Compare these results to last year’s report from International SOS, and you’ll notice a world grappling with many issues. According to International SOS, 65% of senior risk professionals believe risks have increased over the past year, with 69% predicting significant impacts from geopolitical challenges in 2025. Safest Places To Travel: Safest Countries So where should you travel in 2025 for peace of mind? As in previous years , Scandinavian countries top International SOS’s list of safest destinations, including Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Finland. These countries consistently rank high due to a combination of low crime rates, effective government policies and excellent emergency services. Island nations such as Cape Verde, the Seychelles and the Marshall Islands are also standout destinations for safety on International SOS’s Risk Map. Cape Verde—off the west coast of Africa—is celebrated for its political stability and low crime rates. The Seychelles combines a welcoming culture with a tranquil environment east of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The Marshall Islands offers a peaceful escape in a remote location in the central Pacific Ocean. Safest Places To Travel: Riskiest Countries At the other end of the spectrum are the countries where risk runs high. Countries like Libya and Afghanistan remain among the riskiest destinations due to ongoing conflict, weak governance and a lack of infrastructure to manage security threats. In sub-Saharan Africa, places like Somalia and the Central African Republic are characterized by instability, high crime rates and fragile governments. And the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains a stalemate, with neither side gaining ground. Several other places had increases in security risk ratings due to crime trends and increased social unrest. This includes South Africa, where the risk went from medium to high for the city of Johannesburg and eThekwini (which includes the city of Durban). In Mexico, growing cartel activity raised concerns for certain regions. Escalating social tensions in Kenya similarly led to increased risks. New Caledonia went from low to medium, based on impacts like social unrest, economic decline and related crime. And the Philippines, Thailand and Laos also had changes in risk ratings, due to reductions in militancy. International SOS didn’t decrease security risk ratings for any country in 2025. Safest Places To Travel: Medical Risks Access to quality healthcare is another big consideration for travelers. For 2025, International SOS’s list of lowest medical risk destinations includes countries like the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and much of Europe. These places benefit from healthcare infrastructure, access to essential medicines and reliable emergency services. Japan is one of the safest countries when it comes to medical risks. WASHINGTON (AP) — Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump’s return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Yet it was still a momentous finale to an unprecedented chapter in political and law enforcement history, as federal officials attempted to hold accountable a former president while he was simultaneously running for another term. Trump emerges indisputably victorious, having successfully delayed the investigations through legal maneuvers and then winning re-election despite indictments that described his actions as a threat to the country's constitutional foundations. “I persevered, against all odds, and WON," Trump exulted in a post on Truth Social, his social media website. He also said that “these cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought.” The outcome makes it clear that, when it comes to a president and criminal accusations, nothing supersedes the voters' own verdict. In court filings, Smith's team emphasized that the move to end their prosecutions was not a reflection of the merit of the cases but a recognition of the legal shield that surrounds any commander in chief. “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” prosecutors said in one of their filings. They wrote that Trump’s return to the White House “sets at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: on the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law.” In this situation, “the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated,” they concluded. Smith’s team said it was leaving intact charges against two co-defendants in the classified documents case — Trump valet Walt Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira — because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” Steven Cheung, Trump's incoming White House communications director, said Americans “want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country.” Trump has long described the investigations as politically motivated, and he has vowed to fire Smith as soon as he takes office in January. The election case brought last year was once seen as one of the most serious legal threats facing Trump as he tried to reclaim the White House. He was indicted for plotting to overturn his defeat to Joe Biden in 2020, an effort that climaxed with his supporters' violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. But the case quickly stalled amid legal fighting over Trump’s sweeping claims of immunity from prosecution for acts he took while in the White House. The U.S. Supreme Court in July ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, and sent the case back to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine which allegations in the indictment, if any, could proceed to trial. The case was just beginning to pick up steam again in the trial court in the weeks leading up to this year’s election. Smith’s team in October filed a lengthy brief laying out new evidence they planned to use against him at trial, accusing him of “resorting to crimes” in an increasingly desperate effort to overturn the will of voters after he lost to Biden. In asking for the election case to be dismissed, prosecutors requested that Chutkan do it “without prejudice,” raising the possibility that they could try to bring charges against Trump again after he leaves office. But such a move may be barred by the statute of limitations, and Trump may also try to pardon himself while in office. The separate case involving classified documents had been widely seen as legally clear cut, especially because the conduct in question occurred after Trump left the White House and lost the powers of the presidency. The indictment included dozens of felony counts accusing him of illegally hoarding classified records from his presidency at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and obstructing federal efforts to get them back. He has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. The case quickly became snarled by delays, with U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon slow to issue rulings — which favored Trump’s strategy of pushing off deadlines in all his criminal cases — while also entertaining defense motions and arguments that experts said other judges would have dispensed with without hearings. In May, she indefinitely canceled the trial date amid a series of unresolved legal issues before dismissing the case outright two months later. Smith’s team appealed the decision, but now has given up that effort. Trump faced two other state prosecutions while running for president. One them, a New York case involving hush money payments, resulted in a conviction on felony charges of falsifying business records. It was the first time a former president had been found guilty of a crime. The sentencing in that case is on hold as Trump's lawyers try to have the conviction dismissed before he takes office, arguing that letting the verdict stand will interfere with his presidential transition and duties. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office is fighting the dismissal but has indicated that it would be open to delaying sentencing until Trump leaves office. Bragg, a Democrat, has said the solution needs to balance the obligations of the presidency with “the sanctity of the jury verdict." Trump was also indicted in Georgia along with 18 others accused of participating in a sprawling scheme to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election there. Any trial appears unlikely there while Trump holds office. The prosecution already was on hold after an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Ludhiana: Punjab health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh inaugurated a new 30-bed government hospital in the Ludhiana North constituency on Friday. Initially, the hospital will operate with 10 beds, with plans to expand to a full 30-bed facility in the future. Required staff, including two medical officers, nurses and pharmacists, among others, have also been deputed. The building has been constructed at a cost of Rs 4.25 crore and will offer quality medical services to residents of nearby areas, including daily general OPD, emergency, dental, mother and child services, x-rays and basic lab tests. Dialysis services will also be started. The minister said that five health centres would be opened for people next year. As a Black woman, she just couldn’t see herself helping to replicate the largest act of resistance against then-President Donald Trump’s first term in January 2017. Even in an election this year where Trump questioned his opponent’s race , held rallies featuring racist insults and falsely claimed Black migrants in Ohio were eating residents’ pets , he didn’t just win a second term. He became the first Republican in two decades to clinch the popular vote, although by a small margin. “It’s like the people have spoken and this is what America looks like,” said Smith, the Los Angeles-based founder of the advocacy social media agency, Get Social. “And there’s not too much more fighting that you’re going to be able to do without losing your own sanity.” After Trump was declared the winner over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris , many politically engaged Black women said they were so dismayed by the outcome that they were reassessing — but not completely abandoning — their enthusiasm for electoral politics and movement organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency. Tyrese Hunter led Memphis with 26 points, tying a career high with seven 3-pointers, but Carter was the late star, saving Memphis by canning all six of his overtime free throws after Hurley’s late technical. Ball, whose 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in regulation capped a frantic UConn comeback attempt, finished with 10 points but fouled out in overtime, one of three Huskies who ended the game stuck to the pine. Tarris Reed Jr. , who set a new season high with 22 points, led UConn in scoring, while Alex Karaban ’s four 3-pointers were critical to the game even making it past regulation. When Hunter hit his seventh 3 with 8:35 left, putting Memphis up 10, it seemed like the Huskies would lose their first nonconference game since last season’s epic against Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse. But the Huskies never withered, with Karaban and Liam McNeeley ’s 3-point shooting pulling them back into it. Memphis, meanwhile, didn’t make a field goal over the final four minutes of regulation. And as if this game needed any more theatrics, the reason UConn got one last look to send the game to extra time? Because Memphis was called for a 10-second violation with 14.2 seconds left, setting up Ball’s big-time 3. In overtime, both teams traded baskets to start, but hoops eventually gave way to hysteria when Memphis bigs Moussa Cisse and Dain Dainja got into an altercation with UConn big Samson Johnson , bringing both benches to the brink of clearing. Even Hurley and Hardaway got involved, with Memphis assistant Nolan Smith trying to play peacemaker. Eventually Dainja and Samson were both assessed technical fouls, but it was Samson’s fifth, leaving UConn without a viable big man for the game’s final few minutes. Meanwhile, Memphis star PJ Haggerty — who finished with 22 points, 11 of which came at the free-throw line — had fouled out in the final 30 seconds of regulation trying to go for a game-sealing defensive rebound. (AP) — San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy took part in some light throwing on Monday after missing his first career game because of an injury and the 49ers are hoping he can return this week. Purdy hurt his throwing shoulder during a loss to Seattle on Nov. 17. Purdy underwent two MRIs last week that showed no structural damage. But Purdy he felt discomfort after making a few throws at practice on Thursday and was shut down for the game at Green Bay on Sunday that San Francisco lost 38-10 . Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Purdy made it through the session without pain and will rest on Tuesday and hopefully be able to return to practice on Wednesday as the Niners prepare to play at Buffalo this coming week. “We rested it throughout the weekend hoping that would help,” Shanahan said. “He threw lighter today to see if that rest helps and the rest did help him. So we’ll see again, going through the same things we did last week. We’re going to let him rest all the way up to Wednesday. We’ll see how it feels on Wednesday and then we’ll take the exact same course throughout the week. Hopefully it responds better this week than it did last week with the rest.” Brandon Allen went 17 for 29 for 199 yards with a touchdown, an interception and a lost fumble in his first start since the 2021 season. Allen would play once again if Purdy is unable to go on Sunday at Buffalo. Historians know that turkey and corn were part of the first Thanksgiving , when Wampanoag peoples shared a harvest meal with the pilgrims of Plymouth plantation in Massachusetts. And traditional Native American farming practices tell us that squash and beans likely were part of that 1621 dinner too. For centuries before Europeans reached North America, many Native Americans grew these foods together in one plot, along with the less familiar sunflower. They called the plants sisters to reflect how they thrived when they were cultivated together. Today three-quarters of Native Americans live off of reservations , mainly in urban areas. And nationwide, many Native American communities lack access to healthy food . As a scholar of Indigenous studies focusing on Native relationships with the land, I began to wonder why Native farming practices had declined and what benefits could emerge from bringing them back. To answer these questions, I am working with agronomist Marshall McDaniel , horticulturalist Ajay Nair , nutritionist Donna Winham and Native gardening projects in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Our research project, “Reuniting the Three Sisters,” explores what it means to be a responsible caretaker of the land from the perspective of peoples who have been balancing agricultural production with sustainability for hundreds of years. Historically, Native people throughout the Americas bred indigenous plant varieties specific to the growing conditions of their homelands. They selected seeds for many different traits, such as flavor, texture and color . Native growers knew that planting corn, beans, squash and sunflowers together produced mutual benefits. Corn stalks created a trellis for beans to climb, and beans’ twining vines secured the corn in high winds. They also certainly observed that corn and bean plants growing together tended to be healthier than when raised separately. Today we know the reason: Bacteria living on bean plant roots pull nitrogen – an essential plant nutrient – from the air and convert it to a form that both beans and corn can use . Squash plants contributed by shading the ground with their broad leaves, preventing weeds from growing and retaining water in the soil. Heritage squash varieties also had spines that discouraged deer and raccoons from visiting the garden for a snack. And sunflowers planted around the edges of the garden created a natural fence, protecting other plants from wind and animals and attracting pollinators. Interplanting these agricultural sisters produced bountiful harvests that sustained large Native communities and spurred fruitful trade economies . The first Europeans who reached the Americas were shocked at the abundant food crops they found. My research is exploring how, 200 years ago, Native American agriculturalists around the Great Lakes and along the Missouri and Red rivers fed fur traders with their diverse vegetable products. As Euro-Americans settled permanently on the most fertile North American lands and acquired seeds that Native growers had carefully bred, they imposed policies that made Native farming practices impossible . In 1830 President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act , which made it official U.S. policy to force Native peoples from their home locations, pushing them onto subpar lands. On reservations, U.S. government officials discouraged Native women from cultivating anything larger than small garden plots and pressured Native men to practice Euro-American style monoculture. Allotment policies assigned small plots to nuclear families, further limiting Native Americans’ access to land and preventing them from using communal farming practices. Native children were forced to attend boarding schools, where they had no opportunity to learn Native agriculture techniques or preservation and preparation of Indigenous foods . Instead they were forced to eat Western foods, turning their palates away from their traditional preferences. Taken together, these policies almost entirely eradicated three sisters agriculture from Native communities in the Midwest by the 1930s. Today Native people all over the U.S. are working diligently to reclaim Indigenous varieties of corn, beans, squash, sunflowers and other crops . This effort is important for many reasons. Improving Native people’s access to healthy, culturally appropriate foods will help lower rates of diabetes and obesity , which affect Native Americans at disproportionately high rates. Sharing traditional knowledge about agriculture is a way for elders to pass cultural information along to younger generations. Indigenous growing techniques also protect the lands that Native nations now inhabit, and can potentially benefit the wider ecosystems around them. But Native communities often lack access to resources such as farming equipment, soil testing, fertilizer and pest prevention techniques. This is what inspired Iowa State University’s Three Sisters Gardening Project. We work collaboratively with Native farmers at Tsyunhehkw , a community agriculture program, and the Ohelaku Corn Growers Co-Op on the Oneida reservation in Wisconsin; the Nebraska Indian College , which serves the Omaha and Santee Sioux in Nebraska; and Dream of Wild Health , a nonprofit organization that works to reconnect the Native American community in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, with traditional Native plants and their culinary, medicinal and spiritual uses. Our project also runs workshops on topics of interests to Native gardeners, encourages local soil health testing and grows rare seeds to rematriate them , or return them to their home communities. The monocropping industrial agricultural systems that produce much of the U.S. food supply harms the environment, rural communities and human health and safety in many ways . By growing corn, beans and squash in research plots, we are helping to quantify how intercropping benefits both plants and soil . By documenting limited nutritional offerings at reservation grocery stores , we are demonstrating the need for Indigenous gardens in Native communities. By interviewing Native growers and elders knowledgeable about foodways, we are illuminating how healing Indigenous gardening practices can be for Native communities and people – their bodies, minds and spirits. Our Native collaborators are benefiting from the project through rematriation of rare seeds grown in ISU plots, workshops on topics they select and the new relationships they are building with Native gardeners across the Midwest. As researchers, we are learning about what it means to work collaboratively and to conduct research that respects protocols our Native collaborators value, such as treating seeds, plants and soil in a culturally appropriate manner. By listening with humility, we are working to build a network where we can all learn from one another. A change is needed in the Canadiens' crease Here's the proposed solution. Why not call up goaltender Connor Hughes to see if he can be a solid NHL goalie? It could turn out to be an incredible discovery. I understand that management wants to protect Jakub Dobes, but Hughes is 28 years old, so there's no need to leave him in Laval for too long.
