Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state on Friday, described the late governor of the state, Rotimi Akeredolu, as a courageous leader who spoke the truth to power and fought for the advancement of democracy and the rule of law. Aiyedatiwa who stated this during the maiden edition of the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series held at the International Culture and Events Centre (The Dome), in Akure, said Akeredolu’s leadership was marked by integrity, transparency, and a deep understanding of the needs of the people if the state. The governor led the state in honouring the legacies of his predecessor, late Akeredolu, during a lecture with the theme: ‘Security Sector Reform in Promoting Peace, Stability, and Development: The Ondo State Example.’ Aiyedatiwa who disclosed that the day was filled with mixed feelings, said: “today, we gather on the threshold of history, with mixed feelings, in commemoration of the first anniversary of the glorious but painful exit of our leader and mentor, the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu. “On that unforgettable day, 27th December 2023, mountains moved and the earth shook at the loss of the icon and courageous statesman who emptied himself in service to our dear Sunshine State and humanity. “Arakunrin Akeredolu was that courageous leader who spoke truth to power and fought for the advancement of democracy and the Rule of Law. His leadership was marked by integrity, transparency, and a deep understanding of the needs of our people. “He fought gallantly alongside his colleague governors in the Southwest to establish the Amotekun Corps, a home-grown security outfit that has become a reference point in Nigeria.” He commended the late governor’s impacts on the state’s fortunes through landmark achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development. “His administration’s achievements remain profound—roads, bridges, health centers, and education reforms that continue to inspire us. ‘Akeredolu’s legacy of progress is evident everywhere, and his passion for the security of lives and property has made Ondo State one of the safest and most peaceful in Nigeria,” Aiyedatiwa stated. Aiyedatiwa reiterated his commitment to continue with Akeredolu’s vision of development and good governance. “On my inauguration as constitutional successor, I made a solemn commitment to carry on his mantle of leadership. This is not just a promise; it is a sacred duty. “We have since mobilised contractors back to sites to complete abandoned projects, commenced new road constructions, and implemented impactful policies such as the N73,000 new minimum wage for workers. “We have also paid salaries and pensions up to date while providing financial assistance to our students,” he said. Highlighting his administration’s efforts to sustain Akeredolu’s legacy, Aiyedatiwa pointed out the strides made in agriculture, security, and infrastructure. “The construction of rural and urban roads, investments in agriculture, and prioritization of security through Amotekun are proof of our unwavering commitment. “We continue to work tirelessly to address the challenges facing our state and build upon the foundation laid by our late governor,” he added. The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of the event’s chairman, Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa, and the guest speaker, Chief Femi Falana, SAN. He said: “We were very intentional about the choice of these two great men. Chief Femi Falana was a close ally of the late governor, sharing a strong bond as a friend and colleague. “Bashorun Arogbofa, an elder statesman, has seen it all and continues to inspire us with his advocacy for a better Ondo State. Their presence enriches this momentous occasion.” The event had renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, SAN, as the keynote speaker. In his address, Falana extolled Akeredolu’s courage and commitment to justice, recounting how he challenged institutional failings during his lifetime. Falana said, “Akeredolu was a very courageous man. Even before judges, he was not afraid to call out wrongdoings. He was instrumental to the development of the people, whether as a student leader or as a governor. “His boldness in establishing the Amotekun Corps, even when it meant defying the Federal Government, is proof of his determination to protect his people.” Falana noted that Akeredolu’s establishment of Amotekun has made Ondo State a reference point in security matters across Nigeria. “Today, all 36 state governors have come together to approve state police, but it was Akeredolu who laid the groundwork by enacting the law that legitimised Amotekun. “That singular action has made Ondo State the most peaceful state in Nigeria,” he said. Falana, however, lamented the prevailing insecurity in the country and blamed recent stampede tragedies on the failure of the police. “The deaths of 115 Nigerians in the recent incidents in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija are unacceptable. The police failed to protect the people, and I hold them responsible. “The government must pay compensation to the families who lost their loved ones because of these failures,” he stated. He emphasised the need for holistic reforms to tackle insecurity, pointing out that poverty and unemployment are major drivers of crime. Falana also offered practical suggestions for economic growth in Ondo State, urging the government to harness its agricultural potential. He called for the reorganization of the state’s education system to prioritize technical and vocational training. On healthcare, he stressed the importance of functional social security systems. Falana highlighted the importance of preserving Akeredolu’s legacy, saying: “The greatest tribute to Akeredolu is the sustainability of his legacy. (The Center Square) – Christians helped push President-elect Donald Trump across the finish line on Election Day, a survey found. Trump received the majority of the Christian vote, while Vice President Kamala Harris received the majority of the non-Christian vote. This is according to a report from the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University, which surveyed 2,000 voting-age adults nationally. The election was a historic comeback for Republicans on many fronts, with Trump being the first Republican to win the popular vote vote in over two decades. Among self-identified Christians, Trump also received 56% of their votes, compared to the 60% Harris received from non-Christians. Yet, because the majority of voters still identify as Christians, Trump had a larger share of the vote. “Although Harris won a larger share of the non-Christian vote than Trump’s share of the Christian votes, Christians outnumbered non-Christian voters by more than a 5 to 2 margin – delivering the decisive Nov. 5 victory to President Trump,” the report said. “Not only did most of Trump’s votes come from Christians, but they gave him a 17 million vote cushion over Harris, which proved to be an insurmountable lead.” Christians represented 72% of the voters who turned out. The report also found that Catholics had record-high turnout, despite overall voter and Christian voter turnout being well below what it was in 2020. While voter turnout was lower than 2020 in most of the Christian subgroups polled, 70% of Catholics reported voting compared to 2020’s 67%. Voters with a “biblical worldview” also voted at a higher percentage, up to 67% in 2024 from 2020’s 64%. Just days before the election, Trump predicted that Harris would struggle with the Catholic vote on Election Day. “Kamala Harris has finally lost the Catholic vote,” he said on social media on Oct. 25. “Her and the Democrats persecution of the Catholic Church is unprecedented! Her poll numbers have dropped like a rock, both with Catholics, and otherwise.” While many politicos expressed concerns that Trump’s moderate pro-life stance would disenfranchise Christian and anti-abortion voters, it seems to have much less of an impact than expected. In fact, Trump pointed to Harris’ abortion stance as pushing Catholics toward voting for him. “Kamala is demanding late-term abortion, in months seven, eight, and nine, and even execution after birth, and people aren’t buying it – and they never will,” the former president said . The report found that 20% of Christians selected abortion as the most-consequential issue this election, with inflation (38%) and immigration (34%) receiving even higher percentages. Yet, potentially even more impactful on the election than the increase in the Catholic vote was the significant drop in non-Christian turnout, even higher than those reported in Christian subgroups. The report found that adults “associated with a faith other than Christianity” and “adults who have no religious faith” had a massive drop in turnout from 2020, dropping 12% and 9% respectively. With both of these groups historically supporting Democratic candidates, this cratering in support likely had a significant impact on Harris’ chances of winning. George Barna, who serves as the director of research at the Cultural Research Center and led the survey, said Trump’s boost with Christians was just too much for Harris. “Americans forget that two-thirds of adults in this nation consider themselves to be Christians,” Barna said . “Donald Trump, for all of his perceived and ridiculed faults, did a better job than did Kamala Harris of representing hallowed Christian characteristics such as the importance and support of family, the rule of law, limited government authority, financial responsibility, and the like.”

Seize the dayBears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was neither spectacular nor victorious last week against the Packers, but his steady performance was tremendously reassuring after watching him in freefall for three games in a row. Pulling out of that spiral was crucial as Williams tries to get his career off the ground and eventually lead the Bears to something better than what they’ve been stuck in the last several seasons. Completing 74.2% of his passes, totaling 301 yards passing and rushing and posting a 95.0 passer rating in a loss was hardly parade-worthy, but it reestablished his footing . That’s how virtually everyone around him saw it, anyway. Williams, though, downplayed it in terms of being a confidence boost. “I wouldn’t say it did anything for me mentally,” he said. “After the third game, I realized that I can play and I feel good playing. Regardless of the interceptions at the beginning of the season, I was seeing the field well, and that still stands today. “There’s going to be rough times, rough patches over the long, healthy career that I hopefully have, and that’s not going to change my mindset.” For everyone else, it was a relief. In order to make games like the one against the Packers unremarkable, Williams must stack up more like it — and better ones. He gets that. Every time he has made progress, he has been very measured in his perspective about that being merely a starting point. The whole season is that, really, especially after the Bears plunged out of the playoff race with four consecutive losses. The most important thing, by far, about the last seven games is Williams setting his trajectory for 2025 and beyond. The first half of the season, loaded with most of the Bears’ weaker opponents, was NFL 101. The advanced classes are in the second half, and none are tougher to pass than what he’ll encounter Sunday at home against the Vikings. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores is a dizzying opponent known for dialing up the most covert and confusing blitzes in the league. Williams will get two shots at the Vikings, first Sunday and then Dec. 16 in Minneapolis. The Bears’ chances of winning either game hinge on how quickly he catches on to Flores. It’s also a huge part of his big-picture development, and coach Matt Eberflus said this is “a great game” for Williams — with the help of new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown — to demonstrate his ability to adapt from play-to-play “just because of the variation that you get” from Flores in defensive fronts and personnel.
