NoneDETROIT — Fifty years later, a man who grew up in suburban Detroit tried to return a very overdue baseball book to his boyhood library. The answer: You can keep it — and no fine. Chuck Hildebrandt, 63, of Chicago said he visited the public library in Warren while in town for Thanksgiving, carrying a book titled "Baseball's Zaniest Stars." He borrowed it in 1974 as a 13-year-old "baseball nut" but never returned it. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago holds the book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars," which was due Dec. 4, 1974, at the Warren, Mich., library, on Dec. 10. "When you're moving with a bunch of books, you're not examining every book. You throw them in a box and go," said Hildebrandt, who lived in many cities. "But five or six years ago, I was going through the bookshelf and there was a Dewey decimal library number on the book. 'What is this?'" Inside the book was a slip of paper indicating it was due back at the Warren library on Dec. 4, 1974. Hildebrandt told The Associated Press he decided to keep the book until 2024 — the 50th anniversary — and then try to return it. He figured the library might want to publicize the long overdue exchange. Chuck Hildebrandt of Chicago shows the library slip in the overdue book "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" on Dec. 10. He said he recently met library director Oksana Urban, who listened to his pitch. Hildebrandt said he hasn't heard anything since then, though Urban told the Detroit Free Press that all is forgiven. "Some people never come back to face the music," she said of patrons with overdue books. "But there was really no music to face because he and the book were erased from our system." So "Baseball's Zaniest Stars" is back on Hildebrandt's shelf. In return, he's now trying to raise $4,564 for Reading is Fundamental , a nonprofit literacy group. The amount roughly represents a 50-year overdue library fine. Hildebrandt seeded the effort with $457. The Major League Baseball draft is unique among professional sports drafts. The 30 organizations pick teenagers and college students who will not join their big league clubs for years—if ever. These athletes will spend that time honing their craft in the minor leagues, where long bus rides and minuscule paychecks are the norm. A few will move quickly up the ranks, seizing playing time opportunities to advance their careers and making their names known to scouts, fans, and other observers around the country. Some of the best will become MLB stars, but there's minimal correlation to draft position. Four of the players on this list were picked after hundreds of other diamond darlings, and only two were #1 overall selections. There's also more than a handful who didn't do much for the teams that drafted them, including superstars such as Nolan Ryan, Ozzie Smith, and Randy Johnson. Each of these players was traded before they evolved into Hall of Famers. Still, calling the draft a "crapshoot" might be going too far. College players are " slightly more likely " than high schoolers to reach the revered stadiums of the majors, and third-rounders have a better chance than fifth-rounders, for example, though the margins are slim, as Vice reported. Teams not only make picks based on years-in-advance projections but also whether they can sign players, a step that must be completed before those youngsters begin playing professionally. To see how clubs have fared since the inaugural draft in 1965, ATS.io compiled a list of the best draft pick by each franchise using data from Baseball Reference . The players were ranked using career wins above replacement , so not one recent choice was named. The amazing Mike Trout, a 32-year-old selected in 2009, is the youngest player. Unsigned picks were not considered, and players who were traded as picks were credited to their acquiring teams. But luckily, Beeb producers catering to women of a certain age did not have to travel to Italy to find a replacement — they just had a short drive down the A13 to Essex . Pete Wicks , the heavily-tattooed former bad boy of reality show The Only Way Is Essex , has been billed “the new Giovanni” by Strictly bosses — and it is not because of his dance moves. Indeed, Gio 2.0 Pete, who at 36 is just two years older than his counterpart, has become a huge hit with middle-aged female viewers. He is the new “bit of rough” they can gawp at on a Saturday night — and he has certainly been up for the task. From gyrating in tight pink PVC trousers to thrusting his schlong in a George Of The Jungle leopard-print outfit and choosing risqué songs, like Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy, Pete has been hamming it up. Read more on Pete Wicks A show insider said: “Strictly have turned Pete into the new Giovanni , there’s no doubt about that. It’s been quite deliberate. “Women are swooning over him and it’s keeping him in the competition, week after week. “It wouldn’t be wrong to say many viewers had no idea who Pete was before this series. They certainly do now. “With their matching brooding looks, tanned, rugged features , chiselled physiques and muscles on display, Pete has been a like-for-like swap for Gio. Most read in News TV “He has even amassed an entirely new fanbase. Plus there are no dark tales of bad behaviour or bullying .” Strictly bosses, who consist of mostly women, have been clever in moulding Pete into Giovanni and they share many parallels — even when it comes to their romances. Pete currently has an on-off relationship with Irish Love Island beauty Maura Higgins , a contestant on the new series of I’m A Celebrity , who also happens to be Gio’s ex after the pair dated in 2021. He also had a relationship with former Towie co-star Jess Wright, who Giovanni dated in 2018. Plus, Pete is growing increasingly close to his current dance partner Jowita Przystal , 30, who was linked to Gio last year. Of course, when Giovanni stepped down earlier this year — amid the bullying investigation into his treatment of former dance partner and actress Amanda Abbington , 50 — the biggest outcries came from his army of middle-aged female fans. Amanda became the target of trolls and even received death threats. As with Giovanni in previous series, Pete’s outfits have certainly been the most eye-catching out of all the male stars’. Namely, the barely-there leopard-print outfit for his samba routine in Movie Week, which made a lasting impression on judge Craig Revel Horwood , and last weekend’s Cha Cha costume, featuring the tightest (hot pink) PVC trousers the dance series has ever seen. He even appealed to acid-tongued Craig with a fake tattoo of the judge’s face on his body and proudly flashing his abs to the cameras. Those who know Pete well will appreciate he has stepped out of his comfort zone to embrace his risqué fashion choices, which has pleased show bosses. The insider added: “Pete made it clear he’s up for anything. He would never have dreamed of wearing outfits such as these previously “He knows he’s not the best dancer, but is well aware voters appreciate a trier. “Bosses have deliberately assigned Pete as this year’s hunk in Giovanni’s absence and want to dress him as sexy as possible. “He would never have dreamed of wearing outfits such as these previously, but Pete’s just got on with it — no questions asked. “Albeit he does joke he’s been made to look outrageous at times, but that’s just part of his ‘moody’ character. “He knows what he’s doing.” Pete’s signing to Strictly came as a surprise to those in the industry. He has only ever been associated with reality shows, which is usually a Strictly no-no, and has no real previous connection to the BBC . But his likeness to the controversial Italian and willingness to step out of his comfort zone secured his place on the show. Newfound love And his progression to the latter stages of the competition should not come as a surprise to those who follow Pete outside of Strictly. His association with I’m A Celebrity 2023 winner Sam Thompson , who he met on E4 show Celebs Go Dating , has been a career booster of epic proportions. The best friends’ Staying Relevant podcast is so popular that they sold out a UK tour, and their TikTok videos bag millions of viewers. And it is their vocal young fanbase, who voted in their droves to secure Sam’s jungle win, coupled with Pete’s newfound love from middle-aged Strictly fans, which has kept him away from the dreaded dance-off. Pete’s chemistry with his dance partner Jowita is also a contributing factor to their success. The pair have sparked romance rumours, with one source saying: “Pete loves Jowita, he has the utmost respect for her.” Whether it is enough to secure him a spot in the final remains to be seen, but he has certainly made his mark on the hearts of millions. BLIND comedian Chris McCausland has revealed he calls pro partner Dianne Buswell “Nicole Kidman”. READ MORE SUN STORIES The 47-year-old said that he and Australian dancer Dianne, 35, are always swamped by fans when they are seen in public, leading him to compare the experience to socialising with another famous Aussie red-head – Hollywood actress Nicole, 57. Speaking on the Graham Norton Show about popping out with Dianne for lunch, he said: “It has got to the point that, for two months, I have been saying, ‘Come on Nicole, let’s go get some spaghetti bolognese’.” MONTELL Douglas has joked that pro partner Johannes Radebe’s bum is too big for PVC trousers like the ones worn by Pete Wicks. The 38-year-old, aka Fire on BBC’s Gladiators, said she would love to see him in skin-tight bottoms like the pink ones fans believe helped save Pete on last week’s show. It came after Montell and Johannes, 37, inset, ended up in the dance-off while Pete and Jowita Przystal sailed through as fans swooned over his revealing strides. Asked if she and Johannes need a pair of pink pants to win extra votes, Montell said: “They’re not going to fit Johannes’s behind. But we all want to see it though, right? “We would pay to see that! I would, I would just stand there and watch.” Meanwhile, the former Team GB athlete said she has dropped two dress sizes training for up to ten hours a day. She added: “I’m shredded and I’m 38 years old. I haven’t looked like this since I was 20, before my first Olympic Games. “I’ve dropped two dress sizes. I’ve lost a stone – it’s wild. It’s changed my whole physique. “Even the Gladiators have mentioned it and said, ‘Oh, my gosh, you look insane’. “Legend was like, ‘Mate, you look shredded’. It’s a different body type. But it’s been nice because I still feel really strong. “Usually, if you would lose that muscle tone and mass as a Gladiator, you would feel it. But I still feel like I could take someone on right now. “I will be going back to the gym after Strictly.”
Black Friday, Cyber Monday Shopping Set To Break Sales RecordsThe Latest: UnitedHealthcare shooting suspect contests his extradition back to New YorkIvana Bacik had separate meetings with Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris on Tuesday afternoon. Fianna Fail, which won 48 seats in last month’s general election, and Fine Gael, which secured 38 seats, headed up the last coalition in Dublin and are expected to continue that partnership into the next mandate. However, with a combined 86 seats, they are just short of the 88 required for a majority in the Dail parliament. If they wish to return to government together, they would need one smaller party as a junior partner, or a handful of independents. Both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have ruled out doing business with Sinn Fein, which won 39 seats. The centre-left Social Democrats and Irish Labour Party, both of which won 11 seats in the election, are seen as the only two realistic options if Fianna Fail and Fine Gael seek to convince a smaller party to join the coalition. In a statement, the Labour Party said Ms Bacik outlined key policy priorities in her meetings with Taoiseach Mr Harris and Tanaiste Mr Martin. “There was discussion in both meetings on policies and manifesto commitments on housing, health, climate, workers’ rights and disability services among other issues,” said the statement. “The parliamentary party will meet at 1pm on Friday where the party leader will provide an assessment of engagement to date and consider the outcome of these meetings.” A spokesman for Mr Harris said there had been a “constructive engagement” with Ms Bacik. “The Taoiseach is grateful for the time and engagement on a range of substantial policy issues,” he said. The spokesman said Mr Harris had also met independent TDs who are aligned together in what is called the regional group. “These meetings have been productive,” he added. Mr Harris and party colleagues are due to meet the Social Democrats on Wednesday. Fianna Fail deputy leader Jack Chambers and Fine Gael deputy leader Helen McEntee met on Tuesday evening for discussions on government formation, with the parties’ full negotiating teams set to meet on Wednesday. Fine Gael said the meeting between Ms McEntee and Mr Chambers was “positive” and focused on the “structure and format” of the substantive negotiations going forward. When the two parties entered coalition for the first time after the last general election in 2020, there was only a three-seat difference in their relative strength. That resulted in an equal partnership at the head of the coalition, with the Green Party as the junior partner. The two main parties swapped the role of taoiseach halfway through the term. With Fianna Fail’s lead over Fine Gael having grown to 10 seats following this election, focus has turned to the future of the rotating taoiseach arrangement and whether it will operate again in the next mandate and, if so, on what basis. There are similar questions around the distribution of ministries and other roles. While Mr Martin has so far refused to be drawn on the specifics, he has suggested that he expects Fianna Fail’s greater strength of numbers to be reflected in the new administration. However, Mr Harris has insisted that Fine Gael’s mandate cannot be taken for granted when it comes to government formation. Richard Boyd Barrett from People Before Profit-Solidarity, which won three seats, urged Labour not to “prop up” up a Fianna Fail/Fine Gael administration. “We think that’s a huge mistake,” he told reporters in Dublin. “They shouldn’t do it. They should learn the lessons of the past and actually work with other parties of the left to form a decent left opposition to Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and campaign on the issues that matter.” His party colleague Paul Murphy pointed to the experience of the Green Party, which lost all but one of its 12 seats in the election. “In reality, what is going to happen is a changing of the mudguard for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael,” he said. “And for those who are now auditioning to be a new mudguard for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, there is a very, very sharp and stark lesson in what happened to the Green Party – obviously almost entirely wiped out. “We think it is a very major mistake for anyone who has the perception of being left, with the votes of people who are looking left, to seek to go into coalition with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael.”
The oceans, encompassing over 70% of the Earth's surface, are vital lifelines for biodiversity and economic prosperity. They are reservoirs of opportunities for sustainable development, encapsulated within Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: 'Life Below Water'. This goal emphasises conserving marine resources while leveraging their potential for economic growth. Central to this ambition is the concept of the Blue Economy, introduced by Gunter Pauli in his 2010 book The Blue Economy: 10 Years, 100 Innovations, 100 Million Jobs. Pauli envisioned oceans as "development spaces", where conservation aligns with the sustainable use of resources. The World Bank defines the Blue Economy as "the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems". Similarly, the European Commission describes it as encompassing "all economic activities related to oceans, seas, and coasts, including fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, and renewable energy". This vision encompasses fisheries, aquaculture, maritime shipping, renewable ocean energy, coastal tourism and marine biotechnology. According to a World Bank report, globally, the Blue Economy generates around $2.3 trillion annually, contributing to food security, poverty eradication and climate change mitigation. According to FAO, marine ecosystems are integral to global well-being. Oceans provide sustenance to over three billion people, with fish accounting for 16% of the global animal protein supply. Livelihoods for 660820 million people rely on fisheries and aquaculture, with women playing a critical role, particularly in fish processing, where they hold up to 90% of jobs. Furthermore, the World Bank report says that oceans absorb 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, with "blue carbon" sinks such as mangroves and seagrasses proving five times more effective than tropical forests at sequestering carbon. For Pakistan, the Blue Economy is an untapped frontier. With a 1,046 km coastline and a vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by the Arabian Sea, Pakistan's maritime potential remains largely underutilised. The maritime sector contributes only 2.4% of GDP, as per the Pakistan Economic Survey 20232024, with fisheries exports at just $450 million annually. In contrast, regional peers earn billions from marine resources. Estimates suggest Pakistan could generate over $100 billion annually from its Blue Economy with the right strategies (World Bank Group report). However, Pakistan's marine economy faces several challenges. Overfishing, habitat degradation, pollution and unregulated coastal development hinder sustainability. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing exacerbates the problem, with global losses estimated at $1022 billion annually as per the FAO Report. Climate change, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion and ocean acidification, further threatens livelihoods and ecosystems. Fragmented governance structures and inadequate infrastructure add to these issues. Despite these hurdles, opportunities abound for Pakistan to leverage its marine potential. Examples from Morocco, Indonesia and Oman highlight the impact of governance reforms and targeted investments. Morocco, backed by the World Bank, developed its aquaculture sector, creating rural jobs, especially for women. Indonesia employs mobile technologies to monitor fisheries, improving biodiversity conservation. Oman's fisheries management is a benchmark for balancing ecology and economic growth. To realise its Blue Economy potential, Pakistan must implement a comprehensive approach. Reforms like Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and marine spatial planning can align conservation with economic activities. Clear policies and tenure rights can empower communities to adopt sustainable practices. Digital tools for maritime mapping and data-driven monitoring can improve decision-making and resource management. Public-private partnerships in fisheries, renewable energy and marine biotechnology can foster innovation and economic diversification while attracting needed capital. Pakistan's scenic beaches, such as Gwadar and Kund Malir, have immense potential for eco-tourism. Investments in infrastructure, conservation and community engagement can attract global visitors and preserve natural habitats. Small-scale fishers and women in supply chains must be prioritised through policies and capacity-building programmes to ensure equitable access to resources and inclusive growth. Regional cooperation to address shared issues like illegal fishing and marine pollution can also drive collective progress. Empowering coastal communities is central to the Blue Economy. Small-scale fishers, often the most impacted by resource degradation, must have a role in governance and decision-making. This not only ensures equity but also enhances compliance with sustainable practices. Globally, fisheries rebuilding efforts are more successful when local stakeholders are involved. Pakistan's reliance on maritime transportation for 95% of its imports and exports underscores the strategic importance of coastal infrastructure (Pakistan Economic Survey 202324). Modernising ports and improving logistics can make Pakistan a regional maritime hub, boosting trade efficiency. Renewable ocean energy projects, like tidal and wave energy, can help address Pakistan's energy crisis while cutting carbon emissions. Protecting mangroves and coastal ecosystems is crucial for carbon sequestration and climate resilience. Declining mangrove cover threatens biodiversity and causes economic losses exceeding $4 billion annually, as seen in Belize. Restoring these habitats can deliver ecological and economic benefits. The oceans are Pakistan's gateway to sustainable development. Localising SDG 14 and embracing the Blue Economy, Pakistan can transform its marine resources into a foundation for economic growth and environmental stewardship. Visionary leadership, innovative governance and a commitment to sustainability are essential to secure Pakistan's maritime future, set a global example and ensure its oceans remain a source of life and livelihood for generations to come. It has all the important features that make for a great reading experience including a large display with high resolution, smooth performance, warm lighting, and an IPX8 water-resistance rating. The latest version has the highest contrast ratio of any Kindle (for sharper text and images) and up to three months of battery life. It's the thinnest it's ever been too. The Signature Edition is also on sale for $155 ($45 off) , which comes with auto-adjust brightness, double the storage (32 gigs), and wireless charging support. Photograph: Brenda Stolyar The basic Kindle is an excellent choice for a compact and affordable e-reader. The latest 2024 model doesn't offer many new features compared to the 2022 version, but it has a higher contrast ratio, a 25 percent brighter front light, and a faster page-turn rate. As the smallest Kindle, it's super comfortable to hold one-handed and travel with if you're the type who reads on the go often. For a fun pop of color, I suggest snagging the Matcha color. For under $100, you can't go wrong with this one. Photograph: Adrienne So If you're raising a bookworm, the kid-friendly Kindle makes for a wonderful gift this holiday season. Although it's more expensive, we prefer the Paperwhite Kids because it has a larger display (which is better for reading graphic novels) and it's waterproof so you don't have to worry about those accidental spills. The basic Kindle Kids is also on sale for $95 ($35 off) which is smaller, more compact, and comes with fun covers to choose from. Both models also include six months of Amazon Kids+ , a subscription service for age-appropriate books, and a two-year warranty. Fire Tablet Deals Photograph: Amazon The Fire Max 11 ( 5/10, WIRED Review ) is Amazon's most powerful tablet . But its high price, especially paired with the Productivity Bundle, put us off. Now that its price is well below $200, it's a much better value. Like all Fire tablets, it's ideal if you're all in on Amazon's content and services. It packs good performance, a bright and sharp screen, solid speakers, and an all-metal build, plus the 1080p cameras are nicer than what you'll find on the rest of Amazon's tablets. Photograph: Best Buy This Fire tablet launched late last year but it's still the best option in the lineup, especially at this sale price. It comes with a speedy octa-core processor, a large screen Full HD (1080p) screen, and 3 gigabytes of RAM for smoother performance when browsing the web with several tabs open. It supports Show Mode, which turns the tablet into an Echo Show smart display if you set it on a stand. You'll have the choice between 32 GB or 64 GB configurations, with a microSD card slot that can add up to 1 TB of storage on both models. If you want to use the tablet to get work done, you can also buy the Keyboard Case bundle for $100 ($90 off). Photograph: Amazon The 2024 Fire HD 8 tablet only comes with a few improvements. Amazon increased the RAM from 3 GB (up from 2 GB), which was likely added for smoother performance when using the company's new AI features . The rear camera has been upgraded to 5 megapixels (up from 2 MP). Aside from that, it has the same design, size, and 13-hour battery life (we hit about 11 hours in our testing) as its predecessor. You'll also get 32 GB or 64GB storage options with the ability to expand it up to 1 TB with a microSD card. It's a better option if you want all the features that come with the HD 10 but in a smaller size. The display isn't as nice, but the tablet is more travel-friendly. Photograph: Amazon This is the best kids' tablet for younger children. It sports all the same features as Amazon's standard Fire tablets, but you'll also get a rugged case and a two-year worry-free guarantee. Amazon will replace it for free if your kids accidentally break it. It also comes with a free year of Amazon Kids+ , which gives you access to kid-friendly movies, books, apps, and games. You can manage the parental controls on the device as well. Fire TV Stick Deals Photograph: Best Buy If you primarily watch Amazon Prime shows and movies, the second-generation Fire Stick is our top recommendation . You can still access major streaming apps like Netflix and Max, but a Fire TV Stick is tailored to Amazon Prime content. As with the last version, Alexa is built into the remote, there's an “Ambient Experience” feature that displays and cycles through nature or art scenes when you're not using it, and you'll have access to picture-in-picture mode for controlling smart home devices or pulling up security camera feeds. Amazon doubled the storage to 16 gigabytes in this model and added support for Wi-Fi 6E , future-proofing it a bit.

The bye week was like a breath of fresh air for the Ravens, who are entering a three-game stretch in 11 days.MITCHELL — A new season is on the horizon for a Mitchell High School girls basketball team that’ll bring a new look to the floor. It’s also one where the Kernels look to showcase the players’ athleticism. ADVERTISEMENT The idea comes from the height of the roster, of which Mitchell will have only two players to start the year who are 5-foot-8 or taller. Playing small ball is a familiar concept to the team, leading the Kernels to focus on other areas of the game with eagerness. Based on how practice has gone, third-year head coach Dave Brooks can tell the players are putting in hard work at the start, bringing optimism to this group. “They were ready to get to basketball,” Brooks said. “The kids are ready to go, like their attitude and they’re working hard so far. ... We’re pleased with the shape they came into the season with.” The Kernels also know they come into the year off last season’s run to the No. 2 overall seed in the Class AA playoffs. Mitchell went 20-4, winning the Eastern South Dakota Conference championship and finishing in sixth place in the state tournament for the second consecutive season. It was Mitchell's first 20-win season since 2013-14, and MHS has been 30-16 under Brooks the last two seasons. From last year’s campaign, three of Mitchell’s five starters and four of its seven players mainly used in rotation are back. In total, the Kernels return eight letterwinners to the girls basketball program, mostly freshmen and sophomores who’ll see time at both varsity and junior varsity, with their development over the season ultimately having an influence in the team’s final standings. “As the younger girls start to grow, we’ll be able to incorporate them into running our plays,” senior Makenzie Peterson said. “As soon as they get a hold of it, we’ll be able to substitute them in to get more legs running with what we’re going to be doing.” “We’re going to have to work together and not one person’s going to be able to do something,” added senior Lauren Van Overschelde. “We’re all going to have to chip in, but I think everyone knows that and is good with that.” ADVERTISEMENT Van Overschelde returns to the starting lineup with fellow senior Carsyn Weich and junior Addie Siemsen, the top returning scorer after averaging 12.3 points per game in a breakout sophomore season who recently committed to Division II Wayne State College. Peterson also returns as a steady presence who appeared off the bench last season, but after that, sophomore Matteah Graves is the only other player back having made more than five appearances in a game last season. Knowing there’s shoes to fill following both Sawyer Stoebner and Allison Meyerink’s graduations, it will be a learning process to everyone on the bench. “It’ll be a learning process not only for them, but for us as a coaching staff,” Brooks said, “Figuring out how we best get these kids in the game and what groups work, and it might be different every game, depending on who we play.” Mitchell hopes to get reinforcements by the new year, as sophomore Kenzie Hetland, listed at 6-foot-2, is working back from a strained anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury she sustained towards the end of volleyball season. For now, the focus in practice has been locking in the team’s modified zone defense and creating takeaways in transition at a faster tempo than before in an effort to create scoring, going back to the athleticism the players hope to display each game. “We’re going to have to move fast and rely on how athletic we are,” Van Overschelde said. “We’re not going to be able to sit down on the offensive end and set up plays. Every single one of us trusts one another and we’ve worked hard every single day.” Mitchell begins the year against defending Class A state champion Vermillion at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at the Corn Palace.Artificial Intelligence: The Investment Opportunity You Can’t Ignore In the past two years, the surge of artificial intelligence, marked by innovations like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has dramatically boosted stock valuations. While many investors have focused on giants like Nvidia and Palantir Technologies, the real stars of tomorrow might not be who you expect. TSMC: The Unsung Hero in AI’s Supply Chain Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) stands at the forefront of the AI revolution, although it hasn’t captured as much limelight as Nvidia. TSMC is crucial to the ecosystem, serving as the production backbone for many tech leaders like Apple, Amazon, and Alphabet. As demand for AI components skyrockets, TSMC’s financials reflect this momentum. The company’s recent quarterly revenue rose by 39% compared to last year, hitting $23.5 billion, with robust operating margins at 47.6%. The firm’s control of about 90% of advanced chip manufacturing positions it perfectly to seize future opportunities in AI. Upstart: Reinventing Credit with AI On a different front, Upstart is redefining consumer lending with its AI-powered approach. Though its stock has dipped since its pandemic peak, it’s bouncing back, propelled by its innovative AI model that surpasses traditional credit scoring. Recent updates in their technology led to significant gains, allowing more consumers to secure loans. Despite current profitability challenges, the company’s growth potential remains strong, especially as interest rates stabilize, potentially elevating its market position. In conclusion, while the tech giants continue to lead headlines, companies like TSMC and Upstart represent intriguing opportunities for savvy investors in the evolving AI landscape. The Next Big Players in AI Investment: What You Need to Know Artificial intelligence has rapidly evolved, creating investment opportunities that extend beyond the well-known tech giants. While Nvidia and Palantir Technologies often dominate the discussion, other companies like TSMC and Upstart are emerging as pivotal players in the AI ecosystem due to their unique contributions and roles. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is a critical player behind the scenes of the AI revolution. As a leader in advanced chip manufacturing, TSMC commands about 90% of this segment, cementing its role as an essential supplier for tech behemoths like Apple, Amazon, and Alphabet. The company reported a substantial 39% increase in quarterly revenue, reaching $23.5 billion, driven by the soaring demand for AI components. With robust operating margins of 47.6%, TSMC is positioned to significantly benefit from the ongoing growth and expansion of AI technologies. TSMC continues to innovate and expand its production capabilities, which is crucial as AI applications become more sophisticated and widespread. The market reliance on TSMC for chip manufacturing highlights the importance of considering supply chain investments in the AI industry. Upstart, although lesser-known, is pioneering a transformative approach to consumer lending. By leveraging AI to enhance credit evaluation processes, Upstart is challenging the traditional credit scoring models. Despite experiencing a dip from its pandemic-era stock highs, the company’s shares are rebounding due to technological advancements that have enabled more consumers to access credit. As Upstart continues to improve its AI models, the potential for market expansion grows, especially if economic conditions, such as interest rates, stabilize. This technological edge signifies that Upstart could capture a larger slice of the lending market, making it a worthwhile consideration for investors interested in AI-driven financial services. Upstart demonstrates the potential of AI to bring significant improvements and disruptions to established industries like finance, offering insights into where future growth and opportunities may lie. The landscape of AI investment is broadening, with multiple sectors experiencing transformative changes powered by AI technologies. Companies like TSMC and Upstart exemplify new avenues for investors, focusing on the integral roles these companies play within their respective industries, indicating a shift away from traditional tech giants as the only viable investment opportunities. For investors, understanding these nuanced roles is crucial for making informed decisions. As AI continues to advance, diversifying investment portfolios to include lesser-known yet impactful firms could yield significant returns, aligning with trends towards increased innovation and technological integration across various sectors.

Currently, the number of judges confirmed under Biden totals 221. Republicans forced numerous procedural votes this week and late-night sessions as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., attempted to move ahead in getting more of Biden’s nominees confirmed before Congress adjourns and Republicans take control of the chamber in January. A Senate Democratic leadership aide said Thursday a time agreement had been reached to allow for consideration of seven district court judges the week following Thanksgiving. Plus, another six district judges would be placed on the Senate executive calendar, making it possible for them to be considered on the Senate floor in December. Excluded from that list were four circuit judge nominations awaiting a floor vote: Adeel Abdullah Mangi of New Jersey, nominated for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals; Karla M. Campbell of Tennessee, nominated for the Sixth Circuit; Julia M. Lipez of Maine, First Circuit; and Ryan Young Park of North Carolina, Fourth Circuit. Mangi would have been the first Muslim American to serve as a federal appellate court judge if he had been confirmed. Mangi received law degrees from Oxford and Harvard. He works in a prestigious law firm and has secured significant legal victories. But his limited volunteer work with two outside groups has imperiled his nomination. He faced opposition from some Democrats as well. The confirmation battles over circuit court judges are generally much harder fights given their role in hearing appeals from district courts and often having the last word on legal matters. Schumer’s office said the four circuit nominees lacked the support to be confirmed, and that they received more than triple the amount of other judges moving forward as part of the agreement. How stand-up comedy helped reelect Trump Liberal groups in recent weeks have been pressuring Senate Democrats to do what it takes to get all of Biden’s judicial nominees confirmed before Trump takes office again. And some expressed disappointment with the deal. “Reports that there is a deal that would leave behind critical circuit court nominees are unacceptable. All of these nominees must be confirmed expeditiously before the end of the 118th Congress,” said Lena Zwarensteyn, an advisor at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. “When senators return from the holiday break, Leader Schumer and senators must do whatever it takes — for as long as it takes — to confirm every single pending judicial nominee, including all circuit court nominees, to provide an important guardrail for our democracy. No matter what, this must get done,” Zwarensteyn said. Schumer has dedicated much of the Senate schedule to getting Biden’s judicial nominees confirmed. He called it a basic responsibility of the Senate. “We’ll take that responsibility very seriously between now and the end of the year,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.
