Graduates of the Cambridge Shelter Corporation are getting a chance to make an income this winter, thanks to a program that just expanded. The social enterprise called In Our Backyard launched in May 2023. They’ve added winter services this year, giving more chances for the men staying at the shelter or shelter graduates to work. The community can hire them for things like junk removal, litter collection, winter pruning and some holiday decorating. They’re also making partnerships with local landscape companies to help provide snow removal and train the men on new skills. Executive Director of the Cambridge Shelter, known as The Bridges, Wayne Paddick, said they are trying to change the narrative around men experiencing homelessness. “These guys do want to work, they’re not part of what some people would stigmatize them as being lazy. For the most part, most of the guys here want to get out and be productive – this program has allowed that.” Paddick added that it’s all in an effort to try and keep them working over the winter. The idea to expand into the winter came after they saw the success of the program in the summer that helped employ over 40 men who graduated from the shelter previously. “It’s a safe environment for them to go back to work as opposed to going to an employer they don’t know who isn’t as understanding about their needs, about appointments, about some of the struggles they’ve had,” said Paddick. They hope to keep expanding the program further over the next few years, creating more meaningful partnerships to create more work. “We have struck a new relationship with Ontario Works, they are going to provide some funding for training for the guys so they can go off and get some specialized training so that when spring and summer comes, they have more skills to add,” Paddick added. “A lot of them want to comeback and give back and it’s a safe job for them to start with.” Paddick is hopeful for a second truck next year and more partnerships with landscape companies. The shelter in Cambridge is also looking for donations from the community as it gets colder out. They’re in need of winter clothing, toiletries and hand warmers.
