Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players' association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. No further details on Carty's death were provided. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. It is a running style embodied by Eastern Kentucky University’s Joshua Carter. The powerful running back from Navarre, Fla., has been effective in getting to the end zone with that style. Carter’s path to success, however, has been far from a straight line, but rather a twisting and winding journey. Coming out of high school, Carter was actually recruited for his prowess in stopping running backs — as a linebacker. At Navarre High, he concluded his senior season (2018) with the school record for tackles, tackles-for-loss, sacks and forced fumbles. Carter also showed off his raw strength in the offseason claiming two state titles in weightlifting at the 219-pound division. “Weightlifting for me was just another thing I could compete in. That’s why I wanted to do it,” Carter said. “It helped maintaining strength and discipline, and that’s what I pride myself on. I want to be a strong and disciplined person and that’s how I approach football.” Despite the performances on and off the field, many schools overlooked Carter, leaving him to take a preferred walk-on spot at South Alabama. “I really didn’t have the measurables that most people look for in a linebacker,” said the 5-foot-9, 207 pound running back. “There aren’t many schools that are looking for anyone that’s my height, but I wanted to take the opportunity at South Alabama and make the most of it. I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge.” He took that challenge head on and earned a scholarship after playing in 10 games his freshman season of 2019. However, an ACL injury and change in coaching staff brought a new challenge to Carter. “Coming back from my ACL injury the coaches at South Alabama met with me and told me they were thinking about switching me to running back,” Carter said. That switch, while challenging, was nothing new to Carter, who comes from a proud family history of running backs. His father, Tony Carter, played running back at South Carolina State before later joining the military. His oldest brother, Dwayne, lettered as a running back at Harding (Ark.), and his other older brother, Michael, played four years at North Carolina before being drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. “Playing running back wasn’t new to me,” Carter said. “I had to knock the rust off because I had played the position a bit in high school, and obviously I knew a lot about it because of my family.” After taking a redshirt year in 2021, Carter entered the transfer portal as a running back in search for a place that would look not at his measurables, but the strength and discipline he had on and off the field. “Entering the portal was a shot in the dark because I didn’t have a lot of film as a running back,” Carter said. “It was difficult for me, personally, but I relied on the strength of my family and the strength they instilled in me like I always had. Both my parents were in the military, I’m a reflection of them ... and they always told me one decision can alter your life.” Carter made a life-altering decision between the 2021 and 2022 seasons, committing to EKU after he was invited on a visit by offensive coordinator and running backs coach Andy Richman. “When I came here, I really just liked what I saw from the start,” Carter said. “Richmond was a nice change of pace compared to where I grew up in Florida. It offered less distractions and really just fit my vibe as a person. I like how tight-knit everyone is here, but I can still have quiet time with myself to focus and reflect.” The grass was not immediately greener on the other side, though. Carter found himself at a relatively still new position, in an unfamiliar place, and in a room filled with talented running backs. So, it would be up to the Florida native to make his grass as green as he could. “I had to work my way up to get on the field when I got here,” said Carter. “There was not going to be a lot of reps just handed out. I had to work my way up to the field when I got here, but I know hard work pays off ... It’s that belief that I was raised on.” His hard work began to bear fruit last season as he tallied a career-best 714 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 120 rushing attempts. He also earned All-UAC recognition from FCS Football Central and Phil Steele. Now EKU’s No. 1 running back, Carter’s strength and discipline has led to success and celebration on the field. During the regular season, the redshirt senior racked up more than 1,100 yards rushing and also caught 20 passes for 181 yards. He has a team-best 13 rushing TDs on the season. And the running back is a big reason the Colonels (8-4, 6-2 UAC) won their final four games and got an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Carter had the game-winning touchdown for EKU in three-straight weeks, including in overtime on Nov. 16 at Austin Peay. Success and celebration has been hard-earned by the once overlooked and undersized linebacker who found his gap after patiently waiting, and now continues the Carter family legacy of running backs. The paradox of James Earl Carter was that during his single term of office as the 39th President of the United States he was widely regarded as a failure. But as an ex-President he was universally acclaimed as a huge success. After his crushing defeat by Ronald Reagan in 1980 Carter turned the tables in terms of his historical and personal reputation. Over the next 43 years he grew in stature. His record was re-evaluated. His reputation and status soared as he won the Nobel Peace Prize and became venerated as an outstanding pioneer in human rights, conflict resolution, and the eradication of severe diseases in Africa. Part of the problem was Carter's personality. To the public he was an enigma. He had no ability to make Americans feel good about themselves. None of these adjectives could be applied to the incumbent. At 56 he was too young to retire so he began working as a carpenter for Habitat for Humanity. This Christian organisation, based just down the road from Plains, built low cost housing for the poor and for those who lost their homes in natural disasters. The sight of a former President wielding a hammer to rebuild tenement blocks in New York City or shanty towns devastated by earthquakes in Haiti caused many Americans to re-assess Carter the private citizen. His humility, idealism and selflessness were admired, particularly after he opened the non-profit making Carter Centre in Atlanta with the objective of ameliorating suffering and disease. These ambitious goals were often achieved by Jimmy Carter in the decades after he left the White House. His medical programmes operated in 65 countries in the developing world. In Africa his campaign to eradicate the killer Guinea Worm disease was successful. His initiatives were also responsible for reducing Malaria, river blindness and Trachoma while at the same time improving nutrition among some of the worlds' poorest communities by ambitious agricultural developments. He was tenacious in his service to the underdogs of humanity. In the course of his global travels, Jimmy Carter became heavily involved in conflict resolution. He and his Centre developed an impressive record of helping to resolve conflicts in Haiti, Bosnia, Sudan, Uganda and other countries. In North Korea, Carter undertook a secret peace mission to Kim Il-sung which achieved a nuclear freeze in the region for several years. In 2002 the ex-President was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for advancing democracy, human rights and peaceful solutions in several of the world's most difficult countries. And I don't like to be away from Rosalynn for too long'. It was a reminder that the quintessence of Jimmy Carter was his commitment to faith and family values. A transparently good and decent man he did more to make the world a better place after losing the Presidency than he did while in office. It was a paradox that his achievements were greater when he was vulnerable than when he was powerful. Perhaps his strength was that he remained faithful to his Christian ideals at all stages, high and low, of his life's journey. He would not be disappointed with such an epitaph. Breyten Breytenbach, who died Sunday, was one of South Africa's most honoured writers, who found beauty in his Afrikaans language but was horrified at the white supremacy imposed by his government. The poet, author and painter had not lived in South Africa for decades, leaving in the early 1960s to settle in Paris, where he became a global voice against apartheid. What was intended to be a short and secret trip back in 1975 led to him spending seven years in jail, two in solitary confinement, after he was betrayed and arrested. French president Francois Mitterrand helped secure his release in 1982 and he returned to France to become a citizen. He travelled back to South Africa regularly, according to his daughter Daphnee Breytenbach, who confirmed his death to AFP. "My father, the South African painter and poet Breyten Breytenbach, died peacefully on Sunday, November 24, in Paris, at the age of 85," she said. "Immense artist, militant against apartheid, he fought for a better world until the end." Breytenbach was born in the small Western Cape town of Bonnievale in 1939 at a time when Afrikaans was emerging with a distinct identity as a language, having been derided as "kitchen Dutch". When in 1964 Breytenbach published his first volume of poetry -- "Die ysterkoei moet sweet", or The Iron Cow Must Sweat -- Afrikaans was not just ascendent but had given the name "apartheid" to South Africa's brutal system of racial segregation. With Afrikaners in power, their language became ever more associated with the regime. "I'd never reject Afrikaans as a language, but I reject it as part of the Afrikaner political identity. I no longer consider myself an Afrikaner," he said in an interview with The New York Times the following year. In his language and politics, Breytenbach pushed back against the strictures of the country in which he was born. He travelled around Europe in his early 20s, eventually settling in 1962 in Paris, where he met his wife, Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien, who was born in Vietnam and raised in France. She was refused a visa to visit South Africa in the late 1960s as she was considered "non-white" by the apartheid system. Breytenbach returned to the country in the early 1970s on a false passport to deliver money to the anti-apartheid struggle and meet white activists. But he was discovered and sentenced to nine years in prison, serving seven. Of his more than 50 books, most are in Afrikaans. His acclaimed 1984 prison memoir, "The True Confession of an Albino Terrorist", is in English. In the book, he recalls the horrors of hearing fellow inmates being hanged, often for political crimes. "Very often –- no, all the time really –- I relive those years of horror and corruption, and I try to imagine, as I did then with the heart an impediment to breathing, what it must be like to be executed. What it must be like to be. Executed," he wrote. His path crossed once, briefly, with another famous inmate. Nelson Mandela was for a time transferred from Robben Island to Pollsmoor prison in Cape Town, where Breytenbach was serving his time. The writer was tasked with preparing new prison clothes for the future president. Breytenbach eventually turned to painting to portray surreal human and animal figures, often in captivity, with his art displayed in Johannesburg, Brussels, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Paris. His literature gathered several prizes, including the international Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award (2017), the Mahmoud Darwish Literature Prize (2010) and the Van der Hoogt prize for Dutch literature (1972). "His poems are rich in metaphors and are a complex mixture of references to Buddhism, Afrikaans idiomatic speech, and memories of the South African landscape," according to the Hague-based Writers Unlimited foundation. For all his activism, when democracy arrived in 1994, the older and gray-bearded Breytenbach did not return to embrace the new South Africa. He wrestled with the failings of the democratic government, even with Mandela, despairing at what he called in Harpers magazine in 2008 the "seemingly never-ending parade of corrupt clowns in power at all levels". Beacon Lighting Group Ltd ( ) This ASX growth share claims to be Australia's leading retailer and trade supplier of lighting, ceiling fans, and electrical accessories. It has more than 120 Beacon Lighting stores, a wholesale division, and international sales offices in Hong Kong, Germany, and the US. A spelling error on a police report resulted in a man being convicted of a third DWI twice in less than a month – once in the 11th Judicial District Court and once in San Juan County Magistrate Court. District Judge Curtis Gurley accepted a Sept. 9 plea agreement from Rolando Benally, 43, of Rock Point, Arizona, who admitted to a third offense of DWI and was sentenced Sept. 19 to 364 days of probation. Benally was arrested again on Oct. 31 for DWI. The arresting officer reportedly entered his name as Rolondo Benally, which resulted in a records mix-up, according to Senior Trial Prosecutor Will Robinson. The same Benally was charged with a third DWI for a second time, and pleaded guilty to the charge, which is a misdemeanor, in San Juan County Magistrate Court. “He has six or seven arrests for DWI, how is it still a misdemeanor?” Gurley asked during a Nov. 25 hearing. “There is a new case, where he somehow pled to a misdemeanor, where he has already been convicted,” Gurley said. “I don’t understand what is going on.” The first case was a charge from June 14, when Benally was picked up at 10:47 p.m. near West Bloomfield Boulevard and Ruth Lane in Bloomfield. He was driving a black Dodge Challenger and failed to obey the traffic signals, according to the statement of probable cause. The arresting officer stated Benally’s speech was slurred and his eyes were “bloodshot” and “watery” and there was a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his vehicle,” court records state. He failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol count of .20 upon arrest. He was charged with a fourth DWI, which was pleaded down to a third, according to court records. This case was sent to District Court, and Gurley accepted the plea agreement. After being sentenced to probation, Benally violated his conditions of release by driving drunk again on Oct. 31. He was stopped at 10:07 a.m. driving a black Dodge Challenger in the area of County Roads 5500 and 5467. The arresting officer noted he was able to “smell a strong alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s side window,” according to the statement of probable cause. Benally failed the field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.24. Benally was allowed to enter a guilty plea in Magistrate Court, again admitting to a third DWI, a misdemeanor, that should have been a felony. He was sentenced to three years of supervised probation, according to court records. New ways to celebrate a New Year countdownTampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen has been a revelation this year. Coen, in his first year with the team, has done yeoman's work in turning one of the worst running teams in the NFL for years into one of the best in the league in 2024. How well has he done? He's managed to get the Bucs into the top 10 in the league in both rushing and passing offense. That's never been done before in Tampa Bay since the stats became trackable, per FOX Sports' Greg Auman. One thing Liam Coen has brought to the Bucs offense is a rare balance -- Tampa Bay is 10th in rushing yards per game, 10th in passing yards per game. NFL has rankings going back to 1990, and Bucs have never finished in the top 10 in both in same year in that range (likely never). Naturally - and unfortunately for Tampa Bay fans - that's meant Coen has gotten some rumblings throughout the year about being a potential head coaching candidate in the offseason. That didn't stop in the Wednesday column from NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, who included Coen among his list of coaches who could be getting head coaching looks soon. Pelissero had the following to say about Coen: A former UMass quarterback who still holds school passing records, Coen spent a season in the arena league before going into coaching, where his résumé in recent years has been unique. He had two stints each with the Rams (2018-20, 2022) and the University of Kentucky (2021, 2023) before replacing Panthers head coach Dave Canales as Tampa Bay's OC this past offseason. The Buccaneers' offense has improved statistically, ranking fifth in scoring (27.9 points per game) despite Tampa's ongoing four-game losing streak amidst injuries to its top receivers. Coen has the demeanor and personality for a head job. He may get a look. It's not just the fact that the team has been productive on the field - and they obviously have been. It's been how he's managed to keep dialing up plays and concepts despite losing both of his top wide receivers. Some coordinators might have been satisfied to jam his offense down the throats of whatever reserve players might be stepping in, and that approach sometimes doesn't work. Simply put, some guys can't do what others can, and that's especially the case with stars like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. However, the Bucs have strong talent elsewhere, particularly with budding star tight end Cade Otton and a room full of talented running backs. The calls made to get them involved in the passing game the last few weeks have been nothing short of genius. They've been effective to keep the offense going and scoring enough points to win some games that the Bucs have lost because of issues on the other side of the ball. Depending on how the 2024 season plays out, the Bucs could have a whale of a decision on their hands. Todd Bowles now has a losing record as a head coach with the Bucs despite the team winning the division the last two years. Coen will likely attract significant interest around the league. The Glazer family and general manager Jason Licht will have to decide if they have had enough of the status quo, or if they're ready to try to hand the reins to their franchise over to an innovative coach on the rise and keep him from leaving the building.
