Hyperallergic’s tarotscope series is a combination of tarot with astrology, a reading for the collective readership combined with cards for the major astrological signs, grouped by their elemental associations, developed by AX Mina, producer for Five and Nine , a podcast about magic, work and economic justice. These tarotscopes have a special focus on the arts and creative practice, for each solstice and equinox, to mark the turning of the seasons. The winter solstice sets into the northern hemisphere during a time of metaphorical winter around the world. Mars has entered retrograde, and we see just a few more days left of the Strength Year (in the tarot system) before giving way to the Hermit Year. Let this hermit energy guide you, for winter is a time of slowing down and storing energy for us mammals as we prepare for more energetic days to come. This season’s tarotscope is read using the Mixed Signals Tarot , designed by artist M Eilo . These readings were drawn during a mild Brooklyn morning at the start of the retrograde, in this 12th month of the Strength Year (in the tarot system) and 11th month of the Dragon Year (in the East Asian lunar system). Many stones have emerged in this reading. In this deck, they are like the pentacles, but drawn to more explicitly represent the earth. In last season’s reading , we learned of “big and transformative energies in the collective air,” and now the larger message is to find grounding. For this winter equinox, we read with the Seed Root Garden spread , developed by Dorothy R. Santos and Xiaowei R. Wang, as we look toward the new year. Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic. Daily Weekly Opportunities And we start with an inquiry: What do artists need to know as we prepare for the end of the Strength Year and usher in the Hermit Year? Collective Tarot Reading Seed: Fighter of Stones Root: The Hermit These two cards mark the collective context: A court card from the Minor Arcana, representing daily affairs, and a Major Arcana card, representing archetypal forces. The Fighter of Stones, also known as the Knight of Pentacles in the popular Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) deck , here represents the Seed position. This is what has been collectively planted. In this deck, a smaller force collides with a larger one, and those who understand physics know that even small things can shape the trajectories of large objects in unexpected ways . I recently learned, for example, that some human-made structures can alter the rotation of the Earth , and it was a reminder that even the Earth itself, steady and solid as it seems beneath our bodies, is ever changing, spinning and floating through space like the rest of us. We read this card alongside the Root, representing what is growing. The Hermit card, with its three eyes, reminds us of unknowingness and intuition. This is the card of searching, of yearning, and of being comfortable with the uncertainty that today and tomorrow bring. It’s a card of spiritual pursuit, whatever that means for you. Read together, we see now that we are on a new journey. A series of events that may seem outside our control and influence has changed the trajectory, yet these events are made possible by our cultural and societal norms. As artists, we all have the ability to alter trajectories, like little asteroids in space, where even the tiniest bump or nudge of awakening can lead others into unexpected directions. This is the time to deepen our collective practice and ask questions that have been bubbling up quietly from the heart. Think of those moments from the past year that broke you and yet you somehow emerged from. “You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read,” James Baldwin once said. “It was Dostoevsky and Dickens who taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who ever had been alive. Only if we face these open wounds in ourselves can we understand them in other people.” Baldwin cited writers, but artists have also held me during times of solitude and confusion. Perhaps your art will do the same for others. Now the question is the Garden, or the conditions in which the Root will grow and bear fruit. The Garden position completes this three-card spread, and it is customized to your elementary signs — an additional card is drawn to elaborate on the solution for your element. Read for the elements calling to you now, whether associated with your Sun, rising, or Moon sign, or simply one that speaks to you at this time in your life. Remember that nothing written here is a direction or imposition; these are merely flickering lights offered along the path we all make for ourselves. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) Method: Two of Stones The two stones in the Two of Stones roll through a landscape — or is it a series of waves? This card asks you to consider how you balance multiple forces and energies. While balance requires emotional fortitude, the Stone suit posits that some effort and planning are necessary to work through it all. Your fire energy will be needed in the coming months, and this card suggests that now is a good time gather and hone the tools to help you maintain balance when you summon that fire. This could be as simple as getting your bookkeeping in order or cleaning your studio. Or it could be more complex, like beginning therapy or starting a meditation practice. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) Method: Two of Wands In the Two of Wands, two branches merge and intersect. Witnessing something like this is always a beautiful moment on my hikes in nature, or when I’m tending to my plants. The wand’s energy is the qi , the spark of life, and you’re being asked to look at the little things growing in your life right now. Perhaps there is a new branch in your creative practice, or someone in your life is sparking a new collaboration. Your Earth energy will be helpful here. Like a gentle gardener, practice tenderly watering these new directions, grafting them, seeing where they go. By this time next year, you may be surprised where your creative practice has taken you. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) Method: Three of Stones The Three of Stones is often the card of laying down foundations and making plans with others. In this rendering, each stone forms a layer in your practice, but they have yet to joined together. In this time of wintering, you’re invited to flow with the Air energies that move through your mind and start laying down your plan, or concepts of a plan, so to speak. That might look like making a project spreadsheet or gathering your collaborators for a meeting. Collect the stones and be ready to get to work. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) Method: Five of Cups Of all elements, yours is the one swimming in emotions, and this Five of Cups card only emphasizes that. They break, come apart, shatter, and like the yin and yang, it’s in the brokenness that the seed of something new is sprouting. The greatest wisdom often lies in not turning away and simply allowing the hurt to hurt. Remember the Baldwin quote above. Water is what connects us all in our beautiful and fragile humanity. Instead, they’re tied to the billionaire’s new Montessori school outside Bastrop, Texas, called Ad Astra, according to documents filed with state authorities and obtained via a Texas Public Information Act request. The world’s richest person oversees an overlapping empire of six companies — or seven, if you include his political action committee. Alongside rockets, electric cars, brain implants, social media and the next Trump administration, he is increasingly focused on education, spanning preschool to college. One part of his endeavor was revealed last year, when Bloomberg News reported that his foundation had set aside roughly $100 million to create a technology-focused primary and secondary school in Austin, with eventual plans for a university. An additional $137 million in cash and stock was allotted last year, according to the most recent tax filing for the Musk Foundation. Ad Astra is closer to fruition. The state documents show Texas authorities issued an initial permit last month, clearing the way for the center to operate with as many as 21 pupils. Ad Astra’s website says it’s “currently open to all children ages 3 to 9.” The school’s account on X includes job postings for an assistant teacher for preschool and kindergarten and an assistant teacher for students ages 6 to 9. To run the school, Ad Astra is partnering with a company that has experience with billionaires: Xplor Education, which developed Hala Kahiki Montessori school in Lanai, Hawaii, the island 98% owned by Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison. Ad Astra sits on a highway outside Bastrop, a bedroom community about 30 miles from Austin and part of a region that’s home to several of Musk’s businesses. On a visit during a recent weekday morning, there was a single Toyota Prius in the parking lot and no one answered the door at the white building with a gray metal roof. The school’s main entrance was blocked by a gate, and there was no sign of any children on the grounds. But what information there is about Ad Astra makes it sound like a fairly typical, if high-end, Montessori preschool. The proposed schedule includes “thematic, STEM-based activities and projects” as well as outdoor play and nap time. A sample snack calendar features carrots and hummus. While Birchall’s and Balajadia’s names appear in the application, it isn’t clear that they’ll have substantive roles at the school once it’s operational. Musk, Birchall and Balajadia didn’t respond to emailed questions. A phone call and email to the school went unanswered. Access to high quality, affordable childcare is a huge issue for working parents across the country, and tends to be an especially vexing problem in rural areas like Bastrop. Many families live in “childcare deserts” where there is either not a facility or there isn’t an available slot. Opening Ad Astra gives Musk a chance to showcase his vision for education, and his support for the hands-on learning and problem solving that are a hallmark of his industrial companies. His public comments about learning frequently overlap with cultural concerns popular among conservatives and the Make America Great Again crowd, often focusing on what he sees as young minds being indoctrinated by teachers spewing left-wing propaganda. He has railed against diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and in August posted that “a lot of schools are teaching white boys to hate themselves.” Musk’s educational interests dovetail with his new role as Trump’s “first buddy.” The billionaire has pitched a role for himself that he — and now the incoming Trump administration — call “DOGE,” or the Department of Government Efficiency. Though it’s not an actual department, DOGE now posts on X, the social media platform that Musk owns. “The Department of Education spent over $1 billion promoting DEI in America’s schools,” the account posted Dec. 12. Back in Texas, Bastrop is quickly becoming a key Musk point of interest. The Boring Co., his tunneling venture, is based in an unincorporated area there. Across the road, SpaceX produces Starlink satellites at a 500,000-square-foot (46,000-square-meter) facility. Nearby, X is constructing a building for trust and safety workers. Musk employees, as well as the general public, can grab snacks at the Boring Bodega, a convenience store housed within Musk’s Hyperloop Plaza, which also contains a bar, candy shop and hair salon. Ad Astra is just a five-minute drive away. It seems to have been designed with the children of Musk’s employees — if not Musk’s own offspring — in mind. Musk has fathered at least 12 children, six of them in the last five years. “Ad Astra’s mission is to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in the next generation of problem solvers and builders,” reads the school’s website. A job posting on the website of the Montessori Institute of North Texas says “While their parents support the breakthroughs that expand the realm of human possibility, their children will grow into the next generation of innovators in a way that only authentic Montessori can provide.” The school has hired an executive director, according to documents Bloomberg obtained from Texas Health and Human Services. Ad Astra is located on 40 acres of land, according to the documents, which said a 4,000-square-foot house would be remodeled for the preschool. It isn’t uncommon for entrepreneurs to take an interest in education, according to Bill Gormley, a professor emeritus at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University who studies early childhood education. Charles Butt, the chairman of the Texas-based H-E-B grocery chain, has made public education a focus of his philanthropy. Along with other business and community leaders, Butt founded “Raise Your Hand Texas,” which advocates on school funding, teacher workforce and retention issues and fully funding pre-kindergarten. “Musk is not the only entrepreneur to recognize the value of preschool for Texas workers,” Gormley said. “A lot of politicians and business people get enthusiastic about education in general — and preschool in particular — because they salivate at the prospect of a better workforce.” Musk spent much of October actively campaigning for Trump’s presidential effort, becoming the most prolific donor of the election cycle. He poured at least $274 million into political groups in 2024, including $238 million to America PAC, the political action committee he founded. While the vast majority of money raised by America PAC came from Musk himself, it also had support from other donors. Betsy DeVos, who served as education secretary in Trump’s first term, donated $250,000, federal filings show. The Department of Education is already in the new administration’s cross hairs. Trump campaigned on the idea of disbanding the department and dismantling diversity initiatives, and he has also taken aim at transgender rights. “Rather than indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material, which is what we’re doing now, our schools must be totally refocused to prepare our children to succeed in the world of work,” Trump wrote in Agenda 47, his campaign platform. Musk has three children with the musician Grimes and three with Shivon Zilis, who in the past was actively involved at Neuralink, his brain machine interface company. All are under the age of five. Musk took X, his son with Grimes, with him on a recent trip to Capitol Hill. After his visit, he shared a graphic that showed the growth of administrators in America’s public schools since 2000. Musk is a fan of hands-on education. During a Tesla earnings call in 2018, he talked about the need for more electricians as the electric-car maker scaled up the energy side of its business. On the Joe Rogan podcast in 2020, Musk said that “too many smart people go into finance and law.” “I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters,” Musk said while campaigning for Trump in Pennsylvania in October. “That’s a lot more important than having incremental political science majors.” Ad Astra’s website says the cost of tuition will be initially subsidized, but in future years “tuition will be in line with local private schools that include an extended day program.” “I do think we need significant reform in education,” Musk said at a separate Trump campaign event. “The priority should be to teach kids skills that they will find useful later in life, and to leave any sort of social propaganda out of the classroom.” With assistance from Sophie Alexander and Kara Carlson. ©2024 Bloomberg News. Arsenal show they could be Champions League favorites: Martin Odegaard powers 5-1 Gunners romp over SportingElon Musk has made the concept of slashing waste popular, and he has “ink by the barrel,” Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) said during an appearance on Breitbart News Daily . Speaking about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), host Mike Slater expressed concern that some members of Congress will not have the courage to do what is right and cut spending. “My comment to Vivek and Elon — one of the last speakers on stage was speaking to Elon, when I said this: ‘You’ve made it popular. You’ve made the concept of cutting right now popular, and you have ink by the barrel,'” Brecheen responded. “So my enthusiasm is the power of the thousands and thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of X followers — that he could put one post out that people pay attention to,” Brecheen said. “And I said, ‘You know, you’ve got the ability to lift the roof off this building,'” he said. He said some of his colleagues beholden to their donors will, in fact, play the game and resist spending cuts, but he said Musk has the ability to “lift the roof off this building and bring transparency and create that naughty list of who gets coal in their stockings moving ahead, because they refuse to implement the full agenda of what President Trump talked about.” LISTEN: “It’s not just the excitement of the economy,” he added, noting that they can get the “economy roaring again” if they deal with inflation, which is directly connected to the efforts of DOGE to slash spending. “Inflation is caused by devaluation of the currency because of overspending — the $2 trillion every year we’re overspending. We’ve lost 25 percent of the dollar’s value just since 2020, January 2020,” he added. “We can get it back, and I know you’ll follow through,” Slater told the congressman. Bitcoin ( BTC 1.30% ) enthusiasts are rejoicing as the cryptocurrency continues to set new all-time highs. Earlier this month it surpassed its long-held high of just under $74,000 and in a few short weeks it's up more than 25%. Priced at $100,000, a target once many investors could only dream about, is squarely within striking distance as I'm writing this on November 20. The timing of this run is hardly a coincidence, or so it would seem. The president-elect and his incoming administration are considered to be very friendly to Bitcoin and crypto as a whole. Investors are hoping he delivers on his campaign promises. What his actual policies will be here remains to be seen. But he has indeed signaled a pro-crypto approach, going as far as to say he intends to make America the "crypto capital of the world." So, with Bitcoin nearing the $100,000 mark and "crypto euphoria" in full swing, is now a good time to buy? Spot ETFs were a game changer In January, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved Bitcoin spot ETFs , enabling asset management giants like BlackRock to start offering these products. This decision significantly broadened market access for investors large and small. These ETFs are traded through traditional brokerages the same way you would buy and sell shares of Apple , removing the complexities involved in trading through crypto exchanges. The ETFs are strictly regulated by the SEC, adding a layer of trust and legitimacy that has broadened the type of investor interested in Bitcoin. The ETFs have spurred a wave of investment from institutional investors. Aside from the regulatory stamp of approval and ease of access, ETFs provide enhanced liquidity and lead to an "efficient" market in which the price of Bitcoin more accurately reflects its true value. This is a critical component for most investors of this kind. Institutions are necessary for Bitcoin's long-term success For Bitcoin to continue to grow, it needs to do so at a rate that justifies the perceived risk in the eyes of investors. Although the introduction of ETFs and the influx of institutional capital over the last few years has reduced that perception of risk, at least for now, it's still considered a more risky place to park your money than stocks. That means it needs to offer growth that outpaces the stock market, and the only way it can grow at that pace is if a whole lot more capital is invested. Bitcoin has come a long way in broadening its base of investors, but it still remains a somewhat niche market. Less than 15% of adults own a digital asset while nearly two-thirds of Americans own stocks. There is still a lot of fear; 63% of U.S. adults say they are not very or not at all confident that crypto is safe. Interestingly, despite their comparatively late buy-in, a much higher share of institutional investors have exposure -- about 60% have at least 1% of their assets invested. It seems to me that it will be an easier sell for those institutions to increase their exposure by 1 or 2 percentage points, than for a significant portion of the retail market to change their views on Bitcoin. But 1% to 2% represents a huge amount of capital, and it may bring the growth needed to push the more cautious retail investors into the market. The question at hand Warren Buffett famously said that investors should aim "to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful." With Bitcoin smashing records and nearing $100,000, it seems that greed has overtaken the market and now might be a good time to hold off. That's a reasonable interpretation and if you are a more risk-averse investor, it could be the right move. No one wants to buy in at the top, right? However, given the nearly two-thirds of Americans who are still fearful of crypto, perhaps we are still in the "when others are fearful" paradigm. Sure, buying in at the bottom will always be the best case. The problem is you and I are pretty bad at knowing just when that is. It's entirely possible to wait for a crash that never comes. And here's the thing -- over time, the penalty for buying in at the very top of bull runs isn't as big as you might think. Over the last 70 years, if you bought in each time the S&P 500 hit an all-time high, you would only return about 1% less than if you spread that investment out over time. If you had bought at the last time Bitcoin hit a multi-year peak, in November of 2021, you would currently be up nearly 50%. That would be almost twice the return of the S&P 500 over the same period.Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100
On Dec. 11, President-elect Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post that he has tapped Kari Lake to serve as the next director of Voice of America. Lake was a television news anchor in Phoenix for nearly three decades until she left in 2021 after making a series of controversial statements on social media, including sharing COVID-19 misinformation during the pandemic. She launched her political career a short time later, quickly building a following and national profile as she sparred with journalists and echoed Trump in her sharp criticism of what she called the “fake news.” She ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for Arizona governor in 2022 and Arizona Senator in 2024. After Trump’s announcement, many people on social media claimed they’d never heard of Voice of America before. Others asked if Trump created a new organization and position just for Lake. Recent search trends also show that “What is Voice of America?” is spiking online. Is Voice of America a new government organization? No, Voice of America is not a new government organization. Sign up for the VERIFY Fast Facts daily Newsletter! Voice of America is not new. It’s a U.S. government-funded international multimedia news organization that was founded in the 1940s. Voice of America started in 1942 as a radio broadcaster to “combat Nazi propaganda with accurate and unbiased news and information.” Congress funds the organization through the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which is a federal agency that oversees all non-military U.S. international broadcasting. Congress passed a law establishing the organization in 1976. According to Voice of America’s congressional charter , the organization is required to present objective, independent news and information to international audiences. These are the principles that govern all Voice of America broadcasts: Since it was founded more than 80 years ago, Voice of America has expanded to online, social and television platforms to share U.S. policy-centric content around the world. The organization currently broadcasts to an estimated weekly global audience of more than 354 million people in nearly 50 languages. Although Trump says he wants Lake to lead Voice of America, that role is actually appointed by the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which is a position appointed by the president that requires congressional confirmation. Trump said on Dec. 11 that he plans to announce his nomination for the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media soon. The Associated Press contributed to this report .NEW YORK — I’ll get you, my pretty! And your little pygmy hippo, too! Forgive us the shameless attempt to link the fantasy hit “Wicked” to the delightful Moo Deng . But, hear us out — there’s something the two have in common as the year draws to a close. Escapism. Whether we found it on the yellow brick road, or in videos from a Thailand zoo, or perhaps in unlikely Olympic heroes , we gravitated toward fantasy and feel-good pop culture moments this year. There were new trends, as always. “Brat summer” became a thing, as did “demure, mindful.” And for some inexplicable reason, we became obsessed with celebrity lookalike contests. There were breakups — Bennifer is, again, a thing of the past — and reunions: Oasis, please try to stay together for the tour. Yet some things stayed, remarkably, the same: Taylor Swift and Beyoncé kept on breaking records and making history. So, after a year where much changed but some things held steady, here’s our annual, very selective trip down pop culture memory lane: Lily Gladstone poses in the press room Jan. 7 with the award for best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama for "Killers of the Flower Moon" at the 81st Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif. It starts as a cheery tweet from a beloved “Sesame Street” figure: “ ELMO is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” The answers hint at something deeper and more worrisome. “Not great, Elmo. Not great,” says one milder reply. Doing much better is the viral phenomenon called “BARBENHEIMER,” which makes its awards season debut at the GOLDEN GLOBES . But perhaps the most poignant moment comes from neither film: LILY GLADSTONE , first Indigenous winner of best actress in a drama for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” begins her remarks in the language of her tribe, Blackfeet Nation. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) kisses Taylor Swift on Feb. 11 after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime during the NFL Super Bowl 58 football game in Las Vegas. Valentine’s Day — a perfect time to settle into a sweet love saga via TikTok. Only that’s not quite what we get with “Who TF Did I Marry?,” REESA TEESA ’s depressing, fascinating, 50-part account of her disastrous marriage with a man who lied about absolutely everything. Meanwhile, if you're looking for a single week that encapsulates peak SWIFT cultural dominance , try this: she begins with the Grammys in Los Angeles (becoming the first artist to win album of the year four times AND announcing a new album), then heads to Tokyo for four tour dates, then jets back just in time for the Super Bowl in Las Vegas — where she shares a passionate smooch with boyfriend TRAVIS KELCE on the field of victory. Ryan Gosling performs the song "I'm Just Ken" from the movie "Barbie" on March 10 during the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. “What was I made for?” BILLIE EILISH sings at the OSCARS, channeling BARBIE . And what was KEN made for? Not entirely clear — but it's clear RYAN GOSLING was made to play him. His singalong version of “I’m Just Ken” is one of the most entertaining Oscar musical moments in years. Still, Christopher Nolan's “OPPENHEIMER” prevails, a rare case of the top prize going to a blockbuster studio film. Will it happen again in 2025? CYNTHIA ERIVO and ARIANA GRANDE sure hope so; as presenters, they make a sly reference to their upcoming juggernaut, “WICKED.” Speaking of marketing, people are obsessed with that bizarre “DUNE” popcorn bucket. Beyonce And BEYONCÉ carves her space in country music with “Act II: Cowboy Carter,” which will make her the first Black woman to top the Billboard country chart. Taylor Swift performs June 21 at Wembley Stadium in London as part of her Eras Tour. Tennis, anyone? The game’s been around for centuries, but it’s having a cultural moment right now, helped mightily by “CHALLENGERS,” the sweaty romance triangle starring ZENDAYA, MIKE FAIST and JOSH O'CONNOR (40-love? More like 40-sex.) Elsewhere, a new era dawns: At midnight, SWIFT drops “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT," then drops another 15 songs two hours later. The fascinating and disturbing “BABY REINDEER,” the story of a struggling comedian’s extended encounter with a stalker, debuts on Netflix. Ben Affleck, left, and Jennifer Lopez arrive Feb. 13 at the premiere of "This Is Me ... Now: A Love Story" at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. It’s MET GALA time — or as it's known in 2024, another early marketing moment for “WICKED.” ERIVO and GRANDE make fashion waves on the carpet and then musical ones at dinner, with a soulful performance of “When You Believe.” If the “Wicked” tour is in full force, another one stops in its tracks: JENNIFER LOPEZ cancels her summer tour amid reports of both poor ticket sales and trouble in her marriage to BEN AFFLECK . It’s been an eventful year for J.Lo, who's released an album and movie called “THIS IS ME ... NOW" — both reflections on her renewed love with Affleck. Welcome to BRAT SUMMER ! CHARLI XCX releases her hit “Brat” album , with its lime green cover, and launches a thousand memes. Collins Dictionary defines “brat,” its word of the year, as “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.” At the celeb-heavy SWIFT shows in London, we see PRINCE WILLIAM shaking it off, which is either charming or cringe, you decide. Even better: KELCE dons a top hat and tux and performs for one night. At another stadium across the pond, METS infielder JOSE IGLESIAS delights the crowd with his cheery number “OMG.” Stephen Nedoroscik is introduced June 29 at the United States Gymnastics Olympic Trials in Minneapolis. Bonjour, it’s OLYMPICS time! In Paris! An audacious opening ceremony along the Seine is punctuated by a fabulous CELINE DION , perched on the EIFFEL TOWER , singing her heart out — in the rain, too. Controversy swirls over a scene critics feel mocks Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (organizers say it does not). Olympic stars are born — including French swimming superstar LEON MARCHAND , rugby player ILONA MAHER , and bespectacled “Pommel Horse Guy” gymnast STEPHEN NEDOROSCIK , who nets two bronze medals and comparisons to Clark Kent. Baby pigmy hippo Moo Deng plays with a zookeeper Sept. 19 in the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, Thailand. Also capturing hearts: yep, MOO DENG , born this month. Her name means “bouncy pork.” Australia's Rachael Gunn, known as B-Girl Raygun, competes Aug. 9 during the Round Robin Battle at the breaking competition at La Concorde Urban Park at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
