Single tenure bill not solution to Nigeria’s challenges – Analyst'Heartbreaking': Why Belinda and many others were forced to shutter their businessJIM GOODWIN insists he wasn’t trying to get a rise out of Rangers boss Philippe Clement. Because EVERY team going to Ibrox tries to tap into their fans’ frustrations. 3 Jim Goodwin's men took a shock point from Ibrox Credit: Getty 3 Philippe Clement's side now sit 11 points behind Celtic Credit: PA The Dundee United manager made a big thing of telling his players to turn Rangers supporters against their side last weekend. Clement hit back saying the Irishman was doing his team talk for him. In the end it was Goodwin who came out of it better, with his side claiming a point to plunge Rangers under even more pressure. But the Tannadice gaffer maintains he wasn’t at the capers and simply stated the obvious. read more football stories SORE POINT Injury-jinxed Rangers star facing fresh sweat as he can't complete B team clash NICE OFFER Nice vs Rangers: Get £50 in free bets for Europa League on Thursday with Betfred He said: “I really wasn't trying to be clever - I just was stating the obvious. “I think it's something that managers say before every time they play Celtic or Rangers away from home . “We know the expectation that's on those two teams and we know that the fans can be quite fickle at times if things aren't going according to plan. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Philippe Clement and it wasn't a case of disrespecting anybody. I was offered Rangers job then they never called me “We try to frustrate Rangers, try and deny them space , and all of those things.” Goodwin also brushed off suggestions he engaged more shenanigans by delaying the already shunted back kick off time even further. United got stuck in traffic because of Storm Bert so their starting time was shifted to 3.45pm. But after sitting on their team bus for hours and suffering a disrupted prep, Goodwin’s team stayed out warming up for ten minutes longer. Ex-United boss Ian McCall, who was on media duties at the game, speculated they did that because they really wanted a 4pm start. But Goodwin has explained that they only warmed up for so long to ensure their players were properly ready to play. He said: “We were very honest about the situation and there was no hiding from the fact the weather conditions were terrible all over the country. “We normally leave Tannadice about 10am but we brought the time forward to 9.30am. 3 “We were expecting traffic but we didn't anticipate the fact that there was going to be accidents on the road that were going to actually shut down the major routes. “So instead of our bus being able to go towards Perth , it then had to go through Edinburgh . “Then the Queensferry Crossing was closed as well, which then obviously created even more traffic on the other road. “So we couldn't really do a great deal else. “I know people talk about not staying over and stuff like that. “We don't tend to stay over for these games because it is a little over an hour on the bus, I don't think it’s worthy of a night in the hotel. “We do that for Ross County when we go up the Dingwall, but I can assure everybody there was nothing sinister in anything that happened." Despite the delays, United still went for their usual pre-match meal in an attempt to prepare as normally as possible. And Goodwin reckons people saying they should have just trotted off the bus straight into a big game are not being serious. He said: “The players had to have a pre-match. They'd been sat on a bus from 9.30am “I think there were certain people saying we should just go straight to the stadium and just play the game on an empty stomach and things like that, which is just ridiculous. “These things happen. “Unfortunately, we weren't ready for quarter to four and I think the game kicked off around about ten to. “We'd done everything we could to get ready for the game. “It's not just a case of running off the bus, sticking on your strip and away you go out and play. “We've got player welfare as well that we have to consider. “The players need to get warm in order to try and avoid injury . “Some of them have got strappings that they need to get from the medical team. So, all of these things add up. “I remember Rangers last season. “They stayed overnight in St. Andrews for a game at Dundee, half an hour away. “They got stuck on the bridge and it got put back an hour. “So these things can happen to every team. It's just unfortunate. “If people think that's an advantage for us, then, lads sitting on a bus for four hours it certainly is not an advantage. “The Rangers players would have been sitting in comfort in Ibrox in the players' lounge or in the dressing room or whatever. “There wouldn’t have been a team in the country that has had to prepare for the game the way that we did at the weekend.
