Press Taylor had a three word response to playing the Texans on SundayWhooping cough cases are up in Cowlitz County, especially among high school students, County Health Officer Steve Krager reported at a Board of Health meeting Tuesday. Cowlitz County has the second highest rate of whooping cough in the state after Clark County, Krager said. So far this year, 37 cases have been reported. This is similar to pre-pandemic levels, but cases have been lower than usual the past few years, with only three cases in 2020 and none from 2021-2023. Some local cases are likely because of the frequent travel between Cowlitz and Clark counties, he said. Krager recommended that people get tested if they have a cough that lasts longer than seven days, especially if it causes whooping, gagging or vomiting. Infants with a persistent cough should also be tested. He said people should also ensure that they are up to date on whooping cough vaccines, especially if they expect to have contact with infants. "We know we’re missing cases," Krager said. "Not everyone who has (whooping cough) is getting tested, and we can only find the ones that are tested and reported." The per-capita infection rate in Cowlitz County is about double the statewide rate. Statewide, most cases are occurring in children under 1 year old, but 25 of the 37 cases in the county were teenagers between 14 and 18 years old. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a bacterial respiratory infection mainly spread through droplets from coughing. The severity of the cough causes some sick people, especially young children, to make the distinctive whooping sound the disease is named after. While most people are able to shake off the infection without much trouble, young children are especially vulnerable to it, Krager said. About one third of children under 1 year who get whooping cough are hospitalized, and in rare cases it can lead to death. Immunocompromised people may also experience more serious symptoms. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, and it typically takes five days before a person is declared non-infectious. Household members or immunocompromised people who have had contact with a sick person may also be prescribed antibiotics as a precaution.
