While there are ongoing pressures across the system all year, more people become sicker, for longer, over the winter months, particularly those in our older population. Last month, the announced a series of initiatives in a 2024/25 Winter Preparedness Plan as officials warned that they will not eliminate winter pressures on the Health and Social Care (HSC) system but will help to alleviate their impact. They include additional funding for GP and residential care homes, phone first services for all NI health trusts and vaccination programmes. Announcing the measures, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said there's no doubt that the HSC system is again facing a very difficult winter period. Ahead of another highly challenging season for , people are being urged to familiarise themselves with health services ahead of increased pressure on hospitals at this time of year. We spoke to Dr Ursula Mason, a GP based in and Chair of the Royal College of GPs NI, about planning for this busy time of year and how people can best look after themselves to ease pressure on the system by accessing the right service at the right time. Dr Mason told : "I think anyone working in the health service always views winter with a bit of trepidation. We have a very challenging situation at the best of times in Northern Ireland from the perspective of our health service. "When you add on the additional winter pressures that inevitably come every year, it does put the whole system under a huge amount of pressure and we see that really acutely at the coalface here in general practice." An extra £3.4million is being made available to help GP services meet additional winter demand as Dr Mason explained: "What the extra funding does is it creates a little bit of space and a little bit of extra resource to add in additional surgeries and additional sessions in GP practices up and down the country. "There are a couple of issues with that. Number one not all practices can utilise the funding because they can't necessarily always access additional help and support from GPs because there are fewer GPs around. "It's sometimes hard to get locum GPs into areas where it's hard to recruit so that can be a challenge for some practices. "And of course, there's always a huge issue with access anyway so the amount of money that is provided every year to GPs, while it's welcome, it really is a drop in the ocean when it comes down to the need that's out there in the community. "While we welcome it and utilise it, we could absolutely do with more funding if it were available this time of the year." Dr Mason says the demand for appointments does escalate at this time of year: "There's no doubt about it when you see sort of the winter viruses that are starting to take hold at the moment and also just general ill health. "We've got lots and lots of people who require our services every day of the week, whether they've got something acute or whether it's a chronic long term condition. "We have a huge demand, which we try to meet as best we can, like every other practice up and down the country but we know that the capacity in general practice is not sufficient to meet the demand that's out there in our communities." leaders have already sounded the alarm over a “quad-demic” of disease, saying the service is “busier than ever” for this time of year, amid rising cases of flu, , norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. At the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony, Setsuko Thurlow, a 92-year-old atomic bomb survivor living in Canada, delivered a speech on behalf of ICAN. Hearing the loud applause that filled the hall, I felt really positive and thought, “Our desire [to eliminate nuclear weapons] is understood around the world.” ICAN was recognized for its efforts to help establish the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted at the United Nations in 2017. The treaty completely bans the development and testing of nuclear weapons, among other things. In 2008, the nongovernmental organization Peace Boat, of which I am coleader, began a project to travel around the world with atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki to share their testimonies about their experiences. I felt that the hibakusha atomic bomb survivors were able to share their feelings with the international community, as more than 170 hibakusha interacted with heads of state from various countries, as well as with U.N. officials. We also worked with Nihon Hidankyo to promote international petitions, and after all our hard work, we were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The award has raised ICAN’s profile to unprecedented levels. Before we received the award, we had to start by explaining what ICAN is. But now, people immediately know that ICAN is an organization that worked hard to establish the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The number of volunteers has increased significantly, so it’s much easier for us to carry out our activities. I think many people now know the name Nihon Hidankyo after it won the Nobel Peace Prize. The average age of hibakusha is now well over 85, and many are not as physically fit as they once were. In this sense, the award to Nihon Hidankyo was long overdue. In particular, I would like the younger generation to be keenly aware of the fact that they are the last generation to be able to directly hear the voices of the atomic bomb survivors. We must not burden hibakusha with their mission any longer. LOS ANGELES — Considering how their seasons have ebbed and flowed so far, and the history between the stars leading their teams, it’s only appropriate that the Lakers and Golden State Warriors match up for a Christmas Day showdown on Wednesday at Chase Center. Just a month ago, the Lakers and Warriors were sitting near the top of the Western Conference standings, opening the season with 10-5 and 12-3 records, respectively, entering Nov. 23. How much a month can change things. The Lakers (16-13) have gone 6-8 since then after dropping Monday’s home game to the Detroit Pistons to end their three-game winning streak. And the Warriors (15-13) have been even worse, winning just three of their last 13 games after starting the year at the top of the conference. But Wednesday will be another matchup between Lakers star LeBron James and Warriors star Steph Curry – two all-time greats whose careers have intersected to the point they’re considered by many to have one of the defining rivalries of the league’s modern era. “Anytime you get an opportunity to be on the court and compete versus one of the greats to ever play this game, you never take it for granted,” James said. “I don’t know how many more opportunities we’re gonna get to go against each other, so it’s always fun.” Wednesday will also mark the second time the Lakers and Warriors have played each other on Christmas in the past seven years, with the Lakers beating the Warriors on Dec. 25, 2018, in James’ first season with the Lakers. (Bloomberg) -- Although Canada faces a major trade war with the US as soon as President-elect Donald Trump enters office in less than a month, Justin Trudeau has been distracted by a leadership crisis that could topple him as prime minister. The situation has Canada’s regional leaders hopping on flights to influence the incoming Trump administration themselves. For Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai, that led to chewing the fat with the president-elect’s eldest son, Donald J. Trump Jr., over meals of black bear spring rolls, turkey, deer and oysters at a hunting lodge in North Carolina. Don Jr., as he’s often called, has frequented the Yukon for hunting trips, a passion Pillai shares. And the Trumps have ties to the region. More than a century ago, Donald Trump Sr.’s grandfather Friedrich Trump capitalized on the Yukon gold rush with a restaurant, bar and brothel in a remote town close to the northern territory’s border. “I made sure that I brought him, Don, some clothing, because I wanted to remind him that the Trump family businesses were Yukon-built,” Pillai said by phone. The two first met at a conference in Nevada a few months prior. Pillai said the conversations were “incredibly positive” and an opportunity to “share some data points” and argue that the US-Canada trading deficit that stokes the president-elect’s ire “is only because we’re sending raw materials to them, and they’re creating jobs and value from that.” They also discussed the Yukon’s efforts on Arctic security and “opportunities to secure supply chains inside of North America.” Some of those projects are already happening. South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol was banned Monday from travelling abroad, the justice ministry said, less than a week after he plunged the country into chaos by briefly imposing martial law. Yoon sent special forces and helicopters to parliament on the night of December 3 before lawmakers forced him to rescind the order by rejecting his decree. The unpopular leader narrowly survived an impeachment motion in parliament Saturday even as huge crowds braved freezing temperatures to call for his ouster. Despite remaining in office, a clutch of investigations has been closing in on Yoon and his close allies, including a probe for alleged insurrection. The ministry of justice confirmed on Monday that Yoon had become the first sitting South Korean president to be banned from leaving the country. A lawmaker was asked at a Monday parliamentary hearing whether Yoon had been banned from international travel. "Yes, that's right," replied Bae Sang-up, an immigration services commissioner at the ministry. Also under travel bans for their roles in last week's events are former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun -- currently in detention -- and ex-interior minister Lee Sang-min. General Park An-su, the officer in charge of the martial law operation, and defence counterintelligence commander Yeo In-hyung are also barred from leaving South Korea. Investigators hauled Park in for further questioning Monday, and Yonhap news agency reported that prosecutors had asked for a warrant for Kim's formal arrest. The impeachment push failed to pass after members of Yoon's own People Power Party (PPP) walked out of parliament, depriving it of the necessary two-thirds majority. South Korea's ally the United States indicated it would still deal with Yoon but said it "will keep lines of communication open with all relevant parties". "President Yoon is the president of Korea, and the political process in Korea will play out, as it should, under Korea's laws and Korea's constitution," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters. "If there are issues with the president, there are ways laid out in the constitution such as suspending the president from his duties, and then move on to proceedings set out in the constitution, such as impeachment," he said.
