A Comprehensive Look at Mooka's eBay Automation ServicePARIS (AP) — Notre Dame Cathedral , its air thick with the smell of incense, hosted its first Mass on Sunday since the catastrophic fire of 2019, a moment that transcended religious significance to become a powerful symbol of Paris’ resilience. Beneath the glow of traditional chandeliers and modern spotlights, which illuminated its intricately carved stonework , the cathedral emerged reborn, its grandeur restored after five years of reconstruction. For Catholics, it marks the revival of the city’s spiritual heart, a place where faith has been nurtured for centuries. For the world, it signals the rebirth of one of global heritage's most famous landmarks. The event was both solemn and historic. Archbishop Laurent Ulrich presided over the morning Mass, including the consecration of a new bronze altar. The liturgy was attended by 2,500 people, including French President Emmanuel Macron — enjoying a brief respite from France's political tumult and economic troubles — clergy, dignitaries and a few lucky members of the general public who stood in long lines to enter. Nearly 170 bishops from France and around the world took part, along with one priest from each of the 113 parishes in the Paris diocese, accompanied by worshippers from these communities. Macron, in line with France’s strict division of state and church, did not take communion. Notre Dame’s journey from ruin to resurrection was defined by extraordinary craftsmanship, nearly $1 billion in global donations and a collective, unyielding determination to rebuild. After the Mass, faithful attendees, priests, nuns, and other guests lingered in the cathedral, their awe evident. Many took pictures and selfies in front of the altar, the baptistery, and vibrant rose windows, their joy mingling with reverence. Others knelt to pray at chapels dedicated to saints, savoring a spiritual intimacy many had not experienced since the fire. Later Sunday, the cathedral opened its doors to members of the public who secured reservations last week for the first fully public Mass. The Associated Press learned that tickets for this service were claimed within 25 minutes, underscoring Notre Dame’s enduring appeal. What’s more extraordinary is that this is taking place in a country with a strong emphasis on secularism and a low rate of church attendance. Public viewing areas along the Seine on Sunday morning drew hundreds of people who wished to witness the historic moment from afar, although their numbers were likely subdued by rainy and miserably cold weather conditions. Retired engineer Claude Lancrenon, watching from a viewing area, expressed both awe and disappointment. “There is so much security,” he said, gesturing toward the barriers. “Yesterday, that seemed appropriate. But today, I had hoped it would be more open so we could approach the cathedral. I still hope we’ll be able to get closer.” Tight security — akin to that of the Paris Olympic Games — reflected the importance of the occasion, ensuring the safety of dignitaries and the public alike. Nathalie Martino, a retired event organizer visiting Paris, recalled the anguish of watching the cathedral burn. “I cried so much that day,” she said. “And now, here I am. I had to come. It was something I needed to do.” Sunday’s Masses follow Saturday evening’s ceremonies in which Ulrich symbolically reopened the cathedral’s massive wooden doors by striking them three times with a crosier crafted from charred beams salvaged from the fire. As the doors swung open, choirs filled the air with song and the cathedral’s great organ — silent since the fire — resounded with majestic melodies. Inside, the restoration reveals a cathedral transformed with now-gleaming limestone walls cleaned of centuries of grime. The restored stained-glass windows project dazzling patterns of color across the nave. “No one alive has seen the cathedral like this,” said the Rev. Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Notre Dame’s rector. "It is more than restored — it is reborn.” The consecration of the new altar was a pivotal moment in Notre Dame’s return to full liturgical life. The altar houses relics of five saints tied to Paris, including St. Catherine Labouré and St. Charles de Foucauld, continuing a centuries-old tradition of embedding sacred artifacts at the heart of worship spaces. The consecration, involving holy water, chrism oil, incense and prayer, transforms the altar into a sacred centerpiece of the cathedral. That was the most moving moment of the day for Marie Capucine, 37, a consecrated virgin representing her Parisian parish of Saint Germain des Prés at the reopening. She recalled the day the fire raged, and the ‘’communion in prayer all over the world'' for the cathedral to be saved. “That shows that the Church gathers, no matter whether people are believers or not, it says something to the world, something beautiful,” she concluded. The reopening of Notre Dame is also a moment of cultural and national unity. Macron, who vowed to restore the cathedral within five years after the fire, called the project “a jolt of hope” for France, a nation often divided by political crises. The Sunday Masses underscore Notre Dame’s dual role as a place of worship and a symbol of communal resilience. They also ensure that members of the broader Catholic community can partake in the cathedral’s spiritual revival. The path to restoration was fraught with challenges. Lead contamination forced work to pause, and the COVID-19 pandemic added delays. Yet the project, overseen by architect Philippe Villeneuve, has been hailed as a triumph of human ingenuity and collective resolve. Cutting-edge fire prevention systems, including thermal cameras and a misting system, have been installed to safeguard the cathedral’s future. Villeneuve described the effort as “restoring not just a building but the soul of a nation,” emphasizing the personal and national significance of the work. With its spire once again piercing the Parisian sky, Notre Dame is poised to reclaim its role as a global beacon of faith and art. The cathedral, which previously welcomed 12 million annual visitors, is expected to draw 15 million in its new chapter. This monumental revival is not confined to a single day. Ulrich has announced an “octave” of celebrations — eight days of special religious services, each with its own theme, running through Dec. 15. These daily liturgies, open to diverse groups from local parishioners to international pilgrims, emphasize Notre Dame’s role as a unifying spiritual hub. On Monday, the Los Angeles Rams claimed former Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. off the waiver wire. This came just a day after the former first-round pick of the 2023 NFL Draft was waived after playing just two defensive snaps in five weeks. Los Angeles may be just the place to rejuvenate the young defensive back’s career after a less-than-stellar start at the professional level. Former First Rounder Emmanuel Forbes Joins Rams Forbes’ addition to the Rams secondary adds more youth and talent to the mix. However, the former Mississippi State Bulldogs’ biggest red flag is still his status as an undersized player at the cornerback position. Forbes stands at six feet, average for the modern NFL corner. However, his 180-pound frame is around 10-15 pounds lighter than the ideal weight for the position. His physical advantage comes from his speed and long arms, which allow him to deflect passes in coverage. The Rams’ newest edition bolsters a secondary that ranks around the league average. The team ranks 17th in passing yards allowed, 11th worst in passing touchdowns allowed, and 10th in interceptions. With the team in a playoff push, Forbes’ raw talent can aid the Rams in press coverage and off-man schemes. By coming to LA, Forbes also rejoins former teammate safety Kamren Curl . Curl and Forbes both played together in Washington from 2023-2024. Head Coach Sean McVay’s team was able to revive the seemingly dead career of another first-round pick. When quarterback Baker Mayfield was without a team after being dropped by the Carolina Panthers, the Rams claimed the former Sooner off waivers. Mayfield’s five-game stint in Tinsel Town included a game-winning drive against the Las Vegas Raiders two days after signing, as well as a 51-14 win over the Denver Broncos. Mayfield’s run with the Rams revitalized his career, leading to him signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. If the Rams can work their magic on Forbes, they can turn another doomed career around. This article first appeared on Last Word On Sports and was syndicated with permission.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma will be obtaining mobile counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems detection technology following mystery sightings in other states. Gov. Kevin Stitt on Monday announced he had directed Tim Tipton, public safety commissioner and homeland security adviser, to procure the systems to support state and local law enforcement in responding to recent unmanned drone activity. “Drones and unmanned aerial systems are an exciting new industry here in Oklahoma,” Stitt said. “We want to make sure that industry has room to thrive.” Because the technology is new, the state doesn’t have all the measures in place to ensure protection from those who wish to cause harm, Stitt said. “The activity happening in New Jersey and across the country is unsettling,” Tipton said in a statement. “While we’ve only had a few reports of drone activity in Oklahoma, we want to be ready in case the need arises.” Residents in New Jersey and other parts of the eastern United States have reported seeing unexplained drones in the sky recently, sparking concerns over who is operating them. The AP has reported that law enforcement doesn’t believe the drones are a public safety threat, though the FBI has asked residents to share any information, videos or photos they might have. Tipton was not available Monday to answer questions about the announcement, including how much the systems will cost to procure and where the funding will come. Federal law generally prohibits disabling or destroying any unmanned aerial systems because federal rules consider drones to be a form of aircraft. This prevents state and local law enforcement from any activity that would interfere with the flight of a drone, including shooting it down. With the detection systems, DPS can monitor and identify the drones without destroying them and ensure the state’s critical infrastructure is protected, officials said.CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Garry Clark scored 15 points as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beat Prairie View A&M 109-74 on Saturday night. Ohio State, Michigan players involved in postgame scuffleOn December 16, 2024, the US Supreme Court denied a petition filed by a number of states dominated by conservative extremists that asked the court to review constitutional challenges to California’s authority to enforce its own emissions limits for new cars and light trucks. The Court’s order denying a petition submitted by Ohio and other states came after the court declined on December 13 to consider the merits of oil and gas interests’ separate challenges to the lawfulness of EPA’s decision granting California a waiver of Clean Air Act preemption for its clean vehicle standards. The only issue the Court said it will consider related to the challenges by the fossil fuel companies is a very narrow preliminary question about whether they have standing to bring their claims. The court granted review on that issue in its order last Friday. “California’s clean car standards have successfully helped reduce the dangerous soot, smog, and climate pollution that put all people at risk, while also turbocharging clean technologies and job creation,” said Alice Henderson, director and lead counsel for Transportation and Clean Air Policy at the Environmental Defense Fund . “EPA’s decision to grant California this preemption waiver is based on a rock-solid legal foundation and decades of precedent, and it ensures vital clean air protections for millions of people. EDF is committed to continuing to help defend California’s Clean Air Act authority and these life-saving clean car standards,” said Henderson. California’s emissions standards have played a central role in many advancements in vehicle emission technology, from catalytic converters to zero emission vehicles. Congress has long recognized California’s leadership in addressing the harmful pollution from new vehicles and adopted Clean Air Act provisions specifically excluding California’s standards from preemption. The Clean Air Act was passed at the behest of that rabid, foaming at the mouth liberal, Richard Nixon. According to Heather Cox Richardson , in February 1970, Nixon sent “a special message “to Congress on “environmental quality.” It said, “[W]e...have too long abused our natural environment. The time has come when we can wait no longer to repair the damage already done, and to establish new criteria to guide us in the future.” He called for “fundamentally new philosophies of land, air and water use, for stricter regulation, for expanded government action, for greater citizen involvement, and for new programs to ensure that government, industry and individuals all are called on to do their share of the job and to pay their share of the cost.” His message would not get a single vote from the Republicans in Congress today. Since 1967, federal law has contained a preemption waiver for California’s emission standards for new motor vehicles, so long as those standards are at least as protective as national standards. In that time EPA has granted California more than 75 waivers. The California Clean Cars program at issue in this case has been delivering life-saving pollution reductions to communities since 2017 and has been adopted by 17 other states across the country, the EDF says. In 2023, the oil and gas industry, as well as the attorneys general of Ohio and other states, challenged this waiver. The state challengers were not seeking their own right to set standards; they just wanted to disrupt California’s longstanding clean cars program, the EDF says. In April 2024, a panel of judges on the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled against the challengers and upheld the EPA’s decision to grant the waiver to California, unanimously rejecting the challengers’ constitutional argument. EDF was part of a coalition of environmental and health groups that helped defend the waiver as parties in that case. California, joined by 17 other states and the District of Columbia, and a group of major auto manufacturers including Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, BMW, and Volvo, also intervened to defend the EPA’s decision. The challengers then filed petitions with the Supreme Court asking it to review the D.C. Circuit’s decision. On December 16, the Court denied Ohio’s constitutional challenges to California’s authority, though Justice Thomas did indicate he would have granted review. Before liberals break out the brie and Sauvignon blanc to celebrate, a little self reflection is in order. CNN cautions that what remains of the legal dispute could be upended anyway after you know who resumes the occupancy of the Offal Office next month. In 2019, the first Trump administration rolled back California’s longstanding waiver that allowed it to set its own air pollution standards. The Biden administration reinstated the waiver in 2022 . California has moved faster than the EPA toward an all-electric vehicle future. The state’s air regulators voted in 2022 to set stringent rules banning the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035 and put interim targets in place to phase the cars out. Since then, 11 other states and the District of Columbia have agreed to follow California’s lead on exhaust emissions, which effectively gives California control over about 40% of the new car market in the US. In contrast to California, the Biden EPA has put in more forgiving vehicle emissions standards which allow plug-in hybrids to play a significant role in the transition to electric cars and trucks. The EPA engaged in extensive negotiations with automakers and other stakeholders before softening its proposed regulations. The thinking was that by allowing more flexibility in the early stages of the new regulations, the EV revolution would more forward on its own. In the end, the EPA calculated that the percentage of EV sales in 2035 would be approximately the same under the less strict framework as they would be indeed the more stringent rules. But compromise is not something MAGAlomaniacs can tolerate. They have to have everything 100% their own way or else they will stomp their feet and hold their breath until they turn blue like a reactive two-year-old. The battle will be rejoined as soon as the new administration takes office. The Tangerine Tyrant told the fossil fuel companies what he needed to grant all their wished — one billion dollars in cash. They delivered for him, so now he intends to deliver for them. If you think that sounds like bribery, you aren’t wrong. It is corruption writ large and smacks of the kind of shakedown the Mafia specializes in. Yet it is the new paradigm in America. Pay Tramp the money he demands and all your prayers will be answered. Things don’t get much greater than that. It is comforting to know we have elected someone who will subvert any and all pollution rules so his friends with money can get even richer while Americans experience more health-related issues than most developed countries. If that doesn’t make you proud, we don’t know what will. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday nominated Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the US ambassador to France, in the latest of several controversial picks. Kushner "is a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our Country & its interests," Trump said on his Truth Social website, adding that Jared "worked closely with me in the White House." The choice is in keeping with Trump's pattern, so far, of selecting people, often wealthy, who are close to his family or of proven loyalty. Kushner is a multimillionaire real estate executive and former attorney; his son was a senior adviser during Trump's first term. Trump did not mention, however, that the elder Kushner once served jail time -- a two-year sentence, most of it served in a federal prison. Kushner, who is now 70, pleaded guilty in 2004 to 18 counts of tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign contributions. The case, which was prosecuted by then US attorney Chris Christie, included sordid details, to which Kushner admitted: that he had hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, a man cooperating in a campaign finance inquiry, and then videotaped the encounter and sent it to the man's wife, Kushner's sister, to dissuade her from testifying against him. Christie, who worked on Trump's first presidential transition team and then opposed him in this year's Republican primary contests, later said Kushner had committed a "loathsome" and "disgusting crime." In 2020, Trump issued a pardon to Kushner, whose conviction had resulted in him being disbarred in three states. Nominees for key ambassadorships are often business associates of a president-elect, or major political donors. But it is rare, if not unprecedented, to name a convicted felon. The first two men to fill the prestigious Paris post were famed inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin and a future president, Thomas Jefferson. If confirmed, Kushner would succeed Denise Bauer, a former ambassador to Belgium who was a major Democratic fundraiser and donor. md/bbk/md
NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks pulled Wall Street to another record amid mixed trading. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% Monday after closing November at an all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. Super Micro Computer, a stock that’s been on an AI-driven roller coaster, soared after saying an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or the company’s board. Retailers were mixed coming off Black Friday and heading into what’s expected to be the best Cyber Monday on record. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — Technology stocks are pulling Wall Street toward another record amid mixed trading on Monday. The S&P 500 rose 0.2% in afternoon trading after closing its best month of the year at an all-time high . The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 86 points, or 0.2%, with a little more than an hour remaining in trading, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.9% higher. Super Micro Computer, a stock that’s been on an AI-driven roller coaster, soared 31.1% to lead the market. Following accusations of misconduct and the resignation of its public auditor , the maker of servers used in artificial-intelligence technology said an investigation found no evidence of misconduct by its management or by the company's board. It also said it doesn’t expect to restate its past financials and that it will find a new chief financial officer, appoint a general counsel and make other moves to strengthen its governance. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up the market. Gains of 1.8% for Microsoft and 2.9% for Meta Platforms were the two strongest forces pushing upward on the S&P 500. Intel was another propellant during the morning, but it lost an early gain to fall 1.1% after the chip company said CEO Pat Gelsinger has retired and stepped down from the board. Intel is looking for Gelsinger’s replacement, and its chair said it’s “committed to restoring investor confidence.” Intel recently lost its spot in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to Nvidia, which has skyrocketed in Wall Street's frenzy around AI. Stellantis, meanwhile, skidded following the announcement of its CEO’s departure . Carlos Tavares steps down after nearly four years in the top spot of the automaker, which owns car brands like Jeep, Citroën and Ram, amid an ongoing struggle with slumping sales and an inventory backlog at dealerships. The world’s fourth-largest automaker’s stock fell 6.3% in Milan. The majority of stocks in the S&P 500 likewise fell, including California utility PG&E. It dropped 3.7% after saying it would sell $2.4 billion of stock and preferred shares to raise cash. Retailers were mixed amid what’s expected to be the best Cyber Monday on record and coming off Black Friday . Target, which recently gave a forecast for the holiday season that left investors discouraged , fell 1.6%. Walmart , which gave a more optimistic forecast, rose 0.3%. Amazon, which looks to benefit from online sales from Cyber Monday, climbed 1.3%. The stock market largely took Donald Trump’s latest threat on tariffs in stride. The president-elect on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a group of developing economies if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar. Trump said he wants the group, headlined by Brazil, Russia, India and China, to promise it won’t create a new currency or otherwise try to undercut the U.S. dollar. The dollar has long been the currency of choice for global trade. Speculation has also been around a long time that other currencies could knock it off its mantle, but no contender has come close. The U.S. dollar’s value rose Monday against several other currencies, but one of its strongest moves likely had less to do with the tariff threats. The euro fell amid a political battle in Paris over the French government’s budget . The euro sank 0.7% against the U.S. dollar and broke below $1.05. In the bond market, Treasury yields gave up early gains to hold relatively steady. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed above 4.23% during the morning before falling back to 4.19%. That was just above its level of 4.18% late Friday. A report in the morning showed the U.S. manufacturing sector contracted again last month, but not by as much as economists expected. This upcoming week will bring several big updates on the job market, including the October job openings report, weekly unemployment benefits data and the all-important November jobs report. They could steer the next moves for Federal Reserve, which recently began pulling interest rates lower to give support to the economy. Economists expect Friday's headliner report to show U.S. employers accelerated their hiring in November, coming off October's lackluster growth that was hampered by damaging hurricanes and strikes. “We now find ourselves in the middle of this Goldilocks zone, where economic health supports earnings growth while remaining weak enough to justify potential Fed rate cuts,” according to Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide. In financial markets abroad, Chinese stocks led gains worldwide as monthly surveys showed improving conditions for manufacturing, partly driven by a surge in orders ahead of Trump’s inauguration next month. Both official and private sector surveys of factory managers showed strong new orders and export orders, possibly partly linked to efforts by importers in the U.S. to beat potential tariff hikes by Trump once he takes office. Indexes rose 0.7% in Hong Kong and 1.1% in Shanghai. AP Business Writers Matt Ott and Elaine Kurtenbach contributed.
Cash Kings: 3 Dividend Stocks That Pay Monthly Cash
LONDON (AP) — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor “brutally raped and battered” her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger. The fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime, shook his head as the jury of eight women and four men found him liable for assault after deliberating about six hours in the High Court in Dublin. He was mobbed by cameras as he left court but did not comment. He later said on the social platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the “modest award.” Hand's voice cracked and her hands trembled as she read a statement outside the courthouse, saying she would never forget what happened to her but would now be able to move on with her life. She thanked her family, partner, friends, jurors, the judge and all the supporters that had reached out to her online, but particularly her daughter. “She has given me so much strength and courage over the last six years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice,” she said. “I want to show (her) and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. Under Irish law, she did not have the anonymity she would have been granted in a criminal proceeding and was named publicly throughout the trial. Her lawyer told jurors that McGregor was angry about a fight he had lost in Las Vegas two months earlier and took it out on his client. “He’s not a man, he’s a coward,” attorney John Gordon said in his closing speech. “A devious coward and you should treat him for what he is.” Gordon said his client never pretended to be a saint and was only looking to have fun when she sent McGregor a message through Instagram after attending a Christmas party. He said Hand knew McGregor socially and that they had grown up in the same area. She said he picked her and a friend up in a car and shared cocaine with them, which McGregor admitted in court, on the way to the Beacon Hotel. Hand said she told McGregor she didn't want to have sex with him and that she was menstruating. She said she told him “no” as he started kissing her but he eventually pinned her to a bed and she couldn't move. McGregor put her in a chokehold and later told her, “now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times,” referring to a UFC match when he had to admit defeat, she said. Hand had to take several breaks in emotional testimony over three days. She said McGregor threatened to kill her during the encounter and she feared she would never see her young daughter again. Eventually, he let go of her. “I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn’t tell anyone so he wouldn’t hurt me again,” she testified. She said she then let him do what he wanted and he had sex with her. A paramedic who examined Hand the next day testified that she had never before seen someone with that intensity of bruising. A doctor told jurors Hand had multiple injuries. Hand said the trauma of the attack had left her unable to work as a hairdresser, she fell behind on her mortgage and had to move out of her house. Police investigated the woman’s complaint but prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. McGregor, in his post on X, said he was disappointed jurors didn't see all the evidence prosecutors had reviewed. He testified that the two had athletic and vigorous sex, but that it was not rough. He said “she never said ‘no’ or stopped” and testified that everything she said was a lie. “It is a full blown lie among many lies,” he said when asked about the chokehold allegation. “How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings.” McGregor’s lawyer told jurors they had to set aside their animus toward the fighter. “You may have an active dislike of him, some of you may even loathe him – there is no point pretending that the situation might be otherwise,” attorney Remy Farrell said. “I’m not asking you to invite him to Sunday brunch.” The defense said the woman never told investigators McGregor threatened her life. They also showed surveillance video in court that they said appeared to show the woman kiss McGregor’s arm and hug him after they left the hotel room. Farrell said she looked “happy, happy, happy.” McGregor said he was “beyond petrified” when first questioned by police and read them a prepared statement. On the advice of his lawyer, he refused to answer more than 100 follow-up questions. The jury ruled against Hand in a case she brought against one of McGregor’s friends, James Lawrence, whom she accused of having sex with her in the hotel without consent.

Welcome to the online version of From the Politics Desk , an evening newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the White House, Capitol Hill and the campaign trail. In today’s edition, senior national politics reporter Sahil Kapur explores why it won't be easy for the Democrats to claw back control of the Senate anytime soon. Plus, politics reporters Allan Smith and Vaughn Hillyard examine how Donald Trump's transition team is turning to the much-maligned Project 2025 to fill jobs in the administration. Sign up to receive this newsletter in your inbox every weekday here. Senate GOP campaign chief: Our majority could last all decade By Sahil Kapur Outgoing National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines is throwing down the gauntlet, predicting that the GOP’s newly won 53-seat majority in the 2024 election could give the party control of the chamber for several cycles to come. “We’re grateful that we have those additional seats beyond the 51 majority. I think it bodes well for us to keep the majority through the rest of the decade,” Daines, of Montana, told NBC News. Republicans picked off four Democratic-held seats in the red states of West Virginia, Montana and Ohio, and the purple state of Pennsylvania. The GOP held serve in red-leaning Florida and Texas, where Democrats were hoping for a miracle. For their part, Democrats held their ground in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin, despite Donald Trump carrying all of those states. But what about Daines’ prediction? It’s bold, yet plausible. Democrats just had a nightmare of a map, so the landscape will only get better from here. But not that much better in 2026 or 2028 , barring a dramatic political realignment. The 2026 map follows the 2020 cycle, in which Democrats won 50 seats and flipped the Senate with the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris. The party’s best hope of a pickup in two years is in Maine, where the long-serving centrist Republican Sen. Susan Collins has proven to be a challenging target. Another is North Carolina, a battleground state where Democrats haven’t won a Senate seat since 2008 and fell short of unseating GOP Sen. Thom Tillis four years ago. From there it gets tougher: Alaska, Iowa, Kentucky, Texas. All states Trump won comfortably in all three of his elections. In 2026, Democrats will also have to defend seats in the swing states of Michigan (Sen. Gary Peters) and Georgia (Sen. Jon Ossoff). Both will be top Republican targets. Then looking further down the road to 2028, Democrats’ best pickup opportunities are in North Carolina (Sen. Ted Budd) and Wisconsin (Sen. Ron Johnson). But they’ll have to defend seats in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Bottom line: Unless Democrats find a way to expand their appeal among white voters without a college degree, their prospects of proving Daines wrong look daunting. Those voters carry disproportionate influence in the two-seats-per-state Senate, given the large number of rural states with small populations. The silver lining for Democrats is that their new coalition — which relies heavily on high-propensity college-educated voters and enduring support from Black voters — is well suited to turnout patterns in off-year or midterm elections, like 2026. And down-ballot Republicans have struggled to replicate Trump’s coalition for their own races, especially without him running alongside them. Trump’s transition team turns to Project 2025 after disavowing it during the campaign By Allan Smith and Vaughn Hillyard Donald Trump and his allies disavowed the conservative Project 2025 during the election, seeing the conservative transition plan and policy blueprint as a liability after Democrats used it to attack his campaign. Some close to Trump even suggested that those tied to the effort would be shut out of a potential administration. “They made themselves nuclear,” Howard Lutnick, the co-chair of Trump’s transition and his nominee to serve as commerce secretary, told CNBC in September. But with the campaign over, Trump’s transition team is turning to Project 2025 to help staff the next administration. Already, transition officials are taking suggestions for potential hires from the extensive personnel database created by Project 2025, a person familiar with the situation told NBC News. While Project 2025’s massive book of conservative policy recommendations received most of the attention from Democrats, a central part of the effort was putting together a database that officials had framed as a conservative LinkedIn to help staff an incoming Republican administration. Individuals helping to fill out the personnel teams for the Trump transition operation have sought and used information from the Project 2025 database because of the enormity of the task of filling out the more than 4,000 political appointee jobs that will become vacant in 2025, this person said. The receptiveness to using the Project 2025 database for potential hires comes as the transition has already shown it is open to tapping contributors to the effort for administration jobs, including Tom Homan as border czar, Brendan Carr as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and John Ratcliffe as CIA director. Both Homan and Ratcliffe were listed as contributors to Project 2025, while Carr wrote a chapter on the FCC. Read more → That’s all from the Politics Desk for now.
