North Macedonian political party demands ban on TikTok after at least 17 students injuredOne of my favorite writers has always been George Orwell. There is a quote commonly attributed to him that I’ve been turning over in my mind for awhile now: “Journalism is printing something that someone does not want printed. Everything else is public relations.” The essential truth of this quote is that sometimes in order to do real journalism, you have to hack people off. I don’t think I’ve ever worked at a job where I’ve done that more than my position here. And, in my case, I feel like I’ve managed to hack everybody off from council members, to residents, to the city manager and staff etc. But being able to do true accountability journalism, like what Orwell is referencing here, is something that a lot of reporters aspire to but I’m not sure actually achieve. There is a tendency, as the newsrooms in which the reporter gets hired get bigger and as their career continues to grow and as they develop relationships with the people they cover, that the hunger and the drive to chase down corruption and injustice start to fade until they more or less begin to pander. Noam Chomsky described in “Manufacturing Consent” a system where the gigantic media conglomerates encourage complicity and where outlying reporters who challenge the status quo lose their access. If you watch major news outlets, you can sometimes see this happening even in real time. It is only the reporters and the journalists who maintain the status quo who feed into the self-perpetuating machine of compliance that end up working in some of these legacy media organizations. Local news outlets, such as the Herald, work outside of these enormous power structures. For instance, the Herald is family owned and relatively small. In the United States, six corporations own nearly all of the major news outlets. That kind of consolidation of information in the hands of so few people is a problem that we as a country probably need to reckon with sooner rather than later. The fact that the Herald is so focused on the city of Killeen and a handful of smaller communities here means that it can really report the news that matters to the people who live here. Orwell’s quote doesn’t necessarily fit every situation neatly. For example, we do sometimes run stories that are more light-hearted or, as some would call it, “good news.” But we do write hard — but, in my opinion, fair — articles when the Killeen City Council members act in a certain way or have conflicts of interest, etc. Some of the Killeen City Council members feel like I’ve been unfair to them, but I have not. They have always been given a chance to comment on any article I’ve written about them or even mentioned them in. When they don’t, it’s their choice not to. But my accountability reporting would not be possible without the backing of the Herald. Not all news outlets would offer that same support. And I hope that our readers can see the value in what we are trying to do. Because the truth is, unless you have a very strong diet for media consumption, most people won’t be able to tell good journalism from bad journalism. Part of that is poor education and part of that is just the uncertainty of the media climate, with people moving away from newspapers and more toward online. I think social media is a double-edged sword in this scenario. It both has the ability to have a democratizing effect on the media landscape, but at the same time it also has caused massive harm in spreading misinformation and disinformation throughout the world. Nobody has any clear ways to reckon with that at this time. One thing I will say though, to end this column on a more positive note, is that 99% of politics is local. What is going on in Washington, D.C., may not have a direct impact on you, but what happens at 101 N. College St. in Killeen could have a direct, everyday effect on you, possibly for years to come. So I will encourage those reading this to try to make your voices heard at the Killeen City Council meetings. And if you can’t go there in person, call and email your council member. They tend to change their behavior when they know people are watching them. In the meantime, I will be striving to continue reporting so that the people in authority will see something in the newspaper the next day that they don’t want to see. Syrian insurgents reach the capital's suburbs. Worried residents flee and stock up on suppliesAndrii Melnyk, a former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, believes Ukraine will get Taurus long-range missiles if the Christian Democratic Union wins early elections in Germany and CDU leader Friedrich Merz becomes chancellor. Source: Melnyk in an interview with Radio Liberty , as reported by European Pravda Details: Melnyk said that Merz, who is expected to become chancellor, has repeatedly spoken about the need to deploy Taurus missiles to Ukraine. Quote: "I cannot imagine in any scenario of this coalition, even if the Social Democrats become a ‘minor partner in it, that they will block it [the provision of missiles]," according to the diplomat. Merz's odds of replacing Social Democrat Olaf Scholz as Germany's chancellor are predicted at 99%. The remaining one percent Melnyk describes as "something unpredictable." "For this to happen, there should be some kind of a political earthquake, a super-scandal, which the Russians can easily ferment. Unfortunately, they are capable of this. Some form of scandal, which, for example, will result in image losses for the future Chancellor Merz, in order to prevent this from happening," Melnyk added. Germany is holding early elections on 23 February, but Ukraine will not be able to receive the Taurus missiles until the end of April, according to the diplomat. According to him, this is a positive circumstance. "Typically, coalition negotiations last at least two months. This is typical. Perhaps a little longer. That is, the current government will continue to discharge its obligations until that time... This suggests that nothing will likely happen in the next nearly six months. What will happen in six months, given what will happen in America, and so on, – I don't want to make baseless predictions today," the diplomat said. Background: Support UP or become our patron !

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Austin Seibert missed his second extra point of the game with 21 seconds left after Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin connected on an 86-yard touchdown, Dallas’ Juanyeh Thomas returned the ensuing onside kick attempt for a touchdown, and the Cowboys pulled out a 34-26 victory Sunday that extended the Commanders’ skid to three games. Seibert, who missed the previous two games with a right hip injury, was wide left on the point-after attempt following a low snap. Thomas then took the kick back 43 yards as the Cowboys (4-7) ended their losing streak at five in improbable fashion. Part of that was the play of backup Cooper Rush, who threw for 247 yards and two TDs in his third start in place of starter Dak Prescott. Part was also the defense forcing two turnovers, as Chauncey Golston ripped the ball out of Brian Robinson Jr.’s hands for what was called an interception of Daniels in the second quarter, and Donovan Wilson stripped John Bates midway through the fourth. KaVonte Turpin provided the fireworks with a spinning, 99-yard kickoff return TD seconds after Daniels found Zach Ertz in the end zone and scored on a 2-point conversion to cut the deficit to three with 3:02 left. In the final three minutes alone, the Commanders (7-5) scored 10 points and allowed Thomas' TD. All that after the score was 10-9 through three quarters before madness ensued. Washington's playoff hopes that looked solid not long ago are now in serious jeopardy after losing to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Dallas. Before the scoring outburst late, much of this defeat had to do with Daniels and the offense not being able to find any kind of a rhythm. The Cowboys did, despite playing without their two best offensive linemen, top cornerback and starting tight end. Rush's 6-yard pass to Jalen Tolbert was Dallas' first third-quarter TD of the season, and his 22-yarder to Luke Schoonmaker came after Wilson's forced fumble. Daniels finished 25 of 38 for 274 yards, including his second interception of the game on a failed Hail Mary as the clock expired. Rico Dowdle ran 19 times for 86 yards to spring the upset for the Cowboys, who were 10 1/2-point underdogs on BetMGM Sportsbook. Injuries Cowboys: LG Tyler Smith was inactive with ankle and knee injuries. ... RG Zack Martin (ankle), CB Trevon Diggs (groin/knee) and TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) were ruled out prior to game day and did not travel for the game. Commanders: RB Austin Ekeler was injured on a kickoff return in the final seconds. ... Robinson left with an ankle injury in the first half, returned and then left again. ... RT Andrew Wylie was concussed in the third quarter and did not return. ... C Tyler Biadasz was evaluated for a concussion in the fourth. ... CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) missed a third consecutive game since being acquired at the trade deadline from New Orleans. Up next Cowboys: Host the New York Giants on Thursday in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Commanders: Host the Tennessee Titans next Sunday in Washington’s final game before its late bye week. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
