Stalking victims are about to be granted the right to know the identity of their online abusers. The new "rigt to know" guidance aims to tell victims the identity of their abuser at the earliest opportunity. It comes as a new map reveals the places in Wales with the most cases of stalking. Across Wales, Denbigshire is the hotspot with the most stalking crime reports, with 10.8 per 100,000 people. This is closely followed by Blaenau Gwent , with 10.7 per 100,000 population. Minister for safeguarding, Jess Phillips told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: “Currently, victims might not be told who their stalker is, leaving them potentially walking past them on the street without knowing." Since stalking became a specific offence in 2012, crime reports have increased every year, up to a record 132,000 in the year ending June 2024. That was 40 times higher than when the offence first appeared in crime data in 2015, 10 times higher than in 2018 and a 12% increase in the last year. Investigators are searching for a man who reportedly tied a woman to a tree by gunpoint in Pebble Beach before fleeing Wednesday morning, Dec. 4. Monterey County Sheriff’s Commander Andy Rosas says the woman was walking on a forested trail about a mile-and-a-half from the corporation yard on Sunridge Road when she spotted a man walking behind her at about 7:30am. She later told investigators the man looked “suspicious,” and that as she was walking, she conveyed that to another woman who was also on the trail. The victim decided to step aside to let the man walk past her, Rosas says, yet as he approached, he pulled out a gun and forced her to walk to a tree, proceeding to tie her up and then fleeing the scene. About two hours later, a man walking on the trail heard the victim calling for help, and aided by another woman, the two were able to untie her. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult in his 30s, wearing a green hat and gray sweater. He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck spelling out an unknown word that begins with “Z.” More from this section Rosas says investigators are also interested in hearing from the woman who was reportedly warned by the victim as they passed on the trail. The woman is described as in her 40s, wearing a black sweater and walking a large black dog. EDMONTON — Prairie premiers are urging Canada to act on American concerns over illegal cross-border traffic of people and drugs to stave off the looming threat of 25-per-cent tariffs. Alberta's Danielle Smith, Saskatchewan's Scott Moe, and Manitoba's Wab Kinew said Tuesday that Canada must better address the concerns of its largest trading partner. Incoming U.S. president Donald Trump promised Monday to impose the tariffs on his first day in office in January. He said he would keep the tariffs in place until Canada and Mexico stop illegal border crossings and prevent drugs such as fentanyl from entering the U.S. Smith told the legislature Tuesday the tariffs would be “devastating” across the board. She said she will highlight the "pressure points" that need to be addressed during a planned meeting Wednesday between premiers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "I believe the new (Trump) administration has been very clear about what it is they want. They want us to meet our two-per-cent NATO commitment, and they want to stop the leaky border," she said, pointing to the illegal fentanyl trade. In a video posted to social media, Smith said Canada needs to reach its pledged commitment to spend at least two per cent of its gross domestic product on defence by 2032. "If their trade partners are looking to be free riders on American security interests, that's also going to harm the relationship," Smith said, adding, "you also have to take seriously the asylum seekers." The U.S. is Alberta’s largest trading partner, with $188 billion in bilateral trade in 2023. Last year, energy products accounted for more than 80 per cent of that trade, or about $134 billion.
