump administration off of the Biden administration. I’m regularly talking to the Biden people. And so, this is not a moment of opportunity or wedges for them," Waltz said Friday in a Fox Business interview. Sullivan echoed those comments at the Ronald Reagan National Defense Forum Saturday. “It has been professional. It has been substantive. And frankly, it has been good," he said of their coordination on national security issues. “Obviously we don’t see eye to eye on every issue, and that’s no secret to anybody," he went on. But he said both teams believe “it is our job on behalf of the American people to make sure this is a smooth transition,” particularly given the seriousness of issues like the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and threats from China. “The nature of the world we find ourselves in today only elevates our responsibility to be engaged, to talk regularly, to meet regularly, to be transparent, to share, and to make sure it’s an effective transition,” he said. Trump’s team, meanwhile, is already claiming credit for everything from gains in the stock and cryptocurrency markets to a decision by Walmart to roll back diversity, equity and inclusion policies Trump opposes. “Promises Kept — And President Trump Hasn’t Even Been Inaugurated Yet,” read one press release that claimed, in part, that both Canada and Mexico have already pledged "immediate action” to help “stem the flow of illegal immigration, human trafficking, and deadly drugs entering the United States." Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stopped short of saying Trump mischaracterized their call in late November. But she said Friday that Trump “has his own way of communicating, like when we had the phone call and he wrote that we were going to close the border. That was never talked about in the phone call.” Earlier this week, Mexico carried out what it claimed was its largest seizure of fentanyl pills ever. Seizures over the summer had been as little as 50 grams per week, and after the Trump call, they seized more than a ton. Biden, too, tried to take credit for the seizure in a statement Friday night. ___ Associated Press writers Matthew Lee, Aamer Madhani, Colleen Long and Ellen Knickmeyer in Washington and Mark Stevenson in Mexico City contributed to this report.
