I have heard a lot of false equivalences touted in my time, yet none quite as stark as the false equivalency the federal government managed to manufacture earlier this week when they decided to censure both Senator Lidia Thorpe and Senator Ralph Babet concurrently for transgressions they claimed warranted such action. In the case of Thorpe, the censure was in relation to her infamous protest at a reception for King Charles III — an action which, while loud and confronting, was based in truth-telling with regards to both Indigenous sovereignty and the harm that had been committed in the name of the Crown. In the case of Babet, it was due to a tweet in which he used racist, homophobic and ableist slurs in order to dare “woke ass freaks” to come at him. In no way are these actions of equivalence. Lidia Thorpe sees her Senate spot as the Greens ‘paying the rent’ Read More Yet when Senator Penny Wong took to the microphone to introduce the censure motions, drawing that false equivalence was exactly what she did. Wong claimed both motions were about the “standards of respect” expected of senators, and that both wayward senators were engaging in actions to create social media storms while offering nothing of substance to improve people’s lives. While this may have been the case with Babet’s disgusting tweet, perhaps if Wong had stopped and actually considered the substance contained within Thorpe’s protest words, she may have realised that improving the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples while educating the masses on some realities is exactly why she took that action. Disappointingly, but predictably, the champions of “free speech” that are the federal opposition appeared to forget this very core value, with the majority of them supporting both censure motions, and Senator Birmingham parroting Wong’s sentiments. To his credit, Queensland Nationals Senator Matt Canavan was the lone Coalition voice to question the motions and he voted against them — not on the content, but rather on the basis of process. Due to flight delays, neither Thorpe nor Babet were able to be present to hear the motions and defend themselves should they have wished to. They had only been informed that morning they were being censured. The timing of the vote was not the only problem of process. As Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi rose to express her dissent in relation to the censure against Thorpe, she was repeatedly shut down by Senate President Sue Lines. Why? Because she dared to highlight the racism inherent in the chamber, while pointing out that it did not have the right to dictate to an Aboriginal woman, or indeed any other people of colour, how they should engage in protest. It was a fair point. Not only did Faruqi remind the chamber of the fact it had failed to censure Pauline Hanson for a racist tweet aimed at her, she also highlighted that this same tweet was later deemed to be racial vilification via court proceedings. She’s not one to make a stand, even if it means she ends up voting against marriage equality despite being a lesbian woman who wished to marry her partner, and she certainly had no qualms in highlighting her compliance to the party line when, earlier this year, Senator Fatima Payman made a stance of unconditional support for the recognition of a Palestinian state while a genocide has been going on. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown could miss the 2025 season recovering from the right knee injury sustained in a loss to Cincinnati, coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday. McCarthy said Overshown has a “long road of rehab in front of him.” The second-year player tore multiple ligaments when a Bengals lineman crashed into his leg in the Cowboys' 27-20 loss Monday night. Overshown missed all of his rookie year in 2023 after tearing the ACL in his left knee in a preseason game. The latest injury came in his first game since a spectacular 23-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 27-20 victory over the New York Giants on Thanksgiving. “DeMarvion is getting ready to have a big surgery in front of him,” McCarthy said of the procedure planned this week. “His physical and football talent speaks for itself. And a few months later when Akshay proposed marriage to her and met her mother Dimple Kapadia for the first time, the latter had suggested them to try living together for a year before taking their relationship to the next level. And so, Akshay and Twinkle gave it a try and in 2001, the couple got married in a grand celebration. In 2018, Bollywood actor Neha Dhupia’s marriage to Angad Bedi broke stereotypes with their candid discussion about pre-marital pregnancy. By openly addressing societal taboos, they became symbols of changing attitudes toward relationships and family planning. Actors Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor were also in a live-in relationship for roughly five years, after which they finally tied the knot on April 14, 2022. While many criticised the couple for running away from their duties or subsequently badmouthing their families, this also highlights the importance of prioritising one's personal happiness and shared goals over societal expectations. 5. Parenting and work-life balance Since celebs' lives are constantly under public scrutiny, raising their children in a normal environment is yet another challenge which is unique to celebrity families but it is also kind-of reflective of broader societal pressures. For example, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan have navigated parenting their three children while maintaining their public personas and separate work-lives. Their openness about balancing work and family life resonates with many working parents. Many Indian celebs are also protecting their children's privacy by not letting paparazzi click their pictures or hiding them on social media. For instance, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli refrain from posting about their children online; they have also not allowed the press to post their kids' pictures. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas too don't share their daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas' pictures without blurring her face, in order to protect her privacy. While another user named plantbay1428 wrote in the same Reddit thread, "It makes me think about my future relationship with my children, if I do have them. I’m going to keep my posting about them to a minimum. Not going to block out their faces or freak out if they’re in a group photo or anything like that, but I won’t post if they do or say something silly. They have a right to decide what information about them is out there, even if I have privacy settings." DALLAS (AP) — The Washington Nationals will have the No. 1 overall pick in the amateur draft next summer after winning the lottery in a drawing of ping-pong balls at the winter meetings Tuesday. Unlike last year, when the Nationals were ineligible after initially coming out with the top spot, they will get to make the first pick in July in Atlanta, the site of the All-Star Game. Washington was ineligible for a top-six pick last year because the collective bargaining agreement states a team that pays into the revenue-sharing plan cannot have a lottery selection in back-to-back years. The Nationals chose outfielder Dylan Crews with the No. 2 pick in 2023. The Los Angeles Angels have the second pick for next summer. Seattle, Colorado, St. Louis and Pittsburgh round out the top six. A weighted lottery among the 18 teams that failed to make the playoffs this season determined the order of picks for the third year in a row. The Nationals went in with a 10.2% chance, the fourth-best odds, for getting the No. 1 pick. Colorado and Miami, both 100-loss teams, had the best odds at 22.45%, ahead of the Angels at 17.96%.
