A new app called RapidDeploy has a video feature that allows 911 responders to see and hear what's going on at the scene of an emergency. 911 Dispatcher : Walton County, 911. What's the address of the emergency? Caller : We're out in the water right off of Dolphin Cove. My husband fell in the water off the boat. A woman frantically called 911 after her husband went overboard from a boat off the coast of Florida. And thanks to the video feature in RapidDeploy allowing 911 dispatchers to see and hear what's going on at the scene, they were able to help the woman start her boat, and guide her to the location of the original call to rescue her husband. Apps like RapidDeploy are serving as vital reinforcement for 911 telecommunicators at call centers across the country. Debbie de la Fuente, who has been on the job for 18 years in Arlington, Virginia showed ABC's Elizabeth Schulze how the app works. "I'm going to go ahead and send you a video request," she said. This will pinpoint a caller's exact location and initiate a video call. "I'm going to accept it and there we go. So now you can see me, and if I was at the scene of a crime, you could also see what's happening in real-time," said Schulze. "Yes, which is great for us if we need to obtain a good description of a suspect," said De la Fuente. The new technology has been deployed at over 1,500 911 call centers in 25 states, as they face intense staffing shortages. It's a critical backup in a job where every second counts. A recent national report found a staggering number of unfilled positions at 911 call centers, with an average 25% vacancy rate nationwide. With this technology, there is no app to download. The 911 operator sends you a link and you simply click on it to activate video sharing. When you hang up, the 911 dispatcher no longer has access to your camera or your location.

New Delhi: INS Tushil, India’s newest stealth missile frigate, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 9 at the Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s Kaliningrad, is set to reach India’s western coast by mid-February. According to the defence officials, the warship will be a part of the Mumbai-based Western Fleet. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who attended the commissioning ceremony, hailed INS Tushil as a "proud testament" to India's growing maritime power. He also described the event as a "significant milestone" in strengthening the long-standing friendship between India and Russia. As part of efforts to strengthen naval cooperation and bilateral ties between India and Morocco, INS Tushil made a stop in Morocco’s Casablanca, on December 27, as it made its way to India. The warship will also conduct anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Guinea, located off the coast of West Africa before it reaches India. In October 2023, India and the European Union held their first naval exercise in the Gulf of Guinea aimed at boosting maritime security and fighting piracy. INS Sumedha, an offshore patrol vessel, joined forces with Italian, Spanish, and French warships during the exercise. INS Tushil is an upgraded Krivak III class frigate, part of Project 1135.6, and is one of six such vessels built for the Indian Navy. It is equipped with advanced weapons like BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Shtil surface-to-air missiles, and an upgraded medium-range anti-air gun system. The warship is also designed for operations across air, surface, underwater, and electromagnetic domains. Notably, INS Tushil has around 26% indigenous content, which is double that of the previous Teg-class frigates. Contributions came from 33 Indian firms, including Bharat Electronics Limited, BrahMos Aerospace, and Nova Integrated Systems, a subsidiary of Tata Advanced Systems Limited. INS Tushil is part of a $2.5 billion deal with Russia for four more Krivak/Talwar class stealth frigates for the Indian Navy. Two of these ships are being built at the Yantar shipyard in Russia, while the remaining two will be constructed at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) with technology transfer from Russia. The second frigate, named Tamal, is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy in mid-2025. INS Tushil is specifically designed for blue-water operations, making it capable of handling the full spectrum of naval warfare. The ship is equipped with advanced technologies, including an electronic warfare and communication suite to enhance its operational capabilities. New Delhi: Delhi BJP on Monday unveiled a " political chargesheet ", targeting AAP's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and his party. The document pointed to the alleged failures of Delhi govt and instances of corruption involving its ministers. Releasing the "chargesheet", senior BJP functionary Anurag Thakur accusing Kejriwal of turning Delhi into a "corruption lab" through a series of "scams". Delhi BJP has set up a "chargesheet committee" that has, so far, issued detailed reports listing the alleged failures of AAP MLAs, ahead of the assembly polls. "What kind of a party comes to power promising to give a corruption-free govt, but is involved in 8-9 scams related to liquor policy, Delhi Jal Board, DTC, Waqf Board, and so on?" Thakur asked. Claiming that BJP would oust AAP from Delhi, Thakur gave the slogan, "Ghotale Pe Ghotala, Kejriwal Ne Banaya Delhi Ko Bhrashtachar Ki Prayogshala (Kejriwal turned Delhi into a laboratory of corruption with scams)." The chargesheet stated a list of "unfulfilled" promises of AAP govt, including clean water, 24-hour tap water supply, world-class health infrastructure, a clean Yamuna, pollution-free Delhi, and a corruption-free state. It claimed: "The deadly AQI has permanently damaged the lungs of Delhi children, and Yamuna has become dirtier and stinkier than before". The chargesheet further stated that the CM, deputy CM, five ministers, an MP and 10 MLAs had gone to jail over corruption and criminal charges. It alleged that, on one hand, AAP did "drama" on women's safety and then beat up its own MP at the CM's residence and, on the other, it created "fake drama" over Rohingya, but didn't implement NRC. The chargesheet alleged that Delhi govt didn't implement PM Awas Yojna in the capital, which allowed affordable housing, but Kejriwal went about making "a lavish residence for himself". Thakur targeted AAP and Kejriwal over education and health too, alleging that they failed to open new mohalla clinics and hospitals and did not use Centre's funds to boost the city's healthcare infrastructure. He charged that the smog tower in Connaught Place, which was supposed to provide relief from air pollution, was lying defunct although AAP govt spent crores of rupees on its publicity. Thakur alleged that while AAP supported "anti-national" forces, Kejriwal questioned India's surgical strikes. He claimed that AAP got the support of "Khalistani elements" during Punjab polls. He questioned Delhi govt over the "migration" of people during Covid. Thakur said, "During the pandemic, Kejriwal govt failed to provide even basic facilities to workers from UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, Bengal and other states working in Delhi. Instead, they were forced to leave the city." He added: "Promises were made to establish free clinics and large hospitals in Delhi, but today, 70% of patients are forced to seek treatment in private hospitals." Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said claimed that it was "crucial to dislodge AAP's half-hearted govt and replace it with a complete BJP govt in Delhi, so that under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, a double-engine govt could rescue Delhi from misgovernance". The platform is once again bringing influencers to Washington, this time to lobby members of Congress to reject a fast-moving bill that would force TikTok's Beijing-based parent company to sell or be banned in the United States. On Tuesday, some influencers began a two-day advocacy event in support of TikTok, which arranged their trip ahead of a House floor vote on the legislation on Wednesday. But unlike a similar lobbying event the company put together last March when talks of a TikTok ban reached a fever pitch, this year’s effort appeared more rushed as the company scrambles to counter the legislation, which advanced rapidly on Capitol Hill. Summer Lucille, a TikTok content creator with 1.4 million followers who is visiting Washington this week, said if TikTok is banned, she “don’t know what it will do” to her business, a plus-sized boutique in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It will be devastating,” Lucille said in an interview arranged by the platform. In an unusual showing of bipartisanship, a House panel unanimously approved the measure last week. President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation if lawmakers pass it. But it’s unclear what will happen in the Senate, where several bills aimed at banning TikTok have stalled. The legislation faces other roadblocks. Former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump, who holds sway over both House and Senate Republicans, has voiced opposition to the bill, saying it would empower Meta-owned Facebook, which he continues to lambast over his 2020 election loss. The bill also faces pushback from some progressive lawmakers in the House as well as civil liberties groups who argue it infringes on the First Amendment. TikTok could be banned if ByteDance, the parent company, doesn’t sell its stakes in the platform and other applications it owns within six months of the bill’s enactment. The fight over the platform takes place as U.S.-China relations have shifted to that of strategic rivalry, especially in areas such as advanced technologies and data security, seen as essential to each country’s economic prowess and national security. The shift, which started during the Trump years and has continued under Biden, has placed restrictions on export of advanced technologies and outflow of U.S. monies to China, as well as access to the U.S. market by certain Chinese businesses. The Biden administration also has cited human rights concerns in blacklisting a number of Chinese companies accused of assisting the state surveillance campaign against ethnic minorities. TikTok isn’t short on lobbyists. Its Beijing-based parent company ByteDance has a strong lobbying apparatus in Washington that includes dozens of lobbyists from well-known consulting and legal firms as well as influential insiders, such as former members of Congress and ex-aides to powerful lawmakers, according to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will also be in Washington this week and plans to meet with lawmakers, according to a company spokesperson who said Chew’s visit was previously scheduled. But influencers, who have big followings on social media and can share personal stories of how the platform boosted their businesses — or simply gave them a voice — are still perhaps one of the most powerful tools the company has in its arsenal. A TikTok spokesperson said dozens of influencers will attend the two-day event, including some who came last year. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about how many new people would be attending this year’s lobbying blitz. The company is briefing them ahead of meetings with their representatives and media interviews. Lucille, who runs the boutique in North Carolina, says has seen a substantial surge in revenue because of her TikTok page. The 34-year-old began making TikTok content focusing on plus-sized fashion in March 2022, more than a decade after she started her business. She quickly amassed thousands of followers after posting a nine-second video about her boutique. Because of her popularity on the platform, her business has more online exposure and customers, some of whom have visited from as far as Europe. She says she also routinely hears from followers who are finding support through her content about fashion and confidence. JT Laybourne, an influencer who also came to Washington, said he joined TikTok in early 2019 after getting some negative comments on videos he posted on Instagram while singing in the car with his children. Laybourne, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, said he was attracted to the short-form video platform because it was easy to create videos that contained music. Like Lucille, he quickly gained traction on the app. He says he also received more support from TikTok users, who reacted positively to content he produced on love and positivity. Laybourne says the community he built on the platform rallied around his family when he had to undergo heart surgery in 2020. Following the surgery, he said he used the platform to help raise $1 million for the American Heart Association in less than two years. His family now run an apparel company that gets most of its traffic from TikTok. “I will fight tooth-and-nail for this app,” he said. But whether the opposition the company is mounting through lobbyists or influencers will be enough to derail the bill is yet to be seen. On Tuesday, House lawmakers received a briefing on national security concerns regarding TikTok from the FBI, Justice Department and intelligence officials. AP Journalist Didi Tang contributed to this report. This story was originally published on March 12, 2024. It was updated on December 23, 2024 to clarify a quote by TikTok content creator Summer Lucille. As the countdown to the Champions League match ticks closer, the excitement and speculation surrounding Real Madrid's lineup only intensify.
