DETROIT – The reliability of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids has dramatically improved, narrowing a wide gap with gas-powered automobiles, according to the latest survey by Consumer Reports. But vehicles with internal combustion engines and gas-electric hybrids are still far more dependable, the survey found. Recommended Videos Consumer Reports subscribers, who filled out surveys during much of 2024, reported that electric vehicles had 42% more problems than gas autos on average. But that was down from 79% more in the 2023 survey. The survey released Thursday measured reliability of vehicles mainly from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years. Plug-ins, which travel a short distance on battery power before a hybrid powertrain kicks in, had 70% more problems than gas vehicles, but that was less than half the difference found in last year's survey. The reason for the improvement? EV and plug-in technology are maturing, said Jake Fisher, head of Consumer Reports' automobile test center. “As the automakers get more experience with the new technologies and new platforms, they will improve,” Fisher said. He said he expects plug-in and electric vehicles to keep getting better, further closing the gap with gas vehicles. But one thing may stand in the way: Automakers often test new automation and other features on EVs, and the new stuff is prone to glitches. “Until we get to where an EV is just a car that does practical things with their own powertrain, I'm not sure they'll ever catch up totally” to gas vehicles, Fisher said. The new technology may offer more than the next wave of EV buyers would like, as EVs move from early adopters to more practical mainstream buyers, Fisher said. “There are people who just want a car that’s easy to maintain,” he said. “I don’t use gas. I don’t need this automation feature and electric door handles or whatever the heck they are putting out.” Consumer Reports has noted that concerns about EV and plug-in quality add to issues that may have buyers hesitating before switching from gasoline engines, including concerns about higher up-front costs, too few charging stations and long charging times. Gas-electric hybrids, which switch from internal combustion to electric power to get better mileage, were about as reliable as cars with combustion engines. While the technology is pretty technical, it has been refined for a quarter century, mainly by pioneer Toyota, Fisher said. “CR's tests have shown that they are often quieter, quicker and more pleasant to drive than their gasoline-only counterparts,” he said. Through September of this year, the last month for which all automakers have reported results, electric vehicle sales are up 7.2%, plug-in sales rose 11.6%, but hybrids led with a 32.6% increase, according to Motorintelligence.com. Consumer Reports said its 2024 survey of subscribers representing about 300,000 vehicle owners found that Subaru was the most reliable brand for the first time, followed by perennial top finishers Lexus and Toyota. Rounding out the top five were Honda and its Acura luxury brand. It was the first time since 2020 that neither Toyota nor its Lexus luxury brand were in the top spot, Fisher said. The highest-ranked brand from a U.S.-based automaker was General Motors' Buick at No. 11. The five lowest of 22 brands that were ranked were electric upstart Rivian, followed by GM's Cadillac luxury brand, GMC, Jeep and Volkswagen, Consumer Reports said. The magazine and website didn't get enough data this year to rank Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Lucid, Maserati, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Ram. Electric vehicle sales leader Tesla finished 17th, down three spots from last year's survey. Subaru took first place in the survey by following the same formula that Toyota uses to get high reliability scores: It doesn't make huge changes when updating or unveiling new vehicles, Fisher said. Instead of going with new engines or transmissions, Subaru carries parts over from the prior generation. “They don't fix what's not broken,” he said. “They continue to refine their products, and because the products perform quite well, they don't have to have big changes.” Rivian, Fisher said, is a new company with new electric models that have more glitches. Since the company is a startup, it can't use proven powertrains from prior generations yet. “It's expected that you're going to have issues when you have nothing to carry over” from previous model years, he said. The survey found that the gas-powered Toyota RAV4 small SUV was the most reliable vehicle, followed by the Toyota Corolla compact car. The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was third, followed by the RAV4 gas-electric hybrid, Fisher said. Consumer Reports' survey of its subscriber base does not represent all vehicle purchasers in the U.S. or the population that bought specific vehicle types. The survey was to be released at a meeting of the Automotive Press Association of Detroit.Trump taps forceful ally of hard-line immigration policies to head Customs and Border ProtectionSurveillance video shows the suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a bicycle near West 85th Street in Manhattan after the killing. (Credit: Orwell Management) The speculation regarding the shooting of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson continues to run rampant. While this can be interesting, the truth is that the on-the-ground investigation will be far more prosaic than glamorous. For today’s detectives, serious crime investigation marries grinding "shoe leather" work to data-driven digital forensics. It can be a daunting amount of information. As such, let’s look at some hard data points that are likely jumping-off points for investigators who have to play the percentages (and some that are not): 1. ‘Hitmen for hire,’ in the commonly perceived sense, don’t really exist The idea that someone off the street can walk into a social club or call-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy who kills for a living is essentially a myth – I cannot recall one in my experience. That said, murders-for-hire do exist (i.e, an associate who is not a "professional" is willing to hire on). UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO ASSASSIN LEFT MESSAGE BEHIND TO 'MAKE A STATEMENT' OR 'THROW OFF POLICE': DETECTIVES But the speculation as to whether the shooter was a "professional" or not is beside the point – the police don’t care. What they care about now are hard data points that can identify the shooter. The professional status of the killer is, at best, a flourish if the case reaches trial. Surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows the alleged suspect wanted for the shooting death of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. (NYPD) 2. The timeline is key Currently – and this is unsurprising – the tip line regarding the case is blowing up. But what detectives are most focused on are the indicators they can depend on, like: How did the shooter know that Thompson would show up for an 8:00 a.m. conference at 6:40 a.m.? Did the shooter have some access to Thompson’s schedule or movements? Recall that the shooter apparently "posted up" near the shooting location just minutes before the shooting. Was there an accomplice surveilling Thompson as he left his nearby hotel? Is that who the shooter was on the phone with, in the still photo NYPD released? And further to that question... 3. How did the shooter so instantly recognize Thompson? The shooter was along the building line across the street when Thompson came up the block. Video shows the shooter apparently recognizing Thompson from what must be at least 60 feet, in twilight, early-morning conditions. Again: How did he know Thompson was coming? Thompson was of a fairly commonplace build and appearance. How was he so sure this was his intended target? Particularly since he approaches Thompson from behind? It doesn’t seem likely that this could be done from a reference photo. One thing we can conclude: Thompson was the target – the messages on the shell casings left at the scene, whether a false flag or not, confirm this. 4. Digital data will be key The police reportedly recovered a phone in the alleyway "cut-through" that the shooter fled through from West 54th to West 55th Street. Was the shooter really that careless? If he was – and he did indeed make the phone call indicated by the still photo – this is crucial information. Legal processes will allow for search warrants to obtain the digital information to indicate who that call was to and the number it originated from (even if it was a disposable phone). While that may not lead to the shooter’s name, it could lead to all his activity on the burner phone – and to associates of the shooter who will almost certainly reveal his identity, either through interviews or simple context. A screenshot from surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows an alleged person of interest wanted in connection of the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. (NYPD Crime Stoppers ) Additionally, the shooter reportedly took an Uber at least once during his 10-day stay in the city. Uber accounts link to credit cards. Did he use his actual card? Even if he used a stolen card, if he took other Uber trips, his pattern can be ascertained. And as the shooter appears to have his flight path well-planned out, there is also the likelihood that he had previously walked that route. Is there video of him doing that before the shooting? Was his phone on during those walks? 5. Facial recognition is indeed important At this writing, with good face images of the shooter out there, many observers express frustration that he (if indeed the shooter is male) has not been at least identified. But: he may well have been, and the police have made the determination that they are more likely to apprehend him without revealing that they know his identity and/or likely whereabouts. This is especially true if they believe he has accomplices. The use of facial recognition software has likely already been important, as clear facial photos such as those reportedly obtained from the youth hostel may well have led to the discovery of the Greyhound bus to get to New York City. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION There are thousands of cameras that police facial recognition technology has access to, and there are many in-and-around midtown’s Port Authority (the location where buses to New York generally arrive to and depart from). Use of facial recognition technology could well lead to software matching the shooter to a public-facing social media or government account. 6. Traditional forensics are important – but perhaps less important just now While fingerprints are great evidence, if the shooter is not already in the system, they will only function here as confirmation (as in, for example, the Jose Ibarra conviction re: Laken Riley). The same goes for DNA. While great evidence at-trial, if the killer’s profile is not already in the CODIS system (the Combined DNA Index System), collected DNA may not help. But recall that in the Idaho case, familial DNA reportedly led to a lead to a family member of the suspect, Bryan Kohberger. If the shooter has a relative in one of the commercial DNA databases, this could lead to him. But it will take time. And as the shooter appears to have his flight path well-planned out, there is also the likelihood that he had previously walked that route. Is there video of him doing that before the shooting? Was his phone on during those walks? There are, of course, many other avenues the police are pursuing – reported threats to Thompson, those protesting against UnitedHealthCare, the unusual gun, the litigation Thompson was reportedly involved in, etc. But in the end, hard-and-fixed jumping off points are the "leads" most important to investigators now. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP And what those of us who opine on this crime should always recall: whatever the outcome, we are discussing the loss of a man’s life – a man with a family – to a cold-blooded murderer. That’s the most important fact underlying the entire case. The good news: it is almost impossible to get away with this sort of thing now, especially in midtown Manhattan. The NYPD will get this perpetrator – a simple matter of time. BJP cracks caste riddle in Jat belts, beats Cong, RLPTop Donald Trump confidante Kellyanne Conway confronted fellow conservative Meghan McCain backstage at a women’s summit, witnesses tell the Daily Beast. The tête-à-tête was over a grudge Conway has held for many years against McCain, for describing her and her then-husband George Conway as “gross” during TV appearances on The View and Watch What Happens Live. Conway confronted McCain after the two appeared together on a panel at The Washington Post’s post-election Global Women’s Summit. The event was organized by Tina Brown , the founder of the Daily Beast. ADVERTISEMENT After the on-stage panel discussion about the effect of the election on women ended, Conway confronted McCain in the green room just off stage in a scene “like something from the Real Housewives ,” an eyewitness told the Beast. “Kellyanne walked up to Meghan and said, ‘I wasn’t going to say this while I was miked but do you remember what you said about me and my marriage on The View ?‘“ the witness said. ”You called my marriage ‘gross.’“ Conway and McCain had not directly debated each other on the panel, adding to the surprise for witnesses that there was a confrontation, though Conway had appeared at times combative towards the moderator and audience, some witnesses said. Conway was heard saying to McCain, “Do you realize what you said and what you did? Do you realize all the people you hurt?” McCain, who quit The View in 2021 and is now a podcaster, appeared shaken over the confrontation, which lasted a matter of minutes, and keen to leave. Friends said she was later “shaking” with emotion. “I heard Meghan say to her, ‘I don’t remember what I said that hurt you,‘“ the witness said. McCain apologized to Conway, the witness said. “Meghan said it was making her uncomfortable but that seemed to make it worse.” McCain, 40, walked away from Conway, 57, who appeared unfazed. The witness said, “Meghan looked shaken and was just trying to get out of there.” The political divisions and tension within Conway’s family played out publicly, especially on social media, during Trump’s first presidency. While Conway was in the Oval Office advising Trump as counselor to the president, her husband George and eldest daughter Claudia were nearly incessantly tweeting and TikToking their dissent. At one point, Claudia said she wanted to emancipate herself from her mother, while her father did just that: he divorced his wife of 22 years with whom he shares four children in 2023. Claudia, now 20, and her mother have reconciled personally although they remain politically at odds. Conway told the Daily Beast, “I waited until the cameras and microphones were off to privately and calmly address the very public insults she has directed at my family.” Conway added, “She may wish to outrun her recent past as a years-long resident Mean Girl on The View and Bravo, where her mouth was a spigot of vile and bile hurled toward people and topics she does not know, including my marriage and children, and casually lying about silly things like me calling her (I don’t have her number).” McCain said, “It was a bizarre experience and certainly not what I expected when I accepted an invitation to speak at an event hosted by the Washington Post and Tina Brown. The only reason why their marriage was ever a hot topic was because they were constantly airing their dirty laundry to America.” The Beast established that Conway’s feelings were rooted in comments on multiple episodes of The View in 2018 and in April 2020 on NBC’s Watch What Happens Live , when she called both of the Conways “gross” and claimed that Conway would call her every time she mentioned her on air. In the 2020 segment, host Andy Cohen asked McCain, who has appeared on the show dozens of times, and fellow guest Erika Jayne, a cast member of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, to identify whether quotes were from “a president or a [Real] Housewife,” then had his guest, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) read the clue: “She is married to a total whack job. She must have done a number on him. I don’t know what he did to that guy.” McCain correctly identified it as having been said by Trump and being about Kellyanne and George Conway . Cohen then asked what she thought about the couple, who had become a fixture of political coverage for their directly opposed views on Trump almost at the start of his administration. That prompted McCain to say, “I think it’s awful and I think that they have four kids that are gonna read this c--p and I think it’s awful. I think it’s weird and I don’t care if it’s their kink or whatever I think it’s horrible... I think they’re both gross.” She added, “Wait can I say one more thing. Don’t call me or email me Kellyanne. She does that every time I say something.” Conway called that claim a “lie” in her 2022 memoir, Here’s The Deal , writing that she had never called McCain and did not even have her number. She wrote that they had only once exchanged emails, which was a “friendly” invitation from McCain to join The View and have dinner with both their husbands. In the book Conway called McCain a “know it all”; accused her of “ad nauseam, ad hominem attacks on me”; suggested she had “cashed in” on her father’s two failed presidential runs; and relayed a conversation with McCain’s husband Ben Domenech in which he said of his wife’s then-role, “ The View is the worst show on television.” Conway has not been a formal part of the Trump campaign or transition for his second term but has been a fierce public advocate for him in this election cycle, including as a columnist with DailyMail.com. Sources said that the confrontation by Conway at the women’s summit was the first proper meeting between the two. “It doesn’t look like there will be a second,” one friend said.

REFORM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge ruled that the family of former NFL player Glenn Foster Jr., who died in law enforcement custody in Alabama, can pursue a lawsuit alleging his death was the result of excessive force. Foster, a former New Orleans Saints defensive end, died on Dec. 6, 2021, three days after being arrested and taken to jail in rural Pickens County for alleged speeding and attempting to elude police. A judge ordered Foster taken to a medical facility in Tuscaloosa for a mental evaluation. Foster was found unresponsive in the back of a law enforcement vehicle when he arrived at the facility. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. His widow, Pamela Foster, filed a lawsuit against officers at the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and jail saying Foster had been beaten, shocked with a Taser and strangled while at the jail. The defendants then asked a federal judge to dismiss the case. U.S. District Judge Annemarie Carney Axon ruled Thursday refused to dismiss allegations of excessive force and failure to intervene. Axon dismissed other portions of the lawsuit. The ruling came a day before the third anniversary of Foster’s death. Foster appeared in 17 games for the Saints in 2013 and 2014.Two Red Sox received AL MVP votes for impressive 2024 showings | Sporting NewsWhy Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) Is the Best Fuel Stock to Buy Now?
NEW YORK — Shohei Ohtani won his third Most Valuable Player Award and first in the National League, and Aaron Judge earned his second American League honor on Thursday. Ohtani was a unanimous MVP for the third time, receiving all 30 first-place votes and 420 points in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 263 points and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte third with 229. Judge was a unanimous pick for the first time. Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. got all 30 second-place votes for 270 points, and Yankees outfielder Juan Soto was third with 21 third-place votes and 229 points. Ohtani was unanimously voted the AL MVP in 2021 and 2023 as a two-way star for the Los Angeles Angels and finished second to Judge in 2022 voting. He didn't pitch in 2024 following elbow surgery and signed a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. Ohtani joined Frank Robinson for Cincinnati in 1961 and Baltimore in 1966 as the only players to win the MVP award in both leagues. He was the first player to twice become an unanimous MVP. He had combined with Atlanta outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. in 2023 for the first year both MVPs were unanimous. Ohtani hit .310, stole 59 bases and led the NL with 54 homers and 130 RBIs exclusively as a designated hitter, becoming the first player with 50 or more homers and 50 or more stolen bases in a season. He helped the Dodgers to the World Series title, playing the final three games with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. "The ultimate goal from the beginning was to win a World Series, which we are able to accomplish," he said through a translator. "The next goal is for me to do it again and so right now I'm in the middle of rehab and working out and getting stronger." When Ohtani returns to the mound, could he win MVP and the Cy Young Award in the same year? "That would obviously be great, but right now my focus is just to get to get back healthy, come back stronger, get back on the mound and show everybody what I can do," Ohtani said. Ohtani became the first primary DH to win an MVP in a season that started with the revelation his longtime interpreter and friend, Ippei Mizuhara, had stolen nearly $17 million from the star to fund gambling. Ohtani is the 12th player with three or more MVPs, joining Barry Bonds (seven) and Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Mike Trout (three each). Balloting was conducted before the postseason. Judge led the major leagues with 58 homers, 144 RBIs and 133 walks while hitting .322. Witt topped the big leagues with a .332 average, hitting 32 homers with 31 stolen bases and 109 RBIs. Soto batted .288 with 41 homers and 109 RBIs. When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. Judge had discussed the MVP award with Philadelphia's Bryce Harper, the NL winner in 2015 and '21. "I was telling him, `Man, I'm going to try to catch up to you with these MVPs here, man,'" Judge recalled. "He'd say, hopefully, he could stay a couple ahead of me, which I think he'll do." When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. He is the Yankees' 22nd MVP winner, four more than any other team. Judge was hitting .207 with six homers and 18 RBIs through April, then batted .352 with 52 homers and 126 RBIs in 127 games. "March and April were not my friend this year." Judge said. "Just keep putting in the work and things are going to change. You can't mope. You can't feel sorry for yourself. Especially in New York, nobody's going to feel sorry for you. So you just got to go out there and put up the numbers?" ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg City Council reversed course Thursday on whether to spend more than $23 million to repair the hurricane-shredded roof of the Tampa Bay Rays' ballpark, initially voting narrowly for approval and hours later changing course. The reversal on fixing Tropicana Field came after the council voted to delay consideration of revenue bonds for a proposed new $1.3 billion Rays ballpark. Just two days before, the Pinellas County Commission postponed a vote on its share of the new stadium bonds, leaving that project in limbo. “This is a sad place. I'm really disappointed,” council chair Deborah Figg-Sanders said. “We won’t get there if we keep finding ways we can’t.” The Rays say the lack of progress puts the new stadium plan and the future of Tropicana Field in jeopardy. “I can't say I'm confident about anything,” Rays co-president Brian Auld told the council members. The Trop's translucent fiberglass roof was ripped to pieces on Oct. 9 when Hurricane Milton swept ashore just south of Tampa Bay. There was also significant water damage inside the ballpark, with a city estimate of the total repair costs pegged at $55.7 million. The extensive repairs cannot be finished before the 2026 season, city documents show. The Rays made a deal with the Yankees to play next season at 11,000-seat Steinbrenner Field, New York's spring training home across the bay in Tampa. The initial vote Thursday was to get moving on the roof portion of the repair. Once that's done, crews could begin working on laying down a new baseball field, fixing damaged seating and office areas and a variety of electronic systems — which would require another vote to approve money for the remaining restoration. The subsequent vote reversing funding for the roof repair essentially means the city and Rays must work on an alternative in the coming weeks so that Tropicana Field can possibly be ready for the 2026 season. The city is legally obligated to fix the roof. BRIEFLY PIRATES: Pittsburgh hired Matt Hague as its hitting coach, bringing him back to the team that drafted him in 2008. Hague replaces Andy Haines, who was fired after Pittsburgh finished in the bottom 10 in the majors in every significant statistical category last season, including runs (24th) and home runs (25th), while also striking out a club-record 1,504 times, second-most in the National League behind Colorado. The 39-year-old Hague spent last season as an assistant hitting coach with the Toronto Blue Jays. Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Through a combination of well-executed tactics, bravery on the battlefield, and overall masterful guerrilla warfare, a local resistance group shaped the outcome of the war in the Cumilla region. The Pathaan Bahini, led by Zahirul Haque Pathaan, a Bangalee subedar in the Pakistan Army, operated across a 1,000-square-mile area spanning 13 upazilas in Chandpur, Cumilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur. While visiting these districts in June of this year, The Daily Star interviewed over 30 Pathaan Bahini freedom fighters. Initially formed by former personnel and deserters of the Pakistani army, the force eventually grew to over 900 freedom fighters, including members from all walks of life, such as students, youths, and labourers. The force engaged in over 40 battles against Pakistani forces, displaying immense courage and bravery. The details of the war and the heroism of the Pathaan Bahini have been recorded in several books, including "Chandpur Zillar Muktijuddher Itihash" by Shahjahan Kabir, Bir Pratik, and "Muktijuddhe Chandpur" by Dr Delwar Hossain Khan, a Pathaan Bahini member. According to the books, force chief Zahirul was a well-known figure for his role in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, which earned him the "Tamgha-i-Jurat", the fourth highest military award of Pakistan. FORMATION In early 1971, Zahirul, serving under the 1st East Bengal Regiment, was stationed at Jessore Cantonment. In February, he was ordered to transfer to Lahore. However, he instead took a two-month leave to go to his village home in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur and assess the country's political situation. In March, following Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's call for a non-cooperation movement, a war committee was formed in Chandpur. As per the decision of the committee, a group of 30 young students were recruited for training in the Alipur village of Hajiganj. In the wake of the March 25 massacre, an emergency meeting of the war committee was convened at Paikpara School in Faridganj on April 8. Zahirul was entrusted with the leadership of the Mukti Bahini in Chandpur district. COMMAND STRUCTURE Zahirul initially divided the region surrounding Chandpur into six zones and assigned commanders to each to set up a defensive perimeter. Naik subedar Ali Akbar Patwari was appointed to oversee Hajiganj, Ramganj, Chatkhil, and parts of Raipur. Naik subedar Zahirul Islam was tasked with Matlab upazila; sergeant Joynal Abedin was responsible for Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar; Naik subedar Abdur Rab was assigned to Faridganj, Ramganj, and parts of Raipur; havildar Sirajul Islam was in charge of Kachua upazila; and Nayeb Subedar Mofiz was responsible for the headquarters and Shahrasti upazila. Initially, Paikpara School served as both the headquarters and training camp for the force. However, the headquarters was later relocated to Thakurbari in Pani Ali village of Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur. The Pathaan Bahini also had an intelligence unit, headed by Zahirul and force director Kalim Ullah Bhuiyan. Born on January 8, 1937, Zahirul Haque Pathaan died on January 27, 2024. Kalim Ullah Bhuiyan died on January 5, 2024. He was born in 1925. FIRST AMBUSH According to the book "Chandpur Zillar Muktijuddher Itihash", the force's first engagement of the war took place in the Gazipur union under Chandpur's Haimchar upazila. On April 27, upon learning that a launch carrying arms and ammunition for the Pakistani army was coming to Faridganj from Chandpur, Zahirul planned an ambush. Talking about the operation, freedom fighter Lutfar Rahman told The Daily Star, "As soon as the launch entered our ambush position near Gazipur Bazar, we attacked the Pakistani soldiers on board from three directions. "Several soldiers were killed, and the rest jumped into the river and fled to Dhanua. The launch, damaged by gunfire, sank in the Manikraj river." The following day, the freedom fighters salvaged the sunken launch, and from inside they recovered a large cache of munitions. LCOALS JOIN THE FIGHT The Battle of Khajuria was different from other battles, for it was joined not only by Pathaan fighters but also by local villagers armed with whatever they could find. According to the book, Bangladesher Swadhinota Juddho - Sector Bhittik Itihash (Sector-2)", on the morning of June 20, two platoons of freedom fighters were positioned at Kamta and Galla to counter the advance of Pakistani forces from Hajiganj and Chandpur. Simultaneously, another platoon was deployed at the WAPDA embankment near Khajuria to resist the Pakistani forces approaching from Ramganj and Noakhali. Another platoon was stationed on the road leading to Sonapur in Noakhali. At noon, as the freedom fighters at the WAPDA embankment sprung a surprise attack on the advancing Pakistani soldiers, the remaining platoons quickly rushed towards Khajuria. The local villagers also joined the fight alongside the freedom fighters. Freedom fighter Delwar Hossain said, "As we chased the Pakistani soldiers, we were joined by thousands of villagers from Khajuria Bazar, Rupsa, and Koroitoli, armed with machetes, axes, and other improvised weapons. Fearing for the safety of these civilians, Pathaan Sahib decided to withdraw and pull everyone back to safety. "As the retreating Pakistani army headed towards Gollak, they were ambushed by the freedom fighters from three sides. The attack resulted in the deaths of eight Pakistani soldiers." BATTLE OF SHASIALI Freedom fighter Sirajul Haque said the force used the school grounds in Battala, Nakipur, Kadra, and South Sahebganj as training camps and established positions in Toragarh, Lotra, Ugaria, and Naringpur Bazars. "Towards the end of the war, due to security concerns, we didn't have a fixed training camp. We would prop up makeshift training camps wherever we sought shelter," said Ajit Saha, another freedom fighter. Shasiali Madrasa in Faridganj served as one such training camp of the Pathaan Bahini. It was frequently targeted by Pakistani troops, resulting in several battles between the Pathaan Bahini and the Pakistani army. One such significant engagement took place on July 29, known as the Battle of Shasiali. On July 29, upon receiving intelligence about a Pakistani convoy of 15-16 boats advancing from Faridganj to capture the camp, Pathaan Bahini laid an ambush to intercept the enemy, said Sirajul Haque. "As the Pakistani soldiers entered the ambush, the freedom fighters opened fire. The surprise attack resulted in the deaths of six Pakistani soldiers, including an officer, and eight policemen, including a sub-inspector from Faridganj Police Station." The retreating Pakistani army encountered resistance from freedom fighters in several areas, including Shasiali, Kamalpur, and Patwari Bazar, leading to skirmishes, said Ajit Saha. "Some fleeing Pakistani soldiers hid in a house in Kamalpur. The freedom fighters surrounded the house and engaged in a fierce gun battle with the trapped soldiers. All the Pakistani soldiers were killed in the ensuing firefight, and Farooq, a freedom fighter, was injured." Other battles fought by Pathaan Bahini include the Battle of Thakur Bazar in Shahrasti in early May; the Battle of Ramchandrapur Kheyaghat in Balakhal, Hajiganj on May 17; the Battle of Naringpur in Shahrasti on July 15; the Battle of Hasnabad in Laksham, Cumilla on August 27-28; the Battle of Suchipara Kheyaghat on September 7; the attack on a Pakistani food convoy in Faridganj; and the Battle of Office Chitoshi on September 29. Additionally, the Pathaan Bahini fought against the Pakistani army on the Meghna River at Mohanpur, Matlab, in the first week of December. In October, Zahirul Haque Pathaan visited Kolkata, met with Sector 2 Commander Khaled Mosharraf, and provided a detailed report on the activities of his force. Following this meeting, Pathaan was appointed as the commander of the Chandpur-Madhumati sub-sector. Chandpur was liberated on December 8. Twenty-one days later, on December 29, the Pathaan Bahini surrendered their weapons at Chandpur Technical High School ground. Translated and edited from Bangla by Subrata Roy.REFORM, Ala. Foster appeared in 17 games for the Saints in 2013 and 2014.

Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal on Saturday lodged a complaint against an associate of endowment minister Konda Surekha, alleging that the Sri Raja Rajeshswara Swamy temple had handed over around 60 Rajanna Kodes (oxen donated by devotees) to him in violation of norms. In the complaint with the Geesukonda at Hanamkonda, they alleged that temple officials handed over 60 cows to Ram Babu, the minister’s associate, on August 12. They alleged Ram Babu dealt in cows and ran a goshala in the name of Sri Raja Rajeshwar Swamy in Geesukonda mandal. Devotees who visit Vemulawada temple offer Kode Mokku (donating cows and oxen) to the presiding deity. The donated cattle are kept in the temple’s goshala. Since it does not have enough space, the government decided to distribute extra cows to poor farmers under certain guidelines. All donated cows and oxen are tagged. Farmers have to apply to temple for cows with identity documents and land papers; their applications need to be endorsed by the local agriculture officer. Farmers who get the cows must not sell them. Geesukonda circle inspector K. Mahendar told Deccan Chronicle that on the complaint of the VHP, a case was registered against Ram Babu. An investigation is in progress to find out whether the cows Ram Babu got were from Vemulawada temple. A letter was also sent to the Vemulawada temple authorities seeking clarification, he added. Vemulawada temple executive officer K. Vinod Reddy, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, condemned the allegations and said that the temple officials had not distributed any cows to Ram Babu’s goshala. The temple has nothing to do with the minister’s purported recommendation letter which was circulated on social media, he said. A complaint will also be lodged with the local police regarding the issue and requesting an investigation. Meanwhile, the BJP staged a dharna in front of the temple office demanding suspension of EO Vinod Reddy. Reacting to the allegations, Surekha said it was an attempt to malign the Congress government. She said the temple had about 1,500 cows and oxen donated by devotees. The government had decided to distribute them to poor and eligible farmers who can look after them. Explaining the process of allotting cattle to farmers, she said applications received by a minister were sent to authorities concerned. The Vemulawada temple authorities distributed the cows following the norms. Cows and oxen distributed by the temple will have tags which are impossible to remove, she said. Stringent action would be taken against miscreants for spreading lies, she added.

(AP) — Garrett Greene and West Virginia’s other seniors savored one last chance to sing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” with fans after a home win. There haven’t been many victories at Mountaineer Field this season. But this one was enough to help the Mountaineers become eligible for a bowl game. “I definitely tried to soak it in a little more than than I usually do,” Greene said. “That’s the most special tradition in all of college sports.” Greene threw a touchdown pass in his final home game, CJ Donaldson had two short TD runs and West Virginia beat UCF 31-21 on Saturday. West Virginia (6-5, 5-3 Big 12) avoided losing for the fifth time at home, which hasn’t happened since 1990. Whether the win was enough for embattled coach Neal Brown to keep his job remains to be seen. Brown is 37-34 in six seasons. “I’m just happy for our guys, happy for our seniors, happy to get to six,” Brown said. “We’ve been up and down. Like, I don’t hide from that. We’re going to strive to get to seven.” UCF (4-7, 2-6) is assured of its second straight losing season under coach Gus Malzahn. He came out determined with 56 yards on his first four carries, including a 1-yard run on West Virginia’s opening series. West Virginia cornerback Dontez Fagan then recovered a fumble by UCF quarterback Dylan Rizk, and Donaldson ran for 28 more yards on the next series that was capped by Jahiem White’s 3-yard TD run. Early in the game, Donaldson “was kind of like in a different mode,” Greene said. Greene struggled in the passing game for most of the first half, then went 4 of 6 for 65 yards just before halftime, hitting Rodney Gallagher with a 12-yard TD toss for a 21-7 lead. Rizk went 11 of 21 for 172 yards, including a 45-yard scoring strike to Kobe Hudson. RJ Harvey, the Big 12’s leading rusher, ran for 130 yards and two scores, including a 9-yard TD run that brought UCF within 31-21 with 5:20 left. But the ensuing onside kick didn’t go the required 10 yards. Greene then converted a pair of fourth-down passes and West Virginia ran out the clock. Greene finished 13 of 21 for 118 yards and added 49 rushing yards. “The kid’s a winner,” Brown said of Greene. “He competes. I’m really happy for him that he performed and won in his last game here. I think he deserves that. I hope our fans appreciate him. He hasn’t always played clean football, but man, he’s laid it on the line for the Mountaineers every single time he’s suited up. And so, a fitting end for him.” The takeaway UCF: The Knights outgained West Virginia 348 yards to 318 but now have lost seven of eight games following a 3-0 start. West Virginia: The Mountaineers won despite being stuck in many third-and-long situations on offense against a solid effort from UCF’s defensive front. Up next UCF: Hosts Utah on Friday night. West Virginia: Finishes the regular season at Texas Tech next Saturday. ___ Get alerts on the latest AP Top 25 poll throughout the season. Sign up here .
