While the update can be installed on devices as old as the iPhone XR and iPhone XS , the software includes a variety of features that only work on iPhone 15 Pro , iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 range. Apple Intelligence makes it possible to use generative AI software for things such as text editing, proofreading, summarization , as well as tone adjustment, among other things. These features are available system-wide through a dedicated Writing Tools framework on iOS, iPadOS , and macOS , with iOS 18.2 bringing even more AI-powered functionality to the table. The software expands upon the existing capabilities of Writing Tools, originally introduced with iOS 18.1 . The Camera Control is an entirely new hardware component, a button with a capacitive surface and a force sensor. The button can be used in conjunction with Apple Intelligence through an entirely new feature known as Visual Intelligence. Visual Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 models running iOS 18.2. With Visual Intelligence, users can click and hold the Camera Control button while aiming their iPhone 16 at an object or location of interest. This will, in turn, provide users with useful information via Apple's generative AI software. For instance, users can point their devices towards a restaurant and receive details about the location's ratings or working hours. In the same way, it's also possible to add a calendar event from a flyer or identify a dog by breed. Additional Camera Control settings for iPhone 16 users There are also new settings related to the Camera Control and its functions in iOS 18.2. Users can now adjust the double-click speed for Camera Control. Apart from the Default option, the double-click speed can be set to Slow or Slower . iOS 18.2 introduces additional settings for the Camera Control on iPhone 16. The software update adds a new AE/AF Lock option as well, which locks the exposure and focus when taking a photo. The Camera Control can be configured to toggle AE/AF Lock with a light press. This means that the exposure stays consistent and that the image won't darken, even when the iPhone is moved around. Apple has added a new customization option that lets you open the Camera app even if your screen is off. Located in Settings > Display and Brightness , there's now an option titled Require Screen On , which is enabled by default. Disabling this option lets you activate the Camera app via Camera Control even if the device's display is currently off. Apple's Image Playground is a new system-wide AI-powered image generation tool iOS 18.2 introduces Image Playground , which is an entirely new system application that lets users create images through artificial intelligence. Image Playground uses AI to generate images at the user's request. In the Image Playground app, users can write a description of the image they want to see and have generative AI create it. This can be an image of a person they know, a landscape, an object, or anything in between. The software does have guardrails in place, though, so it's not able to create images of copyrighted characters or inappropriate content. Images can be created in one of two styles: animation and illustration. The content created within Image Playground is not hyper-realistic by any means. Apple has also made sure that all images generated with the app are labeled as such so that they could never be mistaken for real-world photographs. Image Playground can generate images of people the user knows. Image Playground allows you to generate images with a resolution of 1024 by 1024. They are saved locally and can be shared like any other photo on your iPhone, iPad , or Mac . A similar feature, known as Image Wand, lets users create images based on text found within the Notes app. Typed or handwritten text can be turned into an image through artificial intelligence. Image Playground features integration with system applications such as Freeform, Keynote, Messages, and Pages, as well as with third-party apps. With it, users can create so-called Genmojis along with other types of images. Create custom 'Genmoji' with Apple Intelligence on iOS 18.2 With iOS 18.2, users can create unique emojis straight from the iOS keyboard. When an AirTag or other item is lost, users can opt to share the location of the item with a trusted individual or even an airline, all so that the lost item can be more easily recovered. The link recipient will be able to see the AirTag's location, serial number, and the user's Apple Account email or phone number for a limited amount of time. Hearing Health features for AirPods Pro 2 now available in more countries iOS 18.2 also expands the availability of Hearing Health features for the AirPods Pro 2 wireless earbuds. Specifically, the Hearing Test feature is now available in Cyprus, Czechia, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. The clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature, meanwhile, was made available in the United Arab Emirates. Hearing Health features for AirPods Pro 2 are now available in additional countries. Other changes in the iOS 18.2 update The operating system also introduces a minor change to video playback in the Photos application. Videos are no longer automatically zoomed in as soon as playback begins. The in-app tab bar has been made customizable, and now items from the sidebar can be added to it. While the Apple Vision Pro was always usable as an external display for Mac, there are now two new display modes: Ultrawide and Wide. According to Apple, the new Ultrawide setting is the equivalent of connecting two 4K monitors to a Mac and using them side-by-side. visionOS 2.2 introduces improvements to the Mac Virtual Display feature. Apple also made it possible to view multiple sports games at once on the Apple Vision Pro. With visionOS 2.2, users can now view up to 5 MLB or MLS games simultaneously through their Apple TV+ subscription. While it's not currently possible to view other sports, Apple has added SharePlay integration with visionOS 2.2, letting users of the headset watch games together. On the Apple Watch , watchOS 11.2 introduces a new pause button for the Camera Remote application. This means that it's now possible to pause videos being recorded on an iPhone via the Camera Remote app on an Apple Watch, through a new button located on the left side of the screen. The Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch platforms still lack Apple Intelligence, though, meaning that their users won't be able to take advantage of the various AI features available on other Apple platforms. SEOUL - South Korea’s finance minister says fears the nation will slide into a recession in 2025 are “excessive”, as he played down the view that this week’s bungled martial law decree will have a lasting impact on the economy or markets. “Recent emergency measures were quickly lifted in accordance with the constitution and the law, so I think the impact on the market was very limited,” Mr Choi Sang-mok said in an exclusive interview with Bloomberg on Dec 5. Mr Choi also discounted the idea that investors will look to avoid South Korea going forward due to the political instability, while insisting the government will continue to push ahead with efforts to revise legislation to make sure companies give shareholders more consideration. The finance minister’s comments build on repeated reassurances from government and central bank officials that President Yoon Suk Yeol’s shock attempt to take direct political control will not damage the economy or investors’ confidence in South Korea. Still, doubts remain about the ability of Mr Yoon’s administration to restore faith in the political process and to move forward with any major policy initiatives when he faces an impeachment vote, gridlock in Parliament and opposition from within his own party. The domestic political crisis comes at a sensitive time for South Korea with authorities bracing for US President-elect Donald Trump’s second term and his vow to slap tariffs on trading partners. That has made export-reliant countries such as South Korea vulnerable to protectionism. A Bloomberg survey conducted after Mr Yoon’s move showed economists see a 33 per cent chance of recession in South Korea in the next 12 months. Mr Choi disagrees. He cited International Monetary Fund and Bank of Korea forecasts for 2025 showing growth at or near the economy’s potential level. The central bank sees growth of 1.9 per cent in 2025, a figure it lowered out of concern over the potential impact of protectionist policies on global trade. Only 18 per cent of those surveyed said they would revise their growth forecasts due to the current political turmoil. “Foreign investors’ investment in Korea is affected by fundamentals of the nation’s economy,” Mr Choi said. “Because the country’s system is working well, the impact of the non-economic-related situation on the Korean economy has been very limited and well managed.” Mr Choi reiterated that the government will act swiftly if volatility in financial market rises. He avoided mentioning specific levels for the currency. The finance minister already promised on Dec 4 to use all available measures to stabilize financial and foreign-exchange markets if needed, with “unlimited liquidity” on the table. The political upheaval has also raised concerns about the government’s ability to push through its so-called corporate value-up plan to tackle the nation’s low stock valuations. “Recently there have been some cases where shareholder protection has become an issue,” Mr Choi said. “Therefore the most important thing is to revise the capital market act to make effective improvements to these areas.” Proposed changes to the act would beef up M&A rules to better protect shareholders while limiting the requirements to listed firms to avoid burdening smaller businesses. Now, figuring out how to finally enforce it is key to a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal approved by Israel on Tuesday. In late September, after nearly a year of low-level clashes, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah spiraled into all-out war and an Israeli ground invasion. As Israeli jets pound deep inside Lebanon and Hezbollah fires rockets deeper into northern Israel, U.N. and diplomatic officials again turned to the 2006 resolution in a bid to end the conflict. Years of deeply divided politics and regionwide geopolitical hostilities have halted substantial progress on its implementation, yet the international community believes Resolution 1701 is still the brightest prospect for long-term stability between Israel and Lebanon. Almost two decades after the last war between Israel and Hezbollah, the United States led shuttle diplomacy efforts between Lebanon and Israel to agree on a ceasefire proposal that renewed commitment to the resolution, this time with an implementation plan to try to bring the document back to life. What is UNSC Resolution 1701? In 2000, Israel withdrew its forces from most of southern Lebanon along a U.N.-demarcated “Blue Line” that separated the two countries and the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, which most of the world considers occupied Syrian territory. U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, increased their presence along the line of withdrawal. Resolution 1701 was supposed to complete Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and ensure Hezbollah would move north of the Litani River, keeping the area exclusively under the Lebanese military and U.N. peacekeepers. Up to 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers would help to maintain calm, return displaced Lebanese and secure the area alongside the Lebanese military. The goal was long-term security, with land borders eventually demarcated to resolve territorial disputes. The resolution also reaffirmed previous ones that call for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon — Hezbollah among them. “It was made for a certain situation and context,” Elias Hanna, a retired Lebanese army general, told The Associated Press. “But as time goes on, the essence of the resolution begins to hollow.” Has Resolution 1701 been implemented? For years, Lebanon and Israel blamed each other for countless violations along the tense frontier. Israel said Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force and growing arsenal remained, and accused the group of using a local environmental organization to spy on troops. Lebanon complained about Israeli military jets and naval ships entering Lebanese territory even when there was no active conflict. “You had a role of the UNIFIL that slowly eroded like any other peacekeeping with time that has no clear mandate,” said Joseph Bahout, the director of the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy at the American University of Beirut. “They don’t have permission to inspect the area without coordinating with the Lebanese army.” UNIFIL for years has urged Israel to withdraw from some territory north of the frontier, but to no avail. Hezbollah’s power, meanwhile, has grown, both in its arsenal and as a political influence in the Lebanese state. It has an estimated 150,000 rockets and missiles, including precision-guided missiles pointed at Israel, and has introduced drones into its arsenal. Israel's security Cabinet approved the ceasefire agreement late Tuesday, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The ceasefire is set to take hold at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday. Efforts led by the U.S. and France for the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah underscored that they still view the resolution as key. For almost a year, Washington has promoted various versions of a deal that would gradually lead to its full implementation. International mediators hope that by boosting financial support for the Lebanese army — which was not a party in the Israel-Hezbollah war — Lebanon can deploy some 6,000 additional troops south of the Litani River to help enforce the resolution. Under the deal, an international monitoring committee headed by the United States would oversee implementation to ensure that Hezbollah and Israel’s withdrawals take place. It is not entirely clear how the committee would work or how potential violations would be reported and dealt with. The circumstances now are far more complicated than in 2006. Some are still skeptical of the resolution's viability given that the political realities and balance of power both regionally and within Lebanon have dramatically changed since then. “You’re tying 1701 with a hundred things,” Bahout said. “A resolution is the reflection of a balance of power and political context.” Now with the ceasefire in place, the hope is that Israel and Lebanon can begin negotiations to demarcate their land border and settle disputes over several points along the Blue Line for long-term security after decades of conflict and tension.The states that saw the most active attacks against election certification two years ago certified the results of this year’s races without controversy this week, prompting the Arizona secretary of state to proclaim that “election denialism” is a thing of the past. Others said they weren’t so sure. Certification proceeded normally this year in part because Donald Trump won the presidential race, quieting his supporters after he had spent the campaign making unsubstantiated claims that he could lose only through widespread cheating . The statewide certification votes Tuesday in Nevada and New Mexico follow a vote Monday to certify the results in Arizona. In all three states, the certification process was tumultuous during the 2022 midterms when Democrats won most statewide offices. Those controversies followed attempts by Trump and his allies to halt or challenge certification in Michigan, Georgia and other battleground states in 2020, disrupting what until then had been a routine administrative process. This year, some who have been the most vocal in questioning the integrity of elections have instead been celebrating Trump’s victory. “The results are being accepted in the manner that they are, in part, because those who have been eroding trust or casting doubt on the integrity of U.S. elections have a result they feel good about,” said David Levine, a former local election official in Idaho who now advises on election administration issues. “Hopefully we can get back to a place where Americans can feel confident in the results even if it’s one they disagree with.” On Tuesday, Nevada and New Mexico certified their statewide results with little discussion. During Monday’s certification in Arizona, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes reflected on the lack of controversy this year. “I think the age of election denialism, for all intents and purposes, is dead,” he said. Sitting next to Fontes, state Attorney General Kris Mayes, a fellow Democrat, said she was more skeptical. Her Republican opponent in 2022 spent two years challenging his loss . “Do I think election denialism is dead? No, I don’t,” she said. “We’ll see over the next couple of election cycles what happens, but I don’t think we’re there yet.” Public confidence in elections has dropped since Trump challenged his loss in 2020 and made false claims of widespread fraud, particularly among Republicans . Some Republicans began targeting the certification process, when local and state boards certify the results after local election officials provide them with the final tally of votes. A firestorm erupted in Georgia over the summer when the state election board, with a new pro-Trump majority, attempted to politicize the certification process with changes later blocked by the courts. While certification battles did not surface after the Nov. 5 election , a vocal segment within the Republican Party remains deeply skeptical of election processes, particularly of the availability of mail ballots and the use of ballot scanners to tally votes. During a forum Monday on the social platform X led by the group Cause of America, the group's director expressed doubt about voting equipment. Shawn Smith, who also is a retired Air Force colonel, argued the certification process suppresses legitimate concerns and goes against “the sovereignty of the people.” Story continues below video Although not as widespread as four years ago, this sentiment did surface sporadically at the local level this month. In Washoe County, Nevada, which includes Reno and voted narrowly for Vice President Kamala Harris, the vote to certify the results was 3-1 with one abstention. Commissioner Jeanne Herman has consistently voted against certification and did not make a public comment about her vote this year. Commissioner Mike Clark, a staunch Trump supporter who had also previously voted against certification, said he would abstain and left before the vote. “I am not an election denier and clearly the person I wanted to win, won this state,” Clark said before leaving the meeting. “However, that does not mean that all the protocols were followed and that we can truly certify the election.” Such skepticism, whether in Nevada or elsewhere, leaves the door open to certification disputes during future elections. The questioning of election results isn't limited to Republicans. Even though Harris quickly conceded after losing all seven presidential battleground states , online posts among her supporters continue to raise concerns about her loss. One Reddit community that has amassed 23,000 members features a steady drumbeat of Democrats scrutinizing a result they can’t believe is real. Some posting in the group have issued calls to contact Harris and her running mate to ask them to demand a recount or otherwise object to the outcome. Among the battlegrounds, Michigan was among those where Trump and his allies pressed to halt certification of the 2020 election for Democrat Joe Biden amid false claims of fraud and manipulation. Two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers who initially opposed certification eventually relented. The state board of canvassers eventually voted to certify, even after one Republican member abstained. This year, the state board voted unanimously on Nov. 22 in favor of certifying and praised the state’s election workers. In Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger certified his state’s results on Nov. 22. Four years ago, the Republican state official was facing immense pressure from Trump and his allies to investigate their unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Also certifying results Tuesday, and doing so unanimously, was the state Board of Elections in North Carolina.
