Tinubu made this claim during his first Presidential Media Chat on Monday night, December 23, stating that Obasanjo's opposition to the creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State many years ago was a major setback. Tinubu reflected on his tenure as governor of Lagos State in the early 2000s, highlighting the challenges he faced in enhancing local governance through the creation of 37 LCDAs. He said: “Today, we have autonomy for local government. Some of you will remember my lamentation and my argument with Obasanjo about the need for grassroots development when I created 37 local council development areas for Lagos State.” However, the federal government under Obasanjo's leadership opposed the initiative, questioning its legality and withholding funds earmarked for local governments in Lagos State. This move caused significant financial strain on grassroots development. Source: Legit.ngTORONTO — Canada's main stock index pushed higher to end Monday up almost 150 points on light trading action, while U.S. stock markets also gained ahead of the Christmas break. "Today is a quiet pre-Christmas Day of trading," said Kevin Burkett, a portfolio manager at Victoria, B.C.-based Burkett Asset Management. While markets in both Canada and the U.S. were mild, Burkett suggests watching the markets closely during the holiday season, a contrast to what's typically a sleepy period for markets. "We're continuing to watch markets very closely here because you've got some tectonic plate shifting in terms of the macroeconomic backdrop," he said. "It's all the political conversations both in Canada and in the U.S." Burkett added fiscal policy seems to be disconnected from monetary policy in the post-pandemic period. "The fiscal policy may shift and that shift absolutely has market implications both in the short and long term," he said. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 149.50 points at 24,748.98. Statistics Canada released its latest numbers on Canada's economic growth, up 0.3 per cent in October — driven by the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector. The loonie continued its slide, trading for 69.47 cents US compared with 69.61 cents US on Friday. The telecom sector was the biggest loser at the closing on TSX, which Burkett attributed to "tax loss selling happening at the end of the year." Competition Bureau Canada announced on Monday it was suing Rogers Communications Inc. for allegedly making misleading claims about its infinite wireless plans. The stock price for Rogers, which is hovering near 52-week lows, fell 0.7 per cent on Monday. Meanwhile, BCE was down almost 1.4 per cent and Telus dropped 0.9 per cent. Burkett suggested the day's poor performance among telecom companies was likely tax loss selling since it's almost the end of the year. "It's been a tough year for the communication services sector," he said. South of the border, communications services was the top-performing sector, led by large-cap tech companies. Several big technology companies helped support the gains, including chip companies Nvidia and Broadcom. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 66.69 points at 42,906.95. The S&P 500 index was up 43.22 points at 5,974.07, while the Nasdaq composite was up 192.29 points at 19,764.89. The February crude oil contract was down 22 cents at US$69.24 per barrel and the February natural gas contract was down six cents at US$3.35 per mmBTU. The February gold contract was down US$16.90 at US$2,628.20 an ounce and the March copper contract was down one cent at US$4.09 a pound. NoneASX copper ( ) is marching higher today. Shares in the dual-listed Canadian-based (ASX: XKO) copper miner, which joined the ASX on 8 April, closed yesterday trading for $10.58. In morning trade on Thursday, shares are changing hands for $10.77 apiece, up 1.8%. For some context, the ASX 300 is up 0.2% at this same time. As you can see on the chart above, this puts the Capstone Copper share price up 9.3% since it began trading on the Aussie exchange. And according to the analysts at Citi, the ASX copper stock could charge far higher from here as we head into 2025. Commenting on Citi's positive outlook for Capstone Copper, analyst Kate McCutcheon said (quoted by ), "We see positive earnings on execution of growth projects and upward revisions to copper prices." The broker commenced coverage on the ASX copper stock with a buy rating and a share price target of $13.60. That's 26.3% above the current Capstone Copper share price. Part of Citi's bullish outlook stems from its forecast US$10,000 per tonne copper price. The red metal is currently trading for US$9,217 per tonne, having kicked off 2024 at US$8,545 per tonne. Copper prices reached highs above US$10,890 per tonne on 21 May. With Citi expecting global demand for the red metal to remain robust amid the world's ongoing push to low-carbon energy sources, the broker forecasts prices will rebound in 2025. And Capstone could be well-placed to take advantage. McCutcheon said that relative to other ASX copper stocks, the miner's growth ambitions of 400,000 tonnes per year is "a standout". She highlighted the importance for Capstone to deliver on its guidance under its incoming CEO. Capstone reported its September quarterly on 31 October. The ASX copper stock achieved copper production of 47,460 tonnes at cash costs of $2.83 per pound for the three months. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation ( ) came in at $120.8 million for Q3 2024, up from $62.8 million for Q3 2023. The 92% year on year earnings boost was driven by higher copper production and a higher realised copper price. Commenting on the improved results delivered by the ASX copper stock, CEO John MacKenzie said: The third quarter marked an important step in the transformation of our business, with tangible delivery on our peer leading growth. Our operations in Chile exhibited meaningful milestones... We expect Q4 to be our strongest quarter of the year, providing a glimpse of the future Capstone with a larger production base and lower unit operating costs.

How PDA football's 'golden' season came to fruition with another state titleWASHINGTON The UN Security Council voiced concern Friday about the situation in Afghanistan. "The members of the Security Council are deeply concerned with the continuing negative impact of the Taliban’s policies and practices that restrict the enjoyment by women and girls of their human rights and fundamental freedoms on Afghanistan’s peace, stability and development and its people," it said in a statement. The members gathered Dec. 12 for a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan, where they reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Afghanistan. The members emphasized the need to ensure the "full, equal, meaningful and safe" participation of women and girls in Afghanistan for the country’s future and long-term development, and urged the Taliban to "swiftly" reverse these policies and practices. According to the statement, the members also expressed their "deep concern" for the dire economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan. Reaffirming that terrorism constitutes "one of the most serious threats" to peace and security in Afghanistan, the members called on the Taliban to take "active measures" to strengthen its efforts to combat terrorism. They stressed the important role that the UN will continue to play in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan, and expressed appreciation for the UN’s long-term commitment to support Afghans. They emphasized the importance of developing a political roadmap to be discussed with all relevant stakeholders to achieve an Afghanistan at peace with itself and its neighbors, according to the statement. The Taliban returned to rule Afghanistan in August 2021 after more than two decades of war. The interim setup continues to impose numerous rules and policies, violating a range of fundamental rights of women and girls, Afghanistan is also facing hunger and the risk of malnutrition and poverty, a near-collapse of the national public health system and natural disasters.GSA Capital Partners LLP Has $304,000 Stock Position in Exelixis, Inc. After officially announcing the Christian Walker signing earlier on Monday, the Astros have designated infielder Grae Kessinger for assignment to open a spot for Walker on the 40-man roster (per Chandler Rome of The Athletic ). Kessinger, 27, was Houston’s second-round pick in the 2019 draft. The grandson of six-time All-Star Don Kessinger, he showed off excellent bat-to-ball skills in college, hitting .330 with a .904 OPS in his junior year at Ole Miss. However, evaluators had concerns about his ability to keep up against major-league pitching. There were also rumblings he wouldn’t be able to stick at shortstop. Indeed, Kessinger struggled at the plate over his first few years in the Astros farm system, and he played all around the infield as the organization looked to maximize his versatility. After his promotion to Triple-A in 2023, Kessinger seemed to take a step forward at the plate. He improved his walk-to-strikeout ratio and put up a .832 OPS and a 107 wRC+. It was enough to earn him a call-up to the big league club that summer. However, he failed to make an offensive impact at the major league level, going 8-for-40 with 12 strikeouts, good for a .614 OPS and 73 wRC+ in 26 games. Despite his big league struggles in 2023, Kessinger made the Astros’ Opening Day roster in 2024. Unfortunately, he continued to come up short against MLB pitching. In 25 plate appearances, he didn’t manage a single hit. He walked thrice, reached once on a hit-by-pitch, and struck out seven times. To make matters worse, he regressed at Triple-A as well. His OPS dropped by more than 100 points from the year before, while his wRC+ fell to a well-below-average 83. Considering all his struggles at the plate, it’s hardly surprising to see Kessinger DFA’d. However, he can still provide value with his versatility – he’s played all four infield positions at the MLB level – and there could certainly be a team that sees enough potential in the former second-round pick to claim him off of waivers. If not, the Astros will have the option to send him outright to the minors and keep him in the organization. This article first appeared on MLB Trade Rumors and was syndicated with permission.

Coote was sacked earlier this month after the emergence of a video in which he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said that a thorough investigation had concluded he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable”. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” PGMOL’s statement on December 9 added. Coote had the right to appeal against the decision but PA understands the Nottinghamshire referee has decided not to. The video which triggered PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct first came to public attention on November 11. In it, Coote is asked for his views on a Liverpool match where he has just been fourth official, and describes them as “s***”. He then describes Klopp as a “c***”, and, asked why he felt that way, Coote says the German had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown” and had accused him of lying. “I have got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant, so I do my best not to speak to him,” Coote said. Later in the video, Coote again refers to Klopp, this time as a “German c***”. The Football Association opened its own investigation into that video, understood to be centred on that last comment and whether Coote’s reference to Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules. The investigation by PGMOL which led to Coote’s contract being terminated is also understood to have looked at another video which appeared to show Coote snorting a white powder, purportedly during Euro 2024 where he was one of the assistant VARs for the tournament. European football’s governing body UEFA also appointed an ethics investigator to look into the matter.
