WINCHESTER — Representatives from three area districts made their pitches to Winchester residents Thursday evening in the hopes that the town will send its high school students there when its agreement with Keene High School ends in 21⁄2 years. The event, held by the Winchester school board and its high school search committee, is part of a series of community input sessions designed to evaluate the options available to the district. The committee will present data about each school to the Winchester board next month, and voters will ultimately get to weigh in on the issue at the annual district meeting in March. Winchester closed its high school in 2005 and has paid tuition for the town’s students to attend Keene High since then. However, the Keene district announced in March that it would not renew the tuition agreement after it expires at the end of June 2027. The high school selection committee has been researching alternatives since this summer. The options include Hinsdale High, Monadnock Regional in Swanzey or Pioneer Valley Regional in Northfield, Mass. Each school is less than 20 minutes from Winchester School, which teaches elementary and middle-school students, with Hinsdale coming in as the closest at roughly 15 minutes, or 7.6 miles. After researching school options, the committee sent letters of interest on exploring a tuition agreement to superintendents in five area districts. Winchester Superintendent David Ryan said Hinsdale, where he is also superintendent, responded with an interest in receiving Winchester students. Pioneer Valley and Monadnock also responded. In their presentations Thursday, the three districts highlighted their extracurriculars, AP class offerings and more. At Monadnock Regional, social studies teacher Jeremy Robinson said the sense of community extends beyond classroom walls. He said his daughter was in the school marching band, which has a number of public performances throughout the year. His colleague, computer science teacher Tyler Adams, noted that roughly 41 percent of students who attend Monadnock participate in athletics. Robinson said the support from the six towns in the Monadnock district — Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Richmond, Roxbury, Swanzey and Troy — is crucial for student success. “We love that the community comes out for these events,” he said. Hinsdale High Principal Anna Roth said its extended learning program, where students earn credit for work outside the classroom, is a prime example of how the community can collaborate with its students. “We have a lot of flexible pathways that can be individually tailored to any demographic,” she told attendees. “So regardless of your level of need or your level of ability, we can individualize a path for you that meets your needs ... Part of being a small school is that it’s important to us to make sure that we know our students and that they feel supported.” Monadnock Regional and Hinsdale also highlighted the access their students have to career and technical education. Both districts send students to the Cheshire Career Center at Keene High School and Hinsdale also sends students to the Windham Regional Career Center in Brattleboro. Ryan Sweetser, a senior at Hinsdale, shared his experience being involved with the trades as part of the school’s presentation. He said he’s on track to attend the Southeast Lineman Training Center in Trenton, Ga., after graduation to pursue a career as an electrical line worker. “At Hinsdale High ... we all push each other to be a little bit better,” said Sweetser, who attends the Brattleboro career center. “We push each other to get out there to experience new things, and I wouldn’t have known about this program if my teachers didn’t take the time that they did to talk to me about career paths.” Pioneer Valley’s educational model boasts hands-on learning. The school began offering technical and advanced courses for students this fall in the environmental and life science fields after receiving funding from the state’s Innovation Career Pathways program, said Principal Annie Scanlan-Emigh. The grant provides $75,000 for the first year to kick-start the program, followed by an additional $50,000 for the next four years, according to reporting from the Greenfield Recorder. “We want to look at how we grow that program,” Scanlan-Emigh told attendees Thursday evening. “That’s both in terms of classes, like the advanced ecology class ... and taking advantage of the physical campus space we have.” At the end of the night, two middle-school-aged Winchester students shared their thoughts about the presentations with The Sentinel. While they’ll be unable to cast a vote at the 2025 annual school district meeting, they’ll be affected by whatever decision voters make at the polls. “I liked hearing from the students who are currently at the school,” said Zoey Kinson, a 7th-grader. “I’ve wanted to try different levels of classes, like honors, and it was nice to learn about those.” Kinson and her friend Izabel Winchester, also in 7th grade, both liked Hinsdale’s presentation the most. “I really like a smaller school,” said Izabel, whose mother is school board member Amanda Winchester. Izabel added that she appreciated all three schools taking the time to come by, even if they might not end up being chosen. “It’s really great to hear from a school who wants to take [Winchester] kids,” she said. Walshe, 49, was back in Norfolk Superior Court Monday for a hearing before Judge Diane Freniere, who was recently assigned to oversee his case. The lawyers told Freniere they’re eyeing the week of Oct. 20 for jury impanelment. Prosecutor Gregory Connor said the attorneys are expecting a four-week trial, about three weeks of which will be dedicated to testimony. Walshe’s sensational case has grabbed headlines since his wife, Ana Walshe, was last seen alive on New Year’s Day in 2023. Prosecutors allege he made a series of disturbing Google searches about dead bodies and purchased a hacksaw , hatchet, and various cleaning products shortly after his wife’s disappearance. Ana Walshe’s body has still not been found. Brian Walshe has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, misleading police, and improper conveyance of a human body. Defense attorney Larry Tipton noted Monday that forensic testing in the high-profile case “is extremely complicated, and it’s still ongoing.” Connor explained prosecutors are still awaiting testing on one key piece of evidence, tissue allegedly found on a saw discovered in a dumpster near Walshe’s mother’s Swampscott apartment complex. He noted the tissue samples have been sent to Bode Technology, an external lab. Walshe’s lawyers have also raised questions about the investigation’s integrity, given the lead investigator — Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor — was suspended without pay following his testimony in the Karen Read murder trial last summer. During the trial, Proctor admitted to sending vulgar texts about Read to his family, friends, and coworkers while working on the case. Walshe’s lawyers have requested information from a federal probe of Read’s case . They’re also seeking data from Proctor’s work cell phone and cloud account, as well as certain phone records from investigators assigned to Walshe’s case. Tipton specifically noted an interest in any “text messages and emails and cell phone records that indicate a bias, a prejudice, and a lack of professional integrity when it comes to investigating Mr. Walshe.” Prosecutors have said they don’t plan to call Proctor to the stand when Walshe’s case goes to trial. The veteran quarterback has now thrown a career-best 33 touchdowns. Johnson’s unit also produced its customary series of explosive plays. And on Sunday, it was courtesy of running back Jahmyr Gibbs and wide receiver Jameson Williams. Gibbs more than shouldered the workload out of the backfield in the place of Montgomery. He eluded defenders all game long, en route to accumulating 109 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Plus, he added another 45 yards as a pass-catcher. In totality, the second-year back amassed 154 all-purpose yards, marking his ninth game this season with north of 100 yards from scrimmage. It’s a feat that was last accomplished by a Lions back in 1997, when Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders did so on the way to earning MVP honors. Meanwhile, Williams was the very definition of electric on Sunday. Most notably, he displayed his game-changing speed on his 82-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter, easily running past Chicago cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and safety Jonathan Owens on his way to the end zone. “It looked good in practice. That was better than practice,” Lions head man Dan Campbell said of Goff’s deep strike to Williams. “It was a hell of a throw, excellent protection, and man, just a great job on his landmark, hitting it with speed, trusting it, great catch. It was big time.” With the touchdown, the third-year wideout now has totaled four TD receptions of 50-plus yards this season. The fourth-year receiver caught six of his eight targets from Goff, including a screen pass late in the second quarter on which he impressively slipped past several Bears defenders into the end zone. He finished the Week 16 contest with six catches for 70 yards and the one score. With the output, St. Brown now holds the distinction of being the only player in Lions franchise history to amass 100 receptions and 10 receiving touchdowns in back-to-back seasons. Plus, on Sunday, he became just the second player in NFL history to record multiple seasons with 100-plus catches, 1,000-plus yards and 10-or-more touchdowns in one’s first four seasons. The other player to accomplish the feat: former longtime Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald. The Lions, equipped with difference-making pass-catchers like St. Brown and Williams and an explosive back like Gibbs, are able to attack opposing defenses in a multitude of ways. Goff can beat the opposition both short and deep with those weapons – along with tight end Sam LaPorta – at his disposal. And Gibbs, with his immense talent, has the ability to break off a big run at any point in a game. As if that weren’t already enough for Detroit’s opponents to handle, Johnson’s offense also has mastered the ability to throw off defenses through the element of surprise. Whether a fake punt or a goal-line pass drawn up for an eligible offensive lineman (e.g. Dan Skipper), you never quite know what Johnson has up his sleeve. And on Sunday, the play-caller went into his bag of tricks once again, and pulled out his most creative play design of the season thus far. It came on the opening possession of the second half. After starting off on their own 21-yard line, Goff & Co. had driven all the way to the Bears’ 21-yard line in a mere four plays. It set up arguably the fake of the season not only for the Lions but also for the entire NFL. On the play, Goff, with Detroit lined up in the singleback formation, appeared to stumble upon taking the snap while Gibbs fell to the Soldier Field grass. All the while, you could hear members of Detroit’s offense yelling, “Ball, ball, ball, ball” and “fumble, fumble.” It all proved to be intentional, however, and a fine display of acting from Johnson’s unit. Goff never lost possession of the football, and remained on his feet as he found a wide-open LaPorta for a 21-yard TD pass. It was a stroke of genius from Johnson, and executed to perfection by the Lions’ veteran signal-caller and the offense. “I think that part where Gibbs, where he dives, really sells the play,” Goff said in the postgame. “I’m only doing half of it. It worked like a charm, and it was nice to score there.” No ifs, ands, or buts about it, the Lions delivered a masterful offensive performance Sunday. And it couldn’t have come at a better time for Detroit’s fanbase, which needed a huge pick-me-up after the team’s loss to the Bills a week ago. Google | Via Reuters Google's recent announcement of the arrival of Willow , a quantum chip that has reduced the error tendencies of some of its predecessors, is a milestone in the effort to bring quantum computing into the real world, and in the years ahead, it could change the way we think about the risk in cryptocurrencies. Willow's speed is almost incomprehensible — according to Google , it's able to perform a computation in under five minutes that would take one of today's fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years to solve. Ten septillion is 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years. But the accuracy of quantum computing has, until now, also been a big issue, with quantum like a garden hose on full blast with no one holding it: the water is coming out fast, but its aim is not consistently accurate. Willow's combination of speed and accuracy could theoretically provide hackers with the tools to unlock the algorithms that bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built upon. Taqi Raza , assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, said existing cryptos will have to evolve to ward off qubits. "As the potential for quantum computers to break existing cryptography becomes more of a concern, new cryptocurrencies specifically designed to be quantum-safe could be developed. These new quantum cryptos would integrate PQC, cryptographic algorithms that are resistant to the computational power of quantum computers," Raza said. Jeremy Allaire, co-founder, chairman & CEO of digital currency company Circle, told CNBC in an interview last week that the risk is real, but his view of the future remains focused on the opportunities that will evolve. "The bottom line is quantum crypto means that you can both unlock things more easily, things that had bad old locks, but you can also create better locks," Allaire said. "So quantum crypto – this quantum is going to be actually a huge turbocharge to crypto computing, to crypto applications, and to crypto money." Raza thinks that ultimately the more sweeping changes wrought by quantum computing will occur beyond crypto. Breakthroughs will make devices and software faster, revolutionize AI, and improve data security with ultra-secure encryption methods. In everyday life, there will be advances in computing, healthcare, energy, and security, Raza said, and as a result, it is not the crypto industry we should be thinking about in isolation while these changes are still developing.
