If you’ve ever driven the Taconic State Parkway — and I do frequently — a reasonable argument can be made that New York should offer medals of valor to motorists and their vehicles that survive the experience intact. I’m thinking in particular of what I long ago, in a Wall Street Journal story, dubbed the “Wall of Death.” I take no credit for creativity; the terrifying feature named itself. The soaring sheer stone face, coming soon after the parkway transitions from three spacious modern lanes of traffic to two claustrophobic strips that harken back to the thoroughfare’s Depression-era origins, is sufficient to challenge the self-confidence of even the most seasoned driver. That goes especially in the rain. And with other cars passing you on a curve. And your spouse shouting at you to slow down. Were that not sufficient to rattle you, awaiting just at the bottom of this treacherous stretch of tarmac is a speed trap where New York state troopers are only too eager to pick off any motorist that the walls and curves haven’t gotten first. This is all a rather longwinded way of stating that if you survive the ordeal, there’s probably a pretty good chance that you have a full bladder and your mind is wandering to bathroom options. In that regard, I’d like to give a shout-out to at least one gas station just off the road. It’s the Mobil station on Bryant Pond Road, perhaps the first exit heading northbound after the parkway narrows. There are those who would accuse anybody already needing a bathroom break of being quitters, but there’s a good chance that if you’re driving up from New York City, especially on a Friday night, you already might have stewed in traffic for a harrowing hour or two by the time you reach that point. The Mobil station had three reasonably well cleaned unisex bathrooms (two outdoor, one indoor) as well as a well-stocked convenience store. It would be wrong amid the pressures and responsibilities of the holiday season to presume too much on your time, but I have decided views on whether it’s fair to use the opposite sex’s facilities if those of your assigned sex are unavailable at stores and restaurants that still distinguish between the two. I’ll save that for another day. But if you can hold out long enough to reach the Taste of New York market at Todd Hill in Dutchess County, you’re in for a refreshing new treat. I’m not referring to the abundant product selection from local merchants — pastry and sandwiches, cheese and honey — but to the comfort facilities. And, boy, have they taken their sweet time in coming! When the shop opened in 2014, it included two modern bathrooms with futurist all-in-one sinks, soap dispensers and hand dryers. I don’t know why, or exactly when, the staff designated only themselves worthy of such conveniences. But the traveling public was relegated to a platoon of portable toilets, while a separate structure devoted exclusively to the welfare of Taconic Parkway travelers and boasting, count ‘em, eight separate bathrooms was under construction. I lost consciousness of how long it took them to be completed. It felt like decades, but it was probably two-plus painful years. The sign promising completion soon started to feel like an inside joke. In the meantime, intrepid travelers were directed to those unheated outdoor Port-O-Sans. As such things go, they weren’t all that bad. But portable toilets that get emptied but once a week are by definition a journey into the underside of the human experience and best avoided. Yet dare I say it, the new bathrooms, opened in November, were almost worth the wait. They’re spacious, heated and include diaper-changing tables, walls of a calming blue hue, and both natural and artificial light. I don’t want to jinx it, but thus far none of the accommodations have been defaced by graffiti. I’d like to think that’s due to a couple of factors. The typical person capable of tackling the Taconic isn’t just an adept driver but also a serious soul, an environmentalist, the kind of upright citizen who leaves a National Park carrying out one more piece of litter than he or she brought in. The other reason is that the new bathrooms are just so darn attractive that only hoodlums would deface them, and most of those people prefer the New York State Thruway anyway. I suppose it’s only a matter of time until these totems of civic pride, rare proof of your tax dollars at good work, go the way of most public conveniences not located in some well-behaved Scandinavian country: riddled with political graffiti, bathroom humor, etc. So enjoy them while you can. Remarkably, they’re open every day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. And just for readers of this publication, here’s an inside tip: Four of the bathrooms are around the back of the structure, or the front if you’re going southbound, and most people remain unaware of them as yet. And if there’s anything better than a brand new bathroom, it’s one shining a bright green vacant sign. If that’s not in the holiday spirit, I don’t know what is.Public Storage stock underperforms Thursday when compared to competitorsHawkins stock soars to all-time high of $135.7 amid robust growth234win bet register

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he was caught off guard by reports early Tuesday that linebacker Shaq Barrett wants to unretire. The two-time Super Bowl winner signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in March, then abruptly announced his retirement on social media in July, just days before the start of Miami's training camp. “Just to be candid, obviously there's a reason why you target and sign somebody," McDaniel said Tuesday afternoon. “I was fully caught off guard, or caught by surprise this morning as I found out.” McDaniel indicated the Dolphins have not had any conversations with Barrett recently. Miami holds the 32-year-old’s contractual rights. ESPN first reported the news. “It was kind of news as you guys got it,” McDaniel said. He also said he hasn't had a chance to think about Barrett potentially rejoining the team, and that his immediate focus is on Miami's Thursday night game at Green Bay. “The team is counting on me to think about the Packers,” he said. "I'll get with (GM) Chris (Grier), and we'll work through that. There's a ton of implications that go along with it in terms of team and roster stuff, so we'll work through that as we just got the news today.” Barrett has 400 tackles, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles and three interceptions in nine seasons — four with Denver and five with Tampa Bay. He was a second-team All-Pro with the Buccaneers in 2019, with a league-high 19 1/2 sacks. The Dolphins waived veteran safety Marcus Maye on Tuesday and activated rookie safety Patrick McMorris from injured reserve. Maye, who signed with the Dolphins in June, played in 11 games with three starts for Miami this season. He had 30 tackles and a tackle for loss. He could re-sign to the team's practice squad if he clears waivers. Maye previously played for New Orleans, but was cut in a money-saving move in March after two seasons with the Saints. Maye's release made room on the roster for McMorris, who was drafted in the sixth round by Miami in April. He began the season on injured reserve because of a calf injury. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Any Texas or Texas A&M player has heard the lore of the rivalry between the two schools, a grudge match that dates to 1894. But for more than a decade — two generations of college football players — that's all it has been: Ghostly memories of great games and great plays made by heroes of the distant past. That changes this week when one of college football's great rivalries is reborn. Third-ranked Texas (10-1, 6-1) and No. 20 Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2) meet Saturday night for the first time since 2011, with a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game on the line . “Guys that have been in my position and bleed burnt orange, they have not gotten to play this game,” said Texas fourth-year junior safety Michael Taaffe, who grew up in Austin. “Remember them when you step on Kyle Field.” For Aggies fans, who have carried the misery of Texas' 27-25 win in 2011, getting the Longhorns back in front of a frenzied crowd in College Station is a chance for some serious payback. “I was born and raised an Aggie, so I’ve been dreaming about playing in this game my whole life,” Texas A&M offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III said. Zuhn played high school football in Colorado, but his parents and grandparents attended A&M. At SEC media days back in August, Zuhn said his family would turn Texas gear upside down in stores. He keeps a picture of a longhorn in his room, hanging upside down, of course. “It should be the most amazing atmosphere that I’ve ever experienced,” Zuhn said. "I can’t wait for that, and I feel bad for Texas having to play in that." Texas players said they are ready. “That place is going to be rocking,” Texas senior cornerback Jahdae Barron said. “It's good to go on the road and play in hostile environments.” The Longhorns have overcome big and loud road crowds before. They won at Alabama in 2023. They won at Michigan and Arkansas, another old rival, this year. The Longhorns have won 10 in a row on an opponent’s home field. “When the hate is on us, we love it. We enjoy it,” Taaffe said. But some former Texas players say the current group has faced nothing like what awaits them in College Station. Playing at Texas A&M is more than just noise and a lot of “Horns down” hand signals. The “Aggie War Hymn” fight song calls for Aggies to “Saw varsity’s horns off." Beating Texas is their passion, said former Longhorns All-American offensive lineman Dan Neil, who won at Texas A&M in in 1995. He calls that win one of the best of his career. “I was done showering and getting ready to leave, and their fans were still standing outside the locker room screaming and throwing things,” he said. “The (Texas) players have no idea what they are walking into. They have no clue. No one on that team has walked into that stadium in burnt orange.” The rivalry broke up when Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012. The Aggies have twice finished tied for second but have otherwise found little success there. Texas is in its first year in the SEC and has smashed its way to the top. Texas is the only SEC team with one loss this late in the season, which would make beating Texas that much sweeter for A&M. “The hype is definitely saying it's a rivalry. History says it's a rivalry, but for us, it's the football game we have this week,” Texas senior center Jake Majors said. “It's important for us to not let the environment, the game, get the best of us. ... I get to go out there and play not only for me and my team, but for the guys who came before me, so that's a true honor to have.” Even though the game hasn't been played since 2011, there has always been an element of the rivalry simmering under the surface, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko said. Elko is in his first year as the Aggies' coach, but he was the Texas A&M defensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher from 2018-2021. “Even though it hasn’t been played, it just doesn’t feel like it’s ever really left the fabric. I really don’t think it’s as removed from the psyche as maybe it feels,” Elko said. “I think our kids are very much aware of what this is all about.” Rieken reported from College Station, Texas. The Grammy-winning country legend has announced a nationwide casting search for a play titled Dolly: An Original Musical . In a video posted to TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, Parton made the announcement and explained the auditioning process as clips from all stages of her career played. "I want to give you the chance to help me bring my story to Broadway — and maybe even play me!" Parton said, encouraging everyone to try out for the opportunity. "This show is a celebration of my music, my life, and all the amazing people who've been with me along the way," she continued. “We're looking for talented performers who can capture the spirit of my journey, whether you're an experienced theater professional or an undiscovered gem with that little special something." A post shared by Dolly Parton (@dollyparton) A press release from the show elaborated that the musical is looking for "performers of all ages to portray Parton at different stages of her incredible life." Applicants are required to record a one-minute video of themselves singing their favorite Parton song and post it to social media with the tag #SearchForDolly. Applicants must also complete the application form on the musical's site. The application window will close on January 12, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET and evaluation of the candidates will begin. The Dolly: An Original Musical casting team will then invite any promising applicants to New York City for a formal audition process. In January, Parton got candid about her dream to have a Broadway show about her life. “Right now, I'm working on my life story as a musical, and so going on Broadway and opening my show on Broadway, that's been a biggie [goal] in my mind for many, many years,” she told People Magazine at the time. “That'd be the one that I want to make certain I get done while I'm still kicking, while I'm around to stay involved in it.” The Broadway bio musical will be packed with both classic Parton songs and new releases she wrote specifically for the show.Meet to focus on Chiang Mai flood recovery

NoneMIAMI — A Miami-Dade traffic hearing officer dismissed Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill’s citations after the Miami-Dade Police officer who cited him failed to show up in court, in an incident that led to Hill getting handcuffed and pinned to the ground outside Hard Rock Stadium. Miami-Dade Police issued Hill a $179 careless driving violation and a $129 seat belt violation during a Sept. 8 traffic stop hours before the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars at the stadium. The videos of Hill being detained, filmed by passersby, went viral after Miami-Dade Police officer Danny Torres yanked Hill by the back of his head from his McLaren 720S, pinned him to the ground with a knee and cuffed the Dolphins superstar. “Where all the internet cops now,” Hill posted Tuesday on the social media platform X. Hill was not at Dolphins practice Tuesday; he was excused for unrelated family reasons, the team said. The Miami-Dade Police officer who wrote the citations, Manuel Batista, didn’t show up for a scheduled hearing on Monday. That resulted in Miami-Dade Traffic Infraction Hearing Officer Patricia Henrys dismissing Hill’s citations for lack of prosecution, court records show. Officers should be disciplined: Hill’s attorney Hill’s attorney, Julius Collins, said in a statement to the Miami Herald that police officers’ no-show “evidences their knowledge of wrongdoing.” “As anticipated, the traffic citations against Tyreek Hill were dismissed, “ Collins said in the Tuesday statement. “Police officers should not issue citations unless they are willing to testify in court, under oath, with respect to the same ... These officers should be disciplined for their failure to appear.” MD Police: Officer not showing up was ‘oversight’ Batista’s failure to show up at the hearing was an “oversight on his behalf,” Miami-Dade Police said in a statement Tuesday. “The Miami-Dade Police Department is aware that a docket of citations issued to multiple individuals including the non-criminal citations issued to Mr. Tyreek Hill have been dismissed because the officer did not attend the hearing,” the police agency said. “A citation dismissed due to this reason does not indicate that the citation held no merit. An internal review as to why the officer did not appear in court has revealed an oversight on his behalf. This matter will be handled administratively.” Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, the union representing Miami-Dade Police officers, said police officers often have other commitments that preclude them from showing up at traffic citation hearings. “Officers quite often find themselves in conflict with other cases,” Stahl said. “But, in this particular case, I don’t know what that conflict was.” Batista’s personnel profile, obtained by the Miami Herald, shows he has used force twice and faced four complaints since joining the force in October 2019, though only one led to action. He has also received five commendations for his dedication and not taking a sick day. Last year, Batista earned $153,000 as a county police officer. Batista was one of four officers involved in pulling Hill over. He also confronted Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, who pulled over to check on Hill. Batista ordered Smith to hand over his license and cited him twice: a $129 fine for having an expired tag and a $179 fine for failing to obey a traffic control device. Miami-Dade Traffic Infraction Hearing Officer Thomas Cobitz dismissed both of Smith’s citations on Friday. The failing to obey a traffic control device was dropped for “wrong statute cited.” Cobitz dismissed the expired tag citation without giving a reason why, court records show. Veteran officer still on administrative leave Miami-Dade Police officer Danny Torres, a 27-year-veteran, was put on administrative leave by Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels after she reviewed the police body-camera footage from the controversial traffic stop. Torres, who earned about $171,000 last year, including $39,000 in overtime pay, was the officer who pulled Hill out of his McLaren and pushed him to the ground, while the other officers helped restrain Hill, according to the body-camera video released by the police. While Hill was lying flat on his stomach in the street, Torres pressed his palm onto the back of his neck and kneed him in the back, the footage shows. Torres also handcuffed Dolphins veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who also stopped to check on Hill. He was released without being cited. As of Tuesday, Miami-Dade Police said Torres was still on administrative duty and an internal affairs investigation was ongoing. Previous disciplinary issues Torres has been suspended six times for disciplinary issues in his 27-year career with the department, according to personnel records released in September by the police department. Miami-Dade Police employee profiles provide only general summaries of disciplinary actions. Officer Torres has faced six complaints, 10 disciplinary actions and 13 incidents involving force. From 2002 to 2022, Torres used various levels of force, including pushing, pulling, striking and hitting, sometimes causing injuries like bruises and abrasions, though it’s unclear who was injured, records show. Of his six complaints, three were deemed credible. In 2014, he was found to have been discourteous and used force. In 2015, he faced another discourtesy complaint and in 2018, an improper procedure allegation was sustained. ©2024 Miami Herald. Visit miamiherald.com . Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

Video footage that circulated on social media just days before the anniversary of the Hamas terror attacks showed a man attacking the Jewish memorial in Hove, East Sussex. However, Heidi Bachram, who reported the incident, claimed that officers told her they would not be treating it as a targeted attack on Jewish people or a hate crime, despite a man handing himself in to police over the video. They said the man would be given a conditional caution for criminal damage and the case would not be passed on to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as a potential hate crime, she added. Sussex Police insisted on Friday that the case was “still ongoing” and a final decision had not been made. But Ms Bachram claimed officers who visited her home on Thursday said they couldn’t “prove” the incident was a hate crime – a decision that would ultimately sit with the CPS if it was passed on. The 52-year-old said officers updated her on the case after a man had been interviewed on a voluntary basis having handed himself in. She told The Telegraph: “They said that he claimed his friend had just died and that the memorial had triggered him because the flowers triggered his grief over the friend that had died.” Ms Bachram, a Brighton resident, added that officers had also told her the man involved was suffering from poor mental health at the time. She said: “They played it like it was not targeted, it wasn’t about the memorial, it wasn’t about Jews, it wasn’t about Israel – even though in the video you can hear him arguing with a guy that intervened and he says ‘do you know what they’re doing’ and he says ‘murdering’ later on. “They told me they couldn’t prove it was a hate crime and that they want to give him a conditional caution for criminal damage instead. “They don’t want to pass it to the CPS. They’re calling it criminal damage, but there is no hate element to it.” A Sussex Police spokesman said: “On Oct 4, police received a report of a Jewish memorial being damaged in Palmeira Square, Hove. “Officers arrested a 58-year-old man on Oct 7 on suspicion of racially/religiously aggravated criminal damage. He was bailed pending further enquiries. “On Nov 8, a 78-year-old man attended Brighton police station and was interviewed under caution in relation to the offence. Triumph Gold (CVE:TIG) Trading 35.3% Higher – Here’s Why

None* TSX ends down 0.02% at 25,405.14 * Energy falls 2.3%; oil settles 0.2% lower * Bombardier shares lose 9.3% * Technology advances 1.1% By Nikhil Sharma and Fergal Smith Nov 26 - Canada's stock market inched lower on Tuesday, weighed by declines for energy, railroad and auto parts manufacturing shares, after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump vowed to impose big tariffs on top trading partners, including Canada. The S&P/TSX composite index ended down 5.21 points, or 0.02%, at 25,405.14, its second straight day of modest declines after posting a record closing high on Friday. Trump on Monday pledged big tariffs on the United States' three largest trading partners - Canada, Mexico and China - in a move that helped push the Canadian dollar to a 4-1/2-year low against its U.S. counterpart. "Tariffs dump sand in the gears of the global economy and markets hate them," Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at SIA Wealth Management, said in a note. Officials from Mexico, Canada and China warned that Trump's tariff threat would harm the economies of all involved. "These types of threats are mostly designed to extract concessions," said Angelo Kourkafas, investment strategist at Edward Jones Investments, adding they are, however, "impacting sentiment in the short term." Canada sends about 75% of its exports to the United States, including oil. Trump's plan does not exempt crude oil from trade penalties, two sources familiar with the plan told Reuters. U.S. crude futures settled 0.25% lower at $68.77 a barrel after Israel agreed to a ceasefire deal with Lebanon, while the Toronto market's energy sector was down 2.3%. Industrials fell 1%, weighed by declines for railroad shares. Automotive suppliers also lost ground, with Magna International Inc falling 4.7%. Business jet manufacturer Bombardier Inc lost 9.3%. The TSX is set to rise in 2025 but returns could slow after investors potentially front-loaded much of the positive news, a Reuters poll found. Helping to limit the decline on Tuesday, technology rose 1.1% and financials added 0.5%. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
