There’s something different in the air surrounding the Hawks, and there are plenty of reasons for that, most notably Trae Young. Atlanta’s star point guard has taken on a completely new role, not just on the court but also off of it. Young is boasting a career-low usage rate, acting more as a traditional point guard, facilitating Atlanta’s offense. While Young has taken a backseat, particularly in scoring, it’s enabled everyone else to have career years so far. Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, and De’Andre Hunter are producing at the highest levels of their respective careers, which isn’t a coincidence given their usage rates are all at a career-high. Trae Young is averaging 21 points per game, the lowest since his rookie year, but also 12.2 assists per game, a mark that leads the league. He’s completely adjusted his game, tailoring it to what Quin Snyder needs, but he’s adopting another role as well — that of a leader. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Trae Young is taking steps to become the leader off the court as much as he is on the court. “ Late last summer after the Olympics, Hawks star point guard Trae Young flew Daniels and Risacher out to his offseason home in Oklahoma for a multiday training and bonding session, sources said,” Windhorst writes. “It was greatly appreciated by the young new teammates and formed the foundation for building a relationship with two cornerstones of the future in Atlanta. Over the past two years it was an open secret the Hawks had some chemistry issues within the team, and it affected the working relationship between Young and Dejounte Murray , who was traded in the offseason to New Orleans for a package that included Daniels. Hawks officials have been working with Young — who can be a bit of an introvert, teammates have noticed over his career — on his leadership and relationship-building skills. It’s still a work in progress, but Young is becoming better at it, team sources said, and it’s been one of the many positives for the Hawks this season.” Trae Young has never been the vocal leader that some other stars are around the league, but he’s clearly trying to step into that role now that he’s clearly the elder statesman in Atlanta. One of the 39 people pardoned by President Joe Biden’s administration is a Utah woman who has turned her life around after struggling with substance abuse. Stevoni Doyle of Santaquin is a wife, mother and grandmother who also fosters animals and volunteers. "I'm a therapist with Wasatch Behavioral Health, with the jail transition program,” said Doyle. "If you would have asked me 20 years ago if I would be here today, I never would have imagined that,” said Doyle. She has come a long way. "In 2000, I was introduced to meth, and I instantly become addicted,” explained Doyle. “It was the one thing that I felt like just completed me. Within a year, I lost custody of my 4 kids to DCFS and I had racked up a bunch of charges." Doyle served time at the Utah State Prison and then at a federal prison in Arizona. There, she decided to make some changes. "I started to take accountability for my actions and realized that I didn’t want to live this lifestyle," she said. General Motors Co GM shares are rising in Tuesday’s after-hours session after the company announced plans to refocus autonomous driving development on personal vehicles . What Happened: After the market close on Tuesday, GM put out a press release announcing a realignment of its autonomous driving strategy to prioritize development of advanced driver assistance systems. GM now plans to focus on building on the progress of Super Cruise, the company's assisted driving feature currently offered on more than 20 GM vehicle models. GM intends to combine its majority-owned Cruise LLC and GM technical teams into a single team working on advancing autonomous and assisted driving. Furthermore, GM said it will cease funding Cruise’s robotaxi development work, citing “considerable time and resources” needed to scale the business and an “increasingly competitive” robotaxi market . "GM is committed to delivering the best driving experiences to our customers in a disciplined and capital efficient manner. Cruise has been an early innovator in autonomy, and the deeper integration of our teams, paired with GM's strong brands, scale, and manufacturing strength, will help advance our vision for the future of transportation,” said Mary Barra , chair and CEO of GM. GM currently owns about 90% of Cruise, but the company announced agreements with other shareholders that are expected to increase the company’s ownership to 97%. GM plans to pursue the acquisition of the remaining shares. Contingent upon the purchase of the shares and board approval, GM plans to restructure and refocus Cruise’s operations. The company expects the restructuring to cut spending by more than $1 billion annually. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said linebacker De'Vondre Campbell won't be part of the 49ers moving forward after he refused to enter a game after losing his starting job. Shanahan said the team is still working through the options of how to deal with Campbell, who walked to the locker room in the middle of a 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night when he refused to enter the game. “His actions from the game are not something you can do to your team or teammates and still expect to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said Friday. “We're working through the semantics right now, but we'll handle the situation appropriately." Shanahan said Campbell won't be part of the team for the final three weeks. Teams have the ability to suspend players up to four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the team, according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Niners also could just waive Campbell outright, which would allow him potentially to be claimed or signed by another team. Campbell signed a $5 million, one-year contract with San Francisco in March. Campbell had started 12 of the first 13 games of the season and played 90% of defensive snaps for the 49ers but was benched Thursday night after Dre Greenlaw came back for his first game since tearing his left Achilles tendon in last season’s Super Bowl. When the 49ers wanted to put Campbell in the game in the third quarter because Greenlaw was sidelined with soreness in his Achilles tendon, Campbell refused, something Shanahan said has never happened to him in his time as a head coach or an assistant in the NFL. Shanahan said Friday that he has not gotten any explanation from Campbell on why he didn't play. Campbell then walked off the field with a towel draped over his head and went into the locker room before the end of the game with the Rams that almost ended the 49ers' playoff hopes. Shanahan said he didn't send Campbell to the locker room and didn't know why he left the field. “Once I found out he wasn't playing, I moved on to people we could count on,” he said. Campbell's decision left his teammates angered and bewildered. "He’s a professional,” cornerback Charvarius Ward said after the game. “He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could have told them before the game. So I feel like that was selfish. It definitely hurt the team. Dre went down and we needed a linebacker. ... For him to do that, that’s sucker (stuff) in my opinion. He’s probably going to get cut soon.” Ward is one of several 49ers who has played through injury or personal tragedy during a trying season for San Francisco. Ward’s 1-year-old daughter died on Oct. 28 but he has returned and played the last three games for San Francisco. Tight end George Kittle called Campbell's actions “stupid” and “immature.” “It’s one person making a selfish decision,” Kittle said. “I’ve never been around anybody that’s ever done that and I hope I’m never around anybody who does that again.” The 31-year-old Campbell signed in the offseason with San Francisco after being cut by Green Bay in March. He had been an All-Pro in 2021 for the Packers but his play fell off the last two seasons in Green Bay. That led to Campbell complaining on social media that he was misused by Green Bay. He expressed excitement about being with a new team but he never got back to his All-Pro level. And yet we have laws against donating unconsumed food to charities like orphanages, homes for the aged and such. It’s also true that whatever food is left uneaten in the restaurant, it is usual for diners to tell the waiter, “Please pack the leftovers in a doggie bag for me to take home.” Legends, like habits, grow over time. Many of us of a certain generation or generations were brought up supposing that people in certain countries in the Far East and South Asia were “starving” – an unfounded rumor that mothers and grandmothers unfairly passed along to teach their young why not to waste food. Nonetheless, it is assumed that we do waste too much food. If you ask your friendly waiter, he’ll probably confirm your worst fears: 30 percent of water and 20 percent of food are left unconsumed on the table in a typical middle-class restaurant. As a happy people who celebrate by eating and feasting, we are forever on the lookout for new restaurants. When Tikya discovered that a newly opened restaurant was in her neighborhood, she invited our so-called eating club to join her and “give it a try” – which we did. The restaurant is named Thai Siam, and true enough, it serves Thai food. Happily, it does not lack for Siamese local color. The waiters and waitresses wore aprons in violet and purple, with a printed pattern of elephants on parade. Separate protests were held outside Georgia's public broadcaster -- accused of being a government propaganda tool -- as well as the education ministry and the country's tourism administration offices. Thousands have also staged anti-government rallies in the second city of Batumi on the Black Sea coast. On Friday, a court in Tbilisi put a 19-year-old youth activist in pre-trial detention on charges of "organising, leading, and participating in group violence". Zviad Tsetskhladze told the judge "the rule of law has been crushed. "Our actions are a form of resistance, aimed at preserving the rule of law, defending democracy, and protecting the rights of every individual." The prime minister on Friday praised his security forces for "successfully neutralising the protesters' capacity for violence". "We have won an important battle against liberal fascism in our country," he told a news conference, using language reminiscent of how the Kremlin in Russia targets its political opponents. "But the fight is not over. Liberal fascism in Georgia must be defeated entirely," Kobakhidze said. With both sides ruling out a compromise, there appeared to be no clear route out of the crisis. The leader of the opposition Lelo party, Mamuka Khazaradze, said the government "has resorted to arresting young activists and political opponents out of fear of relentless public protests and growing civil disobedience by public servants." Masked officers have raided several opposition party offices and arrested opposition leaders earlier this week, while around 300 people have been detained at rallies. On Friday Nika Gvaramia, leader of the opposition Akhali party, was sentenced to 12 days in prison. Alexandre Elisashvili, leader of the Strong Georgia opposition group, was remanded in custody for two months of pretrial detention. More trouble is expected after December 14, when Georgian Dream lawmakers elect a loyalist to succeed pro-Western President Salome Zurabishvili. She has vowed not to step down until the parliamentary polls are re-run. Local media has also reported protests across the country, including in the cities of Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Rustavi and Telavi. Critics of Georgian Dream are enraged by what they call its betrayal of Tbilisi's bid for EU membership, enshrined in the constitution and supported by around 80 percent of the population. Several ambassadors, a deputy foreign minister, and other officials have resigned over the suspension of EU talks. Georgian Dream, in power for more than a decade, has advanced controversial legislation in recent years, targeting civil society and independent media and curbing LGBTQ rights. Brussels warned such policies were incompatible with EU membership, while domestic critics accuse the government of copying Russia's playbook. While researchers have made advances in measuring screen use, a detailed critique of the research in 2020 revealed major issues in how screen time is conceptualized, measured and studied. An Indian actor was on Friday arrested after his appearance at a movie screening allegedly prompted a stampede by fans that crushed a woman to death, police and local media said. Huge crowds had gathered at a theatre in the southern city of Hyderabad on December 4 to catch a glimpse of actor Allu Arjun as he arrived for the screening of his film Pushpa 2: The Rule. The 42-year-old actor was arrested on suspicion of three offences, including voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to media. The officer added that seven other people had already been arrested in the case. A video on social media platform X, shared by broadcaster TV9, showed the actor holding a coffee mug as he spoke to officers who arrived at his residence to take him into custody. Later in the day, Arjun was granted interim bail for four weeks, media reports said. The victim of the stampede was a woman in her 30s attending the screening with her son, who was also seriously injured. The woman’s family later filed a complaint against Arjun, his security team and the theatre management, media outlet India Today reported.
