DETROIT (AP) — The reliability of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids has dramatically improved, narrowing a wide gap with gas-powered automobiles, according to the latest survey by Consumer Reports. But vehicles with internal combustion engines and gas-electric hybrids are still far more dependable, the survey found. Consumer Reports subscribers, who filled out surveys during much of 2024, reported that electric vehicles had 42% more problems than gas autos on average. But that was down from 79% more in the 2023 survey. The survey released Thursday measured reliability of vehicles mainly from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years. Plug-ins, which travel a short distance on battery power before a hybrid powertrain kicks in, had 70% more problems than gas vehicles, but that was less than half the difference found in last year’s survey. The reason for the improvement? EV and plug-in technology are maturing, said Jake Fisher, head of Consumer Reports’ automobile test center. “As the automakers get more experience with the new technologies and new platforms, they will improve,” Fisher said. He said he expects plug-in and electric vehicles to keep getting better, further closing the gap with gas vehicles. But one thing may stand in the way: Automakers often test new automation and other features on EVs, and the new stuff is prone to glitches. “Until we get to where an EV is just a car that does practical things with their own powertrain, I’m not sure they’ll ever catch up totally” to gas vehicles, Fisher said. The new technology may offer more than the next wave of EV buyers would like, as EVs move from early adopters to more practical mainstream buyers, Fisher said. “There are people who just want a car that’s easy to maintain,” he said. “I don’t use gas. The Orioles should be working very hard to keep McCann in Baltimore. Rutschman is still a young catcher, and the leadership McCann provides for not only Rutschman but the whole clubhouse is invaluable. Also, top prospect Samuel Basallo , a catcher, is set to debut in 2025, and having McCann around him could help his growth. Besides the Orioles, it’s tough to tell where else McCann could land. There are plenty of playoff-caliber teams who could use McCann’s leadership and toughness. But a rebuilding team with a young catcher could also try to copy the Orioles’ plan. One rebuilding team that stands out is the Washington Nationals. They showed some spark in 2024, but could not get the offense going consistently. This could be the result when populism meets the mainstream again, and hitherto safe assumptions about politics are blown away because many voters decide they have had enough of the highest energy prices in Europe. Eby said the lumber and forestry sectors are already strained by a recent increase in duties amid the ongoing U.S.-Canada dispute over softwood lumber. He said after the first meeting of his new cabinet in Victoria that the tariffs are "unjustified," and they would hurt Americans as much as they would Canadians. The premier said B.C. is a source of natural gas, wood products, minerals and other products that U.S. businesses depend on, and the tariff would hinder jobs and opportunities in the province while making "life more expensive for Americans." Eby and Ottawa have called for a united front dealing with Trump's tariff plan, which he announced on social media on Monday. Eby said B.C. officials had repeatedly raised concerns with Ottawa over organized crime and illicit drugs, such as fentanyl, in relation to border security. "It's a priority for us. The family of missing Hawaiian photographer Hannah Kobayashi says two suspicious Venmo payments she made to a man and woman around the time she vanished are being investigated by cops. Kobayashi, 30, made the payments on Nov. 9 — a day after she missed a connecting flight to New York and was left stranded in Los Angeles, her aunt Larie Pidgeon told the US Sun. One sent at 6:25 p.m. was to a woman named Veronica Almendarez and had a description of a bow-and-arrow emoji. The second payment was made less than an hour later — at 7:19 p.m. — to a man named Jonathan Taylor with the subject line “Reading,” which appeared to be for a tarot card reading, sources told the outlet. “We have been made aware and so have the LAPD. It’s in their hands,” Pidgeon told the Sun. “We are still focused on Downtown LA. Even though it’s been 15 [days] we still have hope,” she added. The distraught aunt also said the family was asking people “across the nation to keep an eye in case she has been taken outside of California.” “We are looking at all possibilities, hotels, metros, bus, train stations,” she added. It was not immediately clear how much money Kobayashi sent either of the recipients, who have not been accused of any wrongdoing. Taylor, who has since gone private on social media, did not respond to multiple requests for comment, the Sun said. There was no mention of Almendarez. The LAPD would only tell the Sun that it was still investigating the missing woman’s disappearance. The world is currently facing some of the biggest changes since the invention of the motor car at the end of the 19th century, with the shift towards electric power and development of autonomous technology meaning designs are changing at a rapid rate. However, Umesh Samani, Chairman of the Independent Motor Dealers Association , noted that these developments are not translating into more sales , with drivers more inclined to hang on to their current model. He explained: "People are definitely spending money to keep their cars on the road as opposed to upgrading. The majority just want a car which gets them from A to B, and it’ll stay that way. "People are already planning these things in their head. They know that down the road, there won’t be a choice of petrol , so they’re thinking ‘well, this could be my last one so I’ll keep it longer’." The introduction of new electric vehicles is largely encouraged by mandates imposed by Governments worldwide in a bid to lower the effects of climate change, particularly to improve air quality in urban environments. The UK is no exception, with the Government proposing a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel models in 2030, and plug-in hybrids in 2035. In addition, car manufacturers also face strict quotas surrounding the number of EVs they must sell, risking a £15,000 fine for each model left unsold. Whilst around a quarter of all new cars sold in November 2024 were electric, there are still a considerable percentage of motorists who do not wish to make the switch anytime soon. As a result, the average car on the UK roads is getting older. According to a study published in April 2024 by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the typical age of a car in the UK being nine years old. In particular, the study found that the average cost of new cars is increasing, with Auto Trader highlighting that motorists typically fork out more than £40,000 for their next model. Across the board, new car prices have risen significantly over the past few years due to a wide variety of reasons, particularly the rising cost of labour and tightening Government legislation surrounding safety features and emissions meaning companies are forced to add more technology into their models, reducing profit margins. Umesh noted that this is causing manufacturers to drop models that were once some of the most popular, particularly entry-level city cars like the Citroen C1 and Nissan Micra. He added: "People want little cars like that as a runabout, but they’re not making little sports cars any more. There aren’t many of what I call desirable cars on the market, and people aren’t particularly jumping up and down to buy EVs." Moreover the city cars that remain on sale have seen some of the most significant rises. In 2014, a Fiat 500 1.2 POP cost motorists £8,047. Today, the equivalent 500 1.0 Mild Hybrid costs more than double at £16,800. Whilst the amount of UK drivers interested in buying a new car is on the decline, the Government have vowed to rethink the current mandate surrounding electric vehicles in order to put less pressure on manufacturers. Under the current EV quota system, the SMMT predict that car companies will be fined a combined total of £1.8 billion, despite spending a further £4 billion discounting the cost of electric models to boost interest. A number of motoring experts have suggested that more incentives need to be put in place to make sure EVs are more affordable to consumers whilst also supporting businesses.
