A visionary’s mission of nation building It is instructive to consider how Quaid’s statements and path he chose resonate in today’s Pakistan This birthday of the Quaid-i-Azam, more than ever before, beckons us to reflect on his dynamic personality and statesmanship. At this point in time, the nation is grappling with myriad challenges in both the political and social domains. As the public feels dejected and demoralised on many fronts, the Quaid, once again, can lead us toward the goal of a prosperous country. Different aspects of the Quaid’s personality-particularly as a leader who united the Muslims of India toward nationhood and then spearheaded the independence movement that culminated in the creation of a new Muslim state-are worth a closer study. It is instructive to consider how the Quaid’s statements and the path he chose resonate in today’s Pakistan. His struggle as the leader of the Muslim League, particularly in confronting the uncompromising attitudes of both Congress and the British, is seen as part of history. However, his messages are often lost in the fog of political expediency and rhetoric. In the past, these were telecast on television more as a ritual and showcased at national events. The strength and significance of the Quaid’s thoughts can be highlighted by the speeches he delivered in the year following independence. Despite his frail health, he toured the country and spoke to a wide cross-section of the public, including businessmen, armed forces personnel, and minorities, addressing various national concerns and interests. The Quaid’s speech at a rally at University Stadium, Lahore, in October 1947, offers an interesting case study. It reflects his vision for nation-building and his caliber as the leader of a new country. To quote the Quaid: “All I require of you now is that every one of us to whom this message reaches must vow to himself and be prepared to sacrifice his all, if necessary, in building up Pakistan as a bulwark of Islam, and as one of the greatest nations whose ideal is peace within and peace without.” These words clearly indicate what the Quaid wanted from the Pakistanis and the role he envisioned in nation-building. He also pointed toward a harmonious society built on peace, both internally and externally. There is much to be read between the lines. Phrases like “prepared to sacrifice,” “building up Pakistan,” “bulwark of Islam,” and “peace within and peace without” stand out as key themes. Later, he said, “Remember that the scrupulous maintenance and enforcement of law and order are the prerequisites of all progress.” While law and order was not a pressing issue at that time, yet the Quaid seemed to be looking far ahead, anticipating a time when law and order would become a significant challenge for the state. The Quaid’s speech also pointed to the civil and political rights of citizens. He said, “The tenets of Islam enjoin every Muslim to give protection to his neighbours and the minorities, regardless of caste and creed.” Here, the Quaid seemed to be foreseeing a time when minorities would face discrimination and problems from the public and their neighbours. He was also referring to the teachings of Islam about neighbours and minorities. The essence of the Quaid’s thoughts highlights the dangers he foresaw in the years ahead-related to law and order, as well as the treatment of minorities. His statements have clear and deep messages for a multiracial, multicultural nation, coming just two months after independence. It was a call for sacrifice, for building a great nation based on justice and tolerance. Having passed through many periods of chaos and turmoil, the nation is now trying to adjust to a stable political order. However, the message seems to have lost significance over time. The prevailing national scene presents a picture that starkly contrasts with what the Quaid had envisioned-attacks on polio teams, dacoit activity in the Kacha area, massive land scams, corruption, and a rising crime wave targeting women and children are all challenging the writ of the state. Questions are being raised about the credibility of the judicial process. In politics, the country is experiencing a polarisation never seen before. Institutions like Parliament have not been able to check the slide toward chaos that seems to have become the new normal. This is not how the Quaid envisaged Pakistan. One reason for the social disharmony and political malaise is that the Quaid’s guidance and instructions have been relegated to history. An important lesson from the Quaid’s role after Independence is how he engaged the nation—the stakeholders. Despite failing health, he held meetings with representatives of minorities, the armed forces, bureaucrats, students, businessmen, besides the politicians, all who had a role in nation building and to whom the Quaid had assigned a role. It is this sense of ‘leadership’ that is missing today, to take all stakeholders on board, and address the challenges. The Quaid’s birthday reminds us of myriad aspects of his personality, particularly his role during the Independence movement. The short time he had after Independence exposes his role as head of a new state, and his role in building up the nation, in the face of daunting challenges. Ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, a new report by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS ( UNAIDS ) highlights the critical role of human rights in ending the AIDS pandemic as a public health threat by 2030. Titled “ Take the rights path to end AIDS, ” the report outlines how stigma, discrimination, and punitive laws hinder progress in the fight against HIV. Despite significant advancements in HIV treatment and prevention, human rights violations continue to block access to essential services. In 2023, 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses, and 1.3 million people acquired HIV. The human rights challenge Marginalised communities, including women, girls, and LGBTQ+ individuals (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and others), remain disproportionately affected. Sub-Saharan Africa illustrates this disparity starkly: every day, 570 young women aged 15 to 24 acquire HIV, a rate three times higher than their male peers. Globally, 9.3 million people living with HIV are not receiving life-saving treatment. “Discrimination and violence against girls must be tackled as a human rights and health emergency,” said Nomonde Ngema, a 21-year-old HIV activist. Criminalisation obstructs progress Punitive laws targeting marginalised communities exacerbate the crisis. In 2023, 63 countries still criminalised same-sex relationships. HIV prevalence among gay men and other men who have sex with men is five times higher in these countries than in those where such laws do not exist. “Punitive laws and policies keep vulnerable people away from the help they need to prevent HIV, test for HIV, and treat HIV,” said Axel Bautista, Community Engagement Manager at MPact Global Action for Gay Men’s Health & Rights. “Instead of punishing marginalized communities, governments need to uphold their human rights,” he emphasised. HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans didn’t need to see what Baltimore’s Derrick Henry is doing this season to be reminded of just how dangerous he can be. He ran all over the Texans for years while playing in the AFC South for the Tennessee Titans. Henry and the Ravens (10-5) visit AFC South champion Houston (9-6) on Wednesday, looking for a win to keep their AFC North title chances alive. Baltimore has clinched a playoff berth for a third straight season but needs wins in its last two games and one loss by the Steelers to capture the division. Henry, who ranks second in the NFL with 1,636 yards rushing, has had some of his greatest success against the Texans. Four of the 30-year-old’s six career 200-yard rushing games have been against Houston, including a career-high 250 in the season finale in the 2020 season to surpass 2,000 yards. “You talk about fast, explosive, physical — he’s looking probably the best he’s looked in his career,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s found that fountain of youth ... he’s a great player. Jurors are considering whether to convict Shannon Stillwell and Deamonte Kendrick, who raps as Yak Gotti, on gang, murder, drug and gun charges. The original indictment charged 28 people with conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Opening statements in the trial for six of those defendants happened a year ago . Four of them, including Young Thug, pleaded guilty last month. The rapper was freed on probation. Stillwell and Kendrick rejected plea deals after more than a week of negotiations, and their lawyers chose not to present evidence or witnesses. Both seemed to be in good spirits Tuesday morning after closings wrapped the previous night. Kendrick was chatting and laughing with Stillwell and his lawyers before the jury arrived for instructions. The jury started deliberating Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed at 5 p.m. Jurors are expected to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. If they don’t reach a verdict by 3 p.m. Wednesday, the judge will send them home for the Thanksgiving weekend and they will return Monday morning. Kendrick and Stillwell were charged in the 2015 killing of Donovan Thomas Jr., also known as “Big Nut,” in an Atlanta barbershop. Prosecutors painted Stillwell and Kendrick as members of a violent street gang called Young Slime Life, or YSL, co-founded in 2012 by Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. During closings on Monday, they pointed to tattoos, song lyrics and social media posts they said proved members, including Stillwell, admitted to killing people in rival gangs. Prosecutors say Thomas was in a rival gang. Stillwell was also charged in the 2022 killing of Shymel Drinks, which prosecutors said was in retaliation for the killing of two YSL associates days earlier. Defense attorneys Doug Weinstein and Max Schardt said the state presented unreliable witnesses, weak evidence and cherry-picked lyrics and social media posts to push a false narrative about Stillwell, Kendrick and the members of YSL. Schardt, Stillwell's attorney, reminded the jury that alleged YSL affiliates said during the trial that they had lied to police. Law enforcement played a “sick game” by promising they would escape long prison sentences if they said what police wanted them to say, Schardt said. He theorized that one of those witnesses could have killed Thomas. The truth is that their clients were just trying to escape poverty through music, Schardt said. “As a whole, we know the struggles that these communities have had,” Schardt said. “A sad, tacit acceptance that it’s either rap, prison or death.” Young Thug’s record label is also known as YSL, an acronym of Young Stoner Life. Kendrick was featured on two popular songs from the label’s compilation album Slime Language 2, “Take It to Trial" and “Slatty," which prosecutors presented as evidence in the trial. Weinstein, Kendrick’s defense attorney, said during closings it was wrong for prosecutors to target the defendants for their music and lyrics. Prosecutor Simone Hylton disagreed, and said surveillance footage and phone evidence supported her case. “They have the audacity to think they can just brag about killing somebody and nobody’s gonna hold them accountable,” Hylton said. The trial had more than its fair share of delays. Jury selection took nearly 10 months , and Stillwell was stabbed last year at the Fulton County jail, which paused trial proceedings. Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over after Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville was removed from the case in July because he had a meeting with prosecutors and a state witness without defense attorneys present. Whitaker often lost patience with prosecutors over moves such as not sharing evidence with defense attorneys, once accusing them of “poor lawyering.” But the trial sped up under her watch. In October, four defendants, including Young Thug , pleaded guilty, with the rapper entering a non-negotiated or “blind” plea, meaning he didn't have a deal worked out with prosecutors. Nine people charged in the indictment, including rapper Gunna , accepted plea deals before the trial began. Charges against 12 others are pending. The Kings have signed 20-year-old forward Nicholas Papineau to spice up the offence. Papineau, a five-foot-10, 160-pound native of Ottawa from Gatineau, Que., had nine goals and 26 points in 21 games this season in the Central Canadian Hockey League with the Nepean Raiders. In 124 games over the past 2 1⁄2 seasons with the Raiders he scored 35 goals and had 40 assists for 75 points. “Nicolas is a veteran player who was the captain of his team,” said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes. “He possesses great speed and good offensive abilities. We’re excited to have him. He’s a great addition to our group.” The Spruce Kings have averaged just three goals per game this season and their offence ranks fifth-worst in the 21-team BC Hockey League. News of Papineau’s signing comes day after the Kings fired head coach Alex Evin, after eight seasons with the team. Evin, 37, was with the Spruce Kings for 7 1⁄2 seasons. He served two years as associate coach, helping the Kings win their first BCHL championship in 2019, and took on the head coaching job the following season. Associate coach Brad Tesink takes on the role as interim head coach. HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans didn’t need to see what Baltimore’s Derrick Henry is doing this season to be reminded of just how dangerous he can be. He ran all over the Texans for years while playing in the AFC South for the Tennessee Titans. Henry and the Ravens (10-5) visit AFC South champion Houston (9-6) on Wednesday, looking for a win to keep their AFC North title chances alive. Baltimore has clinched a playoff berth for a third straight season but needs wins in its last two games and one loss by the Steelers to capture the division. Henry, who ranks second in the NFL with 1,636 yards rushing, has had some of his greatest success against the Texans. Four of the 30-year-old’s six career 200-yard rushing games have been against Houston, including a career-high 250 in the season finale in the 2020 season to surpass 2,000 yards. “You talk about fast, explosive, physical — he’s looking probably the best he’s looked in his career,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “He’s found that fountain of youth ... he’s a great player. It’s fun to see guys rebound and bounce back the way that he’s done this year.” Dealing with Henry along with all the challenges that quarterback Lamar Jackson presents makes the top-ranked Ravens one of Houston’s more difficult matchups. “You talk about MVP, (Jackson’s) definitely the MVP in my mind just for what he’s doing not only in the run game but also throwing the football,” Ryans said. “The accuracy, the decision-making, like, he’s playing unbelievable ball right now, so it’s going to be a really tough challenge for us this week.” Another challenge for the Texans is moving on after Tank Dell sustained a season-ending knee injury in Saturday’s loss to Kansas City. His injury is another blow to a receiving group that already was without star Stefon Diggs, who tore his ACL in Week 8. “The position we’re in, it’s not a lot of times where you can sulk in your feelings for very long,” quarterback C.J. Stroud said. “You’ve got to just keep rolling. I think that’s a testament to just life in general. Everybody has stuff on their plate. Everybody is going through something. And just because we’re in this position, doesn’t mean you get to feel sorry for yourself.” Houston will rely on Stroud to keep the passing game rolling despite the loss of Dell, who ranks second on the team with 667 yards receiving. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh has been impressed with Stroud’s growth in Year 2 and knows that dealing with him will be difficult for his team, which ranks 31st in the NFL by allowing 254.9 yards passing a game. “He’s just a supertalented guy... he’s surrounded with some good weapons, and he gets the ball out quick,” Harbaugh said. “He handles pressure well, he can move, he’s athletic, scrambles and makes plays.” Missing out Jackson is a big fan of Beyoncé, though he didn’t know the title of his favorite song of hers, saying it was “To the left,” which is just the first lines of her hit “Irreplaceable.” And he doesn’t think playing in Wednesday’s game should stop him from seeing her halftime show on Christmas . “I’m going to go out there and watch,” he said. “First time seeing Beyoncé perform, and it’s at our game — that’s dope. I’m going to go out and watch. Sorry Harbaugh, sorry fellas." He later clarified that he was kidding about sneaking out at halftime to get a glimpse of Queen Bey. “I was just thinking about just seeing Beyoncé for the first time,” he said. “Not saying it like that; no disrespect, because I know how people can take things. Next question.” Metchie’s moment Houston receiver John Metchie could have a chance for a big game with Dell out. Metchie is playing in his second NFL season after missing his entire rookie year while undergoing cancer treatment. He has just 182 yards receiving this season, with his best game coming against Detroit, when he had a career-high 72 yards receiving and his only NFL TD. Stroud is looking for Metchie and fellow reserve Xavier Hutchinson to help make up for Dell’s absence against the Ravens. “Those guys have another opportunity to show who they are and I know that they can do it,” Stroud said. “I see them in practice do it every week. So, I’m excited for them and it’s a good opportunity for them to step up.” Record watch Jackson is up to 6,023 yards rushing for his career. The NFL record for a quarterback is 6,109 by Michael Vick, so Jackson could break it with a big game on Wednesday. Jackson also leads the NFL in passer rating and is in the conversation for his third MVP. Although it sounds like that’s a discussion he’d rather not get involved in. “No other choice but to hear it,” Jackson said. “They (are) tagging me in it. You don’t (have) to tag me. You can talk about it all you want, but you want to tag me to get like clickbait because you know sometimes I (will) say something back like, ‘That was stupid.’ It is what it is. I don’t care, though.
