In order to ensure smooth and uninterrupted delivery of essential services and functioning of vital installations across the Kashmir Division, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting here at the Civil Secretariat, Srinagar. The meeting reviewed the preparedness of various departments to address challenges posed by harsh winter conditions, particularly in the snow-bound zones of Kashmir Valley and Jammu Division. The Chief Minister conducted a department-wise review of the winter preparedness measures of all line departments. He emphasized the need for a robust mechanism to minimize public inconvenience during severe weather conditions. The Chief Minister also engaged with Deputy Commissioners to assess district-level preparedness and urged them to prioritize timely and effective responses to weather-related challenges. Chief Minister Abdullah stressed the importance of keeping men and machinery in a state of readiness to ensure the routine functioning of essential installations. He directed departments to prioritize uninterrupted trade, transport, and essential supplies while addressing disruptions caused by snow, waterlogging, or power outages. On snow clearance, he was briefed that a sufficient number of hi-tech snow clearance machines have been deployed by the R&B Department, SMC, MED, BRO, and NHAI, with additional machines on standby to handle heavy snowfall. Instructions were given for providing transport service to expecting mothers in remote and far-flung areas. Highlighting the criticality of uninterrupted power supply during winter, the Chief Minister instructed KPDCL engineers to prioritize the restoration of electricity, particularly for essential installations. He called for timely replacement of damaged transformers and urged for protection of field staff with proper safety gear to prevent accidents during repair work. Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro defensive tackle Cam Heyward has been on a tear this season. Along with leading all DTs with 55 tackles , Heyward has eight sacks, 10 tackles for loss and eight pass defended. The last player who recorded 8+ sacks, 10+ TFL and 8+ pass defenses through their first 13 games of a season was J.J. Watt in 2014. Watt was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2014, which is why it’s pretty head-scratching that Heyward is not being considered for DPOY . Heyward is 35, but he’s playing like he’s 25. The 14-year veteran looks like he has plenty of left in the tank. “He is such a treat,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said on the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday. “He is playing lights out. His play has been top tier. He is playing as good as he has ever played. He’s an ageless wonder. But I also just really appreciate that he is Pittsburgh born and raised. “We drafted this guy in 2011, and just to watch him grow as a player and a human, it’s been cool to be a part of that. And it really just makes my day easy, to be quite honest with you. That dude understands what we’re doing here, our approach to business, our culture, our values. He embodies all of those things.” With two sacks in a 27-14 home win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday Heyward pushed his career sack total to 88.5. There’s a common theme in what the 14th-year veteran is striving for, all the way down to his goal in that statistical category. “More,” Heyward said, smiling behind the podium microphone. With the pair takedowns of Jameis Winston, Heyward passed up Justin Smith and Leonard Little on the NFL’s official list of sack leaders, according to Pro Football Reference . Against Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia next week, Heyward will be chasing down Ken Harvey (89), Tamba Hali and Bryant Young (89.5), and maybe even Trent Cole (90.5) on that leaderboard. “I think, for me, there’s more to improve on, more to keep going after,” said Heyward, who finished the day with five tackles and two tackles for loss, as well. “There’s a hunger for me that I’m not satisfied with what I’ve done in the past, and I expect a lot more of myself.” Heyward is a three-time first-team All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler. Watt has more sacks than him in Steelers history. Heyward also was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2023. NFL historian John Turney thinks Heyward has done enough to warrant a Gold Jacket. Turney believes Heyward’s accomplishments match up with other Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive linemen. “As it is, his three All-Pros are similar to others who played his position — a 3-4 defensive end in a base defense and a defensive tackle in passing downs. Howie Long did that. So did Richard Seymour. Both were All-Pro three times, with Long going to eight Pro Bowls and Seymour seven,” Turney wrote in June . “Lee Roy Selmon, a pure 3-4 end who didn’t ‘sink’ to defensive tackle, was also a three-time All-Pro. Two guys who played multiple positions — Dan Hampton and Joe Klecko — could also be considered for comparison, with Hampton a four-time All-Pro and Klecko chosen twice.” It’s not a must, but a Super Bowl title would certainly increase Heyward’s Hall of Fame odds. He might’ve already accomplished enough to get in, but a Super Bowl title would make him a shoo-in to Canton. Reaching 100 career sacks also might solidify his case. Heyward said this offseason that he wants to play for at least three more years. With how he’s playing now, he might push five more years and play into his 40s. Turner, 52, who was named executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council in 2019, is the first Black person selected to be a member of the Republican’s new cabinet. Article content Matthew Waples is pumped up about the possibility of launching his own graphic design business. The craft has been his stock and trade for more than 20 years; he’s worked for others, is currently freelancing and is now determined to put more of his personal stamp on product. “I know the T-shirt industry ... it’s kind of my niche,” says the Sault Ste. Marie man. A business-owner buddy has agreed to back the project. Everything appears geared to go. There’s just one wrench. Waples, 43, was diagnosed earlier this year with t esticular cancer and is being further tested for what could be adrenal-gland cancer. It is, indeed, a major setback, but Waples says he’s determined to see the ordeal through and come out the other side happy and successful, working for himself doing what he loves. “Now I’ve got to stay alive,” Waples told The Sault Star in an interview. “That’s a carrot that makes me ... I have a goal and a dream. So, once I get through this, I have something to do. It’s keeping me wanting to stay here.” Waples said he’s been told the testicular cancer appears to have been initially caused by a mass on his adrenal gland above the kidney. Currently, surgery to remove the affected testicle is slated for December, followed by chemotherapy. But things may happen sooner given grim news Waples recently received. On Nov. 18, Waples went to hospital with “severe” testicle pain and was told the tumour had doubled in size in only two months. Surgery may very well be bumped up if pain does not subside. Waples remembers well – and exactly what he was doing – the day things really began to go south. It was June 24, the day the Florida Panthers captured their first Stanley Cup in franchise history with a 2-1 Game 7 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Waples, who drums, was moving instruments with a friend when he began experiencing severe pain. “I was like, ‘What the f#@k is going on here?’” he recalled thinking. He initially thought it was hernia; d rumming and playing goalie in hockey when he was younger have yielded back problems for years. “I don’t like to go to the hospital unless I have to,” Waples said. But a nurse friend insisted he go to the emergency department just to be sure. Testing ultimately revealed the cancer. Naturally, Waples was shocked and scared. But there were warning signs. Over the past year, he suffered “significant” weight loss and took it upon himself to at least start eating better. “When I was younger, I ate garbage, and I didn’t take care of myself, and I put the wrong things in my body,” he said. “And I think that, in part, that’s why things are happening now.” His past has prompted him to be public about his illness. “There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes, but you’ve got to turn things around if you want to survive,” Waples said. Candour also serves another purpose. The testicle removal will likely take place in the Sault, but further procedures and treatment will likely have to be carried out in southern Ontario, likely Toronto. Waples, who is on ODSP and doesn’t currently have a vehicle, fears flights to Toronto will be beyond his means. Northern Health Travel Grant benefits alone wouldn’t likely cut it, either, as travel costs are shouldered up front. “And I have zero means of getting it before the fact,” Waples said. Currently single, he also wants to have sperm frozen should he decide, later on, to start a family. “I don’t know what the future holds ... I’ve always wanted a family,” Waples said. “If the drive that I have to accomplish everything after this life-changing thing, if that is to come to fruition and I meet a girl who is 10 years younger than me and wants a family, and I can even give the possibility of that.” A GoFundMe page ( https://www.gofundme.com/f/MattWaplesCancer ) has been set up. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by announcing plans Monday to hand more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family’s foundations, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it’s possible that Buffett’s children could die before giving it all away. He didn’t identify the successors, but said his kids all know them and agree they would be good choices. “Father time always wins. But he can be fickle – indeed unfair and even cruel – sometimes ending life at birth or soon thereafter while, at other times, waiting a century or so before paying a visit,” the 94-year-old Buffett said in a letter to his fellow shareholders. “To date, I’ve been very lucky, but, before long, he will get around to me. There is, however, a downside to my good fortune in avoiding his notice. The expected life span of my children has materially diminished since the 2006 pledge. They are now 71, 69 and 66.” Buffett said he still has no interest in creating dynastic wealth in his family — a view shared by his first and current wives. He acknowledged giving Howard, Peter and Susie millions over the years, but he has long said he believes “hugely wealthy parents should leave their children enough so they can do anything but not enough that they can do nothing.” The secret to building up such massive wealth over time has been the power of compounding interest and the steady growth of the Berkshire conglomerate Buffett leads through acquisitions and smart investments like buying billions of dollars of Apple shares as iPhone sales continued to drive growth in that company. Warren Buffett’s giving to date has favored the Gates Foundation with $55 billion in stock because his friend Bill Gates already had his foundation set up and could handle huge gifts when Buffett started giving away his fortune. But Buffett has said his kids now have enough experience in philanthropy to handle the task and he plans to cut off his Gates Foundation donations after his death. Buffett always makes his main annual gifts to all five foundations every summer, but for several years now he has been giving additional Berkshire shares to his family’s foundations at Thanksgiving.
