There’s no such thing as a fairytale in brutal, brilliant world of sport – ask Pep Guardiola & imploding Man City giantsOfficials in Pennsylvania say more women have come forward to accuse a man they met on dating sites of drugging and raping them. Andrew Gallo, 40, is charged with 10 counts of rape by causing impairment, 12 counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, eight counts of strangulation, five counts of selling or furnishing liquor or malt or brewed beverage to minors, and one count of corruption of minors, according to a Nov. 25 news release from the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office. Attorney information for Gallo was not available. In September, prosecutors announced charges against Gallo related to six victims who had accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting them , according to a Sept. 11 news release. Since then, six more women have come forward to say he drugged them, and five of the women said he also raped them, according to officials. Gallo met them on multiple dating websites, including Sugardaddymeet.com, officials said. He went by the username DREWSTER420 and one victim said he also used the name KAE, according to the news release. After meeting online, Gallo would have them come to his home for a date. That’s where officials said he drugged them by putting methamphetamine and other drugs in their drinks. “The victims described feeling strange and ‘out of it’ almost immediately after having his drinks. The five rape victims reported engaging in rough sex with Gallo, with four of them describing him putting his hands around their throat to the point of them passing out or almost passing out,” officials said. The women told officials the drugs made them hallucinate and made it hard for them to sleep. Most of the women needed medical attention afterward, according to prosecutors. “Detectives reviewed their lab tests, which showed they had methamphetamines or amphetamines in their system. Before his arrest, investigators served a search warrant at Gallo’s home, recovering a bottle of tequila that tested positive for methamphetamine,” officials said. Evidence also showed that Gallo searched “pornography involving drugged women” online, according to the release. The women ranged in age from 18 to 35 and were assaulted between June 2018 and June 2024, officials said. The first group of victims were between the ages of 17 and 30. “The victims in this case are so courageous,” District Attorney Jennifer Schorn said at a September news conference. “They came forward to report crimes that quite frankly predators like this assume the victims won’t have the strength to do so and I commend them for their strength and courage.”Cabinet has endorsed the iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) (Amendment) Regulations 2024. Hopes for a Santa Claus rally on Wall Street fell Friday as tech stocks slid lower, while a weaker yen lifted Japanese equities. US indices slid lower at the opening bell, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite losing two percent during morning trading. Shares in Tesla were down over three percent in late morning trading while those in AI chipmaker NVIDIA shed around two percent. Wall Street stocks have historically performed well around the year-end holidays in what is popularly known as a Santa Claus rally. A Christmas Eve jump in equities got the Santa rally off to a flying start and indices barely budged in Thursday trading. Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare also pointed to an increase in 10-year US Treasury bond yields to around 4.6 percent, which he noted is an increase of nearly 0.9 percentage points since the US Federal Reserve made its first interest rate cut in September. "The Fed doesn't hold sway over longer-dated maturities like it does over shorter-dated securities, so the bump in rates at the back end of the curve is being watched with an anxious eye as a possible harbinger of a pickup in inflation and/or the budget deficit," O'Hare said. Wall Street stocks took a knock earlier this month when the Fed indicated it would likely cut interest rates less than it had previously expected to. That was in part because of uncertainty tied to the stated intention of incoming president Donald Trump to raise tariffs, which could boost inflation that is already proving sticky. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei index closed up nearly two percent, with the yen's recent weakness proving a boon for major exporters. The yen hit 158.08 per US dollar on Thursday evening -- its lowest in almost six months -- following comments made by Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda that failed to give a clear signal on a possible interest rate increase next month. Recent data has showed Japan's inflation rose for a second month in December, while industrial production declined less than expected in November and retail sales came in higher than estimated last month. Japan's government also on Friday approved a record budget for the next fiscal year, ramping up spending on social welfare for its ageing population and on defence to tackle regional threats. In Seoul, the stock market closed down one percent after the won plunged to a nearly 16-year low of 1,487.03 against the dollar on Friday morning. South Korea is struggling to emerge from political turbulence in the wake of President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration this month, which prompted his impeachment. Acting President Han Duck-soo was also impeached Friday in a vote that prompted governing party lawmakers to protest with angry chants and raised fists. South Korea's business outlook for January fell in the Bank of Korea's composite sentiment index, the biggest month-on-month slide since April 2020, according to data based on almost 3,300 firms released Friday. In Europe, Frankfurt's DAX index rose after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved parliament on Friday and confirmed the expected date for the early general election, emphasising the need for "political stability" in Europe's largest economy. Shanghai Port became the first in the world to see the annual container throughput exceed 50 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) on Sunday. The port has ranked first globally for 14 consecutive years in terms of annual container throughput. According to Yang Yanbin, deputy general manager of the production and business department of the Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG), the growth of container throughput indicates that China’s complete industrial system and manufacturing capability continue to empower global trade. Seen as a window of China’s opening up and collaboration with the world as well as an engine boosting trade and exchanges, Shanghai Port saw its annual container throughput top 1 million in 1994. Yang noted that the growth in container throughput at Shanghai Port was driven not only by the rise in export-heavy containers but also by an increase in international transfer containers and ship-to-ship transfer volumes. “The port’s robust functionality and high-quality services attract large cargo ships from around the world,” he said, adding that the proportion of ship-to-ship transfers at the port is expected to reach a record 60 percent in 2024, which highlights the continued enhancement of Shanghai Port’s role as a global hub. At present, the Shanghai Port boasts nearly 350 international ship routes reaching more than 700 ports in over 200 countries and regions around the world. The development of Shanghai Port reflects the broader transformation of Shanghai as a whole. The eastern Chinese metropolis has once again secured third place in the 2024 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index Report, demonstrating that its status as an international shipping center of great significance has been continuously consolidated. According to Shanghai Customs, the daily import and export value of goods handled by Shanghai Port averages 29.8 billion yuan (about $4 billion), about 1.24 billion yuan per hour. In recent years the application of science and technology has greatly improved the efficiency of terminal operations. In 2017, the Yangshan phase IV automated terminal became operational, helping Shanghai Port surpass the 40 million TEU container throughput milestone that year. With a 70 percent reduction in workforce, the terminal’s overall efficiency increased by 30 percent, while per capita labor productivity reached 213 percent of that at a traditional terminal. “The ITOS intelligent control system is China’s first successful effort to break the foreign monopoly on port software technology,” said Huang Heng, general manager of the Nezha Intelligent Technology Company with SIPG, noting that these smart ports not only play a key role in advancing China’s shipping industry but also draw interest from foreign ports looking to collaborate. The Chancay port in Peru is a prime example, where Chinese technologies have helped establish South America’s first intelligent port and create a new land-sea transport corridor between Latin America and Asia. Shanghai Port is also actively pursuing a green transformation. Since last year, it has signed agreements with the ports of Los Angeles and Hamburg to jointly develop green shipping corridors. In April, the Shanghai Port successfully completed its first ship-to-ship synchronous green methanol fueling operation for large container ships. Luo Wenbin, general manager of SIPG energy, noted that the next step would be to transform Shanghai Port into a “green energy fueling center.” “By 2030, we aim to achieve the ‘double 100’ goal, with liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling capacity reaching one million cubic meters and green methanol and biofuels fueling capacity reaching one million tonnes,” he said.
