The Air Force has a mythical sky beast known as the Lockheed Martin U-2 Dragon Lady — a jet with such efficiency and performance that it's still being used since it was commissioned during the Cold War in 1955. But while the U-2 is designed for soaring through the sky at 400 mph with its 104-foot wingspan, it can't really land without being tamed. That's where U-2 chase cars come in. Inspired by the look of a sailplane, the U-2 is light enough to complete missions at a range of 3,000 miles and reach an altitude of 70,000 feet — even while carrying equipment. This made it the perfect asset for U.S. intelligence agencies. Pilot Maj. Richard Heyser used the U-2 to gather crucial information about Russia's plans to launch a nuclear strike against the U.S. in 1962. But its lightness comes at a price — the U-2 wingspan generates incredible lift that makes it tough to look down at the runway while descending. When combined with its unreliable landing gear, it's beyond dangerous to touch down. In fact, it's known as the most difficult-to-land machine in the U.S. Air Force. Since the U-2 flies down the runway at 140 mph, whoever provides the pilot with landing instructions needed to be just as fast. The idea of a chase car was conceived, with muscle cars racing behind a U-2 as it landed to call out instructions and then provide equipment to keep it upright after it lands. The driver operating the chase car must be just as qualified as the pilot is in the U-2 cockpit, able to give extremely critical and specific instructions all the way down the runway. Then there's the matter of the car itself — the Air Force wanted cars that had power and speed on straights, making the American muscle car the perfect choice throughout history. Two Ford Country Squire station wagons with supercharged engines were purchased as the initial chase cars, high on horsepower but iffy on control. Said one retired veteran to Classic Machines : "We were hot rod guys and took care of that easy enough." The idea was to use large cars to fit all of the necessary equipment but were still fast enough to keep up with the U-2 as it landed. A series of "souped up" El Caminos were next, packing massive engines that produced up to 450 hp. These cars were used for two decades, even driving under each wing to keep the U-2 plane steady. Up next was the CHP Fox Body Mustang after the California Highway Patrol approached the Air Force with the idea when it was in need of a new chase car ASAP. Lighter than the El Camino, the Mustang had an incredible top speed and was already equipped to run radios. After the 1980s passed, the Z28 Camero with the Police Package and a 5.7-liter V8 engine. In the 2000s, the Air Force turned to the Pontiac G8. Twenty were ordered but as they age, they are being replaced with Camaros, Dodge Chargers, Challengers , and even Teslas. The U-2 is getting older but it's still being used to survey dirt patterns, searching for mines and IEDs over Iraq and Afghanistan. While still effective, the U-2 is almost 70 years old at this point. With the U-2 possibly retiring soon, does that mean chase cars are also a thing of the past? As the U-2 reaches its end, the Air Force already is working with a new spy drone — the RQ-4A . Its top speed is 357 miles per hour and it has a wingspan of 130.9 feet. Just like the U-2, it seems like it doesn't have the best landing capabilities either. RQ-4A pilots already have started utilizing chase cars. It can't hurt to have extra eyes on the runway. It's still a mystery what cars will be used for this challenging job once the current ones are out of date. It could very well be a fleet of electric vehicles in the near future . Ryan Borgwardt began communicating with authorities Nov. 11, after they tracked him down, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said Thursday. The sheriff showed a video that Borgwardt sent police that day from an undisclosed location. The sheriff said no charges have been filed and that he doesn't think they will be necessary while authorities “keep pulling at his heartstrings” to come home. Here are some things to know about Borgwardt and his disappearance: Who is he? Borgwardt, who is in his mid-40s, lived with his wife and children in Watertown, a city of about 23,000 people northwest of Milwaukee that is known for its German heritage, parochial schools and two dams on the Rock River. When did he disappear? The sheriff has said his department was told Aug. 12 that Borgwardt had not been heard from since the previous day, when he traveled about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from home to Green Lake to go kayaking. Borgwardt’s wife said he texted her at 10:49 p.m. to say he was heading to shore. How was the search conducted? Deputies found Borgwardt’s vehicle and trailer near Green Lake. His kayak was discovered on the lake, overturned and with a life jacket attached to it, in an area where the water is about 200 feet (60 meters) deep. An angler later found Borgwardt’s fishing rod. The search for his body continued for more than 50 days, with divers scouring the lake on several occasions. How did authorities find Borgwardt? Clues — including that he reported his passport lost or stolen and obtained a new one a few months before he disappeared — led investigators to speculate that he made it appear that he had drowned to go meet a woman he had been communicating with in the Central Asian country of Uzbekistan. Podoll declined to comment when asked what he knew about the woman, but he said law enforcement contacted Borgwardt “through a female that spoke Russian.” His identity was confirmed through asking him questions that the sheriff said only Borgwardt would know and by a video he made and sent them Nov. 11. He has spoken with someone from the sheriff's department almost daily since. However Podoll said Thursday that Borgwardt's exact location in Eastern Europe was not known. Why are U.S. authorities struggling to pinpoint his location? Podoll said Chief Deputy Matt Vande Kolk has been the one communicating with Borgwardt and their conversations have all taken place via email. Vande Kolk told The Associated Press in an email Friday that authorities are trying to determine Borgwardt's exact location. But that might not be easy even with modern surveillance technology. Scott Shackelford, executive director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at Indiana University, said authorities should be able to locate Borgwardt through his device's internet protocol address, a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet. But he said it's very easy to mask an IP address and make it appear as if the device is in one country when it's really in another. Software exists that can route your IP address across the globe, Shackelford said. Police may not have the expertise, the manpower or any interest in digging through multiple layers of cyber deception, he said. What was in the video Borgwardt sent to law enforcement? Wearing an orange T-shirt, Borgwardt, unsmiling, looks directly at the camera, apparently filmed on a cellphone. Borgwardt says he is in his apartment and briefly pans the camera, but mostly shows a door and bare walls. “I’m safe and secure, no problem,” he says. How did he fake his death? Borgwardt has told authorities he overturned his kayak on the lake, dumped his phone in it and paddled an inflatable boat to shore. He told authorities he chose Green Lake because it is Wisconsin's deepest at 237 feet (over 72 meters). He then rode an electric bike stashed by a boat launch about 70 miles (110 kilometers) through the night to Madison, the sheriff said. From there, by Borgwardt's account, he traveled by bus to Detroit and then Canada, where he boarded a plane. Police are still verifying Borgwardt’s description of what happened, Podoll said. Why did he do it? Borgwardt faked his death and fled because of “personal matters,” thinking it was the right thing to do, the sheriff said. Investigators found that he took out a $375,000 life insurance policy in January for his family. “He was just going to try and make things better in his mind, and this was the way it was going to be,” Podoll said. What's next? Borgwardt has not yet decided to return home, and if he does it will be of his own free will, according to Podoll. Deputies are stressing to him the importance of returning home and cleaning up the mess he made. The sheriff suggested that Borgwardt could be charged with obstructing the investigation into his disappearance, but so far no counts have been filed. In 2011, we trapped a wild-born feral in our neighborhood, Sox. After getting her fixed and microchipped, we kept her in a half bath with a window for five months, spending time with her daily. It took years for her to trust us, but she eventually became a happy, content indoor cat, even bonding with two of our other cats. We moved across the country with Sox and four other pets, making stops to ensure they were comfortable. Sox remained cautious in our new home but eventually started exploring the house and stopped hiding. She would flop on her back, purr and show us just how happy she had become. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State coach Ryan Day attempted to offer an explanation for the post-game fight at Ohio Stadium. What happened? Michigan players tried to plant an "M" flag on the "Block O" after a stunning 13-10 victory against No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday. Several Buckeyes left the post-game tradition of singing "Carmen Ohio" to quite literally meet the Wolverines at midfield. Per the Ohio State Police, "multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan used pepper spray." Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games & will continue to investigate. "I don't know all the details of it, but I know these guys were looking to put a flag on our field and our guys were not going to let that happen," Day said. "We're embarrassed of the fact we lost, but there are some prideful guys on our team that weren't going to let that happen." The ugly scene marred the latest upset that will be etched into The Game rivalry lore, but it is a distraction from the main talking point. Michigan planted the same flag at Ohio Stadium two years after a 45-23 victory on Nov. 26, 2022, but that was a top-five team celebrating its first win in The Shoe since 2000. It was an imperfect balance with Will Howard – who was 19 of 33 for 175 yards, one TD and two costly interceptions. Jayden Fielding missed two field goals. "When we end up throwing 33 times out of 59 — more passes than runs — you can't just abandon the run.," Day said. "You have to be able to control the ball." "The turnovers, the rushing yards, you miss opportunities like those two field goals, yeah, it's going to cost you a game like this," he said. "Every yard matters. Every point matters." Michigan won the game. They planted a figurative flag at this point that the Buckeyes have not been able to tear down. In the end, Day will take the blame, and he accepted that afterward. "Everybody wants to win this game in the worst way, and nobody wants to win it more than we do," Day said. "It's our No. 1 goal every year. When you don't do that, that's disappointment and frustration." What's next for Ohio State? Now the challenge. Ohio State still is going to the College Football Playoff. The Big Ten championship is gone, but the chance to host a first-round home game is in the cards. The Buckeyes are good enough to win a national championship – but that will depend on the psyche of the team and the ability to block out the highly-toxic noise in Columbus about the failures against Michigan. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks climbed Thursday after market superstar Nvidia and another round of companies said they’re making even fatter profits than expected. The S&P 500 pulled 0.5% higher after flipping between gains and losses several times during the day. Banks, smaller companies and other areas of the stock market that tend to do best when the economy is strong helped lead the way, while bitcoin briefly broke above $99,000. Crude oil, meanwhile, continued to rise. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 461 points, or 1.1%, and the Nasdaq composite edged up by less than 0.1%. Nvidia rose just 0.5% after beating analysts’ estimates for profit and revenue yet again, but it was still the strongest force pulling the S&P 500 upward. It also gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that topped most analysts’ expectations due to voracious demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Its stock initially sank in afterhours trading Wednesday following the release of the results. Some investors said the market might have been looking for Nvidia’s revenue forecast to surpass expectations by even more. But its stock recovered in premarket trading Thursday, and Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said it was another “flawless” profit report provided by Nvidia and CEO Jensen Huang, whom Ives calls “the Godfather of AI.” The stock meandered through Thursday as well, dragging the S&P 500 and other indexes back and forth. How Nvidia’s stock performs has more impact than any other because it’s grown into Wall Street’s most valuable company at roughly $3.6 trillion. The frenzy around AI is sweeping up other stocks, and Snowflake jumped 32.7% after reporting stronger results for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The company, whose platform helps customers get a better view of all their silos of data and use AI, also reported stronger revenue growth than expected.
