After a far-right pro-Russia candidate secured a surprise lead in Romania's presidential election Monday, the eastern European NATO member is bracing for a high-stakes parliamentary vote on Sunday, amid fears it could bring about a strategic shift in the country. Calin Georgescu was in pole position with almost 23 percent after the first round of voting, a political earthquake in the country of 19 million people that has so far resisted nationalist appeals that have gained traction in Hungary and Slovakia. His victory ahead of centre-right mayor Elena Lasconi -- who scored 19.18 percent -- ended the hopes of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to compete for the presidency in the December runoff. After coming third at 19.15, Ciolacu said his Social Democratic Party (PSD) won't challenge the narrow result, and announced his resignation as party leader. Experts say the far right's surprise success could affect the parliamentary elections later this week, and even influence the chances of forming a future government. In the runoff ballot on December 8, Lasconi will face Georgescu, a NATO critic who in the past expressed his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Georgescu's popularity surged ahead of the vote with a viral TikTok campaign calling for an end to aid for Ukraine, which shares a 650-kilometre (400-mile) border with Romania. In a first reaction on his YouTube channel, the 62-year-old independent candidate insisted "there is no East or West", stressing that neutrality was "absolutely necessary". "I am not an extremist, I am not a fascist -- I am a Romanian who loves his country," he said in reference to media reports that "tried to portray" him in a wrongful way. For his rival Lasconi, the upcoming runoff represents "an existential battle", "a historic confrontation" between those who wish to "preserve Romania's young democracy" and those who want to "return to the Russian sphere of influence". "We must not allow anger to throw us back into the past," she said to thunderous applause from her supporters, vowing to stand up for Europe and NATO. The political earthquake comes amid soaring inflation and mounting fears of Romania being potentially dragged into Russia's war in neighbouring Ukraine, as the country has emerged as a key player on the alliance's eastern flank. In Sunday's vote, another far-right contender, AUR party leader George Simion, secured nearly 14 percent. Already pounding the campaign trail for this week's parliamentary elections, Simion said Romania now has "the chance to have a sovereign government and a sovereign president". Overall, the far right won more than a third of all votes in Sunday's presidential ballot. "The far right is by far the big winner of this election," political scientist Cristian Pirvulescu told AFP, predicting a possible "contagion effect" in the parliamentary vote. Extremist forces and Lasconi's centre-right party now have "wind in their sails", sociologist Gelu Duminica said, though "it remains to be seen if they know how to capitalise" on it. The PSD, which has shaped the country's politics for more than three decades, has never before been eliminated in the first round of a presidential election. The National Liberal Party (PNL) party, with whom the PSD currently governs, also suffered a defeat. While many expressed their disbelief over the poll in the streets of the capital Bucharest, others were enthused. Maria Chis, 70, said she was surprised by Georgescu's lead in the first round but had been impressed after watching his TikTok videos. "He seems a man of integrity, serious and patriotic. He inspires seriousness. I think only someone like him can bring change," said the pensioner, who was planning to vote for him in the second round. Alex Tudose, the owner of a construction company, was gloomy. "There is sorrow, disappointment, that after so many years in Euro-Atlantic structures we voted for a pro-Russian by over 20 percent," the 42-year-old said. "There is clearly a strong fragmentation both in society and in the political class, and I think we saw that yesterday," he said. ani-anb-kym/sbkThe New York Knicks will get a chance to advance to the NBA Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Before that, though, the Knicks will look to continue progressing towards an even more important goal -- establishing the consistency necessary to contend for the NBA title. The Knicks will attempt to break a win-one-lose-one cycle Sunday night, when they host the New Orleans Pelicans in a nonconference matchup. Both teams were off Saturday after playing road NBA Cup contests Friday. The Knicks overcame a six-point fourth quarter deficit to edge the Charlotte Hornets 99-98 in East Group A action while the struggling Pelicans fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 120-109 in a West Group C game. With the win, the Knicks improved to 3-0 and set up a winner-take-all game for the East Group A's automatic bid to the quarterfinals with the Orlando Magic, who are also unbeaten through three games following Friday's 123-100 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks entered Saturday one of four Eastern Conference teams with at least 10 wins this season even though they've won back-to-back games just once outside of a four-game winning streak from Nov. 15-20. For much of Friday afternoon, the Knicks appeared headed for their second two-game losing streak of the season. New York, which suffered a 129-114 loss Wednesday night to the Dallas Mavericks despite the latter being without superstar point guard Luka Doncic (right wrist), trailed the Hornets for more than 38 minutes Friday even though Charlotte star LaMelo Ball sat out with a left calf injury. Jalen Brunson helped the Knicks avoid the upset over the final five minutes, when he scored 11 of his game-high 31 points. The victory allowed New York to finish 3-2 on a road trip that began with four games against Western Conference foes before the Black Friday noon tipoff in North Carolina. "It's a weird schedule," Brunson said. "But there's no complaints and you can't change it, so we've got to go out and find a way. We came out really soft, made some runs and then they made some shots where it looked like they were just going to get away from us. We kept fighting and found a way to get a win." The search for a win has grown increasingly frustrating for the injury-wracked Pelicans, who suffered their seventh straight loss and fell to 1-13 in their last 14 games with Friday's loss. New Orleans, which is last in the Western Conference with a 4-16 record, has played just three games this season with its optimal starting lineup of Brandon Ingram, Herbert Jones, C.J. McCollum, Daniel Theis and Zion Williamson. The quintet has combined to miss 52 games. Ingram (right calf) is day-to-day after missing the last three games while Jones (right shoulder) and Williamson (left hamstring) are out indefinitely. The Pelicans lost by 11 points or fewer for the sixth time in their last 13 defeats Friday when they missed opportunities to creep closer to the Grizzlies in the second half. New Orleans committed turnovers on consecutive trips while down 83-75 late in the third and went five straight possessions without scoring in a 101-89 game shortly before the midway point of the fourth. "We had some chances there where we cut the lead to 10, cut it to eight," Hornets coach Willie Green said. "A few miscues, a few missed shots, some 50/50 balls that we had to come up with that we didn't. Our margin for error is extremely small right now, so you've got to capitalize on those opportunities." --Field Level Media
The Election Commission's (EC) decision to hold the forthcoming local elections on a Saturday instead of a Sunday in at least 47 provinces have sparked concerns about adverse impacts on voter turnout. The country is to see several elections on Feb 1 -- a Saturday -- for chairmen and members of Provincial Administration Organisations (PAO) as those in office will complete their terms en masse next month. The EC cited technicalities regarding time limits -- organising new elections within 60 days after the expiry of PAO chairs and members' terms -- as a reason for choosing Feb 1 as the poll date. Yet, few find the agency's reason convincing. By political norms, all the elections in this country's political history have taken place on Sundays, as it's well understood that many voters live and work far away from their birthplace, where they have to return to for polling and need time to travel. If voting is to be held on a Saturday, a large number of voters will miss it as they don't have enough travelling time. Besides the fact that Saturday is a working day for many eligible voters, some of them may not be able to have a day off to vote. The People's Party said it will petition the EC tomorrow to press for a change of poll date back to Sunday to facilitate more voters. The EC has no reason to ignore the petition. In fact, it's time for the EC to realise that it cannot be complacent with its ongoing practices and performance, particularly regarding local elections, if it wants to boost voter turnout. The latest figures are unsatisfactory. Except for the Phetchaburi PAO election last Sunday, all the races in other provinces, namely Udon Thani, Surin, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, saw lower-than-expected voter turnout, with 52.17%, 52.93%, and 55.8%, respectively. Voter turnout for PAO chairman polls in Pathum Thani and other provinces was no better. Only one-third of voters made it to polling stations in Pathum Thani last September. Low turnout in Udon Thani last Sunday, in particular, is very unusual given that it was a fierce two-horse race involving titans from both rival parties. The people of Udon Thani take pride in their advanced democratisation, while several observers believe the poll results in this northeastern province have significant implications for national politics. Such disappointing figures only demonstrate a blunder in the poll law that does not enable advance voting. Unfortunately, the EC has shrugged off calls to amend the local election law to facilitate more voters. Polling regulations for local elections are unrealistic. A glaring example is that voters must travel home to cast ballots in their communities. In a national election, voters can cast ballots in advance at designated polling sites, such as designated provincial and district offices or Thai embassies for eligible voters overseas. Without advance and more convenient polling, low turnout will only secure a chance for incumbent politicians and those holding on to the clients-patron system. Under such circumstances, the country will be trapped in unhealthy, stagnant politics. If the poll agency is sincere and wishes to keep its promise of fair and transparent elections, it must be open to changes, such as fixing the law to allow advance voting. If a Saturday is necessary, then there are no excuses for the poll agency to maintain business-as-usual practice. The 2024 presidential election was close, not a landslide
Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson was one of the year's biggest sporting events, but the outcome left much to be desired. The headliner's labored efforts had many calling the fight boring at best and suspicious at worst. Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, Paul's manager and co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, pushed back against any fight-fixing claims on Wednesday. On Nov. 15, Paul vs. Tyson competed in a professional boxing bout with modified rules. Paul's inability to finish a fatigued 58-year-old Tyson had people questioning the fight's authenticity. The most prevalent instance detractors point to is when Paul opted against pursuing a knockdown after wobbling Tyson in Round 3. "People are like, 'Oh yeah, it's rigged because look at him on the pads but he didn't do this in the fight,' because someone is f---ing punching back you dumb f---s," Paul said on his brother Logan Paul's " Impaulsive " podcast on Wednesday. "People don't realize my power, and my jab and my speed and my ability, and my footwork to get out of the way of those punches, so then all of a sudden he's throwing at, literally, air." Paul added fuel to the fire of the fight-fixing allegations during his post-fight interview. Paul told reporters he "didn't want to hurt someone that didn't need to be hurt," agreeing that he "definitely" took his foot off the gas to "give the fans a show." On Wednesday, Paul claimed it was Tyson's elusiveness that saved him. "He was hard to hit," Paul said. "He was elusive. I was missing a lot of punches. I don't know how he gets off to the side like that... I wish he had put up a better fight so that I could've risen more and done more, and he was surviving." Sports broadcasters, alleged internet sleuths and fans have questioned the fight's legitimacy. Bidarian specifically addressed Super Bowl champion Michael Irvin's claims that a "no uppercut" clause was written into the Paul vs. Tyson contract. "The only thing that bothers me is the continued kind of narrative and people saying the fight was rigged," Bidarian told "The Ariel Helwani Show." "How would you have seen the contract to begin with that MIke Tyson couldn't throw an uppercut?" Bidarian asked. "It's beyond lunacy." Bidarian reassured the fight was legitimate, citing its regulated status as a professional bout and the high-stakes partnership with Netflix. Bidarian dismissed social media posts claiming the fight was fixed as deceptive efforts to generate viewership. "This was a regulated professional bout by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. And we were partners with Netflix, the biggest media company in the world, who's a public company," Bidarian said. "For anyone to suggest that this was in any way a rigged fight, they're either dumb or they're looking for attention." "I get it. Putting up posts [claiming] 'proof it was rigged' gets you good engagement. A lot of people comment, like and share. We're in an attention economy. People say outlandish things to bring awareness to themselves. It's a sad state of society that people want to spend their time like that." Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions -- a company founded by Paul and Bidarian -- partnered to host Paul vs. Tyson at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. On April 29, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations approved the fighters' request to sanction the fight professionally despite concerns about the 31-year age gap between athletes. The commission approved the sanctioning, but included a modified rulset of 14-ounce gloves (4 ounces bigger than a standard heavyweight bout) as well as the fight being eight, two-minute rounds. Tyson revealed post-fight that he "almost died" in June after an ulcer flare-up delayed the original date for the fight in July. The International Criminal Court's issuance of arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has been repudiated by Republican lawmakers in the , who have threatened to sanction the court and invoke US law to shield Israeli officials from prosecution. Within hours of the ICC's announcement, Congressman Mike Waltz, President-elect Donald Trump's choice to be the next national security advisor, the court has "no credibility" and that it can "expect a strong response" when the Trump administration comes into office in January 2025. In response to the ICC, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham the court "a rogue and politically motivated organization that is trampling on the very concept of the rule of law". "I am confident that President Trump understands that the Court’s actions against Israel sets the foundation for the ICC to come after the United States one day. We must respond forcefully to the Court for our own good," he said. Graham previously welcomed the ICC arrest warrant issued in March 2023 against Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it "a step in the right direction for the international community". The calls for sanctioning the ICC also came in quickly from Republican members of Congress. Jim Risch, the ranking member of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, used the social media account of the Foreign Relations Committee to advocate sanctions against the ICC. "The ICC’s issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu & Gallant is a complete disgrace," Risch said. "The US must move forward with sanctions against this corrupt organization." I cannot emphasize enough my strong objection to what the ICC has done to the State of Israel. The ICC is a rogue and politically motivated organization that is trampling on the very concept of the rule of law. I made it abundantly clear that I believe this entire process is an... On Thursday morning, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, six months after chief prosecutor Karim Khan requested them. This is the first time in the court's 22-year history that it has issued arrest warrants for western-allied senior officials. The Hague-based court also issued a warrant for Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, the Hamas military chief better known as Mohammed al-Deif, despite Israeli claims that he was killed in Gaza. All individuals have been accused of a range of war crimes and crimes against humanity after 7 October 2023, when a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel led to a full-fledged Israeli war on Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians while recently expanding into an Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Senator Bill Hagerty, who has been reported to be a candidate for the role of treasury secretary under the Trump administration, accused the court of antisemitism and issued a cryptic threat against the ICC. "This sham of a body masquerading as a 'court' has no jurisdiction over Israel or the US. The consequences of this shameful act will be felt soon," he . Tim Scott, a US senator who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the ICC ruling showed the court is "nothing more than an anti-Israel propaganda machine and a useful pawn for Iranian-backed terrorists". As much as Republicans were furious at the ICC's arrest warrants, Democrats largely remained quiet in the hours following the decision. At the time of publication, many Democrats had yet to publicly comment on the Thursday ruling by the international court. Rashida Tlaib, the sole Palestinian-American member of the US Congress, issued a statement welcoming the ICC ruling, describing it as "long overdue". "Today’s historic arrest warrants cannot bring back the dead and displaced, but they are a major step towards holding war criminals accountable. Netanyahu and Gallant must be arrested and brought before the ICC," Tlaib said in her statement, which was shared with Middle East Eye. "Those American officials facilitating this genocide can no longer deny that their Israeli counterparts have used starvation as a weapon of war against a captive civilian population." Other Democrats, meanwhile, joined in the chorus of Republican anger at the ICC. "No standing, relevance, or path. Fuck that," Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman on X, finishing his post with an emoji of the Israeli flag. Congressman Brad Sherman, a Democrat from California, echoed the call for imposing sanctions against the ICC. "Given this outrageous perversion of justice and abetting of Hamas's tactics by the ICC, I believe the US must act swiftly to sanction the ICC," Sherman said in a statement. "We cannot allow the politicized distortion of international law and institutions go without consequence."
