We’ve all seen the PC builds that go all out, relying on the most expensive components to guarantee the best performance possible. But it doesn't require best-in-slot PC parts to have a little fun with most games, and usually there’s a point of diminishing returns as you invest in ever more powerful and expensive hardware. If you’re trying to build or upgrade a rig within a moderate budget, there's plenty of hardware that strikes a great balance between performance and value in the Intel Core CPU and Intel Arc GPU lines. Intel has been known for strong gaming CPUs for years. From the 12th Gen onward, many of the Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs are more than up to the task. 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Intel Core CPUs have some big perks for gamers, with potent Performance Cores that can wrangle most games you throw at them. And they back those up with Efficient Cores that help handle your system’s background tasks, thereby freeing up the P-Cores to focus on ensuring consistent gaming performance. With older games, a single fast core can be all it takes to get good performance, and most of Intel’s recent Core processors will give you a handful, so even newer games that leverage more cores have plenty of system resources. Even going back to the Intel Core i5-12600K, you’d be looking at a 10-core CPU with ample speed to handle most games, and recent pricing makes it easy to pick up for well below $200. This chip would give you six of those Performance cores and four Efficient Cores. This is a consistent story for Intel CPUs, which can often be found with compelling deals. There are plenty that even help you kickstart your build or upgrade by combining a CPU and motherboard into a bundle that helps you get both at a discount. It’s not just Intel CPUs delivering value for budget-minded PC upgrades and builds. The Intel Arc A-series and newly launched B-series GPUs can also give you a chunk of performance for a fraction of the price of the competition. Intel’s recent integrated graphics have proven quite impressive and can often handle lighter games and lower resolutions, but if you need some extra graphical muscle to render more complex 3D games or push to higher resolutions like 1440p, Intel Arc graphics cards can support you while playing into your budget. Acer, ASRock, and Sparkle all make some good-looking and capable graphics cards built around the Intel Arc A770, A750 and the new B580 GPUs. These are almost all available for under $300, sitting them solidly in the budget price range for new graphics cards. Impressively, they come with a decent chunk of VRAM, which helps with running games at higher resolution and with higher quality settings. Even for demanding titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at 1440p Ultra, the A770 can offer smooth gameplay. It even supports low level ray tracing for more realistic lighting and reflections. And now, Intel has a new generation of GPU available with the first Intel Arc B-series graphics cards. These continue to provide value for gamers who want more performance, with improved ray tracing and features such as XeSS 2 upscaling, frame generation and latency reduction. If you want to see what kind of system you can build out with Intel Arc and Intel Core components, you can find all sorts of deals, bundles, and complete builds available at Newegg here .

TORONTO — Canada's main stock index ended Tuesday narrowly in the red, weighed down by losses in energy and base metals stocks, while U.S. markets moved higher. Investors digested the latest news from U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, who threatened sweeping new tariffs of 25 per cent on products from Canada and Mexico. The “sizable” tariff promise likely shocked markets somewhat right off the bat, said Mike Archibald, vice-president and portfolio manager with AGF Investments Inc. “But I think as people have kind of digested they've thought that this is probably a starting position from a bargaining standpoint,” he said. The announcement was in line with Trump’s tactics used during his first presidency, said Archibald. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 5.21 points at 25,405.14. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 123.74 points at 44,860.31. The S&P 500 index was up 34.26 points at 6,021.63, while the Nasdaq composite was up 119.46 points at 19,174.30. A few Canadian companies saw their share prices drop because of the outsized impact such a tariff could have on certain sectors, said Archibald. These included Bombardier, BRP, Linamar and Magna International. “You can see the biggest losers on the market today are generally those that manufacture in either Canada and/or Mexico,” he said. But higher tariffs could also be inflationary for the U.S., said Archibald. Markets have been paring back their bets for interest rate cuts in the U.S. in the wake of the election in anticipation of potentially higher inflation. “It’s a bit too early to know,” said Archibald. Despite the uncertainty, he said markets are still poised to do well in the coming months thanks to Trump’s overall pro-business bent. “I still think the market is in a very good position to rally ... into the end of the year,” he said. “The S&P 500 is still going to do fairly well relative to other markets around the world.” The loonie fell to a four-year low before clawing back some of its losses later in the day, he noted. The Canadian dollar traded for 71.01 cents US compared with 71.53 cents US on Monday. The January crude oil contract was down 17 cents at US$68.77 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was up three cents at US$3.47 per mmBTU. The December gold contract was up US$2.80 at US$2,621.30 an ounce and the March copper contract was down four cents at US$4.12 a pound. — With files from The Associated Press This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024. Cl A stock underperforms Tuesday when compared to competitorsIndiana got what it wanted Tuesday night in a 97-71 rout of Sam Houston State -- a lopsided victory where its bench played well and it didn't have to go down to the wire. The Hoosiers will look for more of the same Friday night in Bloomington when they continue their homestand against nonconference foe Miami (Ohio). Four players scored in double figures for Indiana (6-2) against the Bearkats, including 18 from reserve Luke Goode. The Illinois transfer hit four 3-pointers in less than four minutes of the first half, enabling the Hoosiers to take a 34-12 lead. Led by Goode, Indiana's bench contributed a whopping 36 points. "I thought it was a total team effort on everybody's part," Hoosiers coach Mike Woodson said. "Helps when your bench come off and play the way they did. Goode was fantastic but everybody off the bench played well." Indiana also got an encouraging 19-point performance from point guard Myles Rice, who struggled a bit in the first seven games in terms of making shots and running the offense. Rice (11.1 ppg) is one of four double-figure scorers in an attack led by Mackenzie Mgbako (16.8). Meanwhile, the RedHawks (5-2) are coming off a 73-60 home win Monday against Air Force. Bellarmine transfer Peter Suder poured in a career-high 42 points on 17-of-21 shooting, the highest-scoring game in program history since Wally Szczerbiak scored 43 in 1999. "I always say players win games, man. Coaches lose games," Miami coach Travis Steele told the Journal-News. "Peter was phenomenal. It was just get out of the way and just let him go." Forward Kam Craft, who Steele landed out of high school when he was still coaching at Xavier, is the RedHawks' second-leading scorer at 14.1 ppg.
